Tesla owners make $800 per month mining crypto with idle Tesla vehicle
Imagine your Tesla Model 3 electric vehicle sitting in your driveway not being used -- so what better way do make some money, than to mine cryptocurrency from your Tesla -- might as well, right?
That's just what Siraj Raval did with his flashy Tesla Model 3 vehicle, using an Apple Mac mini M1 system with some discrete GPUs, which are unknown at this point, but it would be a few discrete GPUs at the very least as Raval is making around $800 per month. Raval is aware that mining cryptocurrency from his Model 3 voids Tesla's warranty, too.
The price of Ethereum hit a peak towards the end of 2021, which is when Rajal said he was making $800 per month mining from his Tesla Model 3, with Bitcoin miner Alejandro de la Torre adding: "The main component is the price of the electricity. If it's cheaper doing it through an electric vehicle, then so be it". As for the crypto mining power of the Model 3, Tesla hacker and crypto miner Thomas Sohmers said: "The best estimate I would have for the hashrate for the GPU in the Model 3 would be around 7-10 MH/s. Currently, at 10 MH/s, that would generate revenue of about $13.38 worth of ether, before any expenses. The difficulty is so high...I could make more money working at McDonald's".

Take-Two Interactive is prepared to pay up to $12.7 billion for mobile games titan Zynga. The deal represents the largest acquisition buyout in video games history.
Grand Theft Auto and NBA 2K parent company Take-Two Interactive is planning to make video games history with the single largest buyout of all time. The publisher has made an offer to buyout Zynga's shares for $9.86, which implies a total price of $12.7 billion.
Take-Two's offer for Zynga beats Tencent's $10.2 billion buyout of Supercell in 2016 and Microsoft's $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax in 2021.

Intel's next-gen 'Alder County' NUC packs new discrete Arc GPU
Intel teased its next-gen "Alder County" NUC at CES 2022 and that it will have a discrete Arc GPU inside, and should act as the successor to the "King County" NUC.
The current Intel "King County" NUC acts as Intel's reference Laptop Kit (NUC X15) and features a high-performance laptop design with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU, or GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU. The next-gen "Alder County" NUC would have an "Alder Lake-P" processor and Intel Arc GPU.

Disney will bring the Metaverse to the real-world with this technology
Disney is taking some steps towards adopting the Metaverse as the company has been approved for a patent that creates new attractions at Disney theme parks.
According to the patent that was approved on December 28, 2021, Disney is moving towards developing new technology that will track visitors to its theme parks and then generate personalized 3D effects onto physical spaces located near the individual. This new technology doesn't require virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) headsets, and when created, it will be a major step towards Disney's own Metaverse.
The technology that Disney has patented is for a "virtual-world simulator in a real-world venue". Disney has previously expressed its interest in the Metaverse as the company's CEO Bob Chapek stated during a November 2021 earnings call that Disney is preparing to bring physical and digital assets more closely together, which will allow for "storytelling without boundaries in our own Disney Metaverse."

Facebook to be sued over its alleged role in murder of federal officer
The sister of a federal officer is suing Facebook's parent company, Meta, over its alleged role in the murder of Dave Patrick Underwood.
Angela Underwood Jacobs has officially filed a complaint in Alameda County Superior Court that claims the shooting of her brother, Dave Patrick Underwood, "was not a random act of violence" and that stems from a "culmination of an extremist plot hatched and planned on Facebook by two men who Meta connected through Facebook's groups infrastructure and its use of algorithms designed and intended to increase user engagement."
Underwood was killed in a drive-by shooting outside of a federal building in Oakland, California, in May 2020. The two men charged with his murder were found to be linked to an anti-government Facebook group that was later banned from the platform in June 2020. Jacobs claims that Facebook bears the responsibility of her brother's murder for allowing these groups to exist on its platform and furthermore allowing extremists within these to connect and plot.

Researchers drop most comprehensive image of black hole eruption yet
A team of researchers has captured the most comprehensive image of an erupting black hole yet, according to a new study published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Astronomy.
The team of researchers pointed the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) telescope in Western Australia at the galaxy Centaurus A, which contains the closest actively feeding supermassive black hole to Earth. The black hole located at the center of Centaurus A is currently engulfing large amounts of gas, which results in material being ejected out at high speeds.
This process and ejection of material cause what is described as "radio bubbles" that are then detected by MWA and interpreted by researchers. The researchers estimated the observed black hole has the mass of about 55 million suns and that the jets of material ejected out of it stretch as far as 1.8 million light-years. Due to Centaurs A's close proximity to Earth, researchers can accurately observe the black hole, leading them to believe that much can be learned from its near presence.

New study reveals dirty city air is killing millions of people
A study that looked at the urban air pollution levels for 2.5 billion people found that 86% of people living in cities around the world are exposed to unhealthy levels of pollution that can contribute to death.
The new study was published in The Lancet Planetary Health and looked at the levels of PM2.5, a particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less. Researchers behind the study wrote in their background notes that inhaling PM2.5 can lead to death from cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, lung cancer, and respiratory infection.
The study included 13,000 cities from around the world and looked at the PM2.5 concentrations of each from 2000 to 2019. The researchers found that the average population-weighted PM2.5 concentration globally was 35 micrograms per cubic meter in 2019, which is seven times the World Health Organization's 2021 guidelines. Additionally, the team estimated that in 2019, 61 in every 100,000 deaths can be attributed to an unhealthy consumption of PM2.5.

Lunar rover detects first signs of water on the surface of the Moon
Reports have surfaced regarding an announcement from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, which stated that water has been detected under the Moon's surface.
According to a new study published in Science Advances on Friday, data acquired by China's Chang'e 5 lunar lander indicates the presence of water under the surface of the Moon. The rover used its mineralogical spectrometer to analyze the chemical composition of rocks and soil at the landing site.
The analysis resulted in the detection of water molecules at a concentration of less than 120 parts per million, or around 120 grams of water in one tonne of lunar soil. Additionally, the study looked at the water concentration in rocks and found it was 180 parts per million and wrote that the discrepancy between the water concentration in the soil and rock is due to the rock likely originating from deeper in the lunar surface.

Origins found for mysterious 'house' on far side of the Moon
In December 2021, an affiliated Chinese media channel called "Our Space" reported on China's Yutu 2 rover spotting what was described as a "house" or "hut" on the far side of the moon.
China's Yutu 2 rover landed on the far side of the moon back in January 2019, and since then, it has been exploring the surface of the Von Karman crater, which is where it spotted the strange object on the horizon. The image seen above was sent back to the China National Space Administration (CNSA), and since then, the small Yutu 2 rover has been driving towards the object.
Now, reports indicate that the mysterious object has been renamed to the "moon cube" and that the CNSA has driven the rover 262 feet to reach the object. Initial reports indicated that it would take two or three months to reach the cube, but only after a few weeks, the rover was in range to identify the object. According to an update from Our Space, the object is a rock shaped like a rabbit, hence the new name for the object "Jade Rabbit".

NASA's Mars rover hit with a big problem it has never faced before
NASA has announced that its Perseverance rover and operating team are facing a challenge that they have never faced before.
The space agency took to its blog and social channels to announce that Perseverance recently captured its sixth Mars sample, but during the "Coring Bit Dropoff", the transferring period of the bit that contains the sample to the rover's storage section, the rover sensors detected an anomaly. According to NASA's blog post, as soon as the rover detected the anomaly, it halted all proceeding until further instructions from its team were provided.
After acquiring all relevant data on the anomaly, NASA's Perseverance team identified the problem by taking images of inside the rover's carousel. The images showed a few pieces of pebble-sized debris that the Perseverance team is confident came the most recently sampled Mars rock sample. NASA writes that these debris fell out of the sample tube at the time of the Coring Bit Dropoff, which is now preventing the sample from being correctly placed in the carousel.

NASA drops 'major' update for the James Webb Telescope unfolding
NASA has been rolling out the public updates for the development of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and now the space agency has released another.
NASA has taken to its blog and social channels to announce that at 1:17 on EST, January 8, 2022, the James Webb Space Telescope completed all of its large-scale deployments. The space agency writes that the primary mirror, secondary mirror tripod, and both primary mirror wings for the space observatory have successfully been deployed, meaning that the space telescope is "structurally fully deployed".
NASA's official James Webb Space Telescope Twitter account states that the Webb team has successfully completed 50 major deployments of the observatory, bringing 20+ years of painstaking work to fruition. So, now that the observatory's structure has been fully deployed, what's next for the Webb team? NASA writes that it will be beginning the three-month process of aligning all of Webb's telescope optics into a "precise system".

Rust has sold 12.4 million copies in the last 8 years
Indie game sensation Rust has now sold over 12.4 million copies on consoles and PC since release, developer Face Punch confirms.
Rust is putting some seriously good numbers. The game has sold over 12.481 million copies on all platforms since originally launching in December 2013, and a staggering 1.111 million copies of DLC have also been purchased by gamers across the globe. These are huge numbers for any indie game and put Rust behind behemoths like Stardew Valley. Other surprising stats include 1.1 billion hours of Twitch streams and 4.2 million hours broadcasted on the platform.
"2021 was an exceptional year for Rust in almost all regards, after 8 years of continuous development Rust has gone from strength to strength. In 2021 Rust blew up on Twitch, we saw record-high player counts, released Voice Props DLC Pack, World revamp, missions, freight trains, underwater labs, gestures, submarines, MLRS and so much more," the developer wrote in a Steam Community update post.

The Order: 1886 PS5 remake possibly in development
The Order: 1886 could be getting some sort of re-release on PlayStation 5, new trademarks indicate.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a new trademark for The Order: 1886, possibly indicating a PS5 remake, remaster, or director's cut could be in the works. The new trademark was filed in December 2021 and is apparently separate from the original February 2015 filing designated for the PS4 release. Like the older filing, this trademark is for "downloadable video game software."
However it's just as likely the trademark was simply filed in order to continue selling the older PS4 game on the PlayStation Network. The trademark's specimen image shows a PS Store listing for The Order: 1886 on PS4. Previous SIE trademarks include God of War Ragnarok, which was recently confirmed as the name of the new GoW sequel, and the Uncharted Legacy of Thieves Collection, which is due out later this month on PlayStation 5.

Halo Infinite cross-core customization could take months of work
Changing Halo Infinite's awkward armor core customization system could take many months of work and is no simple feat.
Before the game's release, 343 Industries was surprisingly transparent about Halo Infinite. Now the studio has stayed mostly quiet as it faces significant backlash from the community. Most of the controversy surrounds Halo Infinite's aggressive monetization system, which is built on a hamstrung progression system that takes freedom away from players to funnel them into piecemeal mTX purchases.
The armor core system is mostly to blame. Unlike previous Halo games, Halo Infinite's armor pieces are restricted to specific cores. Some helmets, shoulder pads, etc are exclusive to specific armor cores. Think of it like Fallout 4's Power Armor; there's a main body unit, or a "core", and various pieces that you can equip to the core frame. The result is a confusing system where gamers are buying and earning cosmetic armor pieces for cores they may not have unlocked or actually want to use.

FromSoftware's new Armored Core game is a sci-fi Dark Souls
Dark Souls designer Hidetaka Miyazaki will apparently lend his unique vision to the Armored Core series.
It looks as if FromSoftware's new Armored Core game is back on track. One ResetERA user claims to have taken a NDA consumer survey that showed screenshots and a snippet of gameplay, including boss fights and world exploration. There's a description that we've transcribed below, but it's worth mentioning the original purported screenshot has a spelling error, and the story also focuses on melange, which is the name of the spice in Dune. This could possibly result in copyright infringement.
The leak describes all the hallmarks of Dark Souls, including hulking bosses, an intriguing story arc with layered lore, and brutal survival combat. FromSoftware is also blending the distinct third-person action combat and customization the Armored Core series is known for, including a staggering array of swappable mech parts and gear.

New KOTOR Remake to have action combat like FF15 and NiOh
The new Knights of the Old Republic remake will reportedly have action-based combat similar to Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Apsyr Media's upcoming KOTOR remake will apparently shed itself of the default turn-based dice-roll combat from the original 2003 game. Instead, the developers are eyeing at a more player-friendly mass-market approach to hack-and-slash Jedi combat and will mimic the upgraded combat systems used in action games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Final Fantasy XV, NiOh, God of War, and Devil May Cry.
The news comes from a recent episode of the Defining Duke podcast. Matty states that KOTOR remake will have action combat with multiple modes, similar to FF7R's active and action modes.

Analyst: Next-gen Switch Pro 4K model coming in 2024, not in 2022
Evidence of a new Switch model capable of native 4K gaming output has been mounting for years now, however gamers may have to wait until 2024 before the console is ready.
Nintendo's next-gen Switch Pro 4K-ready console will release in 2024, not in 2022, analyst firm Ampere Analysis predicts. "I'm not expecting a Switch Pro in 2022. We have a next-gen Nintendo console in our forecasts for late 2024, so I'm not convinced a 'Pro' model is going to appear at all," analyst Piers Harding-Rolls told GamesIndustry.biz.
If Harding-Rolls is accurate, the new Switch could kick off a separate generation and may not be be an extension of the current Switch hardware environment. We've postulated that the new 4K-ready Switch could utilize NVIDIA's new 8nm Orin-based Tegra SoC that's used in its DRIVE autonomous vehicle platform.

Dying Light 2's playthrough time is 10x longer than Breath of the Wild
Dying Light 2 is a massive game that will take up to 500+ hours to completely master.
Techland's new Dying Light 2 Stay Human sequel apparently features a staggering amount of content. Gamers can expect to play for multiple hundreds of hours (yes, really) to fully 100% the post-apocalyptic survival game. There's some real context needed here: Although Dying Light 2's complete rate is about 10x Breath of the Wild story runs, the developers say that simly beating the game will take a lot less time.
"To fully complete Dying Light 2 Stay Human, you'll need at least 500 hours-almost as long as it would take to walk from Warsaw to Madrid," Techland said today.
