NVIDIA CEO hulk-smashes rumour of foundry switch

| Oct 6, 2010 7:43 PM CDT

It's not like NVIDIA is going through enough crap right now - to add to this are the rumours of NVIDIA entering into a deal with Global Foundaries to produce the upcoming Tegra SoC's - this deal would be nasty to now long time partner of NVIDIA, TMSC, as it would see NVIDIA getting all snuggly with GlobalFoundries - who is owned by competitor AMD.

Galaxy outs GTX 460 WHDI edition with wireless TV connectivity

| Sep 30, 2010 1:06 PM CDT

When it comes to video cards for your computer there are a lot of different brands and models to choose from. Most of them will have the same tech inside and offer the same features. Galaxy has a new NVIDIA GTX 460 video card that is different from the other GTX 460 cards already on the market with a new and very cool feature that will make it easy for you to send content from your PC to the TV.

Disclaimer: right now, everything is "rumor" - until proven a fact, please keep this in mind.

For what has seemed like a very long time - AMD has teased us with no refresh of their Evergreen (5xxx series), then the name change from ATI to AMD and now finally, some concrete release dates for you to check on your calender.

NVIDIA blames TMSC for Fermi's failures

| Sep 23, 2010 8:08 AM CDT

Thing's just can't go right for NVIDIA's Fermi - now an interview is out with Jen-Hsun Huang, in which he blames TMSC for Fermi's problems - all of it's performance issues, heat problems all TMSC's fault.

He had the following to say: "The parasitic, umm, characterization from our foundries and the tools and the reality are simply not related. At all. We found that a major breakdown between the models, the tools and reality."

But, as Charlie says in his article (in which I agree with) if TMSC were completely at fault - then wouldn't all fabrication done at TMSC have had issues. AMD were able to release the 5xxx series to a smashing success and over 20, 000, 000 GPU's sold in the 5xxx family alone in under 12 months shows this.

Charlie also notes that Fermi's failed architecture will be felt in the industry for years - and NVIDIA pointing their finger at TMSC is the wrong thing to do.

I'd really love to be a fly on the wall at the green HQ in times like this...

AMD Barts specs leaked

| Sep 16, 2010 8:49 PM CDT

Chiphell, a Chinese tech site has leaked out some specs on the upcoming Barts series from AMD.

The upcoming Barts series will be the successor to the very popular HD 5750 and 5770 boards. What's impressive about the new Bart boards, is it will compete with the GTX460. Not only will it compete, but it's upgraded it's memory bus from 128 to 256bit.

Barts XT will have 12 SIMD's, 960 shaders, 48 texture units and 32 ROP's. To compare this to the current Juniper XT (5770), the current board has 800 shaders and 40 texture units (with the 128bit bus). Core clocks should be about the same (850mhz), but with the internals being tweaked - it looks like this might become the favorable board of the upcoming gaming season in November. Barts XT looks to have a TDP of over 150W.

Barts PRO will feature 800 shaders, 40 texture units and 32 ROP's - this is pretty much smack on what the 5770 is now, but with the increased 256bit bus, it will be interesting to see how this performs against the current 5770 and the competitions GTX460. Barts PRO will have a TDP of under 150W.

Memory wise, the XT variant will have 1GB and the PRO version will contain 768MB. By going on the above specs, Barts XT might hover around 5830/5850 performance - which again, makes it very good value for money if AMD can keep the price south of $200 - $220.

The 6 series from all these leaks is starting to form a very good picture for not only AMD but consumers. Consumers like you and me are the ones that win in these battles.

It looks like the Barts boards will be a winner... let's just hope NVIDIA don't have a cow, man.

Zotac GeForce GTX 460 AMP! Edition video card gets new cooler and faster clocks

| Aug 18, 2010 10:06 AM CDT

When it comes to video cards there are two big companies that most gamers choose from - NVIDIA and ATI/AMD. For a long time the cards to get were offerings from NVIDIA for many enthusiasts, though ATI is coming on strong with some of its recent cards offering good performance at a good price. Zotac is an NVIDIA card partner and has announced the availability of a factory overclocked video card called the GTX 460 AMP! Edition.

Bit more substance on GTX 485 existence - coming this fall?

| Jun 17, 2010 2:14 AM CDT

The german folks over at Hardware-Infos have managed to get a good scoop on NVIDIA's next dethroning weapon to the GTX 480; a mild leap forward to make it worthy of its GTX 485 SKU. NVIDIA's own chief developer Bill Dally was apparently the source for Hardware-Info's news about the card's existence, who says it will see light of day this fall.

GIGABYTE readying up GTX 470 SuperOverclock

| Jun 7, 2010 4:41 AM CDT

GIGABYTE had a large VGA display at Computex this year, the majority of which are made to stand out in the market using non-reference cooling solutions, factory overclocks and more attractive bundles.

One of the real standouts on display, though, would have been a new member of its highly impressive SuperOverclock series video cards that's based on the GTX 470. This is one GTX 470 well worth having and leaves the reference design for dead.

NVIDIA's Manju Hegde leaves for AMD

| May 25, 2010 11:08 AM CDT

The technology field is highly competitive not only in the products launched but in employees. Competitors are always after key workers at places like Apple, Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD. Workers routinely move from one company to the other as they are lured away to the competition.

NVIDIA has reportedly lost its VP of CUDA and PhysX Manju Hegde to AMD. Hedge was key in helping NVIDI Again support for PhysX and CUDA early in the life of both offerings. Both are doing well today.

The loss of Hegde certainly won't spell doom for NVIDIA, but AMD should reap some benefits. AMD has been unsuccessful for the most part in getting the developer community to adopt its platforms like HDR with AA. Hedge should be able to help AMD a lot there.
