Confirmed: Apple buys Intel's modem division for $1 billion
We knew it was coming but now it is official: Apple has acquired Intel's modem division including 17,000 patents and most of its staff, for $1 billion.
Intel will see around 2200 of its employees joining Apple, with physical equipment and facilities to be transferred from Intel to Apple now that the deal is done. Intel is abandoning the modem market, but it's not getting rid of everything in the division. The company explains it will "retain the ability to develop modems for non-smartphone applications, such as PCs, internet-of-things devices and autonomous vehicles".
Apple's SVP of Hardware Technologies Johny Srouji adds: "Apple is excited to have so many excellent engineers join our growing cellular technologies group, and know they'll thrive in Apple's creative and dynamic environment. They, together with our significant acquisition of innovative IP, will help expedite our development on future products and allow Apple to further differentiate moving forward".

Epic Store cloud saves are live, but only for a few games
The Epic Store now has cloud saves in select new games, but widespread adoption will be slower.
The Epic Store is missing lots of basic features you'd expect from an online digital storefront, let alone one ran by a billion-dollar company. That's starting to change slowly but surely, and Tim Sweeney today confirmed that newer titles like the now-free indie Moonlighter will support cloud saves. Both new and old games require manual updates from the store team, and there's no word on when all games will get cloud saves. Sadly there was no update on a shopping cart (which is arguably more important).
"Cloud saves are enabled for a couple of new games right now. We have a bit more work to do before rolling it out more widely," Sweeney said on Twitter.

Cyberpunk 2077 won't be playable at Gamescom 2019
CD Projekt RED still isn't ready for press and gamers to try out Cyberpunk 2077, but their massive sci-fi opus will still be at Gamescom.
Today CDPR revealed its plans for Gamescom 2019, which includes live on-floor demos of Cyberpunk 2077 in action. Sadly gamers and attendees can't actually try the game out. The demos aren't hands-on and instead are played by the dev team. Similar to E3 2019, press will get access to a more one-on-one gameplay demo behind closed doors, likely conducted on insane PC hardware powered by an NVIDIA RTX Titan GPU.
"Entertainment area pass holders will be able to watch Cyberpunk 2077 being played live by members of the development team at the game's booth located in Hall 6, Stand C049. These presentations will take place Wednesday, August 21st through Saturday, August 24th.

Microsoft redesigns Xbox One dashboard for the 10,000th time
It seems like Microsoft spends way too much time trying to "streamline" and "optimize" the Xbox One dashboard. Now they're doing it again.
The Xbox One dashboard is weird. At first it was the worst console UI that I've ever seen. Then it slowly got better, but slightly more confusing each time as Microsoft moved and shifted everything around. It seemed like once you got used to something, it changed. Now the tile-based interface is getting updated once again.
Key changes include the removal of Cortana voice-assisted searching and a shift to the home UI. Services are strategically placed on-screen at the home menu to remind you that yes, you can sign up for Game Pass, and the Discover tab is literally more visible than your recently-played games.

SpaceX ISS cargo mission delayed by 24hrs from bad weather
If you didn't know, SpaceX planned to launch a rocket to the International Space Station on a cargo mission. That planned flight has been unfortunately delayed.
The original scheduled launch was for today, July 24th and SpaceX's workhorse rocket the Falcon 9 was planned to take a robotic Dragon cargo capsule. The location for the launch was from Launch Complex 40 at Cap Canaveral Air Force Station at 6:24 p.m. EDT (2024 GMT).
This isn't the first time the Falcon 9 and the Dragon have taken flight, as SpaceX has already gotten two completed flights to the ISS. According to the Air Force's 45th Space Wing Weather Squadron, there was only a 30% chance that today's weather would act as expected. Will Ulrich, a official employee at the Weather Squadron said "Today's weather looks terrible. There's a pretty unique weather pattern we have in place. With an instantaneous window today, either the weather is good or it is not."

Microsoft's new start menu look makes you want to throw-up
Most PC users that use Windows enjoy the well-defined visual look of the start menu, imagine if that all changed and in the next Windows update it was massively big and bulky.
The above video is sourced from Windows Central who has got his hands-on Windows 10 internal build 118947. From the video, we are introduced to the new start menu appearance and what the user-interface (UI) will look like for Windows Insider users. Judging from the UI layout, Microsoft seem to be taking a more tile-like look to the start menu, creating bigger and more accessible app icons.
It should be noted that this is a very early design of the start-menu and is subject to change as Microsoft tweaks it here and there after they get insider feedback from users. For me personally, this menu is a step in the wrong direction as it reminds me too much of the sham Windows 8 was. The bulkiness adds a fatter look to the aesthetic design of Windows and doesn't improve the visual appearance at all. As for utility measures, how much does bigger app tiles really improve the users experience? And is it enough for Microsoft to roll out this to base Windows 10 OS's?

INCREDIBLE picture of a galaxy 70 million light years away
Most people are extremely curious of the vastness of space, as within the infinite black there is truly some beauty found in observing galaxies and star clusters. That is what we have here today, a perfect image of a galaxy millions of light-years away.
NASA's Hubble Telescope is one the leading telescopes that observe our universe and just a couple of days ago NASA release an image of a galaxy spotted. The galaxy that was observed was NGC 2985, which is about 70 million light-years from Earth and Hubble managed to capture the incredible above image.
From the image we can see that NGC 2985 is a spiral galaxy that is almost near symmetrical, which is quite rare for galaxies we have observed. This is because when a galaxy is developing over the course of millions of years they usually bleed into and become a part of a neighboring galaxy which creates a non-symmetrical appearance when observed. An example of this is our own Milky Way galaxy as 10 billion years ago it consumed a smaller galaxy about quarter of its size, more on that here.

AMD's 3rd/4th-gen Threadripper: codename Genesis and Vermeer
AMD has been pumping its new Ryzen 3000 series CPUs into the market, based on the new Zen 2 architecture and 7nm node, but where are the third-gen Ryzen Threadripper CPUs? First we thought they were axed, but then the glimpses of a monster 64C/128T next-gen Ryzen Threadripper started... and now they're back again.
The Ryzen Threadripper 3000-series CPUs has turned up in a UserBenchmark result as a 16C/32T part as codename Castle Peak, with 3.6/4.0GHz base and boost CPU clocks, respectively. This is an engineering sample so CPU clocks are generally lower and will improve before the CPU is in its final, and retail stages.
Even in engineering form the new Castle Peak-dubbed 16C/32T chip offers an overall performance increase of 11% in single-core tests compared to a Ryzen Threadripper 2950X and up to 18% more in multi-threaded tests. It is about identical with the Ryzen 9 3900X in single-core tests and 35% faster in multi-core.

Toyota to build NEXT-GEN lunar rover with remarkable range
Toyota has released a new video showcasing their next-gen lunar rover they have planned for manufacturing. The rover will be pressurized and will be able to house astronauts for some period of time.
In the above video which was been released onto the Toyota Motor Corporation YouTube Channel, we are introduced to the rover project that is a collaboration between The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Toyota. From the video we learn that the rover will use electric fuel cell technology and be equipped with solar panels to power its journeys across the moons surface.
The rover plans also include the ability of astronauts being able to live inside the rover for select amounts of time. The astronauts will also be able to remove their space suits as the inside of the rover will be pressurized. Toyota and JAXA expect that the rover will have a total lunar-surface cruising range of more than 10,000km, which is quite a feat when you consider that the total circumferance of the moons surface is just over 10,900km.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood will take you to the hamburger bar
The release of Wolfenstein: Youngblood is only hours away now, with Bethesda releasing a new launch trailer that teases a mystery, as well as the return of B.J. Blazkowicz.
Before he disappeared, Blazkowicz was looking for something important, and now his twin daughters are kicking some ass in the Wolfenstein world. Wolfenstein: Youngblood is different to other entries in the franchise with a more sandbox-style world is given to you to play in.
THere's also the huge co-op side of things since there are twin sisters to play throug hthe story, so with a single-player heavy yet sandbox-style gameplay it sounds like Wolfenstein: Youngblood could be quite interesting.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER tested in SLI at 1440p and 4K
NVIDIA released its new GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER earlier this week with reviews flying out in written and video forms (my review here), after the flurry of initial testing I decided to take at look at the SLI side of things with the RTX 2080 SUPER.
The new GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER has higher-clocked GDDR6 memory on-board, with its 8GB of GDDR6 clocked at 15.5Gbps up from the 14Gbps on the regular RTX 2080. I thought this would be an interesting addition to the SLI/NVLink testing I did on the RTX 2070 SUPER which has its 8GB of GDDR6 stock at 14Gbps.
The results were interesting, as we see in certain games that when SLI provides great scaling (4K and above is where you're going to get it) is monster performance at 4K. I've been doing 8K testing on the side and the results are even crazier, as you're rendering 400% more pixels than 4K -- and 4K is already hard enough.

Jedi: Fallen Order won't have a stamina bar, mirrors Sekiro
Respawn Entertainment took many of the best elements from Dark Souls and Sekiro and jammed them into their new Jedi power fantasy.
Right away Jedi: Fallen Order brings Dark Souls to mind. Instead of using a medieval weapon, you're using a lightsaber, and instead of eldritch magics, you wield Force powers. But the core combat framework is quite similar--there's rolling, dodging queues, and striking combos. But one critical feature makes Jedi: Fallen Order more like Sekiro: the lack of a stamina bar. This freedom was extremely important for Respawn at the start.
"I thought it was pretty badass, and a little comforting to know that you could make this type of game without a stamina bar. [Sekiro] lets you attack, it lets you roll, it does all this for free - and then the AI will tell you if you're doing the correct thing," game director Stig Asmussen said in a recent interview with EDGE Magazine.
