TweakTown previews World of Warships at E3 2013

Trace Hagan | Gaming | Jun 12, 2013 10:34 PM CDT

E3 2013 - Unfortunately we don't have a video to show you for World of Warships as they wouldn't let us record the pre-alpha gameplay. We can, however, describe the experience using words. We got to see two different recorded gameplay scenarios, both of which were pretty cool 6v6 sea battles. World of Warships will really round out WarGaming.net's war-themed offerings.

World of Warships will join World of Tanks and World of Warplanes as part of WarGaming.net's line-up. In World of Warships, there is an aircraft carrier class that features planes. It'd be really cool if the WarGaming team could integrate World of Warships and World of Warplanes into a single game with planes being launched from the aircraft carrier. However, I inquired if they were planning to do this and at this time, they aren't.

There is still quite a bit of polishing to do--remember, we saw pre-alpha code running--but the models, gameplay mechanics, and overall game seem like they will end up being a hit alongside the current offerings. We'll share more details when they become available.

We get a glimpse at the new Xbox 360 design, looks like the RROD may be gone

Charles Gantt | Gaming | Jun 12, 2013 2:51 PM CDT

E3 2013 - The original Xbox 360 design was attempt at making a stylish, sleek gaming console that would fit into the decor of any living room. In reality what happened was Microsoft designed a massive heat trap that eventually wound up killing many of the consoles after just a few months of use.

On Monday Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 would be receiving its third redesign in an effort to more closely align the 360 with the aesthetics of the new Xbox One. We finally got a good look at the new 360 design thanks to our friends over at Gizmodo. The exterior refresh is a drastic step away from the Xbox 360 we have seen in the past, with a two-tone color scheme similar to the Xbox One.

The new Xbox 360 also appears to have ditched the power ring for a more modern machined metal design alongside adequate cooling vents placed in the side of the case. The vents appear to be placed directly over the CPU heatsink and additional vents have been placed on the top of the box. If you pick up one of these redesigned Xbox 360's post some pics on our Facebook wall!

Microsoft continues Xbox downward spiral, says customers without internet can stick with Xbox 360

Charles Gantt | Gaming | Jun 12, 2013 2:20 PM CDT

As someone with a business degree, I know that the main objective of a business is to get your latest and greatest product into the hands of the consumer. Apparently no one at Microsoft bothered to go to business school, or at least no one bothered to listen to anything that was taught.

In an interview with GameTrailers, Microsoft's Don Mattrick addressed consumer concerns about the Xbox One and those who have little or no access to broadband internet. When asked what gamers with no internet should do, Mattrick said: "Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity; it's called Xbox 360," he continued "If you have zero access to the Internet, that is an offline device."

He went on to attempt to empathize with US service men and women by saying:

Facebook jumps on the #hashtag #bandwagon, now those annoying tags become something useful

Charles Gantt | Internet & Websites | Jun 12, 2013 1:45 PM CDT

For about a year now Facebook users have been adding useless hash tags to the end of their post. I am sure I speak for many when I say this was probably the most annoying trend to ever hit the social network. Unfortunately we're about to see an onslaught of hashtags as Facebook has just enabled them to function similar to the way Twitter utilizes them.

Facebook says that starting today hashtags will be clickable on the social networking service that will function similarly to other services like Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr and Pinterest. When clicking on a hashtag, you will see a feed pop-up of what other people are saying about that event, or topic.

Facebook says that now you can:

SparkFun Electronics beats iFixit to the punch, becomes first to post a teardown of Google Glass

Charles Gantt | Wearable Computing & Fashion | Jun 12, 2013 12:43 PM CDT

Who would spend $1500 on Google Glass only to tear it apart to see what makes it tick? SparkFun Electronics, that's who! During last weekend's Autonomous Vehicle Competition hosted by SparkFun, company founder Nate Seidel learned that two of his friends would be picking up their pair of Google's Glass after the competition. Being the good friend he is, Nate offered to pay for the glasses if he could reduce them to the individual components it is made from.

Luckily for us, friends Scott Torborg and Star Simpson agreed to the tear down, something I am sure any hacker worth their soldering iron would do! Good guy SparkFun posted the initial images from the teardown but opted to leave the meat and bones of the post to Scott to feature on his personal website. (source #2)

I won't cover the entire teardown here, but the hackers did note that while the tear down did require some specialized tools, and a high level of skill, if one is very careful and patient, they could easily teardown and rebuild Glass with no noticeable side effects. It appears that Glass is comprised of just 12 hardware sets, with the motherboard and camera / display mechanical assembly being the largest.

Sony backpedals a little on their No DRM announcement, says there will be development studio DRM

Charles Gantt | Gaming | Jun 11, 2013 3:52 PM CDT

E3 2013 - Less than 18 hours ago, the gaming world was taken by storm when Sony's president Jack Tretton announced that the PlayStation 4 disk-based games can be freely given to friends and purchased on the used market. His exact words were "PlayStation 4 won't impose any new restrictions on used games" fast-forward by a little over half a day and the company seems to be taking a few steps back from that statement.

In an interview with Game Trailers, Tretton stated that while Sony's first party created games will not feature DRM, third-party games will be at the full control of their developers. This means that studios like EA, Activision, and others are fully allowed to prevent users from trading, sharing, or selling used games through one-time use activation keys.

"Well, I mean, we create the platform, we've certainly stated that our first-party games are not going to be doing that, but we welcome publishers and their business models to our platform," said Tretton. "The DRM decision is going to have to be answered by the third parties, it's not something we're going to control, or dictate, or mandate, or implement,"

Oculus Rift goes HD, E3 attendees can experience virtual reality in full 1080p goodness

Charles Gantt | Extended Reality (XR) | Jun 11, 2013 3:39 PM CDT

E3 2013 - Oculus VR is kicking off their E3 experience with a major upgrade to the Oculus Rift, which now is able to display the virtual-reality world in full 1080p glory. The company has upgraded the virtual-reality headset not by creating a custom display but switching out the original non-HD display developer units received to an off-the-shelf 1080p HD display used in cell phones.

Early reports are stating that the new display makes a huge difference and the immersive world created actually feels like you're really there. The 1080p screen is actually split in half and each eye sees a 960x1080 portrait display.

Word is that the company was worried about how the switch from landscape to portrait mode might affect games but he said that there have been no issues reported. Additionally they have not noticed any issues in with the existing games created by the 10,000 developers who now have Oculus Rift development kits.

AMD unleashes powerful 5GHz CPU, say hello to the FX-9590

Charles Gantt | Processors | Jun 11, 2013 10:45 AM CDT

E3 2013 - AMD has just unveiled its most powerful CPU to date, the FX-9590, and eight-core processor that is clocked at 5GHz from the factory. Alongside the FX-9590, AMD also showed off a 4.7GHz FX-9370 both of which feature the company's flagship Piledriver architecture.

"At E3 this week, AMD demonstrated why it is at the core of gaming," said Bernd Lienhard, corporate vice president and general manager, Client Products Division at AMD. "The new FX 5 GHz processor is an emphatic performance statement to the most demanding gamers seeking ultra-high resolution experiences including AMD Eyefinity technology. This is another proud innovation for AMD in delivering the world's first commercially available 5 GHz processor."

Do not get too excited though as for now the FX-9590 and FX-9370 are both only being offered to systems integrators. AMD says this is just the initial rollout and that both of the eight-core processors will eventually be available for individual purchase. At the moment no pricing information has been released but as soon as we know more we will be sure to keep you updated.

Mad Catz officially announces Project M.O.J.O console, hardware specs inside

Charles Gantt | Gaming | Jun 11, 2013 9:28 AM CDT

E3 2013 - Yesterday I posted the first images of Project M.O.J.O from Mad Catz, and promised to follow up with the hardware specs when I knew more. This morning Mad Catz has officially announced M.O.J.O at the E3 expo, and along with the announcement comes a list of hardware specifications.

Mad Catz M.O.J.O is an Android based micro-console the features a NVIDIA Tegra-4 processor, 16GB of storage, integrated Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth Smart 4.0. Mojo also features a pair of USB ports, HDMI out, and audio out as well as a microSD card slot for storage expansion.

Possibly the coolest addition to M.O.J.O is the inclusion of Mad Catz Xbox-like C.T.R.L.R Bluetooth gaming controller. Since the micro-console features a Tegra-4 it is possible that you could stream games from an NVIDIA-equipped PC, such as NVIDIA's project Shield does. Mad Catz has not yet released pricing but seeing as how it's up against $100 micro-console such as the OUYA, Game Stick and Gamepop, we are hoping that it will be similarly priced. Mad Catz says that we can expect to see M.O.J.O for sell this holiday season.

iOS 7 is a love child of all mobile operating systems, and that's not a bad thing

Anthony Garreffa | Software & Apps | Jun 11, 2013 3:19 AM CDT

I really thought that last week with Computex was busy, but I didn't quite prepare myself for the onslaught of data that would be slamming into my face via websites, Facebook, Feedly, our own website and e-mail. E3 and WWDC at the same time? Stahp!

Anyway, iOS 7 has been unveiled to the world and I'm liking what I see. It definitely is a huge departure to the previous iterations of iOS which is great because iOS was becoming very stale for me, and a lot of others. iOS 7 now features a 'flat' design, which is gorgeous and you really need to check out videos on it to get an appreciation for just how much work Apple have put into their next-generation mobile OS.

The icons that are on the home screen move too, so if you move your iPhone from side-to-side, the icons kind of move - allowing you to see "behind" them, which is a nice trick. Multi-tasking on iOS 7 is heavily borrowed from Android, which is a great thing as multi-tasking on iOS until now has been pretty slow and clunky - but now, Apple have it done very well.

Sony, you have impressed the world today, please don't stop doing so. Lots of love, the world of gamers and technology enthusiasts.
