NVIDIA continues to improve DX12 performance on GeForce

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Mar 2, 2017 10:29 PM CST

NVIDIA Editor's Day 2017 - During NVIDIA's Editor's Day at GDC 2017, the company didn't just unveil their new super-beast graphics card in the form of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti - but also the price drops on the GTX 1080 (with the faster 11Gbps GDDR5X memory) and the faster GTX 1060 (with 9Gbps GDDR5).

On top of that, the company also revealed its DX12 performance improvements over the last few months - all through driver updates. NVIDIA provided some performance numbers of their games running on a GeForce GTX 1080 at 4K, with games like The Division, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Gears of War 4, and more.

The biggest gains come from Rise of the Tomb Raider and Hitman - with performance improvements of 33% and 23%, respectively. NVIDIA compared the performance of the game on release, against the latest drivers, with some impressive performance increases. Things will only continue to improve in DX12 for GeForce gamers into the future.

AMD teases massive multi-GPU improvements with EMA

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Mar 2, 2017 10:17 PM CST

GDC 2017 - Radeon Technologies Boss, and self proclaimed ice cream connoisseur announced during AMD's second annual Capsaicin & Cream event that the company has been working on improving the multi-GPU experience for gamers.

AMD has been working closely with developers on Explicit Multi-Adapter (EMA) technology, alongside DX12 and Vulkan, which bypasses the driver-based SLI and CrossFire technology.

During the event, AMD teased Sniper Elite 4 on the stage running in DX12 with EMA - with near perfect CF scaling. A single Radeon RX 480 graphics card was pushing around 30FPS at 4K with Very High textures enabled, but with EMA enabled and RX 480s in CF, the performance jumped to 60FPS - a significant, and very important increase.

AMD heads into the gaming cloud with LiquidSky

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Mar 2, 2017 9:58 PM CST

GDC 2017 - AMD had quite the show at their second annual Capsaicin & Cream event during GDC 2017 this year, unveiling the new name of their next-gen Radeon RX Vega graphics cards - teasing 16K 120FPS VR, and so much more.

One of the more interesting announcements was the partnership between AMD and LiquidSky, the game streaming service - which will connect gamers to a host server, with the games being rendered in the cloud - similar to how GeForce Now works. You'll need a good internet connection obviously, but there are other issues in between.

The rendering of the game is done in the cloud by LiquidSky, which means there will be latency in between - unescapable latency, at least for now. AMD used a not-so-great Surface Book to run Battlefield 1 in the cloud, with the hope of the future to provide millions of gamers Vega-powered gaming from the cloud, to your desk (or TV) in the near future.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 priced dropped to $499

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Mar 2, 2017 9:37 PM CST

NVIDIA had quite a lot to talk about during its recent Editor's Day in San Francisco alongside the Game Developers Conference, with the unveiling of the new GeForce GTX 1080 Ti - priced at $699.

But when the new GTX 1080 Ti is priced at $699 and beats the Titan X which costs $1200... what happens to the GTX 1080? Well, NVIDIA has provided quite the price drop - slicing $100 from the price, with a fresh new price of $499. Yes, $499 for the GTX 1080. But we're not finished yet.

At the same time, NVIDIA announced a new spruced up version of the GTX 1080 with the faster 11Gbps GDDR5X memory. Not only that, but there's also a new GTX 1060 with 9Gbps GDDR5 memory. We'll let you process that for a moment - because it's a lot of Team Green news to hear all at once.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti now available for pre-order

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Mar 2, 2017 8:29 PM CST

NVIDIA unleashed the graphics card beast of 2017 - or at least so far, during GDC 2017 with the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. Faster than both Pascal champions in the GTX 1080 and Titan X, and priced at a not-so-damn-bad $699.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti now available for pre-order

NVIDIA has now opened up pre-orders on the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, available in its Founders Edition form directly from NVIDIA's website. There will also be AIB partner cards on offer, with both ASUS and MSI teasing them so far - and I'm sure the rest will follow.

If you haven't read up on the new GTX 1080 Ti, it rocks 11GB of the fastest VRAM known to man - with 11Gbps-capable GDDR5X, up from the 10Gbps GDDR5X used on GTX 1080 and Titan X. Priced at $699, it's offering Titan X beating performance - while the Titan X is priced at $1200. Amazing stuff, isn't it?

Google's new AI tech is SCARY, and 'highly aggressive'

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Mar 2, 2017 8:01 PM CST

We all know what happens when Skynet is turned on, and it feels like we continue to get closer each week - with Google now teasing its new AI, after it learned "highly aggressive" behavior.

Google's new AI tech is SCARY, and 'highly aggressive'

Google had its AI technology in a wolfpack hunting game scenario, where the AI had to gather fruit - with the concept of the game based around cooperation, but it went bad. AI were represented by colored squares that moved on a grid collecting fruit squares of differing colors.

As they collected fruit, the AI collected points - while the fruit squares would regenerate. But then the AI began to change, as they were capable of damaging the other AI players in the game with laser beams. The AI was fine when there were plenty of fruit squares, but when the fruit squares became scarce - the AI started attacking other AI, just like we would against other gamers in a video game.

AMD's Roy Taylor teases the future of VR: 16K and 120Hz

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Mar 2, 2017 7:09 PM CST

GDC 2017 - During AMD's recent Capsaicin & Cream, Corporate VP of Alliances Roy Taylor - who beams with excitement and passion every time I see him, provided 3 world exclusives for AMD during Capsaicin & Cream.

AMD's Roy Taylor teases the future of VR: 16K and 120Hz

His first talk was 'The Key to VR is Immersion' tackled a few of the big problems of VR as Taylor said that the screen door effect of current-gen VR headsets breaks "the spell" of immersion. He said that "we must be entirely in the experience", teasing that AMD and Radeon Technologies Group are working on next-gen graphics and VR relationships which is exciting.

The reason? Roy talked about "making great narratives and VR content brings along some difficult compromises", and touted it as the "rock, paper, scissors" situation. Roy teased that the future of VR is 16K, "billions of entities/objects" at 120FPS. This is absolutely mind boggling, requiring not just next-gen GPUs like Vega, but a few generations away - maybe Navi, or even the GPU architecture after that.

Watch Final Fantasy XV running on a GTX 1080 Ti

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 2, 2017 6:19 PM CST

GDC 2017 - Square Enix's latest tech demo shows Final Fantasy XV running on a high-end PC armed with NVIDIA's supercharged GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card.

Watch Final Fantasy XV running on a GTX 1080 Ti

Remember when we said Square Enix was experimenting with Final Fantasy XV on PC using dual GTX 1080s in SLI? Now at GDC 2017 we see the fruits of the team's labor, and Final Fantasy XV may be a substantial step closer to a PC release.

The tech demo shows the evolution of Final Fantasy XV's proprietary Luminous Engine, which was used to deliver amazing next-gen performance, visuals, lighting and atmospheric effects even on outdated consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One. But the devs prove that PC is where the RPG will truly shine to a near-blinding luster. The demo taps NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1080 Ti to deliver amazing power boosts in every regard: dramatically better lighting and animations, real-time shadows, dynamic destructible environments, and even the ability to drive a souped up Regalia anywhere you want.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War PC specs revealed

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 2, 2017 11:40 AM CST

If you're planning on getting the Shadow of Mordor sequel on PC but don't have a powerful rig, don't worry: the PC spec requirements aren't too bad.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War PC specs revealed

On the heels of Shadow of Mordor's success, Warner Bros. Games recently announced a sequel called Middle-earth Shadow of War that's coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC in August. Considering the last game was fairly well optimized across the PC build spectrum, we should expect the same for the sequel, as the flexible required PC specs seem to indicate.

In order to play Shadow of War on PC you'll need at least an Intel i5-2550K CPU, a GeForce GTX 670 or AMD Radeon HD 7950 GPU, and 8GB of RAM. The game's install size will clock in at about 60GB, but given the huge scope this should be expected.

Borderlands 3 will be powered by Unreal Engine 4

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 2, 2017 10:28 AM CST

GDC 2017 - Gearbox's Randy Pitchford has confirmed that Borderlands 3 will leverage the power of Unreal Engine 4 to bring high fidelity advanced effects, dynamic shadows, lighting and much more to the next-gen Borderlands sequel.

Borderlands 3 will be powered by Unreal Engine 4

Gearbox is doing some very, very interesting things with Unreal Engine 4. The studio has been developing Borderlands 3 for a while now, and at GDC 2017 Randy Pitchford showed off the game's first ever technical demonstration to highlight some of the more advanced effects the devs are using to make the game. "We're going to show you some technology that we're building within UE4 that will power the next Borderlands game," Pitchford said before the demo.

The demo shows just how far Borderlands has come, and how truly next-gen Borderlands 3 will be when it ships. The team has created some impressive experimental effects and features that absolutely breathe new life into the franchise and I fully expect Borderlands 3 to push the bar to new heights.

New Zelda hits #4 on Metacritic's best games of all time

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 2, 2017 9:22 AM CST

Nintendo has created a Witcher 3-level masterpiece swan song with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and shortly after the review embargo broke, multiple perfect scores propelled the game to Metacritic's best games of all time list.

New Zelda hits #4 on Metacritic's best games of all time

At the time of writing, Breath of the Wild is sitting comfortably as Metacritic's fourth best game of all time. The top spot goes to Ocarina of Time on N64, but I do think Breath of the Wild could even unseat the legendary classic to cement itself as a must-have system-seller that Nintendo needs for its new Switch system.

Metacritic plays a vital role to any game developer's success, and high scores on the review aggregate site can determine whether or not devs get bonus pay. If Breath of the Wild does one thing, it proves that the old adage "they don't make 'em like they used to" might be outdated: Nintendo is back in action and better than ever.

Nintendo Switch uses friend codes

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 2, 2017 7:20 AM CST

Now that Nintendo Switch's day-one update is rolled out we can finally see the exact way to add friends onto the system...but you're not going to like it. Yes, it uses friend codes.

Nintendo Switch uses friend codes

Press Start has confirmed that the Nintendo Switch uses the outmoded--and often confusing--Friend Code system to add different players to your friends list. It was originally believed that the FC system would be scrapped in favor of being able to add users via their Nintendo Account User IDs, however this wouldn't work because anyone can change their User IDs at any time. So hence the necessity of the Friend Code system.

However it's worth noting that this is just one way to add friends to your list on the Switch. Users can search for gamers they recently played with and add them that way, or even add anyone you're playing LAN games with with multiple Switches.

Project Scorpio will support Mixed Reality in 2018

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 2, 2017 6:39 AM CST

GDC 2017 - Microsoft has announced that its "monster" 4K-ready Project Scorpio console will support both AR and VR headsets in 2018, facilitating a more unified Mixed Reality approach.

Project Scorpio will support Mixed Reality in 2018

We've known for a while that Project Scorpio would support "high-fidelity VR experiences," but now Redmond has confirmed what we suspected at the start: those Windows 10 headsets being made by companies like Dell, Lenovo, Acer, and ASUS will bring VR and AR experiences to the total Windows Mixed Reality platform--which will soon include Xbox One consoles and Project Scorpio.

"We're also excited to share that Windows Mixed Reality experiences will light up on other devices over time, beyond desktop and Microsoft Hololens. Our plan is to bring mixed reality content to the Xbox One family of devices, including Project Scorpio, in 2018," Microsoft announced in a recent update post.

'Tron 3' director reveals film 'not dead', but 'frozen'

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Mar 1, 2017 10:23 PM CST

If you're a 'Tron' fan like myself, then you've no doubt been eagerly awaiting the next installment in the franchise. Although the six year wait between 'Tron Legacy' and today is nothing like the almost year gap from the first, it does cause one to question whether the project will indeed every move forward. And 'Tron Legacy' director Joseph Kosinski isn't quite ready to call it game over.

Speaking to Collider at a fan event yesterday, Kosinski explained the film's current status thusly.

Switch Pro controller can be used to play PC games

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 1, 2017 6:18 AM CST

Nintendo's new Switch Pro controller can actually be used to natively play PC games--but only via Bluetooth.

Switch Pro controller can be used to play PC games

A PC will actually recognize a Switch Pro controller when hooked up via USB Type-C, however you can't actually play any games over the protocol. But if you pair the Switch Pro controller to your PC via Bluetooth, you can play games on PC or Mac. It even works on Android devices.

But there is one caveat: the Switch Pro is DirectInput not XInput, meaning it may not work in some games that were made for XInput controller mapping, such as The Witcher III: Wild Hunt.

Xbox One gets $10 EA Access-like subscription service

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 28, 2017 11:23 PM CST

Microsoft today announced Xbox Game Pass, a new paid subscription service that offers 100+ Xbox One and Xbox 360 backward compatible games on a month-by-month basis.

Xbox One gets $10 EA Access-like subscription service

Xbox Game Pass will cost $10 a month, and Xbox LIVE Gold isn't required for the sub, however you will need Gold to play multiplayer in Xbox Game Pass games. The service is exclusively for Xbox One and not Xbox 360 or Windows 10, however if a Play Anywhere game such as Resident Evil 7 is included, users can play them on Windows 10 PCs as well as Xbox One consoles. Just don't expect non-Play Anywhere games like Halo 5: Guardians to be playable on PC.

Microsoft is borrowing lots of ideas out of other sub service playbooks, including Netflix, EA Access, and even PS Now. Unlike Sony's disastrous PlayStation Now service, Xbox Game Pass will allow users to download full games to their consoles. The games lineup will rotate every month just like Netflix, and once a game is rotated out you can't play it any more. This is similar to Nintendo's game plan with the Switch's online service.
