Judge orders Amazon and Craigslist to reveal info on phony reviewers

Ubervita, the company that manufactures testosterone boosters, weight loss supplements and other body enhancement pills filed a case claiming that many phony negative reviews were posted on Amazon to disrupt its sales of products.

A federal judge ruled in the company's favour, giving them the right to issue a subpoena Amazon and even Craiglist of cough up the details of those reviews who allegedly posting fake negative reviews.

What ruled in Ubervita's favor is that ads were found in Craiglist which offered cash to post negative reviews about Ubervita products by posing as a dissatisfied customer. Ubervita said that it is necessary to get access of this information to catch those who are running a 'campaign' against Ubervita and place them under a disadvantage. U.S. District judge Marsha Pechman said that Amazon and Craiglist must reveal information such as names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, IP addresses and even credit card details and bank account information.

User's data can be extracted from smartphones post factory reset

If you think that using the factory reset function on your smartphone will clear your data, you're in for a pleasant surprise! Czech-based security company Avast purchased several phones via eBay to evaluate if they can extract data from it, especially the ones that had a factory reset done by the previous owner.

The factory reset is supposed to be a one-touch feature which should secure erase all the data, settings and other user-related details from the photo and return it to a 'rolled out of the factory' state. But the experiment by Avast proved that this is not entirely true.

The company conducted this experiment by purchasing 20 smartphones from eBay. The experts at Avast were able to extract data from these smartphones, though the company didn't disclose if that was the case with all the smartphones. The experts were able to extract 40,000 photos, out of which 1,500 of those were family photos and others included selfies with their manhood.Other data included emails, text messages, Google search history and even browser history. Avast also added that the factory reset feature does not wipe out the data from the phone. Rather, it only erases the index information.

Technology largely unable to protect civilians from IED attacks

The use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) against military targets proves to be successful, killing thousands of U.S. and coalition troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, the civilian death toll is staggering, with IED and suicide bomber attacks boosting casualty rates among civilians 70 percent over the past three years, a report recently noted.

Unfortunately, there are very few technology-based solutions to defend civilians against IEDs, with bomb devices ranging from crude homemade IEDs to explosive devices useing military-grade supplies. As successfully demonstrated during the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, a homemade pressure cooker IED with a mix of gunpowder, ball bearings and nails can be lethal - there was a final death toll of three people, injuring 264 athletes and spectators.

U.S. military personnel are relying more on armored vehicles, creating next-generation bomb detectors, and using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to conduct reconnaissance missions. The growing bloodshed in Iraq, however, will be difficult for local police officers and undertrained military personnel reduce civilian deaths. A massive 81 percent of 60,000 deaths recorded from 2011 to 2013 were civilians, and hit 66 countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, Somalia, and Thailand.

Vending machines evolving, going high-tech with better products

Vending machines in the United States are evolving because of advanced technology and more affordable development prices. Instead of just selling cheap candy and soda, many vending machines now offer everything from beauty products to electronics, or higher quality food.

Denis Koci's Burritobox, selling hot burritos to visitors via his Box Brands companies, recently rolled out six more machines - featuring hand-rolled burritos which can be customized with sour cream, guacamole, and other choices. The company also has interest in Pizzaboxes and other niche food vending machines which can be in shopping malls, near parks, and other locations with high foot traffic.

"There is a lot of innovation happening in vending machines," said Omar Khedr, IBISWorld industry research analyst, in a statement. "It's occurring in niche markets like organic foods, propelled forward by access to new technology and convenience."

DARPA researching self-guided .50-caliber ammo rounds

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently tested a .50-caliber self-guided bullet that pairs a maneuverable round with a custom optical guidance system. The Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordinance (EXACTO) round is designed to help snipers be even more effective, and provides a bigger standoff range.

The U.S. military hopes a self-guided round will make it easier to eliminate targets with a single shot - helping keep snipers hidden. Specifically, the guidance system will prove helpful in Afghanistan and other environments where there are high winds, dusty terrain, and sometimes harsh shooting conditions.

"This video shows EXACTO rounds maneuvering in flight to hit targets that are offset from where the sniper rifle is aimed," according to DARPA. "EXACTO's specifically designed ammunition and real-time optical guidance system help track and direct projectiles to their targets by compensating for weather, wind, target movement and other factors that could impede successful hits."

PDXLAN 24 Coverage - One hell of a LAN party

PDXLAN 24 - TweakTown is on the ground in Portland, OR, for PDXLAN, one of the largest LAN parties on the west coast. A little background: PDXLAN started back when CRTs were still in vogue and the whole LAN was run off of a 1.5 DSL connection. Since then, the LAN has grown in size, and they have added more and more events throughout the year. PDXLAN 24 is currently taking place and runs from 6pm on July 11 to 6pm on July 14. We've been taking video during the event, but my MacBook Air isn't the most capable video editing machine, so video will be coming later this weekend.

We're going to take you through the start of the event until around midnight using pictures as pictures are worth a thousand words. So, with that introduction out of the way, let's get on to the fun stuff.

The LAN takes place in the Holiday Inn convention center next to Portland's airport (PDX), hence the name PDXLAN. As you can see, the LAN has yet to open to the general public, but setup has already been completed. Shortly, this cavernous room will be filled with heat-producing PCs and gamers hungry to frag and win prizes.

Panasonic rebrands OCZ SSD drives, enters the flash storage market

It looks like Panasonic is now a player in the SSD market, without much fanfare to be honest. The company looks to be re-branding OCZ drives, using OCZ's Indilinx Barefoot M10 controller.

The Panasonic-branded, OCZ-made drives were spotted in the famous Akihabara shopping district, with the new Panasonic Premium range of SSDs. These new SSDs come in retail packaging, including software and adapters to get them installed into desktop PCs. Panasonic is making its Premium SSDs available in three sizes: 120GB, 240GB and 480GB.

The new drives are based on OCZ's Indilinx Barefoot M10 controller, and should be using Toshiba's second-generation 19nm MLC NAND flash. These new drives are based on the SATA 6Gbps interface, with the performance side of things looking to match what OCZ has with its Vertex 460 SSDs.

Hubble telescope detects mysterious deficit of light in the Universe

The Universe as we know it is a lot darker than it should be, according to the latest readings from the Hubble Space Telescope.

A new examination has revealed that ultraviolet light is mysteriously missing from the nearest known parts of the Universe. UV rays are largely invisible to us mortals because their wavelengths come up short of visible light, however, with high frequencies they can be visible in devices like ultraviolet lamps. Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder's Center for Astrophysics and Space Astronomy says that UV light can travel at great distances across the Universe, and most of it adds up. But closer to home there's a deficit that is tough to explain, leading researchers to question just what's happening to ionizing photons.

"If we count up the known sources of ultraviolet ionizing photons, we come up five times too short," said Benjamin Oppenheimer, one of the researchers. "We are missing 80 percent of the ionizing photons, and the question is where are they coming from? The most fascinating possibility is that an exotic new source, not quasars or galaxies, is responsible for the missing photons."

Google legal chief shines light on EU right to be forgotten delistings

The controversial "right to be forgotten" ruling in Europe has seen Google censor news articles and remove search results - and now the company has shed some light on the process itself.

Google's chief legal officer, David Drummond, penned a statement, published in the Guardian, in which he put forward the company's case. "When it comes to determining what's in the public interest, we're taking into account a number of factors," Drummond wrote. "These include whether the information relates to a politician, celebrity or other public figure; if the material comes from a reputable news source, and how recent it is; whether it involves political speech; questions of professional conduct that might be relevant to consumers; the involvement of criminal convictions that are not yet "spent"; and if the information is being published by a government. But these will always be difficult and debatable judgments."

That Google is having to decide the validity of each request on a case by case basis is testament to its power - delisting results is at the company's discretion. Of course, Google is not able to remove articles or websites from the internet, but as by far the largest search engine on the planet, taking down searches tends to considerably reduce the access to such pages. But Drummond asserted that adapting to the European ruling will be part of a learning curve. "Only two months in our process is still very much a work in progress," Drummond wrote. "It's why we incorrectly removed links to some articles last week (they've since been reinstated). But the good news is that the ongoing, active debate that's happening will inform the development of our principles, policies and practices."

NVIDIA rumored to be preparing the GeForce GTX TITAN II for early 2015

It looks like NVIDIA isn't going to sit on its hands when it comes to the GTX TITAN, with the GPU maker reportedly working on a GM200-based GTX TITAN II. This new GPU will arrive as soon as early 2015.

According to German tech site 3DCenter.org, specifications of some new GPUs are also here with us, above. We can see the GM200 and GM204 GPUs will reportedly be built on the 28nm process. We heard a couple of days ago that NVIDIA would skip the 20nm process, moving onto the 16nm process, but nothing is in concrete right now.

The GM200 however, will feature over 4,000 CUDA cores, and should come with a much wider, and much anticipated 512-bit memory bus. If we expect it to be baked onto the 28nm process, this is going to be one gigantic, titan of a GPU. NVIDIA is going to have to leverage the energy efficiency of its Maxwell architecture in order to keep the thermals under control. We should expect the GM200-based GTX TITAN II to launch early next year.

Half-Life 3 hits Kickstarter, developer removes it soon after

Christopher Butler has taken to Kickstarter to fund his own version of Half-Life 3, as "Valve seems set on not re-creating a Half-Life 3" but then he adds that he and his fellow developers are "looking to steal the market for this ourselves".

Butler was asking for just $2500 or so for the development of the game, as he has "a small team of 6 people including myself". Butler said on the Kickstarter page for Half-Life 3 that "we all have our own funds in order to keep ourselves paid for the duration of the project, the main ask for pledges is literally just to keep up to date with the latest software and maintenance in a project such as this".

Butler claimed to have worked for both EA and Valve in the last ten years, admitting that he hadn't approached Valve about making the game. He added that he hoped to have a playable alpha build of the game for backers to play within 10 months. Butler was quick to pull the project from Kickstarter, with it now all but gone.

IBM spends $3 billion on new R&D, will step away from using silicon

IBM thinks that the days of silicon are numbered, as it spends $3 billion over the next five years on finding ways to create the future generations of microprocessors. Senior VP of IBM Systems & Technology Group, Tom Rosamilia, says: "We really do see the clock ticking on silicon".

Right now, IBM's very latest silicon components are baked onto a 22nm process, but the company is looking five years into the future where parts will become so small that it will be hard to maintain a reliable on and off state. Rosamilia adds: "As we get into the 7 nanometer timeframe, things really begin to taper off".

This has IBM looking at new ways of making components work, funding this new set of research. The company has faith in an alternative to silicon, something known as carbon nanotubes. The concept of this technology still needs considerable work if it hopes to see the fabrication of carbon nanotube-based processors as an alternative to silicon. Another route that IBM could go into is silicon nanophotonics, which uses light instead of electrical signals to blast data around the chip.

Glenn Greenwald says there is a second NSA whisleblower

It looks like Edward Snowden might not be the only NSA whistleblower according to Glenn Greenwald, with the tease coming from Greenwald who tweeted over the weekend that the fact of a second US whistleblower "seems clear at this point".

Greenwald believes there is a second US whistleblower that is leaking information about the NSA to media around the world. Greenwald added: "The lack of sourcing to Snowden on this & that last article seems petty telling". The tweet was made after a German site published an analysis of the NSA's XKEYSCORE code, which doesn't seem to have some from Snowden.

It was only after this that speculation of a second US whistleblower began, with experts agreeing that it looks like Snowden isn't alone. ARD, a German public broadcaster, said in a report last week that the NSA is using its XKEYSCORE program to track Internet users who search the web on how to stay hidden when on the Internet. Greenwald added: "I've long thought one of the most significant and enduring consequences of Snowden's successful whistleblowing will be that he will inspire other leakers to come forward".

Microsoft hiring industrial designer for a new, next-gen Xbox

Microsoft hasn't even had its Xbox One on the market for over 12 months yet, but that shouldn't stop you from thinking the company isn't thinking ahead for its true, proper next-gen console. The company is looking for a new Industrial Designer for its Xbox team.

The company has posted an ad looking for a new Industrial Designer, with their responsibility being: "The Xbox Industrial Design studio is building a world class in house team. We love entertainment. We live for building transformative entertainment experiences that resonate with consumers. We are looking for passionate designers who want to help us create next generation entertainment hardware for Microsoft".

I think we're going to see a new console from Microsoft much quicker than previously thought, something I hope replaces the Xbox One as a proper next-gen console capable of at a bare minimum, 4K at 60FPS. This will pave the way for Microsoft to allow VR headsets like the Oculus Rift to work with it, as VR requires serious horsepower. The Xbox One has seen most of its games rendered at 720p, with most of the frame rates on 'next-gen' games locked at, or around 30FPS. This isn't really any better than the Xbox 360, and if the Xbox One is going to be here for another five years or so, it's simply not good enough.

Germany boots CIA spy from country because of NSA-related spying

The German government remains upset that the NSA snooped on German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other government leaders, requesting the top U.S. intelligence official in Germany to leave the country. It was an unexpected move by the German government, as the CIA official works at the U.S. embassy in Berlin - as parliamentary inquiries continue in Germany.

The German government wants to speak with Snowden, but the American turned down an in-person meeting that would have taken place in Russia. Even if German investigators are unable to chat with Snowden in the near future, there are obvious political tensions between Germany and the United States at the moment.

"The representative of the U.S. intelligence services as the Embassy of the United States of America has been requested to leave Germany," said Steffen Seibert, a Germany government spokesperson, in a statement. "The Federal Government takes these incidents very seriously. It remains vital for Germany, in the interest of the security of its citizens and its forces abroad, to cooperate closely and trustfully with western partners, in particular with the USA. To do so, however, mutual trust and openness are necessary. The Federal Government continues to be ready for this and expects the same from its closest partners."

Harley Davidson recalls motorcycles for front wheel lockup issue

Automakers like GM and Ford have been recalling thousands and thousands of vehicles around the world for issues that pose a safety hazard to drivers. Motorcycle maker Harley Davidson has now issued a recall on certain motorcycles in the 2014 model year.

The recall covers 66,421 Touring and CVO Touring motorcycles that have anti-lock brakes. Harley is warning riders of these bikes that the front wheel can lock up without warning. The issue has caused five known accidents with two minor injuries reported.

The front wheel lockup happens when the brake line is pinched between the fuel tank and frame. That pinch increases the pressure of fluid in the lines and locks up the front wheel. The fix Harley will offer is to replace brake lines and add straps to hold the lines in place.

Uber driver allegedly flees authorities with three passengers onboard

A man named Ryan W Simonetti and two of his coworkers were in Washington DC recently where they hailed an Uber ride via the app. When the trio walked up to the Uber car, they noticed a DC Taxi inspector talking to the driver of the Uber car. As the inspector walked off, Simonetti says the Uber driver just drove off.

The inspector turned on his lights and started to follow the Uber car according to Simonetti. The passenger told the driver the cop was following him and the Uber driver allegedly responded, "He's not a real cop." The driver then ran a red light and proceeded to drive above the speed limit. Simonetti said it was like an episode of cops.

The driver allegedly told the passengers he couldn't stop and let them out because he would get a $2,000 fine. "It was insane," Simonetti said. "I physically tried to force his leg to hit the brake. I ripped off his pant leg ... I said, 'Here's two options. You take this exit, or I'm going to knock the side of your head in. If we crash, we crash, but you're gonna kill us anyway.'" The driver eventually let them out of the car and continued to flee authorities. The matter is under investigation by law enforcement and Uber.

Bell Labs achieves over 10Gbps using traditional copper phone lines

Bell LAbs, which is a division of Alcatel-Lucent, is claiming to have "set a new broadband speed record of 10Gbps using traditional copper telephone lines". This was achieved in a research project that could see gigabit broadband speeds delivered to normal broadband networks with copper, by combining fiber.

These 10Gbps speeds can only be achieved at 30 meters (or 100 feet), and at 70m (or 230 feet) the top speeds drop to 1Gbps. Alcatel-Lucent has said that bidirectional 1Gbps speeds can be achieved in the real-world over networks that deliver fiber to the curbside, and rely on copper for the final few feet of the connection.

Alcatel-Lucent said: "When it becomes commercially available in 2015, G.fast will use a frequency range for data transmission of 106MHz, giving broadband speeds up to 500Mbps over a distance of 100 meters. In contrast, XG-FAST uses an increased frequency range up to 500MHz to achieve higher speeds but over shorter distances. Bell Labs achieved 1Gbps symmetrical over 70 meters on a single copper pair. 10Gbps was achieved over a distance of 30 meters by using two pairs of lines (a technique known as 'bonding'). Both tests used standard copper cable provided by a European operator".

TSMC invests heavily into 10nm process, wants to fight off Samsung

TSMC is reportedly increasing the development of its upcoming 10nm process so that it can better prepare itself against Samsung, which has reportedly received an order from Qualcomm to build 14nm FinFET chips, reports DigiTimes.

DigiTimes writes: "TSMC and Samsung are currently competing fiercely in the development of FinFET process, with the Korea-based foundry house utilizing a 14nm process and TSMC a 16nm node. Both the 14nm and 16nm processes are scheduled to enter volume production in early 2015". TSMC has been at the forefront of FinFET development, with plans to begin producing 16nm FinFET chips in Q4 2014.

DigiTimes' sources have said that TSMC has rescheduled its commercial production for the 16nm FinFET process, pushing forward with the more advanced 16nm FinFET Plus process. This process will consume less power, and shrink die sizes even more. TSMC is running scared at the moment, as it didn't anticipate Samsung to develop its 14nm process so quickly, so now the Taiwanese company is accelerating its development of the 10nm process, to continue staying out ahead of its competitors.

Chinese couple sells their kids to buy in-game weapons and armor

A young Chinese couple has sold their two sons to child traffickers, all so they could fund their gaming habits. The couple sold their two sons on two separate occasions, to fund the purchase of in-game items such as armor, and weapons.

During an interview with Guangdong TV from a local detention center, the couple said that their first child wasn't planned. The father, A Hui, said that he had no intention of financially supporting the child, so they sold him to Fujian-based child traffickers. His partner, A Mei, fell pregnant again, where he explained: "[A Hui] likes buying items in online games, and he likes staying out all night at internet cafes".

This meant that most of their finances were being funneled into A Hui's gaming life, so it meant the second child couldn't be supported. They then sold him to traffickers. The traffickers in China sell children to couples who want to be parents, street gangs and street peddlers, and even to orphanages where they put them up for adoption overseas. A Hui's father was aware of what was going on, and in the end reported the couple to the police. The two were arrested, and are now awaiting trial and sentencing for the crime of selling children.
