Xiaomi is skipping MWC cause they have nothing to show

| Jan 27, 2017 12:41 PM CST

Samsung isn't the only company that won't launch a new smartphone at this year's MWC in Barcelona. Xiaomi has also announced that they too are skipping this event.

The company confirmed the news to TechCrunch stating that they don't have a new device to show. Previous rumors had suggested that the company would launch the Mi 6 at MWC 2017, but that might have been postponed cause of Hugo Barra's departure from Xiaomi.

Xiaomi announced their Mi 5 at last year's MWC, so it was expected that they would announce a new device this year as well.

Gone in 60 seconds: Nokia 6 sells out in 2nd flash sale

| Jan 27, 2017 8:28 AM CST

Earlier this month, HMD unveiled their first Nokia-branded Android smartphone, and the device proved to be an instant hit. In its first flash sale for the Nokia 6, the device sold out in just one minute.

The Nokia 6 second flash sale was even a bigger success since the device sold out in less than a minute. It has also been announced that over 1.4 million registrations were recorded for sale.

The hype around HMD's first Nokia-branded Android smartphone doesn't seem to die down, but I would like to see some numbers. Xiaomi announced that they sold 250,000 units of the Redmi Note 4 in 10 minutes, which is an amazing number. Hopefully, Nokia will give us some numbers soon.

NVIDIA's current Shield updated, supports HDR, and more

| Jan 27, 2017 4:23 AM CST

NVIDIA will be making owners of the current-gen Shield happy with a new firmware update that provides Shield owners with some of the new features of the upcoming refreshed Shield unit.

The new update allows Shield to push out 4K HDR streams from the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime, as well as the nifty new GeForce Now game streaming. In order to use GeForce Now, you'll need to buy the new game controller that'll set you back $60.

NVIDIA has saved current Shield owners $200 with this new firmware, meaning if you want to save the $60 on the new controller because you won't use GeForce Now - then don't. GeForce Now will cost you $25 for 10 hours of gaming, powered by GeForce GTX 1080 graphics cards in the cloud.

Apple's new iPhone being referred to as 'iPhone X'

| Jan 27, 2017 12:36 AM CST

Apple is still over half a year away from unveiling its new iPhone, and now we're beginning to get a clearer picture of what to expect from Apple and its new iPhone - which is being called iPhone 8, iPhone 10, or iPhone X - depending on what you read.

Skipping the iPhone 8... as well as the iPhone 9, would be a strange move - but if the iPhone X is a big of a leap as what we're being teased about, it makes sense. iPhone X could be perfect timing as 2017 is the 10th anniversary of the iPhone - and 10 in roman numerals is... X.

Forbes has an interesting take, talking about the 2018 iPhone... so if we compare iPhone X against the competition and their naming schemes, Samsung has its Galaxy S8 out this year - Apple would be at iPhone 8S next year, while Samsung releases the Galaxy S9. Samsung would get to the Galaxy S10 in 2019, while Apple is stuck on the iPhone 9S.

Google I/O 2017 takes place between May 17-19

| Jan 25, 2017 2:34 AM CST

It looks like Google will be hosting its upcoming Google I/O 2017 event between May 17-19, returning to the Shoreline Amphitheater - at least according to a cryptic puzzle that some people online have purportedly worked out.

TechCrunch reports: "Last year's event at the Shoreline Amphitheatre marked the first time Google held its biggest developer event outdoors and in its own backyard. There were definitely a few growing pains, but Google will hopefully have a new system in place this year to avoid the long lines for both seeing panels and getting food".

What to expect from Google I/O? We don't know yet - but we should expect some exciting things - maybe a tease of a new Pixel smartphone... Android 8.0... and hopefully lots more.

Samsung's Galaxy S8: headphone jack, and a desktop dock

| Jan 24, 2017 9:11 PM CST

As we get closer to the unveiling of the Galaxy S8, we're hearing more positive things about it - like The Guardian reporting that it has new information that seems Samsung keeping the 3.5mm headphone jack on the Galaxy S8, and more.

They add that the Galaxy S8 will have a 3.5mm headphone jack, something they've heard from "multiple sources", and that it does indeed rock that beautiful "all-screen" design that we've been reporting. Inside, we are to expect Qualcomm's powerhouse Snapdragon 835 processor, USB-C connectivity, microSD card support, and more.

Samsung is expected to launch a new Gear VR headset and Gear 360 alongside the Galaxy S8, but it's the new "DeX" desktop dock that has me interested. This purported DeX desktop dock would turn your Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone into an Android-powered desktop PC. It has been attempted before, but if Samsung can do it right, it could be a game changer for some users.

Huawei P10 to have the highest pricing in the series

| Jan 24, 2017 10:33 AM CST

Huawei's P10 should arrive this spring, and there is a possibility that the company will announce their newest phone at this year's MWC in Barcelona.

There have been numerous leaks about the phone, so I will repeat once again what is expected: Huawei's Kirin 960 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, curved screen, and dual camera carrying the Leica brand.

The newest leak doesn't concern the specs of the phone, rather its pricing. According to the leaker Ricciolo, who was right on many occasions in the past, the Huawei P10 will be the most expensive device in this series. Although no numbers were mentioned, this means that the P10 will cost more than $640 which is the price of the base P9 model with 32GB of storage.

A new Honor device has been discovered on the TENAA website, the Chinese regulatory commission. According to the specs of the device, this could be the Honor 8 successor.

The device that goes by model number DUK-TL30 has an octa-core processor, although there is no mention if it's Kirin 960. The DUK-TL30 also has 6GB or RAM and 128GB of internal storage expandable with a microSD card.

Nokia hints at Snapdragon 835 powered smartphone

| Jan 24, 2017 7:22 AM CST

Earlier this month, HMD unveiled their first Nokia-branded Android smartphone, and the device proved to be an instant hit. In the first flash sale for the Nokia 6, the device sold out in just one minute.

And while many are thrilled that the Nokia is back on the market, there are a couple of problems. First, the Nokia 6 is available only in China, and second - the device isn't competitive with the top tier phones since it features Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor.

However, this is just the first Nokia-branded Android smartphone from HMD Global, and we can expect more to come.

Samsung has most of Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 835 chips

| Jan 24, 2017 1:42 AM CST

Samsung is reportedly securing most of Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 835 processors for its upcoming Galaxy S8 smartphone, according to sources of Forbes.

Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 835 processor has some industry leading features and technology, including 1Gbps speeds over LTE - and so much more. Samsung has worked closely with Qualcomm over the years, but the use of the Snapdragon 810 and its overheating issues had Samsung shift to using its own Exynos processors in some of its Galaxy handsets. The Galaxy S8 is shaping up beautifully in leaked videos of the handset, with what's sure to be the best smartphone display yet.

Samsung is working even closer with Qualcomm in regards to using their next-gen Snapdragon 835 processor in its upcoming Galaxy S8 smartphone, which is sure to be one of the best selling smartphones of 2017. According to Forbes' sources "Samsung has first dibs" on Snapdragon 835 processors for its new phone.

LG's new G6 smartphone looks freakin' beautiful

| Jan 23, 2017 11:53 PM CST

We've had a little tease of LG's upcoming G6 smartphone, but now The Verge is here with a full reveal ahead of LG's official announcement on February 26 during Mobile World Congress 2017.

LG's new G6 smartphone will rock a large 5.7-inch display with a 2:1 aspect ratio, with the company wanting as little bezel as possible. The G6 rocks a screen-to-bezel ratio of 90%, which will make the G6's screen take up most of the front - and so it should.

The company has however moved away from its modular design in the G5, with the new G6 built entirely from glass and metal. LG will be including a 3.5mm headphone jack on the G6, which will make people happy - but there'll be waterproof goodness included, but unfortunately - the battery is not replaceable. Boo.

Samsung's Note line isn't dead: Note 8 is coming

| Jan 23, 2017 1:12 PM CST

At IFA Berlin in 2011, Samsung announced the original Galaxy Note, the first smartphone from the Note line. Since then, Samsung has introduced at least one Note device a year with the latest being the Note7.

After the Note7 fiasco, there were speculations of what will happen with the Note line and whether Samsung will discontinue it which would be a shame since the Note7 was a wonderful phone (apart from the exploding batteries).

Now, we finally know for sure that the Note isn't dead and we will be seeing the Galaxy Note 8 later this year. The news was confirmed by DJ Koh, Samsung's Mobile Chief, who said in an interview that the company would keep working on the Note-series smartphones.

While the dates for its release haven't been confirmed yet, Xiaomi's marketing director Zang Zhiyuan has revealed that the launch will happen very soon. The rumors say that we could see the white Mi MIX in February.
