NASA's new James Webb Space Telescope has pointed its highly advanced instruments at the largest planet and king of our solar system - Jupiter.

Webb has captured new images of the giant planet that have given researchers more clues to explore about Jupiter's existence until now and its evolution into the future. The two new images were captured using Webb's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). NASA explains that since infrared light is invisible to the human eye, the gathered data from Webb's instrument was translated onto the visible light spectrum, and the result is the above and below images.

Citizen scientist Judy Schmidt successfully translated the Webb data into gorgeous images, including a composite image of Jupiter in three light filters - F360M (red), F212N (yellow-green), and F150W2 (cyan). The above image of Jupiter shows auroras stretching to the high altitudes of the planet, with aurora activity seen at both the north and south poles.

Congress implies UFOs aren't from Earth, focus shifts to alien origins

A new opinion piece written in The Hill by Marik Von Rennenkampf outlines the new definition Congress has taken on UFOs, or as officials would like them to be referred to, Unidentified Aerial Phenomena or UAP.

That naming has since been updated with Congress now revising the definition of a UFO to include "transmedium" objects, which means objects that are capable of transitioning "between space and the atmosphere, or between the atmosphere and bodies of water".

In a previous Congress report, a nation-security-focused committee pointed out a growing number of objects demonstrating technology that allowed them to seamlessly travel between space, air, and water, with the report noting "transmedium threats to United States national security are expanding exponentially."

A study on the Tonga volcano explosion titled "Energetic output of the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption from pressure measurements" has been published in the journal Shock Waves.

Researchers from the University of Sheffield have compiled a new dataset relating to the Hunga Tonga underwater volcano eruption on January 15th, 2022, comprising data from weather stations across the globe and social media. The dataset was compared against historical data of the most powerful human-made explosion ever, produced by the Tsar Bomba nuclear bomb, showing the eruption released even more energy than the bomb.

The eruption generated acoustic-gravity waves that were detected at the edge of space by satellites and various instruments worldwide. Weather stations across the planet detected a passing Lamb wave, a type of acoustic-gravity wave, that resulted in local atmospheric pressure spiking before dropping over about 45 minutes, compared to the effect earthquakes have, which typically last between a few seconds and a few minutes.

A Tesla fan has put his vehicle to the test by placing mannequins in the middle of the road to test Tesla's Full Self-Driving feature. The video was in response to a viral video that depicted Tesla vehicles failing to stop for child mannequins when traveling at high speeds, which sparked Tesla fans to perform the test for themselves and, in Whole Mars Blog's case, on live children. The test was conducted with Tad Park, the CEO of EV investment company Volt Equity, and his children.

The video of the test seemingly debunking the original viral video of the Tesla's traveling at high speeds was removed by YouTube, with BusinessInsider reporting that a YouTube spokesperson informed that the video violated YouTube's guidelines as the content was related to endangering minors. Park spoke to Insider and said that CNBC's report on the video put pressure on YouTube, which caused them to remove it.

Famously space is believed to be silent but that isn't always the case as NASA has "listened" to a black hole.

NASA took to its social channels on Monday to share a common misconception about space, and that is most people believe there is no sound at all since its a vacuum, which means there is no way for sound to travel. However, this isn't the case for galaxy clusters, as NASA writes that there is so much gas within some galaxies clusters that researchers are able to create a sonification. Notably, the audio clip was posted back in May, but the re-sharing has caused sparked virality with many people commenting on NASA's posts.

As explained in NASA's May release, there is a black hoel located at the center of the Perseus galaxy cluster, and astronomers discovered that pressure waves created by the black hole ripple through the galaxy's hot gas. Notably, researchers were able to translate these pressure waves into notes that humans are able to hear. The results have been interpreted as somewhat eerie and the created sound resembles similar sounds heard in horror or thriller movies.

NVIDIA's next-gen GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card has some fresh new specs, with leaker "kopite7kimi" providing some updates on the second-fastest Ada Lovelace GPU.

The new GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card was first rumored with a rather large 420W, but the last purported power consumption on the RTX 4080 was scaled down to 320W. But now, kopite7kimi is saying that the GeForce RTX 4080 will have total card power of 340W, but more interestingly: 16GB GDDR6X at a now faster 23Gbps bandwidth.

NVIDIA's current-gen Ampere-based GeForce RTX 3080 has 10GB of GDDR6X, which isn't enough in its class against AMD's fastest Radeon RX 6900 XT (at the time) with 16GB GDDR6, and the replacement of the RX 6900 XT in the Radeon RX 6950 XT continued with 16GB GDDR6X. NVIDIA's faster GeForce RTX 3080 Ti only has 12GB of GDDR6X, while the real dominance happens with the GeForce RTX 3090 and GeForce RTX 3090 Ti both with 24GB of GDDR6X memory.

NASA has moved the first Space Launch System (SLS) rocket to launch pad 39B at the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on August 17, which moved the 322-foot-tall rocket into its correct position ahead of the scheduled test launch on August 29 or after. The SLS rocket will take NASA's Orion crew capsule on a reconnaissance mission towards the Moon, eventually cruising around in and then flying back to Earth.

The SLS rocket is the most powerful rocket that NASA has ever constructed, with 8.8 million pounds of thrust that comes from its four core stage engines along with two rocket boosters. The goal of the Artemis I mission is to gather large quantities of data regarding the journey to and from the Moon that will assist the space agency in its Artemis II mission, where it will send four astronauts back around the Moon.

Elon Musk's lawyers have sent out subpoenas to prominent figures such as former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey regarding the Twitter lawsuit.

Musk backed out of the $44 billion deal to purchase the world's second-largest social media platform Twitter on April 25, which turned into a lawsuit filed by Twitter to get Musk to follow through with the initial deal to purchase the platform. Twitter filed for an expedited trial citing the nature of the deal and how leaving it in limbo negatively impacts the company. The court agreed to an expedited trial with a date set for October 17.

The latest unravelings of the Musk-Twitter trial are Musk's lawyers now sending out subpoenas to former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, along with former product chief Kayvon Beykpour and former head of revenue Bruce Falck. At the moment, it's not known how Dorsey or the other former Twitter officials that received subpoenas fit into Musk's legal teams' argument, but the subpoena, at least with Dorsey, refers to "documents and communications reflecting, referring to, or relating to the impact or effect of false or spam accounts on Twitter's business operations."

A fossilized shark tooth from a species that has been extinct for many years now has been discovered by a curious 8-year-old boy.

Riley Gracely of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, traveled to Myrtle Beach with his father, Justin Gravely, his mother, Janelle Gracely, and his brother, Collin. The family decided to have a look around Palmetto Fossil Excursion Summerville, South Carolina, in search of a discovery, which was later found by Riley, who was exploring the bases of large piles of dirt and gravel. Riley bent down and pulled out what he believed to be a tooth and when the object was finally excavated, it was revealed to be a 4.75-inch tooth from a prehistoric shark.

In an email to Fox News Digital, Justin Gracely explained that employees at the Palmetto Fossil Excursions said that Riley's discovery was significant considering the species the tooth is from, its condition, and its size. Officials confirmed the tooth to be from an Otodus angustidens, which is a species of megatooth shark that is a close relative of the megalodon, the world's largest prehistoric shark that measured in at a whopping 68 feet in length.

Apple's next-gen MacBook Pro laptops were expected to shine brightly, with the laptops packing Apple's in-house M2 Pro and M2 Max SoCs that were meant to be made on TSMC's new 3nm process node... well, that might not be happening.

The new Apple M2 Pro and M2 Max SoCs were being built by TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) to be used in the upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops, but according to insider Ming-Chi Kuo, the new CPUs for these MacBook Pro laptops will enter mass production in Q4 2022.

Kuo tweeted that given TSMC's guidance that the "3nm will contribute revenue starting in 1H23, processors of 14" and 16" MacBook Pro models may still adopt the 5nm advanced node". Translation: TSMC's new 3nm process node isn't shaping up so well, so they have to make Apple's new M2 Pro and M2 Max SoCs on the 5nm advanced node instead.

We're seeing some juicy silicon news coming out of the Hot Chips 34 conference, where AMD showed off the GPU block diagram for its upcoming MI250X MCM GPU.

AMD's upcoming MI250X GPU was detailed at Hot Chips 34, where we get the GPU block diagram that gives us all the good stuff in terms of specifications and details. The new MI250X features not 1 but 2 x GPUs for a total of 58 billion transistors, with AMD getting TSMC to make their MI250X GPU on their 6nm process node.

We also have 128GB of HBM2e memory at a huge 3.2TB/sec memory bandwidth, in-package Infinity Fabric with 400GB/sec of bandwidth between the two GPUs. All-in-all, AMD has 10 chips that makes up the MI250X "Aldebaran" GPU, with a mix of GPU dies, and HBM2 memory dies (2 x GPUs, 4 x HBM2e stacks per GPU for 8 x HBM2e stacks total + 2 x GPUs = 10 chips in total).

Intel has detailed a little more information on its next-gen CPU packaging technology, shifting some of the dust across the rumors, and more at Hot Chips 34.

Intel shows off Meteor Lake-P CPU: 2023 laptops with 6P+8E CPU power

Intel showed off a new chip layout for its Meteor Lake platform, with a great look at tiles (or chiplets) including the quad-tile layout: CPU Tile, GPU Tile, SoC Tile, and the IOE tile. Intel confirmed that the CPU Tile would be made on the "Intel 4" process node or 7nm EUV process node, while the SoC Tile and IOE Tiles will be made by TSMC on their 6nm process node (N6).

As for the GPU Tile, Intel Meteor Lake GPUs were rumored for TSMC's upcoming 3nm process node, but due to some issues with that, Intel decided to use TSMC's new 5nm process node instead. Industry sources have said that it was the plan all along: for Intel's GPU Tile on their Meteor Lake CPUs to be on the TSMC 5nm process node.

Intel has detailed a little more performance data on its upcoming Ponte Vecchio GPUs on its upcoming Sapphire Rapids HBM server platform during Hot Chips 34.

The next-gen Intel Ponte Vecchio GPU was detailed during a presentation by Intel Fellow and Chief GPU Compute Architect, Hong Jiang, where the new Ponte Vecchio will arrive in 3 configurations with a single OAM that has up to an x4 Subsystem with Xe Links, in a single or dual-socket Intel Sapphire Rapids platform.

Performance-wise, Intel said a 2-Stack Ponte Vecchio GPU configuration on a single OAM is capable of up to 52 TFLOPs of FP64/FP32 compute, 419 TFLOPs of TF32 (XMX Float 32), 839 TFLOPs of BF16/FP16 and 1678 TFLOPs of INT8 horsepower. Intel said its maximum cache sizes and peak bandwidth for each of them: the Register File size on Intel's new Ponte Vecchio GPU is 64MB with a huge 419TB/sec of memory bandwidth.

Intel's entry-level Arc A380 desktop graphics card has reached the hands of an overclocker, who has pushed it above 3.0GHz, but the overclocker said that the experience and process were far more complicated than it should be.

SkatterBencher secured an Intel Arc A380 graphics card from a Chinese website and has been playing with it ever since: the first problem that he ran into was that the official Arc Control software is the one and only overclocking tool to push the Arc GPUs. But it was so bad that the overclocker had to analyze driver code to see what the click OC percentage slide actually does: that's when he discovered that there is a limit of 2450MHz for the default Voltage-Frequency curve.

Intel has two overclocking modes on its Arc discrete GPUs: offset mode and lock mode. Offset mode increases the maximum frequency with higher voltage, similar to NVIDIA, while the lock mode provides you with the ability to adjust voltage and frequency manually, where you can push up and above the maximum 2450MHz GPU frequency.

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has announced the new ClearMR Compliance Test Specification (ClearMR), a new industry standard and logo program that sees gaming monitors meeting a new quality metric for grading motion blur.

In the future, new gaming monitors that have a VESA-certified ClearMR brand logo will know that their new purchase -- be it a display panel, TV, monitors, computers with embedded panels like all-in-ones, laptops, notebooks, and tablets -- will have a new Clear Motion Ratio (CMR) metric, which is defined in the ClearMR standard.

VESA has a clear numerical value based on the ratio of clear pixels to blurry pixels, something that will help consumers easily compare the amount of motion blur between VESA-certified ClearMR displays. VESA replaces the Motion Picture Response Time (MPRT) and other methods of blur characterization since the other metrics -- in the words of VESA -- "do not accurately reflect the true nature of blur".
