AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX specs: up to 96 cores, 192 threads at up to 5.15GHz, 350W TDP
AMD is not far away from the launch of its new Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000WX series processors, delivering some truly next-gen powerhouse HEDT performance across 6 x SKUs of new CPUs that will be launching in the coming weeks.
But now, we've got some leaked specs on the flagship Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX processor from our friends over at Wccftech. AMD's upcoming Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX processor rocks 96 cores and 192 threads based on the new Zen 4 CPU architecture, with a whopping 384MB of L3 cache. We've got base clock speeds of 2.50GHz, boost clock speeds of up to 5.15GHz, and a 350W TDP.
Under that, we've got the Threadripper PRO 7985WX, 7975WX, and 7965WX processors... which will come in 64 cores, 128 threads for the Threadripper PRO 7985WX processor, 32 cores and 64 threads inside of the Threadripper PRO 7975WX processor, and then 24 cores and 48 threads for the Threadripper PRO 7965WX processor.
Intel Arc A580 launches, a new budget GPU with an affordable $179 price point
Intel has launched its latest discrete graphics card, with the new Intel Arc A580 available globally, with pricing starting from USD 179. The first few Intel Arc A580 GPUs arrive courtesy of ASRock, GUNNIR, and SPARKLE - and you can check out our full review of the SPARKLE Intel Arc A580 ORC OC Edition.
Intel describes the card as the latest Arc entry to cater to gamers and creators, targeting fast 1080p gaming performance at 'High' settings - with even faster performance when playing popular esports titles. The big story here, at least for us, is the $179 price point - we haven't seen a brand-new GPU (especially one that can deliver decent performance) arrive at a low price like this in a long, long time.
Spec-wise, it's very close to the Intel Arc A750, too, so you're looking at performance within 10% of the mainstream Arc 7 offering. In our benchmarking, which pushed game settings to the 'Ultra' level, SPARKLE Intel Arc A580 ORC OC Edition delivered an average frame rate of 74 FPS, which is not too shabby for an entry-level card, making it an attractive option for PC gamers on a budget. This figure makes it 20% faster than the GeForce RTX 3050, which retails for a higher price.
COLORFUL's new GeForce RTX 4060, RTX 4060 Ti cards have hidden power connectors

PS5 Slim created to reduce costs, not shake up the console market
Microsoft has funded two digital-only mid-gen Xbox console refreshes, but Sony moves in the opposite direction to improve profitability and significantly reduce costs.
Xbox and PlayStation compete in two different timelines. Microsoft is trying to plan for an all-digital future where consumers are funneled into subscriptions, whereas Sony is capitalizing on the here and now. Since the PS5s launch in 2020, Sony has released multiple console revisions aimed at boosting profitability while simultaneously reducing costs.
Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S consoles aren't profitable--in fact, no Xbox console has been made and sold at a profit. The PlayStation 5, on the other hand, was profitable soon after launch. This profitability isn't constant, though, and the PS5 has ebbed in and out of certain levels of profitability due to higher manufacturing and shipment costs. Sony responded by raising PS5 prices worldwide except for North America and releasing multiple hardware revisions that reduce weight and make the system more efficient.

Don't expect OLED MacBook Pros for a few years yet, analyst warns
OLED displays are all the rage right now. It seems that we can't go more than a few minutes without another Apple rumor relating to a switch to the new display technology. We already expect the 2024 iPad Pro to switch to OLED, while the iPad mini and iPad Air are now also thought to be making the move over eventually, too. The latest is the MacBook Pro, but don't expect it to arrive any time soon.
That's according to a new report by the display supply chain expert Ross Young who was in conversation with Bloomberg Intelligence's Woo Jin Ho during a webinar. That webinar was first reported by MacRumors and saw Young say that it will take a few years before Apple's supply chain is ready to start producing OLED panels for laptops at the rate at which Apple would require.
According to Young, we shouldn't expect that Apple will launch OLED MacBook Pros until 2026 at the earliest and possibly not until 2027. That does match a similar timeline that Young had previously suggested, too.

iOS 17.1 will fix an iPhone 15 Pro Action button problem, but only partially
Have you ever taken your iPhone 15 Pro out of your pocket and found that your Action button has been triggered by accident? If the answer is a resounding and enthusiastic yes, you're in luck because Apple seems to be on the case.
While activating the Action button requires a long press, it seems that some people have found that it is still surprisingly easy to activate by accident. That's happening in pockets and bags around the world, but a new MacRumors report notes that the iOS 17.1 update appears to have made a change that will fix that. The change is already available in the third developer beta of the iOS 17.1 update that is now available for download. With that installed, the iPhone 15 Pro prevents accidental Action button presses by disabling it whenever it's in a pocket or a bag.
However, as the report notes, the change only seems to apply to some of the action options and not all of them. For example, the Camera, Flashlight, Voice Memo, Focus, and Magnifier functions are all disabled. But if you have the Action button configured to launch a shortcut, for example, long pressing it in a pocket will still trigger the action. The same applies to enabling and disabling the mute function, too.
You might not need an iPad Pro to get an OLED display, new report claims
Following ongoing rumors that the M3 iPad Pro will gain a new OLED display as soon as early next year, a new report suggests that you might not have to buy it to get one of those displays. If that report is correct, the iPad mini and iPad Air will also benefit from an OLED display upgrade.
The report doesn't go into great detail about what other upgrades we should expect from those new OLED-powered displays, so we don't know if we should expect 120Hz ProMotion to also make its way to those non-Pro iPads as well. If it does, it'll be the first time that the feature has rolled out to an iPad lineup that isn't an iPad Pro.
The report comes via a post on the Korean social media network Naver and from a user who has a relatively successful track record with getting these kinds of reports correct. The post was first spotted by MacRumors and suggests that the new OLED iPad Air and iPad mini will arrive in 2026.
Sony's first modular PlayStation console to replace all existing PS5s
Sony has officially announced the new PlayStation 5 "slim" duo, complete with a modular redesign that allows consumers to fluidly change their consoles at any time.
As previous reports had indicated earlier this year, Sony will indeed release a new PS5 Slim lineup for Holiday 2023. Sony isn't calling the new designs "slim," though. These new versions are meant to be successors that eventually replace the existing PlayStation 5 disc and digital consoles that are currently on the market.
The new PS5s will still be sold separately as the PlayStation 5 ($499) and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition ($449). As before, one model comes with a disc drive and the other doesn't. The major difference here is that either model can morph back and forth between each form factor. PS5 Digital Edition owners can buy a disc drive later down the line for $80 and install it at any time--the PS5 digital edition is no longer permanently digital. The converse is true--any disc-based PS5 can also transform into a disc-less unit.

Assassin's Creed Mirage fails to launch with a weird error code on Xbox
Some players of Assassin's Creed Mirage have been experiencing a bug that has left them unable to play the game on the Xbox.
Wccftech spotted that Microsoft took to X (formerly Twitter) to let affected Xbox gamers know that the firm is aware of the problem, where an error code (0x87e10bc6) appears, and is investigating.
That error is popping up when Assassin's Creed Mirage is first launched, and the game crashes with it rather than reaching the menu.
Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree rumored to arrive in February 2024
Elden Ring's expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, now has a rumored release date, so you can tentatively pencil in February 5, 2024, in your diary (assuming you've bought one for next year already).
As Wccftech spotted, the news comes from YouTuber Ziostorm, who shared the rumor about Shadow of the Erdtree on X (formerly Twitter) as you can see above.
The first thing to note here is that the speculation comes from "unverified sources" which gives us cause for concern. Furthermore, we're told that those sources haven't come up with anything concrete.
Here's exactly how much Titanium is in an iPhone 15 Pro and how much it's worth
YouTuber JerryRigEverything has taken a part an iPhone 15 Pro Max, disassembling Apple's latest device until just the chassis was left.
The YouTuber is testing Apple's claim of a new design that includes a combination of titanium and aluminum through a technology called "Solid State Diffusion". JerryRigEverything previously found that Apple does include a layer of titanium on the outside facing side of the chassis, but has now set the goal of finding out exactly how much titanium is present once all the aluminum has been melted away. The above video shows the YouTuber throwing the chassis into a furnace, explaining aluminum melts at 1,500 F and titanium melts at 3,000 F.
Furthermore, the YouTuber explains that the material used to build Apple's new iPhone 15 Pro Max underwent X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scans, an analytical technique used to determine the elemental composition of a material, and the results lined up exactly where a grade 5 titanium alloy would land. The results from the melting down of the chassis were impressive, as all that was left was the outer shell of phone, showing exactly how much titanium was used and where.
EU sends warning letter to Elon Musk over X sharing illegal Hamas terrorist attack content
EU Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton posted a letter addressed to Elon Musk warning him of what will come if X continues hosting disinformation/misinformation.
The letter specifically states instances where X has hosted content regarding the attacks in Israel and Palestine and the quality of that content. According to the EU Commissioner, many of these instances resulted in X spreading false information or misinformation, as the posts were "illegal". The letter requests that Musk stop the spread of misinformation on the platform by tightening the systems that are already in place that filter out posted content.
Brenton outlined three key areas of interest in the letter, with the first being a call for the enforcement of content policies. Secondly, it was for X to take faster action when it's alerted on illegal content being posted on the platform, as the speed of the response is critical to mitigating the spread of the misinformation. Lastly, Breton told X to establish "mitigation measures" that will be designed to reduce the risk of disinformation reaching the community and influencing public security.
Microsoft kills Bing Chat AI image generator after Mickey Mouse 9/11 picture surfaces
Last week Microsoft rolled out a new AI-powered image-generation feature to its Bing search engine, and it's already been lobotomized.
According to a report from Windows Central, the new AI-powered image generator is powered by DALL-E 3, an image generator algorithm designed by OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT. The new algorithm was implemented into the Bing search engine last week, and users flocked to the new feature to see where its guardrails were situatuated and if they could be circumvented. It's safe to say they were, as users generated many offensive, racist, controversial, and defamatory images that resulted in Microsoft over-correcting with the guardrails.
Among the notable images that were generated by users within the first few days of the new feature being available on Bing; Mickey Mouse hijacking plane, officially called "Mickey Mouse causing 9/11". The user that created this image got around Microsoft's ban of the keywords "9/11" and "Twin Towers" by writing, "Mickey Mouse sitting in the cockpit of a plane, flying towards two tall skyscrapers". There was also the problem of Bing Chat's image generator creating perfect replicas of copyrighted characters such as Mickey Mouse.
NASA telescope snaps photograph of a lurking black hole blanketed in stars
NASA has highlighted a new image snapped by its iconic Hubble Space Telescope, this time concentrating on the barred spiral galaxy known as NGC 5068.
As the space agency explains in its blog post, NGC 5068 is a barred spiral galaxy that contains thousands of dense star-forming regions, with each region varying in age. NASA writes that these regions also contain various quantities of interstellar dust. As for location, NGC 5068 is approximately 20 million light-years from Earth and resides in the constellation Virgo.
An unmissable point of the image is the bright bar located at the top center. This region of space is densely packed with mature stars, and behind them is a black hole pulling all of the stars closer and closer together with its intense gravitational pull. The bright pinkish-red smudges or dots across the image are regions of space that contain ionized hydrogen gas or locations of young star clusters. Another nice find within this time is the existence of 110 Wolf-Rayet stars, which are a type of star that burns its fuel (loses mass) at a very high rate.
Minnesota man wins $30,000 and sets new record for heaviest pumpkin in the world
With Halloween only a few weeks away, a Minnesota man has broken the world record for growing the heaviest pumpkin - or the jack-o-lantern of all jack-o-lanterns.
The new world record was set on Monday in California when Travis Gienger of Anoka, Minnesota, weighed his behemoth pumpkin that measures 2,749 pounds, breaking the previous world record of 2,702 pounds set by an Italian man in 2021. So, what was his secret to success? Science, of course, or more specifically, horticulture, a field of study that specializes in the cultivation of plants in gardens and greenhouses.
Gienger is a horticulture teacher at Anoka Technical College and has been growing pumpkins since he was a teenager, inspired by his father's aspirations to grow pumpkins. Gienger said that he decided to give his pumpkins extra care this year by watering them up to 12 times in a day, and feeding/fertilizing them more than usual. The accomplishment of now being the world record holder for the world's heaviest pumpkin came with a $30,000 prize check.
Tens of millions across the Americas will get hit with rare 'ring of fire' solar eclipse
Millions of people will be able to witness a rare astronomical event this coming weekend, with the "ring of fire" solar eclipse hitting the skies across multiple parts of the western US states.
Additionally, residents in Central America and South America will be able to view the solar eclipse, which is an astronomical event that occurs when the moon lines up perfectly between the Earth and the Sun, causing the inner area of the Sun to be blotted out. The ring is caused by the moon being too far away from the Sun, which results in the iconic ring of fire that is illustrated above. This border of flame will appear in the skies for approximately 5 minutes.
So, when will this all happen? According to reports, the solar eclipse will begin in the North Pacific and enter the US over Oregon at around 8 am PDT on Saturday. The eclipse will begin to display its ring of fire about an hour after it begins. The solar eclipse will then move from Oregon down across Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and finally, Texas. Regions of the following states will get brief glimpses of the event; Idaho, California, Arizona, and Colorado.
Intel official slide: new Core i9-14900K is up to 23% faster in gaming than AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D
Intel is about to release its new Core i9-14900K flagship "Raptor Lake Refresh" CPUs directly into the jaws of AMD's freaking kick-ass Ryzen 9 7950X3D processor... and now we have some performance numbers to go over from an official Intel slide that has been leaked.
The leaked presentation looks at the more CPU-limited resolution of 1080p, where some serious CPU power is needed there, with a bunch of games running on both the new Intel Core i9-14900K, and the competitors flagship 3D V-Cache CPU: the Ryzen 9 7950X3D.
AMD with its Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor has more performance in some games over the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, because particular games enjoy not having to work across the dual CCDs on the higher-end CPU. In some titles, the 7950X3D is better, across more titles the 7800X3D is better.
NASA's Webb telescope photographs boat-like shape in space
The world's most powerful space telescope has imaged a star-forming region, the Small Magellanic Cloud, which is within a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way.
The new image was released by NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), where both agency's explain that Webb's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) was used to capture the stunning region of space. Officially named NGC 346, astronomers have already scoured over the image and detected 1,001 sources of light, which translates to young stars that are covered in dust, according to a statement from the ESA.
Webb's ability to capture the region of space in both near-infrared and mid-infrared wavelengths of light enables astronomers to gain a deeper understanding of the evolution of stars and protostars, within this region of space and many others like it. The results from these observations lead astronomers and astrophysicists to understand the evolution of galaxies, such as our own Milky Way, and points in time, such as the beginning of the universe.

NASA gives update on astronauts aboard ISS while the space station is leaking fluid
Just over 250 miles up, the International Space Station (ISS), a multinational floating laboratory, is spilling coolant out into space.
The coolant leak emerged on Monday, October 9, and was traced back to a Russian module attached to the station. Notably, the leak consisted of Toxic ammonia flakes that were observed on the Russian Nauka Multipurpose Laboratory Module (MLM) at around 1 p.m. EDT. These flakes were observed through cameras on the ISS's exterior, and were emanating from one of two radiators on MLM.
Roscosmos confirmed the leak that was observed on MLM, and found its source was Nauka's backup radiator, which was delivered to the space station in 2010. NASA writes in its blog post that astronauts aboard the ISS were "never in any danger". It remains unclear if the leak will require a spacewalk to be fixed. NASA writes that teams on Earth and aboard the ISS will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates when available.
