Canadian musician Neil Young calls Apple MacBook Pro 'a piece of crap'

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 28, 2020 8:27 PM CST

Canadian musician Neil Young is about to never receive another music contract, ever -- as he called Apple's MacBook Pro a "piece of crap" during a recent interview with The Verge.

Canadian musician Neil Young calls Apple MacBook Pro 'a piece of crap'

Young did NOT have anything good to say about the MacBook Pro, telling The Verge: "It's a piece of crap. Are you kidding? That's Fisher-Price quality. That's like Captain Kangaroo, your new engineer. A MacBook Pro? What are you talking about? You can't get anything out of that thing".

The main criticisms with the MacBook Pro comes from the fact Apple say they have the "best speakers" in a notebook, but Young doesn't think so. He continued: "The only way you can get it out is if you put it in. And if you put it in, you can't get it out because the DAC is no good in the MacBook Pro. So you have to use an external DAC and do a bunch of stuff to make up for the problems that the MacBook Pro has because they're not aimed at quality. They're aimed at consumerism".

Alienware's new dual-screen laptop takes cues from the 3DS

Derek Strickland | Jan 8, 2020 5:33 PM CST

CES 2020 - Alienware demos its new innovative dual-screen laptop that's all screen and no keyboard.

Alienware's new dual-screen laptop takes cues from the 3DS

Alienware's new experimental Concept Duet laptop doesn't have a keyboard or any buttons. It's basically two 13-inch screens that fold together via a clamshell clamp that're both fully integrated in an Intel-powered Windows 10 platform. The screens are full touchscreen panels with pen support similar to a souped-up, high-powered Nintendo 3DS, and the device can be folded vertically like a book, horizontally like a traditional laptop, and can also use one screen as a kickstand for tabletop use (or folded into a tablet for single-screen use).

Dell's main use case for Duet Concept is for productivity and content creation like digital art. It looks pretty convenient for anyone who needs to bring their touch-oriented work with them on-the-go, and the demo showed a Skype call on one screen and a note-taking app on the bottom. Thankfully the Duet has a special magnetic keyboard that attaches to the bottom screen so you type more efficiently.

MSI's new Creator 17 is the 'world's very first' Mini LED laptop

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 8, 2020 6:23 AM CST

CES 2020 - MSI unveiled its new Creator 17 laptop at CES 2020, touting that it was the "world's very first" laptop with a nifty Mini LED display.

MSI's new Creator 17 is the 'world's very first' Mini LED laptop

Mini LEDs are much smaller traditional LEDs that are used as a backlight in displays, with MSI's new Creator 17 rocking a huge 17-inch 4K panel. The 17-inch panel can dim and brighten with more accuracy than a traditional LCD and LED backlight, with Mini LEDs being super-small down to less than 2mm.

MSI says that the Creator 17 panel can display 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, reach up to 1000 nits of brightness (great for HDR content), and speaking of HDR content we should expect stellar HDR abilities thanks to the high levels of contrast bet ween light and dark areas of images and video on the Mini LED display.

Intel's new Horseshoe Bend: a gigantic 17-inch foldable laptop concept

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 7, 2020 11:31 PM CST

CES 2020 - Intel had something very interesting to show off at CES 2020 this year, with its new codename Horseshoe Bend -- a gigantic 17-inch tablet with a foldable display.

Intel's new Horseshoe Bend: a gigantic 17-inch foldable laptop concept

The large 17-inch foldable tablet acts like no other device before it, as it can act as multiple products -- it can be a laptop with a wireless or Bluetooth keyboard. You can fold it into a 12-inch laptop with the option of a wireless keyboard, plug-in keyboard, or even a magnetic keyboard that connects to the bottom of the Horseshoe Bend.

But when you're not inputting data into it, you can unfold the Horseshoe Bend into a much larger 17-inch display. This would be great in certain scenarios, but in its current form I can't see this being terribly popular. I get that it's just a concept, but I need to see more meat on the foldable laptop bone before I'm convinced, and that's coming from an owner of Samsung's Galaxy Fold smartphone.

Razer Sila 5G home router revealed at CES 2020

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 7, 2020 11:00 PM CST

CES 2020 - Razer first launched its wireless mesh gaming router towards the end of 2018, a gaming router called Sila, but now there's a new one and it packs 5G connectivity.

Razer Sila 5G home router revealed at CES 2020

The new Razer Sila 5G Home Router concept was shown off at CES 2020, and with it brings some changes -- it's now a 5G-based home mesh router, as well as a mobile 5G hotspot. Razer taps its built-in FasTrack engine, a technology that dynamically optimizes network prioritization so that it keeps latency ultra-low and bandwidth high for gaming.

Razer Sila 5G is smart in the way that it can tell the difference between a gaming PC and a console, and it has the ability to lock a certain amount of bandwidth for online gaming. This is good if you've got multiple people throughout the house on varying devices like consoles, PCs, notebooks, tablets and smartphones -- and want to guarantee a certain amount of bandwidth to a particular PC or device. You can control a bunch of these settings from Razer's own mobile app, too.

Lenovo's new ThinkPad X1 Fold: foldable laptop starts at $2499

Lenovo's new ThinkPad X1 Fold has been in development for over 4 years now, with the company churning out no less than 6 different designs before it landed on the consumer version unveiled at CES 2020. It was co-engineered with Intel, will have 5G connectivity, weighs less than 2.2 pounds, has a Bluetooth Mini Fold keyboard included, and folds flat to a 13.3-inch display.
