Palit announces GeForce GTX 770 JetStream 2GB with triple fan cooler

Charles Gantt | Graphics Cards | May 30, 2013 2:04 PM CDT

This morning, Palit released its version of the GeForce GTX 770 and unlike other GPU manufacturers, Palit chose to toss away the reference design cooler and add their own JetStream cooler into the mix. The result is said to be a 10 percent gain in overclockability as well as some snazzy good looks!

The Palit GeForce GTX 770 JetStream 2GB ships with a 10 percent higher core clock, which Palit says equates to 10 percent higher gaming performance. Like other video cards in Palit's JetStream line, the GTX 770 comes equipped with the company's signature JetStream 80mm,90mm,80mm triple fan bank that cools the GPU by 15 Celsius lower, and is 9dB quieter than the reference design.

Motorola CEO confirms the X Phone is real, says it will be made in the US

Trace Hagan | Mobile Devices | May 29, 2013 6:47 PM CDT

Motorola's CEO, Dennis Woodside, has confirmed that the rumored X Phone is real. He adds that the device will be made right here in the United States. The device will be Motorola's flagship device and is called the Moto X. It will make use of an OLED screen.

The device will be built-in Texas in a 480,000-square-foot facility currently making Nokia devices. Woodside cheerfully announced that the Moto X will be the first smartphone to be built-in the United States. He added that breakability and battery life are two main focuses for the device.

Woodside had the phone in his pocket while doing the interview, but refused to show it. Android's Sundar Pinchai has seen the device, but Woodside said that Motorola is the same as any Android vendor. "We're hiring out of Google, but once you come to Motorola you give up your Google badge. It really is separate."

ReportTT: Apple looking to Pegatron to produce low-cost iPhone

Trace Hagan | Business, Financial & Legal | May 29, 2013 6:02 PM CDT

Apple is reportedly looking towards Pegatron to produce their rumored low-cost iPhone. The Wall Street Journal reports that Pegatron will be the primary producer of a new low-cost iPhone as Apple looks to diversify its supply chain. Up until 2011, Foxconn was responsible for all iPhone production.

According to the report, which cites people familiar with the matter, Apple is making the shift in order to reduce risk. They note the issues Foxconn had with the iPhone 5, including scratches on the metal casings. Apple will also be producing more product lines and product, meaning they'll need more capacity.

Analysts also believe Pegatron is willing to accept lower profit margins while attempting to gain Apple's business, meaning higher profit for Apple.

All PlayStation 4 games will be required to support Remote Play with PS Vita

Trace Hagan | Gaming | May 29, 2013 4:32 PM CDT

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Sutdios at Sony Computer Entertainment, has confirmed that all PlayStation 4 games will be required to support the Remote Play feature with the PlayStation Vita. This should be good news for the PlayStation Vita, which has suffered from slow sales.

The requirement was confirmed via a tweet by Yoshia, who added some details to the requirement: "It's true [they will be required to support Remote Play] unless the game requires specific hardware like the camera. It will be great to play PS4 games on PS Vita."

One of the main causes for slow PS Vita sales is its small library of games. By forcing Remote Play upon all PlayStation 4 games, Sony is effectively expanding the library of the Vita to include all the new PlayStation 4 games. We'll still have to see just how well its implemented, but what we've seen so far looks promising.

MiKandi has recently grown to become the largest adult app developer for Android and features its creations on its own app store, the MiKandi Store.

"Google Glass Porn has been making its rounds, and while studios are intrigued, no one seems to be doing anything about it, we picked up our Glass and, yup, we're making content for it," said Jennifer McEwen, co-founder of MiKandi "As far as I know, we're one of the few, if not the only, adult companies with the device right now. So far, it's really fun!"

LeakedTT: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 specs surface, pricing may be cheaper than previously thought

Charles Gantt | Graphics Cards | May 29, 2013 5:42 AM CDT

Things are looking good for NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce GTX 770 this morning as new specifications and pricing information has leaked. The GTX 770 appears to be identical to the GTX 680 in hardware but will feature higher clocks and faster memory frequency. The leak comes from retailers located in Tokyo's Akihabara shopping district in the form of photographs taken of the sales sheet on a monitor.

The chip is said to be clocked at 1046MHz and will feature a massive 7GHz memory clock. If these specifications are true, then the GTX 770 will be the highest clocked GPU ever made, albeit with a power draw of 230 watts. The card will feature the same cooling solution used on the GTX 780 and GTX TITAN. Combining the speed with good looks and topping things off with a pricing point of $400 makes the GTX 770 the best bang for your buck GPU on the market.

Charles Gantt | Storage | May 29, 2013 5:29 AM CDT

This morning storage company Silicon Power released its latest portable hard drive, the Stream S03. The new portable hard drive features design cues that were inspired by how folded pages may look in a book.

The Stream S03 features a matte finish which does well to hide fingerprints and stains while still maintaining the sleek and stylish streamlined design the Stream series is known for. In addition, the portable storage device utilizes rounded corners that allow users to handle the device with ease.

Located on the "page fold" corner is the LED status light which turns red when a USB 2.0 port is used and Blue when connected to USB 3.0. The Stream S03 is available in 500GB and 1TB capacities and features a free backup utility as well as a three-year warranty.

Charles Gantt | Processors | May 29, 2013 4:59 AM CDT

AMD has just launched a new line of new super low-power processors that are aimed at the NAS and microserver markets. The quad-core and dual-core processors, code-named Kyoto, are designed for high density servers where computer makers try to jam as many processors in a small amount of space as possible.

The new processors include the Opteron X2150 which is the quad-core variant which consumes about 11 watts of power while the Opteron X1150 features dual cores and consumes about 9 watts of power. Both processors are clocked at 2GHz and are said to run faster than similar Intel Atom processors.

Plex 3.0 released for Android and 3.2 update for iOS

Charles Gantt | Software & Apps | May 29, 2013 3:03 AM CDT

A Plex refresh for Android has been in the works for sometime now. The popular media streaming application gets an entirely new look for Android while the 3.2 version for iOS gets some bug fixes.

The refresh provides a much more polished and elegant interface while improving access times to larger libraries. The initial 3.0 release had a bug forced the app to require a MyPlex account as well not allowing the remote control widget to function properly. iOS users have had Plex 3.0 for some time now and the 3.2 update brings forth some tangeable improvements including speedier media access, fixes for Plex Sync. Other improvements include letting the iOS app serve as a remote playback target for other Plex equipped devices.

As a user of Plex for some time now, this update is a most welcome one. I love Plex's ease of setup and use and the ability to not only stream content hosted on local servers, but the ability to watch web based content from hundreds of free sources such as Revision3. I will be covering how to set up Plex in an upcoming how to article in which we will build a small form factor home media server, so stay tuned to TweekTown for that.

RumorTT: HTC to release 'Liquidmetal' smartphone this year, won't be called the T-1000

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | May 29, 2013 1:29 AM CDT

HTC are up and down right now, as the company have been bleeding employees for a while, but have seen a horizon of success with their One smartphone. But if DigiTimes' article is correct, maybe we could see HTC turn things around with a new smartphone made from amorphous metal alloy.

The 'Liquidmetal' smartphone would debut later in the year, and will see HTC partner up with Taiwanese chassis maker Jabon International to help manufacture the device. If HTC can make it to the market with their Liquidmetal smartphone, it could light a fire under Apple who were interested in using Liquidmetal for future iPhone's. HTC have reportedly started hiring chassis manufacturing experts to help incorporate the technology into future products.

PC market is still in trouble, new projections see the market continue to tumble into 2014

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | May 29, 2013 12:33 AM CDT

We all know the PC market isn't doing too well, but new projections from the IDC think that we haven't seen the worst of it just yet. According to the IDC's latest numbers, PC shipments will continue to decline, by 7.8% in 2013 and will fall by another 1.2% in 2014.

IDC are projecting that 2014's numbers are a little stronger as companies that continue to use Windows XP will shift to Windows 8 once Microsoft halts support for the older OS next year. The drop in PC sales are of course thanks to the constantly surging numbers for smart devices such as smartphones and tablets. IDC analyst Loren Loverde says:

Apple may grovel back to Samsung for future display production

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | May 28, 2013 11:32 PM CDT

Last year it was reported that Apple would switch from their reliance on their biggest competitor, Samsung, for their displays and shift to others like LG Display or AU Optronics. Well folks, it seems that Apple is considering new contracts with Samsung for displays in the future.

Korean site ETNews.com is reporting that Apple would resume purchasing LCD's from Samsung Display, as the South Korean giant are better equipped to keep up with Apple's high demand:

Dotcom has Hollywood in tears over Mega, movie studios are asking Google to censor Mega

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | May 28, 2013 10:27 PM CDT

Kim Dotcom has Hollywood's feathers rustled over his new Mega service, with Warner Bros. and NBC Universal asking Google to remove Mega from their search results, claiming that Dotcom's service is hosting copyrighted material on its servers.

Dotcom has hit back, as usual, where he responded to the requests in a statement to TorrentFreak, where he said the requests are the same "unreasonable content industry behavior" that he has put up with for years now. Google haven't complied with the movie studio's requests just yet, with the Mega domain continuing to show up in Google search results. Dotcom does note that a lot of these requests are actually false alarms, which happen from an automated and abusive system:

Acer updates C7 Chromebook line with SSD's, prices start at just $199

Trace Hagan | Laptops | May 28, 2013 7:02 PM CDT

Acer announced today that they are updating their C7 Chromebook line with new models that feature SSD's to improve boot times and responsiveness. Best Buy is one of the first companies selling the new models and has the Acer C710-2833 available for just $199, an impressive price considering it features an SSD.

The specifications for the Acer C710-2833 include an 11.6-inch display and Intel Celeron Processor 847. This 1.1GHz processor is coupled with 2GB of RAM, a 16GB SSD, 3 USB 2.0 ports, 1 HDMI port, Intel HD graphics, and a 4-cell battery. One important aspect that appears to be missing is USB 3.0

With the small (16GB) SSD, storage space will be at a premium and users will likely make use of external drives. It would be ideal for these drives to be able to communicate with the system over USB as it provides much more bandwidth than USB 2.0. Still, I can't complain with a price tag of just $199.

Microsoft says Xbox One's Kinect sensor can be completely turned off

Trace Hagan | Gaming | May 28, 2013 4:02 PM CDT

Several groups have spoken out over privacy concerns and the always-on, always-listening Xbox One Kinect sensor. Microsoft has confirmed that the new Kinect sensor can be completely turned off. Fears were that a hacker could gain access to the system and use it to spy on the console's owners.

Thankfully, this shouldn't be the case. According to a Microsoft spokesperson, "It is not always watching or always listening." Microsoft unveiled quite a bit at their press conference, but neglected to spill all of the details, which has contributed to some of the rumors and concerns circulating the web.

The spokesperson added, "Yes, you can turn the system completely off. This would use no power and turn everything off. We'll share more details about how it all works later."

MakerTT: Raspberry Pi Camera Module photographs the Earth from the edge of space

Charles Gantt | | May 28, 2013 1:30 PM CDT

The Raspberry Pi Camera Module has been officially released for two weeks now and makers and hackers around the globe have already began to do amazing things with the $25 module. Maker Dave Akerman strapped the camera module and Raspberry Pi board to a foam enclosure shaped like the Raspberry Pi logon and sent it into the sky via a weather balloon.

Akerman mounted the Raspberry Pi and Camera module combo into a high density foam case that he shaped into the form of the Raspberry Pi logo. Alongside the Pi and Camera was what appears to be an Arduino Pro mini, which may have handled the GPS sensor duties. Akerman also included two radios for better track-ability and data telemetry.

The flight lasted three hours and managed to fly to an altitude of 38.9km or about 24 miles into the sky before popping and falling back to earth. Akerman had some trouble finding the payload, but eventually managed to recover the device after getting a phone call from a bystander who happened to stumble upon it. LeakedTT: Next-generation Nexus 7 spotted in Bluetooth SIG filing

Charles Gantt | Mobile Devices | May 28, 2013 12:35 PM CDT

A May 27th filing at Bluetooth SIG has pulled back the wool a little further on the upcoming Nexus 7 refresh. The ASUS built "7" has been given the model number ME370T and should feature a new high resolution screen.

The refreshed Nexus 7 is said to be getting a Full HD 1920x180 7-inch LTPS display and will run a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core chipset. While the new display will be a nice feature, the device is listed as running the JWR11 firmware, which is highly speculated to be Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Reports say that tablet suppliers are hinting at a July release, but no pricing information or further specifications on features like cameras, internal storage, storage slots, battery ratings or accessories have been leaked thus far. The new display would make it the first 7-inch class tablet to feature a true full HD display.
