NVIDIA launches RTX 5090 D V2 in China for 16,499 yuan, up to $1400 cheaper than the RTX 5090

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 12, 2025 11:11 PM CDT

NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 5090 D V2 with a tweaked design and just 24GB of GDDR7 (regular RTX 5090 packs 32GB) has arrived to the shores of China, priced at the same price as the RTX 5090 D.

NVIDIA launches RTX 5090 D V2 in China for 16,499 yuan, up to $1400 cheaper than the RTX 5090

The new RTX 5090 D V2 is mostly unchanged for the most part across the board from the RTX 5090 D non-V2 variant, but the new RTX 5090 D V2 has a radically changed VRAM capacity of 24GB GDDR7 compared to 32GB on the RTX 5090 D and RTX 5090 graphics cards. The tweaks are for NVIDIA to meet US export restrictions to China, hence the new memory configuration.

NVIDIA's official website now lists the RTX 5090 D V2 and all of its GPU specifications, with the GB202-240 die and its 21,760 CUDA cores, 4th Gen Ray Tracing Cores, 5th Gen Tensor Cores, with 2375 AI TOPs of performance. This is compared to the RTX 5090 with 3352 AI TOPs.

PlayStation 6 ray tracing performance rumored to be FASTER than the RTX 5080

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 12, 2025 10:12 PM CDT

Sony's next-generation PlayStation 6 console is shaping up to be a monster 4K 120FPS system thanks to AMD semi-custom chips, with ray tracing performance thanks to RDNA 5 GPU cores in the PS6, could be better than the RTX 5080, and closer to the RTX 5090.

PlayStation 6 ray tracing performance rumored to be FASTER than the RTX 5080

In a new video from leaker Moore's Law is Dead, talks about the ray tracing (RT) performance of the next-gen PlayStation 6 console, and its new codename "Orion" semi-custom SoC from AMD. The PS6 will feature next-generation RDNA 5 GPU cores, with heavy uplifts in rasterization and ray tracing over the standard PS5 and its RDNA 2-based GPU.

The new PS5 Pro likely has RDNA 4-powered RT cores and some other RDNA 4-based optimizations and tweaks inside, with its superior RT performance over the standard PS5, but the next-gen PS6 is going to blow them both out of the water with a possible 5-10x in RT performance over the base PS5.

Battlefield 6 is the #1 top-selling premium game on Steam, reportedly reached 600K pre-orders

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 12, 2025 3:33 PM CDT

The Battlefield 6 open beta has directly translated to boosted pre-orders, with one analyst estimating over 600,000 people have bought the game ahead of time on Steam.

Battlefield 6 is the #1 top-selling premium game on Steam, reportedly reached 600K pre-orders

Battlefield 6 exploded onto the FPS market with a chaotically fun open beta, driving tons of buzz. The beta attracted half a million people on Steam, which is more peak players than any Call of Duty game in history.

BF6 is also currently the top #1 best-selling premium game on Steam right now. Battlefield 6 has actually kept this position for two weeks now.

Xbox and PlayStation join forces with one of the most on-the-nose crossovers in gaming history

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 12, 2025 2:32 PM CDT

The walls of gaming continue to fall as Xbox and PlayStation openly cooperate with game crossover content.

Xbox and PlayStation join forces with one of the most on-the-nose crossovers in gaming history

Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox on August 26, and to celebrate, Sony dropped a new trailer for the game on the Xbox channel. After decades of fierce rivalry, where Microsoft even called Sony a "hostile" competitor, it still feels jarring to see a PlayStation logo on Xbox content.

Microsoft was the first to break exclusivity with Xbox games and to great effect; Xbox earnings are higher than ever. There's signs Sony may do the same with its own games, at least selectively. Sony is currently moving away from a hardware-oriented business, focusing more on engagement and users, leading them to bring their best-selling live service game Helldivers 2 to Xbox.

Space-grade engineering hits the PC gaming market, replaces thermal paste

Jak Connor | Gaming | Aug 12, 2025 2:02 PM CDT

Cutting-edge carbon nanotube technology that was previously reserved for space-based missions has now made its way into the PC gaming market, and it's attempting to replace thermal paste as a premium option.

Space-grade engineering hits the PC gaming market, replaces thermal paste

Carbon nanotube technology involves the use and manipulation of carbon nanotubes, which are extremely small cylindrical structures that are entirely made out of carbon atoms that are arranged in a hexagonal pattern.

The material offers some key characteristics that make it applicable for space-based missions, such as its exceptional strength of being about 100 times stronger than steel by weight, high electrical conductivity, excellent thermal conductivity, very lightweight, and flexible despite its strength.

Resident Evil movie won't star Leon, Weapons director Zach Cregger says it'll be a 'new story'

A new Resident Evil horror movie is in development and it will tell a brand new narrative that's separate from the games--that means no Leon or Claire story arcs.

Resident Evil movie won't star Leon, Weapons director Zach Cregger says it'll be a 'new story'

Zach Cregger, the director of acclaimed horror movies Weapons (2025) and Barbarian (2022), is lending his creative vision to a new Resident Evil movie. The film aims to capture the creeping dread from the original games, of which Cregger is a huge fan--especially RE4.

While we don't know official story details just yet, Cregger tells Inverse that it won't be another rehash of the games. This isn't an adaptation of a particular game, but of the series as a whole, set with macabre overtones.

Halo game that's playable on PlayStation discovered by dataminer

Dataminers have uncovered what is believed to be evidence that Halo titles are making their way over to PlayStation.

Halo game that's playable on PlayStation discovered by dataminer

The information is sourced from Grunt.api and RebsGaming, with RebsGaming being known for his information on the Halo Games and pointing to Grunt.api as a source in the past. As for credibility, in 2021, Grunt.api accurately predicted the release date for Halo Infinite's multiplayer mode. As for the new information, the dataminer looked into the Application Programming Interface (API) of Halo and found, "new Halo title with PlayStation compatibility is listed in the API".

Additionally, the same title was discovered in PlayFab last Monday, which is a backend platform that assists in cross-platform matchmaking, progression, and unified online services. Furthermore, a new beta title, along with a second new Halo title with PlayStation compatibility, were discovered within the API, but the dataminer said there isn't much information on either of these titles.

A handheld with an RTX 4090 GPU? Cyberpunk 2077 runs at 60 FPS in 4K on DIY gaming portable

Darren Allan | Gaming | Aug 12, 2025 12:45 PM CDT

A gaming handheld packing an NVIDIA RTX 4090 graphics card sounds improbable, but an eye-opening DIY effort has achieved just this - and it boasts some seriously nippy frame rates while staying impressively cool.

As Notebookcheck picked up (via TechRadar), this is the work of Qingchen DIY on Bilibili, as showcased by NITTRX on YouTube (see this video clip).

It's a 12.5-inch handheld PC - obviously stretching the definition of portable to some extent - which comes with an RTX 4090 of the mobile variety with 16GB of VRAM (it's not like it would ever be a desktop GPU, of course). That's partnered with an Intel Core-i9 14900HX laptop CPU (with 24-cores), and the display is a 4K affair with a 60Hz refresh rate.

FBC Firebreak was a commercial disappointment, earns primarily via PS Plus, Game Pass deals

FBC Firebreak, the new multiplayer shooter from Max Payne and Alan Wake studio Remedy, has fallen flat for the Finnish developer.

Remedy's first self-published game hasn't found success, at least at launch. The company today acknowledged the commercial disappointment of FBC Firebreak's launch, especially on Steam, where the game "underperformed."

Interestingly enough, FBC Firebreak helped boost year-over-year sales. Remedy also saw an uplift from Firebreak's launch via direct game sales and earnings from subscription deals made with PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass.

Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake is currently in development by Remedy Entertainment and Rockstar Games, according to a new report.

Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake currently in development by Rockstar and Remedy Entertainment

The last time we heard about the Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake was in Remedy's last financial report, where it said development was moving along at a steady pace, with the game entering full production in 2024. The financial report revealed that production on the two Remakes is still in "full production," with the team at Remedy building on the steady momentum from earlier in the year.

Moreover, the statement revealed, "Collaboration with Rockstar Games remains close and productive, ensuring alignment as the project advances toward its next major phase." The statement revealed that Remedy and Rockstar have teamed up for the remake, but it still remains unclear what the share of the development work is, and more specifically, what level of involvement Rockstar has in the project. Despite the unknown, it's great to know that development is continuing for the Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake.

The first open beta weekend for Battlefield 6 was a massive success with more than 500,000 players jumping into the action-packed game on Steam, with thousands more across other platforms. The chaos doesn't stop there, as weekend two is coming up.

Battlefield 6 players will be able to enjoy a new map and modes next weekend

The second weekend of the open beta will usher in some new changes, such as the inclusion of new maps and game modes for players to enjoy. The news was announced by Daniel Cambrand, an Environmental Artist at EA DICE, and a current member of the Battlefield development team. Cambrand took to his personal X account to share his thanks for the massive reception of the first open beta weekend, and added that in the upcoming beta weekend, players will be able to jump into Rush and Squad Deathmatch.

In addition to the new modes, Cambrand revealed there would be a new map, Empire State. Moreover, the new modes and map will be on top of the already included maps and modes within the beta, which, for those who can't remember or don't know what they are, are Liberation Peak, Siege of Cairo, and Iberian Offensive, as for modes, Conquest, Closed Weapon Conquest, Breakthrough, Domination, and King of the Hill.

Roblox threatens to sue child predator hunter over exposing grooming

Roblox threatens to sue child predator hunter over exposing grooming

Lawyers representing The Roblox Corporation have banned Schlep and all of his accounts following a cease and desist letter being sent to the YouTuber, who has more than 640,000 subscribers. Schlep posted a recent video explaining the letter from Roblox, which claims the YouTuber is "engaging in simulated child endangerment conversations, sharing or soliciting personally identifiable information (PII), [and] directing users to move conversations off-platform."

Notably, Schlep claims to have directly influenced the arrest of six predators using the Roblox ecosystem for participating in nefarious grooming activity. Moreover, Schlep says during the video that he experienced grooming by an individual when he was younger, and that his motivation behind his vigilante activities on Roblox is to prevent what happened to him from happening to other children using the platform.

Battlefield 6 beta results in RTX 5090 catching fire mid-game

Jak Connor | Graphics Cards | Aug 12, 2025 3:53 AM CDT

The Battlefield 6 multiplayer entered its public beta on August 10, and more than 500,000 Steam users flocked to the title throughout the weekend. Unfortunately, one of those PC gamers discovered their RTX 5090 caught fire and started melting mid-game.

Battlefield 6 beta results in RTX 5090 catching fire mid-game

The user said they noticed something was up when the game started freezing mid-match, and then an odor began to fill the room. The smell was shortly followed by a fire that reportedly lasted around 10 seconds. Notably, the area that has sustained most of the damage is where the GPU undercarriage meets the motherboard, specifically right before the PCIe slot. The graphics card is a ZOTAC GeForce RTX 5090, and judging from the images posted, the fire was significant enough to leave significant damage to the card, case, and some surrounding components.

Reports indicate the owner purchased the system as a prebuilt, which, thankfully for them, will make claiming warranty on the rig much easier (hopefully). The PC has been returned to the store and is currently undergoing an investigation by the manufacturer. As for what caused the fire, the specifics are currently unknown, as typically when a GPU is involved in a fire or melting scenario, it has to do with incorrect seating of the power connector cables, or in the case of an RTX 4090, a flawed power connector design.

Ubisoft hides its accidental announcement for a Far Cry TV show

Ubisoft seems to have accidentally revealed there is work being done on a Far Cry TV show over at FX, the television network owned by Disney, and the creators of the hit TV show Fargo.

Ubisoft hides its accidental announcement for a Far Cry TV show

The accidental reveal of the TV show was done by none other than Ubisoft itself, which posted a news article about the show on its own website over the weekend. The post was quickly removed, but not before it was noticed by Redditors who shared it to the /r/Far Cry subreddit. The post has since been removed from the Far Cry subreddit, but not before publications captured its details. According to Eurogamer, the new TV show will be an "anthology drama" where "each season will be set in a new world with a different cast of characters."

According to the report, the show is being produced by Noah Hawley, the creator of the Fargo series for FX, as well as Alien: Earth, a new show that released just this week. Additionally, the Far Cry TV show is being co-executive produced and will star Rob McElhenney of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It should be noted that Ubisoft has been known to be working on numerous alternative media adaptations of its IP that haven't yet, and perhaps never will see the light of day.

AOL is finally discontinuing its dial-up internet service, after 34 years

Kosta Andreadis | Internet & Websites | Aug 12, 2025 12:31 AM CDT

For those who lived through the dial-up internet days, you'll no doubt have the sound a modem makes when it does its 'dialling' imprinted on your brain forever. You'll also remember that the slow 28.8K and 56K speeds we lived with meant that you had to download images and that it took several minutes to listen to a single song in compressed MP3 format.

AOL is finally discontinuing its dial-up internet service, after 34 years

In the United States, America Online or AOL was synonymous with dial-up internet throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. The company gained notoriety by sending out CD-ROMs to anyone with a mailbox, offering free trials to its service alongside an email address that ends with aol.com. With millions of AOL customers going online, the company also helped usher in the age of instant messaging with AOL Instant Messenger and chat rooms - your 1998 version of Discord.

Even though the term 'AOL' conjures up memories of the age of Netscape Navigator and the Excite search engine, you might be surprised to learn that AOL's dial-up internet service is still a thing that exists. But not for long, as the company has announced that after 34 years of various beep and static sounds, it's set to discontinue its 'Dial-up Internet' service on September 30.

Meta teases next-gen VR headset technology that is 'indistinguishable' from real life

Kosta Andreadis | Extended Reality (XR) | Aug 11, 2025 11:34 PM CDT

Meta is showcasing new prototype VR headsets at SIGGRAPH 2025, with the company posting a new in-depth article outlining the latest technologies and breakthroughs of its new 'Tiramisu' hyperrealistic VR headset and the 'Boba 3' headset that increases the FOV (field-of-view) to get closer to how humans see than ever before.

Meta teases next-gen VR headset technology that is 'indistinguishable' from real life

According to the post, the teams within Meta's Reality Labs Research are working to "create virtual experiences that are indistinguishable from the physical world," and they believe that its prototype Tiramisu VR headset is a big step toward that reality. Its custom micro-OLED panels feature a resolution and pixel density that is 3.6X what is currently offered in the Meta Quest 3. It also features three times the contrast ratio and a peak brightness of up to 1,400 nits.

The brightness aspect alone is impressive, and to render real-time Unreal Engine 5-powered visuals that can be displayed on the Tiramisu headset, it needs NVIDIA DLSS to mitigate the high performance cost. It sounds impressive, but the technology is currently limited. The Tiramisu headset is bulky, and the FOV is limited to 30 degrees on either axis, so you're essentially looking at a virtual box.
