Destiny requires specialty Red Bull can purchase to unlock quest

Chris Smith | Jun 24, 2015 8:05 PM CDT

It seems the 'Greentext' memes are becoming real as an "epic, new quest" explained as a "never-before-seen, multistage mission in The Taken King that will test the speed and strategic abilities of Destiny players in new ways" will require a Redbull can purchase and specialty code in order for gamers to participate. People certainly aren't happy about this new 'experience', as seen on Games Radar.

Destiny requires specialty Red Bull can purchase to unlock quest

Once entered, the code will unlock this quest for all alongside bonus experience points soaring at a rate of 50% for only 30 minutes. How do you unlock more experience bonus? Buy more Red Bull cans! The experience bonus will be made available on the 1st of July, with the quest launching on September the 15th.

Released alongside The Taken King expansion which will cost us all $40, the quest will be exclusive to Red Bull drinkers only until January 1st, 2016. It also seems this is a US-only promotion at this stage.

Bethesda stopped Doom 4 because it felt like CoD 'with a Doom skin'

Michael Hatamoto | Jun 24, 2015 4:06 PM CDT

Bethesda Softworks publicly unveiled Doom during E3, the studio's latest attempt at renewing the famed gaming franchise - and things are going so much better than when Bethesda tried to put together the failed Doom 4 project a few years ago.

"We weren't happy with the game that was being made," said Pete Hines, VP of PR and marketing at Bethesda, in a statement to Polygon. "We decided that it wasn't Doom enough and needed to be thrown out and started over. Some folks left and some faces changed at the studio. Out of that change - which was not easy for those guys to go through - some amazing things happened."

It seemed like nothing went right with the original Doom 4 project that was underway years ago, with demon and enemy AI all the way to "the visceralness of the combat," which was "more disconnected." Instead, gamers would have had to work through the game in the same fashion as Call of Duty and other war-style games - take cover and be extremely strategic in gameplay.

Sony will launch 1TB PS4 Ultimate Player Edition in July

Michael Hatamoto | Jun 24, 2015 3:09 AM CDT

Sony has announced the 1TB PS4 Ultimate Player Edition will launch in Europe and other markets starting on July 15. Gamers had the chance to upgrade their storage capacity with the PS4 if they wanted to, but this is a stock option from the Japanese electronics company.

Sony will launch 1TB PS4 Ultimate Player Edition in July

The debut of a 1TB PS4 is an answer to the Xbox One receiving 1TB storage - and designed to help gamers cope with the growing number of digital game downloads. Pricing information wasn't released by Sony.

In addition to the 1TB PS4 Ultimate Player Edition, Sony also has modified the 500GB model so it's lighter and more power efficient. The new 500GB models will be available in Japan before the end of June, and will be released worldwide in staggered launches.

Xbox One in Japan hits a new low, selling just 100 units in one week

Michael Hatamoto | Jun 23, 2015 5:40 PM CDT

Microsoft just can't catch a break while promoting the Xbox One in Japan, selling just 100 units from June 8 to June 14, according to 4Gamer. The PlayStation 4 sold 10,822 units - and the aging PlayStation 3 managed to rack up 2,633 sales during the same hellish week for Microsoft.

It's not a surprise that Japanese gamers prefer hardware from Sony and Nintendo - and Microsoft knew it'd be a major fight to sell the Xbox One in Japan - but this is a new all-time low for Microsoft. However, the original Xbox and Xbox 360 didn't struggle this much in Japan, where a tech and gaming savvy population loves embracing new technologies.

Late last year, Xbox boss Phil Spencer noted that Japan isn't an easy market for the company's consoles, but vowed to try to "conquer Japan." Well, keep trying Microsoft...

Want to use Cortana on the Xbox One? You'll need a Kinect

Michael Hatamoto | Jun 23, 2015 12:45 PM CDT

If you're looking forward to using the Cortana intelligent personal assistant on the Xbox One, it looks like you'll need a Kinect unit. Cortana integration is expected with a new Xbox One dashboard update sometime in 2015, which is scheduled for some time in the fall.

Want to use Cortana on the Xbox One? You'll need a Kinect

At the end of this teaser trailer, the following small print is displayed: "Kinect required for Cortana speech recognition."

Even though Cortana responds to voice commands, it's curious since Microsoft didn't spend much time promoting the Kinect during E3. In addition, the Xbox One and Kinect were unbundled in 2014, which allowed Microsoft to cut Xbox One prices.

EA: Brand and quality are important for mobile game development

Michael Hatamoto | Jun 23, 2015 9:35 AM CDT

Electronic Arts and other major game companies are fascinated by mobile game development, even though casual gaming has been successful. It looks like the overall quality of mobile games is increasing, with more development funds and focus on creating a popular new Apple iOS or Google Android offering.

Following Take-Two transitioning Grand Theft Auto for mobile devices via premium sales, studios aren't showing as much interest in live services. However, a free-to-play live-service gaming trend could eventually draw some attention:

"Some will. It'll vary. The Grand Theft Auto game has been relatively successful over the last two or three years," said Bill Mooney, VP and GM at EA Mobile, in a statement to GamesBeat. "It would be a question of whether it's the halo or the experience itself. I'm not capable of answering that. EA believes that some of those hardcore gamer brands - you'll see us explore - in a methodical - committed fashion, stuff like sports. Some of our other brands I expect we'll do. We're actively working on it. I myself am working on brands that gamers love."

Batman: Arkham Knight is a disastrous PC port, with a 30FPS cap

Anthony Garreffa | Jun 23, 2015 7:31 AM CDT

Well... after Rocksteady Studios' kick ass work on Batman: Arkham Asylum, many gamers including myself, were excited to see the studio take control on Batman: Arkham Knight. Well, it looks like they've borked the PC port of it up, with the word 'disappointing' being a true understatement. The NeoGAF forums are filled with posts on Batman: Arkham Knight, with both AMD and NVIDIA owners both noticing issues.

Batman: Arkham Knight seems to be plagued witih multiple issues, with some gamers reporting their hitting a 30FPS performance wall. A workaround has been discovered, but what the hell is Rocksteady doing releasing a game like this with a performance cap of 30FPS in the first place? Did they not test it on PCs?

Other problems with the PC version of Batman: Arkham Knight are massive performance issues, with stuttering and audio glitches being noticed by many gamers.

Activision discusses news that Call of Duty is now 'home' with Sony

Michael Hatamoto | Jun 22, 2015 1:25 PM CDT

Microsoft wasn't shocked when Activision announced Sony would become the new 'home' of Call of Duty, giving PlayStation 4 gamers the chance to receive all content first.

Not surprisingly, Activision wants to make sure its games have a good playing experience, regardless if a gamer is using a PC, Microsoft Xbox One or PS4 - however, now is the time to partner with Sony, as the company has "a lot of momentum" with the PS4.

"Maybe Sony's the one that made an interesting switch? The thing behind it, it was the right partnership at the right time, for the right reasons, for all parties involved," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision, in a statement to GamesBeat. "I'd rather not talk about the inside baseball stuff. Both platforms matter to us. We want to create great experiences on both platforms. We're going to do that. No matter where you play Call of Duty or Destiny or any of our games, we'll deliver the best possible experience on each platform as we always have. In the case of Call of Duty, everyone gets all the content as well."

Treyarch actually made AI in Black Ops 3 too good, had to limit it

Michael Hatamoto | Jun 22, 2015 12:30 PM CDT

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will feature extremely developed artificial intelligence, so gamers will get to enjoy a more unique playing experience.

Ideally, AI is able to pose a challenge to gamers, and be a bit more dynamic - but the studio had to be careful not to make the AI too difficult to overcome:

"The enemies make a reasonable, intelligent choice at all times," said Jason Blundell, Black Ops 3 campaign director at Treyarch, in the latest issue of Edge magazine. "One soldier may have an SMG, but his mentality could be 'I want to keep my distance,' 'I want to protect this point' or 'I need to flank.' The problem was reining that system in so the AI agents weren't too good."

Nintendo thinking of opportunities away from just gaming consoles

Michael Hatamoto | Jun 21, 2015 10:30 PM CDT

Nintendo is best known as a gaming company with a focus on video game consoles and handhelds, but company officials want to embrace new technologies. It looks like Nintendo wants to help create a gaming ecosystem that combines gaming hardware, video games and the gaming community - and everything is on the table.

"We're a development-driven company," said Charlie Scibetta, senior director of corporate communications at Nintendo, in a statement to Forbes. "With the people that make the games back at NCL and our localization staff here, they're always thinking, 'Is this fun to play or not?' They're not thinking about increasing market share, trying to branch into new areas of entertainment. It really comes back to, 'Is this a fun experience?' If everything goes through that filter, then we think we're going to stay on the right course."

Nintendo has spoken publicly about its desire to focus more on mobile gaming opportunities, with at least five mobile game titles expected by March 2017.

Konami assures gamers: No pay to win option in Metal Gear Solid V

Michael Hatamoto | Jun 21, 2015 8:30 PM CDT

Konami has released a 40-minute game play video of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, after screenshots and details about the game were published earlier this month. Although gamers are excited, there has been concern regarding how the game will support microtransactions.

Konami assures gamers: No pay to win option in Metal Gear Solid V

Microtransactions have been included to assist gamers "who might not be able to spend as much time with the game," according to Konami. Here are some additional details about microtransactions in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain:

"While it is true that a few microtransactions options do exist, the entire game has been carefully balanced to be fair and enjoyable with or without using these options," Konami said. "There's no pay to win option. Rest assured that every single item, weapon, and mission in the game is available to all players without paying a single cent."

Sony official is a bit skeptical of Xbox One's backward compatibility

Michael Hatamoto | Jun 21, 2015 6:30 PM CDT

Microsoft's announcement that the Xbox One would be backward compatible to support Xbox 360 games was quite a surprise. Of course, Sony has said PlayStation 4 gamers shouldn't expect backward compatibility - and displayed a bit of skepticism regarding Microsoft's claims.

"I didn't think it was possible. There must be lots of engineering effort," said Shuhei Yoshida, head of Sony Worldwide Studios, in a statement to Eurogamer. "They talked about 100 games, but what kind of games will be included? Is it smaller games or big games? We don't know."

Expect a proper backward compatibility launch for the Xbox One before the end of the year. Xbox gamers have the chance to vote on which titles they would like to play on the Xbox One, with Microsoft looking at each game individually.

Fallout 4 editions with Pip-Boy is selling out at retailers

Michael Hatamoto | Jun 21, 2015 3:33 PM CDT

The Fallout 4 Pip-Boy Edition that includes a real Pip-Boy has proven to be a complete hit among gamers. It looks like Bethesda is having a difficult time keeping the Pip-Boy Edition on store shelves, and it remains unknown which stores - and in what locations - will be restocked.

"The Pip-Boy is important part of Fallout, and we love it so much that we made a real one," said Todd Howard, game director at Bethesda Softworks, in a statement published by Forbes. "Yes, you can put your phone in it, and yes, we made an app for it so it works with the game, and yes it's a second screen experience. Usually I find second-screen experiences to be stupid gimmicks, but as far as stupid gimmicks goes, this is the best f---ing one I've ever seen."

Bethesda also said it will ask its sales team and stores to address those folks purchasing multiple copies and reselling them on Ebay. Some Fallout fans are frustrated already, but Bethesda is doing its best to sort out logistical issues in a timely manner.

Fable Legends director discusses decision to support DLCs

Michael Hatamoto | Jun 21, 2015 3:22 PM CDT

Lionhead Studios and Microsoft Studios are preparing for the launch of Fable Legends, built on the Unreal Engine 4, which will be a free-to-play game. Gamers won't be initially required to pay to play, but can purchase downloadable content (DLC) if they want additional content to play.

"We launch the game later this year with a certain amount of content but then we're going to continue to release new content every single month, new quests, new stories to play," said David Eckelberry, director of Fable Legends, in a statement to Newsbeat. "Some of that you can purchase, some you can unlock in the game and some you just get for free."

Even though so-called freemium games appear to have some popularity, gamers have shown frustration when they must pay to essentially complete the gaming experience. However, it's a thought that is not lost on Eckelberry and said game developers have to "be responsible" and it "would be wrong" to build half a game and then charge gamers.

Batman: Arkham Knight on the PS4 will have a 3.5GB day-one patch

Anthony Garreffa | Jun 20, 2015 10:40 PM CDT

Batman: Arkham Knight drops on June 23, with PlayStation 4 owners to get hit by a day-one patch that weighs in at 3.5GB. The patch will introduce in the "Rival Points" feature, as well as the original Batman skin, support for future DLC, and an Improved Performance and Stability Fixes.

We don't know if the Xbox One or PC versions of Batman: Arkham Knight will be slapped with 3.5GB day-one patches, but we should expect something very similar for these two platforms, too. With the game dropping on Tuesday, and with Polygon already giving it a perfect 10 and saying that Batman: Arkham Knight is "the best game of this console generation" the hype is real.

Microsoft responds to Sony becoming new 'home' of Call of Duty

Michael Hatamoto | Jun 20, 2015 4:20 AM CDT

During E3, it was revealed that Sony is the new "home" for the Call of Duty game franchise, which wasn't a major shock among any of the game companies involved. However, it caused a bit of a commotion among Xbox One and PlayStation 4 game console owners - as PS4 gamers will receive all map packs first.

"We were expecting the announcement, obviously we have a great relationship with Activision, we have more people playing Call of Duty today on our platform than any other," said Aaron Greenberg, Senior Director of the Studios Marketing Group, in a statement to Polygon. "And if you think about it, if you're a shooter fan and want to play Halo and Call of Duty, there's only one box to do it on."

Even with Sony now being the new 'home' for Call of Duty, that doesn't mean Microsoft won't try to cash in on Activision's premier game franchise:

Anthony Garreffa | Jun 20, 2015 3:48 AM CDT

E3 2015 - Warner Bros and Avalanche Studios have released a new trailer for their upcoming Mad Max game, with the new 'Eye of the Storm' trailer available below. Not only that, but a slew of new high resolution screenshots have also been released.

Mad Max 'Eye of the Storm' game trailer released

Mad Max will feature an interesting crafting system that can be used to craft new weapons and tools, he will eat rodents, maggots and other small animals in order to get his health increased, too. Max's garage can be used to fully modify the car's engine, chassis, wheels, body work, and the "shell" of the car itself.

Avalanche has also talked about the graphical side of Mad Max, where the studio said: "Since the Avalanche Engine has been used in several games, it has picked up a lot of graphical features along the way. The engine is optimized for open world games so you will find dynamic time of day and dynamic weather, with some big sand storms. Mad Max is set in The Wasteland where a lot of the ground is visible, so we added parallax occlusion mapping to give some depth to the terrain material".
