Updated iPad Air tipped for October, but don't expect any other tablets this year

| Sep 11, 2023 2:15 PM CDT

While Apple is getting ready to announce new iPhones and Apple Watches within hours, a new report claims that the company is already looking ahead to October - when it's expected to announce the iPad Air 6.

Updated iPad Air tipped for October, but don't expect any other tablets this year

While unlikely to get its own event, the iPad Air 6 is set to be part of a wider announcement - possibly via a series of press releases - that will also include new M3-powered Macs. But the iPad Air 6 will be the only tablet that's part of the new product unveilings if this new report is accurate.

The report itself comes via MacRumors and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The well-connected reporter was speaking on The MacRumors Show when he apparently said that the new iPad Air 6 is coming soon, likely in October. That's also reportedly a timeframe that had been suggested on the Chinese social network Weibo, too.

Apple could be ditching some of its most popular iPhone and Apple Watch accessories

| Sep 11, 2023 2:00 PM CDT

As Apple gets ready to announce new iPhones and Apple Watches at its September 12 event, a new report claims that the company is getting ready to ditch some of its most popular accessories.

Apple could be ditching some of its most popular iPhone and Apple Watch accessories

If the report is correct, Apple is planning to discontinue all of its silicone rubber and fluoroelastomer accessories in the name of the planet - it wants to switch to a more environmentally friendly alternative.

That's according to a MacRumors report citing a tipster known as Kosutamu. They previously shared information about iPhone cables and more, although their accuracy is yet to be fully proven. Still, MacRumors believes that Apple is set to cancel some accessories based on what they've been told.

No more iPhone mini for you as cancelation rumors swirl

| Sep 11, 2023 1:45 PM CDT

As the world gets ready for Apple to announce the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro series' of devices tomorrow, September 12, it seems that the company is also on the verge of taking at least one old iPhone away.

No more iPhone mini for you as cancelation rumors swirl

While all of the talk is about the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max, it appears that the iPhone 13 mini is about to get canceled. That's according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, at least.

Gurman posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, to say that he noticed that iPhone 13 mini stocks are running unusually low right now with some orders quoted as long as two months before delivery. That would suggest that the iPhone 13 mini is not long for this world, with Apple potentially canceling the product once the Wonderlust event comes to an end on Tuesday.

Rumors of color-matched USB-C iPhone 15 cables may have been premature

| Sep 11, 2023 1:30 PM CDT

There have been plenty of rumors surrounding the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro of late with the switch to USB-C being at the center of some of them. Now, a new leak appears to contradict previous ones when it says that the new iPhones won't come with color-matched USB-C cables after all.

Rumors of color-matched USB-C iPhone 15 cables may have been premature

Previous leaks had said that Apple was going to ship color-matched braided USB-C cables with new iPhones, although it wasn't clear if that applied to the iPhone 15 series or just the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. But now one of the leakers who shared images of the cables says that they might not be for the iPhone after all. Instead, it looks likely that they are intended for Macs.

X leaker Majin Bu now says that, according to their sources, Apple will not put color-matched cables in the box with new iPhones. Instead, they'll come with white ones although they will at least be braided for the first time. They believe that the color-matched cables are instead going to be made available with new MacBooks. Rumors have already suggested that October could see the launch of at least one new MacBook powered by an upgraded M3 chip.

Apple signs Qualcomm for another three years of iPhone modems because it can't make its own

| Sep 11, 2023 1:15 PM CDT

Apple and chipmaker Qualcomm have agreed on a deal that will see the latter's modems appear in the former's devices for at least the next three years. Qualcomm confirmed the news via a press release.

Apple signs Qualcomm for another three years of iPhone modems because it can't make its own

That press release says that Qualcomm will continue to provide Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF Systems for use in new iPhones in 2024, 2025, and 2026 which means that Apple won't be using its own modems in those models. That news comes after Qualcomm had itself expected to lose Apple's business with the iPhone maker already working on designing its own modems.

In fact, Apple bought Intel's modem business back in 2019 and has been working on its own modems ever since. However, despite continued rumors that a future iPhone would use in-house modems, that seems now to be highly unlikely within the next four iPhone generations starting with the imminent iPhone 15.

The iPhone 15 Pro might be less of a chonker, here's why

| Sep 8, 2023 2:00 PM CDT

If you pick up a new iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max later this month you're likely to notice that it feels a bit less bulky, especially if you're coming from an iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The iPhone 15 Pro might be less of a chonker, here's why

That's because this year's best iPhones are going to ditch the stainless steel of yesteryear and start using titanium instead. That's the metal band that you hold around the outside of the phone and it's also what gives the device its rigidity. But the use of stainless steel made older iPhones heavy. Now, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman believes that the switch to titanium could be worth a full 10% weight savings for those picking up Apple's new models.

Writing in a larger piece discussing the upcoming September 12 iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 event, Gurman said that the switch to titanium will not only make the new iPhones more durable but it will also allow them to be around 10% lighter than the models that came before them.

China bans government officials from using iPhones causing Apple shares to dip

| Sep 8, 2023 6:34 AM CDT

Apple share price took a hit of 3.6% after news outlets began reporting China has issued a ban of iPhones across government officials.

China bans government officials from using iPhones causing Apple shares to dip

According to unnamed sources that are familiar with the matter, China's government has instructed officials to not use any iPhones, resulting in Apple shares taking a hit. Reports from The Wall Street Journal indicate that senior levels of China's government are pushing the newly implemented ban to staff through various avenues, such as chat groups and meetings. Additionally, publications have attempted to get confirmation of the news from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Apple and neither party has responded.

While this news of an official government-wide ban of iPhones may be surprisingly, it shouldn't be as Chinese officials have been slowly stepping away of Apple's iPhones for many years now, with reports dating back as far as pre-pandemic of Chinese government members dropping the iconic smartphone for smartphones manufactured in China.

China is banning iPhone use in government agencies and stage companies

| Sep 7, 2023 1:30 PM CDT

Apple's iPhones are no longer welcome in Chinese government agencies and state companies and the country looks set to make the ban even broader.

China is banning iPhone use in government agencies and stage companies

According to a Bloomberg report several agencies have already begun to tell staff that they can't bring iPhones to work. On top of that, China also wants toe to extend that to a whole whose of other government-controlled organizations according to unnamed sources who want to remain anonymous for obvious reasons.

The aim of the Chinese government is to ensure that as little foreign technology as possible in sensitive settings while China is also thought to be keen to reduce its reliance on American software. However, the move is a problematic one for Apple as it continues to focus on China as a key market. Bloomberg reports that China makes up about a fifth of the company's revenue. China is also a key location for Apple in terms of production with the majority of the iPhones ever sold having been made there.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra's specs might have leaked and they're right here

| Sep 7, 2023 1:02 PM CDT

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra isn't expected to debut until the first few weeks of 2024 but it's already leaking in a big way. The latest leak appears to have given us a great look at the specs that the unconfirmed phone will have to offer.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra's specs might have leaked and they're right here

Apple's in-house 5G iPhone modems continue to be years away from release

| Sep 7, 2023 12:30 PM CDT

Ever since Apple bought Intel's smartphone model business back in 2019 we've been waiting for it to ditch Qualcomm and start to use its own radios in iPhones and iPads. That, so far, hasn't happened despite repeated rumors that it would. Now, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple continues to be around two years off using its own modems.

Apple's in-house 5G iPhone modems continue to be years away from release

That two-year timeframe is one that seems to continue to exist no matter how much time passes, suggesting that Apple continues to have problems getting its ducks in a row for whatever reason. Kuo had previously said that the fourth-gen iPhone SE would be the first to use an Apple model and it's possible that is still the case. That phone in particular appears to have a fluid release timeline of its own, with 9to5Mac noting that it is thought to have had mass production delayed all the way into 2025. That timeframe could well match with this new modem one.

Kuo was writing as part of a larger look at how Qualcomm is going to be affected by changes to chip buying habits in the Android world when noting that Apple is expected to start using its own model chip starting in 2025. Interestingly, Kuo also said that he will discuss more details about that modem in the future.

| Sep 7, 2023 12:00 PM CDT

Apple's iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro series of devices are expected to be announced at an event that Apple has already confirmed for September 12. Now, a new report backs up previous assertions that two of the four new models are going to cost more than previous ones.

The iPhone 15 Pro is again rumored to cost more than your old model

We've already heard from various analysts and reports that Apple is set to increase the price of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, with some suggesting that the hike could be as much as $200. Now, another analyst has weighed in on the expected pricing, saying that we should look to a $100 price increase on both Pro models.

That's according to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, at least. Ives was writing in a research note seen by MacRumors when he said that the iPhone 15 Pro and Iphone 15 Pro Max will be priced at $1,099 and $1,199 respectively. Both of those prices equate to a $100 increase over the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max that they will both replace in the lineup.

Here's our best look yet at those terribly underwhelming new iPhone 15 colors

| Sep 6, 2023 1:04 PM CDT

The cat is out of the bag and Apple will stream an event on September 12, very likely announcing the new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models. But you might not need to wait that long to see what Apple has in mind because dummy units are already starting to leak ahead of time.

Here's our best look yet at those terribly underwhelming new iPhone 15 colors

We've been hearing rumors of what the new colors will be for a little while now but it's always easier to actually see these things before passing judgment. And, now that we think we have done just that we can confirm our earlier thoughts - these things look pretty terrible.

The new dummy units were shared in a video posted to the X social network by YouTuber Jon Rettinger, and they appear to show the colors that we'd been told to expect including blue, black, pink, yellow, and white. And what's clear here is that these new colors are very much muted when compared to the usually vibrant look of other non-Pro iPhones.

Apple has announced that its Wonderlust event will take place on September 12, and judging by the imagery the company has released, combined with rampant excited speculation online, we have already gotten some hints at what to expect to see at the event. Samsung rumored to upgrade Galaxy S24 Ultra with a crazy 200MP camera

| Sep 2, 2023 4:41 AM CDT

Samsung is preparing to unveil the S24 Ultra, and as we prepare for the official announcement, rumors are starting to surface about what will be inside the next-generation phone.

Samsung rumored to upgrade Galaxy S24 Ultra with a crazy 200MP camera

Ice Universe, a known tipster, has taken to X to share some rumored information regarding the S24 Ultra's camera. According to the leaker Samsung's new phone is going to come with an insane 200MP camera sensor for the primary camera sensor, which leads speculation to suggest it will be the ISOCELL HP2SX. Additionally, the latest rumors state the S24 Ultra will feature a 3x 50MP telephoto sensor.

Despite the bump in megapixels, Ice Universe says the overall specifications for the camera will likely not change and be the same as the S23 Ultra, with a 1/1.3" sensor size and 0.6μm pixels. Notably, the rumor of 3x 50MP telephoto lens would mean its replacing the S23 Ultra's 10MP telephoto lens, an aspect of Samsung mobile devices that has really gone untouched for several generations. Furthermore, if this rumor is true we can expect a new 5x zoom option within the camera app, which would be a nice addition to the 0.6x, 1x, 2x, 3x, and 10x options.

It'll soon be harder than ever to get iPhone, iPad, and Mac support from Apple

| Aug 31, 2023 4:28 AM CDT

Apple is reportedly ready to ditch its current approach of offering support via X and YouTube, with the company's own Apple Support Community not immune to changes that will see support roles slashed.

It'll soon be harder than ever to get iPhone, iPad, and Mac support from Apple

According to a new MacRumors report, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, Apple intends to eliminate social media support advisor roles across X, YouTube, and Apple's support forums.

Starting from October 1 Apple will no longer offer human support via the @AppleSupport X account. An automated message will instead be sent to anyone who mentions the account, informing them of other ways that they can get support for their problems. The same goes for the comment section of YouTube videos uploaded by the Apple Support channel.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra buyers could get Qualcomm inside no matter where they live

| Aug 30, 2023 2:00 PM CDT

Following rumors that the Samsung Galaxy S24 lineup will only come with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 inside in some countries like the United States, it seems that might not strictly be accurate after all.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra buyers could get Qualcomm inside no matter where they live

The belief was that buyers of the Galaxy S24 series of phones would get Exynos 2400 chips in their new phones if they bought them in some parts of the world including Europe and Samsung's home country of South Korea. But a new report claims that will only be the case for the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus models. Those who buy the range-topping Galaxy S24 Ultra will apparently get Qualcomm's latest and greatest chip no matter where they happen to buy the phone from.

That's according to X leaker @tech_reve who does have a reasonable history with these kinds of things. However, while Samsung's Exynos chips have been lacking in recent years it's thought that the Exynos 2400 will buck the trend - and it might even prove faster than the Qualcomm chip that people would normally prefer.
