LG is promising that its consumers will be safe from any issues of overheating, with LG Mobile Communication Division boss, Lee Seok-jong saying that LG has used a unique mechanism that uses heat pipes in the LG G6 that will make sure that heat is shifted through the phone efficiently, and will avoid any overheating problems.

Seok-jong said: "We will significantly improve the safety and quality of our new flagship smartphones as more consumers seek safe smartphones", while another LG official said: "We are conducting battery heat exposure tests to a temperature 15 percent higher than the temperature set by the international standards of the US and Europe. The source of the rumor if WCCFTech adds that the $849 price will push the Galaxy S8 "out of the normal consumer's reach", yet that's the current rate - and sometimes considerably more for the highest storage on previous Galaxy/Note smartphones, and the iPhone.

Samsung's inquiry blames batteries for the Note7 fiasco?

| Jan 16, 2017 5:40 PM CST

Samsung's fiasco with the Note7 still hasn't been forgotten, and the company wants to put the entire case behind them before the official announcement of the Galaxy S8 planned for April.

In order to get a fresh start, the company has yet to unveil the results of the investigation concerning the Note7 devices catching fire. Samsung should announce the official results of the investigation in a week, just a day before unveiling their fourth-quarter earnings results, but a source close to the case has confirmed that the cause of the exploding Note7 devices is the batteries, as suspected.

Samsung's Note7, announced in August, was initially recalled in September and the company replaced the devices with new ones which contained batteries from a different supplier. However, those devices proved to be unsafe as well, and the Korean giant had no other option but to end the production of the Galaxy Note7.

Microsoft patents foldable smartphone

| Jan 16, 2017 2:31 PM CST

Foldable phones are coming: LG will roll out flexible OLED panels to use in its next-generation phones, and Samsung will follow suit with its own foldable phone. Now it looks like Microsoft wants in on the action: Redmond has filed a patent for a very unique transforming foldable mobile device.

Microsoft patents foldable smartphone

We've seen Microsoft's Surface lineup meld ultrabooks and desktops with the Surface Book, and now it looks like the company will use flexible displays to make a mobile phone that transforms into a tablet. The company has filed a patent for a very specific foldable phone that can essentially swap between a tablet and a phone at will.

According to the patents, the device can fold in half longways like a piece of paper via a special hinge on the underside. It's two halves can be laid flat to make a larger display to simulate a tablet mode, and then fold in half to simulate a mobile phone. The patent also shows a three-sided triangular form factor which uses three displays, hinting Microsoft has a ton of different ideas about this technology.

Samsung Galaxy S8 will have a headphone jack after all?

| Jan 16, 2017 10:36 AM CST

Samsung will reportedly launch their flagship in April, but there are already many rumors and leaks suggesting what should we expect from the Galaxy S8.

The newest leak shows a beautiful edge-to-edge display and no physical buttons on the device which could mean that Samsung has removed the physical home button and flanking touch buttons, pushing the fingerprint sensor into the display itself.

There were also rumors that Samsung plans to remove the headphone jack. However, the newest rumors from Sammobile and Android Police suggest that Samsung might stick with the headphone jack after all. That decision shouldn't surprise anyone since the users reacted pretty strongly when Apple removed the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 and this feature is one of the advantages of the Korean company.

Samsung's new Galaxy S8 looks amazing in leaked videos

| Jan 15, 2017 4:26 PM CST

Samsung is months away from launching its new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 edge smartphones, and we're finally seeing some leaks that seem to indicate that the South Korean electronics giant is really pushing towards the edges of the ultimate flagship smartphone.

The new Galaxy S8 looks to feature a beautiful edge-to-edge display that is sure to be the best display ever on a smartphone when Samsung releases its new handsets, with renders of the phone showing we have next to no bezel, and no physical buttons. Yes, that means that Samsung has possibly removed the physical home button and flanking touch buttons, pushing the fingerprint sensor into the display itself.

In the new video for the latest display from Samsung, we're looking at 100% color gamut coverage, and compared to a traditional non-AMOLED display - the results are striking. OLED technology also allows for a much thinner display, thanks to layers of LCD technology that aren't required courtesy of the OLED tech.

Apple's new iPhone teased, no bezel, translucent phone

| Jan 15, 2017 4:20 AM CST

We've been hearing some big things about Apple's new iPhone, but now there's been a new patent that was picked up by Apple Insider which sees Apple attempting to build a phone that slaps a bunch of OLEDs on a flexible surface, with small gaps between them.

Apple's new iPhone teased, no bezel, translucent phone

These gaps could be quite useful, as they would let information be transmitted through to a light sensor, or camera that could be placed under the screen - better yet, they could allow for speakers, notification lights, or even a second screen underneath the first display. They could even let a window form that would let you look directly through the phone and into another object, while information is displayed on the screen - something we've heard before.

If Apple were able to push the boundaries this much, it really would be a big deal when it announces the iPhone 8 later this year. We've previously heard that the new iPhone would be a "clear piece of glass" with AI built in, according to nerd mega star Robert Scoble, and it looks like he could be right - which excites me, greatly.

Our first look at Samsung's next-gen Galaxy S8 handset

| Jan 13, 2017 11:40 PM CST

Samsung is preparing for the big launch of its new Galaxy S8 smartphone, something that has been teased with renders - and now, BGR is hearing that the renders are based on information from a source within the factories that are manufacturing Samsung's new Galaxy S8.

Our first look at Samsung's next-gen Galaxy S8 handset

We should expect a Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 edge with some of the things that made the Note 7 an explosive hit, but the curved Galaxy S8 edge is doing some strange things to me - I can feel my wallet getting closer to my hands. It's looking damn beautiful with the entire front of the phone covered in the gigantic display, with some Samsung branding at the bottom - no physical home button here, guys.

The back looks like the previous Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, with a lack of fingerprint sensor - which has me worried. I'm hoping we see Samsung leap forward and embed the fingerprint scanner into the display, which would be next-freakin-gen. We should expect Samsung to unveil the new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 edge sometime towards the end of February, or early March - with a release in April.

LG and Samsung to introduce foldable phones

| Jan 12, 2017 11:29 AM CST

According to an article from the Korea Herald, both Samsung and LG are expected to manufacture devices that can fold between being a phone and a tablet.

Samsung is expected to make approximately 100,000 of these tablets when they launch in the third quarter of the year and LG is expected to make approximately the same amount.

The reason for such low numbers is likely due to the difficulty of producing these devices and displays capable of folding. Other manufacturers have teased such concepts in the past, such as Lenovo at their Lenovo World Conference last year. However, the report also indicates that their plans are not final yet and we may still have to wait some time until they become real.
