Ethereum could replace Visa networks, even game servers

Anthony Garreffa | Cryptocurrency & Mining | Sep 20, 2017 3:35 AM CDT

I've adopted cryptocurrency like a mad man in the last couple of months, with my own mine powered by 50 graphics cards, but I do it for the love of technology and for the love of the future. Ethereum, and many other cryptocurrencies are the future of finance in the world.

Ethereum could replace Visa networks, even game servers

Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin has said that Ethereum could replace things like credit card networks, and gaming servers. Buterin explains: "There's the average person who's already heard of bitcoin and the average person who hasn't".

Buterin continued: "Where Ethereum comes from is basically you take the idea of crypto economics and the kinds of economic incentives that keeps things like bitcoin going to create decentralized networks with memory for a whole bunch of applications. A good blockchain application is something that needs decentralization and some kind of shared memory".

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Sep 20, 2017 1:52 AM CDT

Apple made quite the splash with its recent iPhone X announcement, but with the phone starting at $999, most people will be turning towards other flagship smartphones if they aren't diehard Apple fans.

Google Pixel 2 teased in 'Kinda Blue', starts at $649

This is where something like Google's upcoming Pixel refresh comes into play, with the new Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 to be unveiled at a media event on October 4. We're now hearing about official colors and pricing of the larger Pixel XL 2 smartphone, which will really turn some iHeads.

Google will reportedly launch Pixel XL 2 in three colors: Kinda Blue, Just Black, and Clearly White. They'll be offered in 64GB and 128GB variants, priced at $649 and $749, respectively. This isn't too damn bad at all.

Google Pixelbook: Surface competitor starts at $1199

Anthony Garreffa | Laptops | Sep 20, 2017 12:31 AM CDT

Google has a media event on October 4 where we should see the next-gen Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 smartphones, but it seems like we might be getting a peak at their upcoming Chromebook Pixel successor, something teased now as Google Pixelbook.

Google Pixelbook: Surface competitor starts at $1199

Pixelbook is an official name, with Google seemingly adopting the Pixel branding in a big way, with a few different variants of Pixelbook to be made available. This is what we should expect:

Google's previous-gen Pixel laptops were just that... laptops, they didn't fold into a tablet like Pixelbook does. This allows Pixelbook to compete directly against Microsoft and their increasingly popular Surface and Surface Book line of products. Pulling Google into the same line as Microsoft, the new Pixelbook laptop has an optional Pixelbook Pen which is $99.

Biostar's upcoming RACING Z370 GT7 motherboard teased

Anthony Garreffa | Motherboards | Sep 19, 2017 11:35 PM CDT

Intel's upcoming Coffee Lake-S architecture is nearly here, something that will be led by the flagship Core i7-8700K processor. But now we have Biostar's upcoming RACING Z370 GT7 motherboard spotted, and it looks GOOD.

Biostar's upcoming RACING Z370 GT7 motherboard teased

Biostar says that the upcoming RACING Z370 GT7 motherboard will support DDR4 RAM up to 3866MHz, with reinforced PCIe slots, more M.2 slots, Realtek ALC1220 audio chipset, and the Intel I219V gigabit ethernet controller.

I'm loving the black and yellow style on the motherboard, with M.2 cooling teased at the bottom. The RGBs above the I/O panel look great too, but I think this board is going to look great when used in a specific black/blue build... giving me some ideas. Watch this space.

Core i9-7980XE benched: super-fast, but costs $1999

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Sep 19, 2017 10:56 PM CDT

Intel's most expensive consumer processor in a very long time is nearly here, with the Core i9-7980XE boasting its 18C/36 of CPU power, beating AMD's current Ryzen Threadripper 1950X flagship CPU with 16C/32T.

Core i9-7980XE benched: super-fast, but costs $1999

There are now early benchmarks on the new Intel Core i9-7980XE processor, with 'Coolenjoy' releasing their data on the ASUS APEX motherboard, with the 18C/36T clocked at 4.2GHz on all CPU cores... impressive stuff. Intel has its new Turbo Boost Max 3.0 letting the Core i9-7980XE boost all CPU cores up to 4.4GHz.

Still, just look at these benchmarks... Intel's new Core i9-7980XE is a megatasking BEAST. Priced at $1999, you'll need to sell a kidney or two, but I'm sure it's worth it.

Custom Radeon RX Vega cards not coming until November

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Sep 19, 2017 10:15 PM CDT

It looks like we won't be seeing any custom Radeon RX Vega graphics cards until at least the end of October, and probably more into November.

Custom Radeon RX Vega cards not coming until November

According to Hardware.fr who reached out to AIB partners making custom Radeon graphics cards, and said that no manufacturers are ready apart from one unnamed manufacturer who said that they're waiting for Vega GPUs to arrive.

If AIB partners are still waiting for Vega GPUs, then the custom Radeon RX Vega graphics cards are still many months away, with a November launch making sense. Remember that I posted a world exclusive scoop on there only being less than 16,000 x Radeon RX Vega graphics cards in the months post-launch... and here we are.

Monster Hunter World launches January 2018

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 19, 2017 3:13 PM CDT

Capcom's new MMO-style Monster Hunter game gets an official release date, and it's sooner than we expected!

Monster Hunter World launches January 2018

Monster Hunter World will see a simultaneous global release on January 26, 2017, Capcom today confirmed at this year's Tokyo Game Show. The game, which brings players from all across the world together with online-based co-op play, sees gamers entering an engaging and dynamic world replete with seamless map roaming, drop-in and drop-out multiplayer, and tons of monsters that're bound to a realistic food chain. In a recent article I admitted Monster Hunter World looks truly alive, and I can't wait to return to a proper console-based MonHun experience.

Launching this ambitious online game in January means the title will fall within Capcom's fiscal year 2018 timeline, which ends on March 31, 2018. This will ensure the publisher ends its fiscal year with massive earnings from the landmark RPG--not only is the game a mainline entry in the massively popular Monster Hunter franchise, but it's an online game which offers tremendous potential for monetization.

Key Japanese developers including the game director for the beloved Armored Core series have joined the Left Alive team to give it a distinct style and flair.

Square Enix has recruited talented alums like Toshifumi Nabeshima (who directed the Armored Core series), and Takayuki Yanase (mech designer, Ghost in the Shell: Arise, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Xenoblade Chronicles X) to flesh out the world and the survival mechanics. Divinity: Original Sin 2 launch nearly didn't happen

Shaun Grimley | Gaming | Sep 19, 2017 5:47 AM CDT

Larians Studios' epic ARPG Divinity: Original Sin 2 nearly didn't launch on its scheduled release date. In a Kickstarter update Larians Studios' Founder Swen Vincke, revealed that a power outage of not just the studio, but the entire city (Ghent, Belgium) caused some stressful hours prior to launch.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 launch nearly didn't happen

This power outage wasn't the only issue encountered by the team, Swen also reveals that the PC they had planned to use for uploading the final build to Steam refused to boot. In the end, Swen and his team were able to upload the build in time for a successful launch. There is some bad news with translations for other languages not available at launch, this is due to writers making late changes and not having time to voice other languages. However, this update should be released this week.

It appears the public are happy with D:OS2, with over 85,000 concurrent users recorded on Steam today. This is a huge achievement and I would expect this to push over the 100k mark, remember that D:OS2 is also released on GoG so there may already be over 100k concurrent players across both platforms.

Thieves rob van full of Total War: Warhammer 2 CE's

Shaun Grimley | Gaming | Sep 19, 2017 3:29 AM CDT

If you've seen Oceans Eleven or The Italian Job, you would be familiar with movies based upon pulling off the perfect heist to steal precious cargo. In Milton Keynes, UK the perfect heist has been pulled off, if you're a fan of the Total War series that is.

Thieves rob van full of Total War: Warhammer 2 CE's

Total War: Warhammer 2, set for release September 28, has fallen victim to the greatest heist of the century as a van transporting copies of its collector's edition was robbed.

"We'd like to reassure fans who have pre-ordered their Serpent God Edition that this incident will not affect them receiving their copy," Total War brand director Rob Bartholemew said. "Copies of the game obtained before launch will not be playable until the game is activated at 8am BST on launch day."

AI detects Alzheimer's 10 years before symptoms happen

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Sep 19, 2017 2:33 AM CDT

We've all seen movies like The Terminator and The Matrix, where AI wipes out the human race, because reasons. But AI can be a force for good as well, with some researchers using AI to detect Alzheimer's earlier than ever before.

AI detects Alzheimer's 10 years before symptoms happen

Some researchers have looked at blood and cerebrospinal fluid test, while others are developing tools to find early signs of Alzheimer's. But a team of researchers from the University of Bari in Italy might have found the answer, where they've developed an algorithm that can spot tiny structural changes in the brain that are caused by Alzheimer's... up to 10 years before symptoms appear.

The trained AI has received 67 MRI scans, with 38 of them from Alzheimer's patients, and 29 from healthy patients. The researchers divided the scans into small regions, with the AI system analyzing the neuronal connectivity between.

Analyst: iPhone X hype will hurt iPhone 8 pre-orders

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Sep 19, 2017 1:36 AM CDT

Apple has hyped its new iPhone X to infinity and beyond, with the new iPhone X starting at $999... and according to Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities, the iPhone X hype is killing iPhone 8 pre-orders.

Analyst: iPhone X hype will hurt iPhone 8 pre-orders

Kuo explained in a recent post: "Historically, it takes 3-6 weeks or more to ship new iPhone models after they are available for preorder, due to initial tight supply and robust demand. However, our latest review indicates it will take less than 1-2 weeks for the iPhone 8. We believe this is because there is a strong likelihood that iPhone X demand will cannibalize iPhone 8 pre-orders".

I think we'll see iPhone 8/8 Plus orders pick up when people realize there aren't enough iPhone X smartphones to go around, which should begin in November when Apple begins shipping iPhone X handsets.

Google Glass Enterprise Edition unboxed, packs Intel CPU

Anthony Garreffa | Wearable Computing & Fashion | Sep 19, 2017 12:45 AM CDT

I was a huge fan of the original Google Glass headset, but the company went quiet with its wearable headset for a few years, but they're now back with an enterprised-focus wearable: Google Glass Enterprise Edition.

Google Glass Enterprise Edition unboxed, packs Intel CPU

The first Google Glass Enterprise Edition has shipped, with an unboxing video promptly done, revealing that the new headset uses USB-A instead of USB-C, which sucks.

Inside, Google has made quite a number of improvements including an Intel Atom processor, 32GB of internal storage, and a 780mAh battery. There's an audible speaker, as well as dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity.

Samsung Galaxy S9: next-gen camera that shoots 1000FPS

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Sep 19, 2017 12:00 AM CDT

Now that the Galaxy Note 8 is here, we're only a little over 6 months away from Samsung announcing their next-gen Galaxy S9 smartphone. We should expect Samsung to go for Apple's throat with the Galaxy S9, since it'll be the first flagship smartphone to arrive post-iPhone X.

Samsung Galaxy S9: next-gen camera that shoots 1000FPS

Samsung will reportedly use their own in-house camera sensor on the Galaxy S9, passing the 4K 60FPS sensor inside of the iPhone X and even their own Galaxy Note 8, with a camera that can shoot 1000FPS video. Samsung should be shooting 1080p video @ 1000FPS, and not 4K - as that would require some out-of-this-world technology.

How did Samsung do this? Especially considering how much of a strain shooting 1000FPS video will have on the camera sensor, the processor, RAM, and everything in between.

EVGA releases VRM board: tweak GPU/MB voltage on-the-fly

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Sep 18, 2017 10:49 PM CDT

EVGA continues to lead the pack with overclocking products, and underlines that fact with the release of their new EPOWER V card. EVGA's new standalone VRM board provides additional power to graphics cards and motherboards, allowing you to break out of the voltage shackles on even the best graphics cards and motherboards on the market.

EVGA releases VRM board: tweak GPU/MB voltage on-the-fly

The EPOWER V board features two fully-independent voltage outputs, as well as a built-in EVBot MKII, which lets you adjust voltage control on-the-fly. The EPOWER V board is powered by 3 x 6-pin PCIe power connectors, while input is provided through a 12+2 phase design that provides a massive injection of VCORE and VMEM into your graphics card, letting it break through those ridiciulously low voltages, and into an entire new level.

EVGA even provides USB 3.1 Type-C and softwre controls, which lets you connect the USB cable up to your PC and use software to control the EPOWER V board. A fully detailed rundown on the amazing new EPOWER V board can be found here.

No VR support for Star Wars Battlefront II

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 18, 2017 10:04 PM CDT

We don't have much longer to wait until EA releases Star Wars Battlefront II, with developer Criterion saying that "there is no VR" in the game.

No VR support for Star Wars Battlefront II

The news came from Metro GameCentral, who talked with Criterion General Manager, Matt Webster, who said: "There is no VR. At some point we could sit down and spend a good number of hours talking about where VR needs to get to in order to work with that, because in something like this you're doing the job of a fighter pilot. And in the real-world that has a significant physiological effect on you, which would dramatically limit the audience".

Webster continued: "But making the VR demo absolutely informed the work we're doing now. So there's a lot of the VR mission's soul in Starfighter Assault".
