Intel's upcoming 10nm-based Cannonlake will combat Ryzen

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Feb 1, 2017 9:27 PM CST

AMD is poised to change the entire PC market with its Ryzen processors launching next month, leaving a once super confident Intel in its silicon dust - but Intel is firing back, confident that it can sustain the fumes of Ryzen with its upcoming Cannonlake architecture.

During a chat with Deutsche Bank Securities, Intel boss Brian Krzanich was asked about the company "That's very helpful. I guess as my follow-up, you talked about the ASPs in answering a prior question. I wondered about the competitive intensity in the PC market. You're taking a more conservative tack than the third-party vendors are forecasting, but your primary x86 competitor is coming out with a new architecture for the first time in many, many years. So, I wonder whether it's on the ASP or the unit or the market share side how you're factoring that into your forecast for the year".

Krzanich replied with: "Sure. I would tell you that we always look at this environment and say there's going to be a competitive risk in the environment. And we're always focused on really, our own product roadmap and making sure that we have the highest performance product. So, when we look at 2017, we still believe that our product roadmap is truly the best ever it's been".

New leak: AMD Ryzen WILL arrive in 6-core models

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Feb 1, 2017 8:10 PM CST

After reports surfacing that AMD wouldn't be launching 6-core variants of its upcoming Ryzen CPUs, there are new reports that AMD will indeed be launching 6-core Ryzen CPUs.

CanardPC tweeted that there is a 6-core/12-thread Ryzen CPU clocked at 3.3GHz base, lower than the 8-core/16-threaded Ryzen CPU. It makes sense, as if the silicon can't handle the additional two CPU cores, they can disable them and have a rock solid 6-core Ryzen chip instead.

VideoCardz is reporting that there are 3 different Ryzen CPUs in the high-end SKUs that are of interest:

Nintendo Switch has over 100 games in development

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 1, 2017 5:15 PM CST

Nintendo outlines a substantial software trajectory for the Nintendo Switch with a massive games library, ensuring the handheld-console hybrid will have a consistent offering of unique and varied games.

Nintendo Switch has over 100 games in development

In a recent earnings report, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima confirmed that over 70 developers are currently developing over 100 games for the new transforming Switch handheld-console. This number of games is almost one-seventh of the Wii U's total software library, and the last projection was given by Nintendo America's Reggie Fils-Aime who said 50 devs working on over 80 games.

"After the presentation on January 13, we have continued to receive requests from more and more software publishers who want to develop games for the system," Mr. Kimishima said in a presentation slide. "At the presentation, we announced that there were over 80 titles in development from more than 50 software publishers, but that number has now climbed to over 100 titles from more than 70 publishers. Please look forward to more announcements about the software lineup in the future."

Final Fantasy 15 on PC tailor-made for high-end rigs

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 1, 2017 3:33 PM CST

Final Fantasy 15 director Hajime Tabata wants to unlock the game's full potential by bringing it to PC, and if it does happen, he'd love to expand the game with user-created mods.

Final Fantasy 15 on PC tailor-made for high-end rigs

Even on consoles, Final Fantasy 15 is a visual marvel to behold. Honestly it's the best looking PS4 game I've ever seen, besides Uncharted 4. Despite the awesome fidelity, amazing lighting, and immersive atmospheric effects, it's still quite obvious the game is being held back by underwhelming console hardware. FF15 was absolutely made for PCs.

In fact, the RPG was actually created using NVIDIA Gameworks technology, and Square Enix's high-end Luminous engine was demoed with four NVIDIA GTX Titan X GPUs back at BUILD 2015.

Apple overthrows Samsung as top smartphone vendor in Q4

Lana Jelic | Business, Financial & Legal | Feb 1, 2017 1:52 PM CST

Apple overtook Samsung's #1 position in Q4 and became top global smartphone vendor in the world.

According to a report from Strategy Analytics, Apple sold around 800,000 units more than Samsung in Q4 2016. Apple shipped 78.3 million smartphones worldwide and captured 18% market share in Q4 2016, rising 5% annually from 74.8 million units in Q4 2015. This was the iPhone's best performance in over a year.

Playing a huge role in this was Samsung's fiasco with the Galaxy Note7. The Korean company shipped 77.5 million units worldwide, around 800,000 less than Apple.

Obsidian isn't making a new Fallout game

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 1, 2017 1:36 PM CST

Obsidian Entertainment squashes the rumors and confirms it's not making a new Fallout game. That means the rumors about Fallout: New Vegas 2 and Fallout: New Orleans are absolutely false.

Obsidian isn't making a new Fallout game

Yesterday FragHero perpetuated a rumor that Obsidian is currently developing a sequel to Fallout: New Vegas. I saw through this right away, but decided not to report on it without more info: how could Obsidian, a smallish dev team with 50-200 employees, be working on a massive sequel to Pillars of Eternity and a huge open-world Fallout game? The answer is simple: it can't.

"We've said plenty of times that we'd love to work on a Fallout again if Bethesda wanted us to, we just aren't at this time," Obsidian PR rep Mikey Dowling told Kotaku. "Right now we're very focused on the Fig campaign to make our first ever sequel in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. Whenever a new Fallout comes around though, whoever is doing it, we all look forward to playing it!"

Battlefront 2 coming holiday 2017 with full story mode

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 1, 2017 12:29 PM CST

EA has confirmed that Battlefront 2 will have a fully-fledged singleplayer campaign story mode along with a ton of extra content, characters, ships and game modes.

Battlefront 2 coming holiday 2017 with full story mode

Compared to its predecessor, Battlefront 2 will be a behemoth. At least that's the signals EA sent during its recently Q3 2017 earnings call, where it talked up the sequel and promised to "deliver fans exactly what they want from a Star Wars game." In fact, Battlefront 2 is so jam-packed with extra content (including a meaty story mode) that EA had to assign three studios to work on it: DICE, Motive and Criterion.

Nintendo Switch paid online service costs $26 a year

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 1, 2017 11:42 AM CST

Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima has confirmed the Nintendo Switch's paid online subscription service will be quite inexpensive.

Nintendo Switch paid online service costs $26 a year

Starting in Fall 2017 Nintendo will charge owners of its new Nintendo Switch console a subscription fee to play online. This move was quite controversial when it was announced, however, thanks to analyst Dr. Serkan Toto, we know now the fee will be extremely competitively priced at just 2-3,000 yen ($17.50 - $26.50) a year. Compared to Microsoft and Sony, who both charge $59.99 a year for their online service, this could end up being a huge boon for Nintendo.

Unlike PlayStation Plus and Xbox LIVE Gold, Nintendo's paid online service won't give subscribers access to an incremental free games library. Instead Nintendo will grant subscribers limited access to a single NES or SNES Virtual Console game for a month, and then revoke access after the month is over. The selection will rotate from month-to-month and subscribers will get a discount on that period's game should they want to buy it from the eShop.

NASA shows most detailed photos of Saturn's rings

Lana Jelic | Science, Space, & Robotics | Feb 1, 2017 9:25 AM CST

After more than 12 years studying Saturn, its rings, and moons, NASA's Cassini spacecraft has entered the final year of its epic voyage. The conclusion of the historic scientific odyssey is planned for September 2017.

NASA shows most detailed photos of Saturn's rings

Cassini already sent some impressive images of the Saturn's atmosphere, and now it has shown us detailed images of Saturn's rings.

The views are some of the closest-ever images of the outer parts of the main rings, giving scientists an eagerly awaited opportunity to observe features with names like "straw" and "propellers." Although Cassini saw these features earlier in the mission, the spacecraft's current, special orbits are now providing opportunities to see them in greater detail. The new images resolve details as small as 0.3 miles (550 meters), which is on the scale of Earth's tallest buildings.

New BioWare IP might be EA's unique answer to Destiny

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 1, 2017 6:20 AM CST

EA today revealed information on BioWare's mysterious new IP, confirming many of our reports to be accurate: the game is action-based, and will likely have online multiplayer. In a sense, this new game could be EA's unique answer to Bungie's MMO-like shooter Destiny that uses action-adventure elements instead of FPS.

New BioWare IP might be EA's unique answer to Destiny

BioWare's new IP is entirely fresh, and isn't based on Dragon Age or Mass Effect. Interestingly enough, however, the new IP has been developed by BioWare's original Mass Effect Edmonton studio for the past five years (since 2012) and will release by March 2018. Based on the teasers video from E3 2014 (see above) we can surmise it's sci-fi based, which aligns with the Edmonton studio's skillset.

EA confirms the IP is a "clean sheet design with new concepts, new gameplay mechanics, and new stories set in a unique universe." EA has said that the new IP won't be an RPG, and will instead be "genre-melding" across the action and adventure genres while retaining the deep character progression and story that BioWare is known for.

AMD reiterates: Vega graphics cards coming in Q2 2017

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Feb 1, 2017 12:53 AM CST

I've just written about SK Hynix's new dates for HBM2 deployment, which will affect AMD's Vega GPU roll out a little, but we're still getting Vega graphics cards in Q2 2017.

AMD confirmed the news during their latest financial report, where they said: "AMD introduced preliminary details of its forthcoming Vega GPU architecture designed to address the most data- and visually-intensive next-generation workloads. Key architecture advancements include a differentiated memory subsystem, next-generation geometry pipeline, new compute engine, and a new pixel engine. GPU products based on the Vega architecture are expected to ship in the second quarter of 2017".

As for the new Vega graphics cards with HBM2, we should expect 8GB of HBM2 with just under 410GB/sec bandwidth - and a release later in the year with the faster 512GB/sec HBM2.

AMD Vega to launch with slower HBM2, faster HBM2 later

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Jan 31, 2017 11:40 PM CST

AMD is expected to launch its Vega graphics cards in the next couple of months, with an unveiling in May and a launch in June to be expected - but now SK Hynix have updated their memory product catalog, giving us a better look at the bandwidth numbers around HBM2.

SK Hynix updated their graphics databook, showing off HBM2 for Q4 2016 with a 4-stack 4GB HBM2 product with two different speeds: 2Gbps and 1.6Gbps, with 256GB/sec bandwidth and 204GB/sec bandwidth, respectively. This has now changed, with a shift in availability.

The company is now listing the slower 1.6Gbps (204.8GB/sec) for Q1 2017, while the faster 2Gbps (256GB/sec) HBM2 now stuck with a 'TBD' for availability. This could lead AMD to launch a slower HBM2-based card in Q2, and a faster Vega graphics card later in the year.
