SK hynix plans $90 billion on 'world's largest mega fab complex' fully complete in 2046

SK hynix has announced it has planned a mega fab complex called Yongin Semiconductor Cluster, which will begin construction in March 2025, with an estimated completion date in 2046... so we're still a while away.

The South Korean giant has prepared at least $90 billion towards the project, which will see four separate fabbing facilities and would be one of -- if not the -- biggest fab complex on the planet. SK hynix will have new bleeding-edge facilities on its site, as well as room for companies like South Korean rival Samsung to build other facilities there.

SK hynix will have multiple facilities up and running before its 2046 completion date, with the first of the four fabs to be operational in 2027. This is just two years after construction starts, similar to TSMC's new bleeding-edge facility in Japan, which also took just two years to build... meanwhile, Intel and TSMC continue to struggle with US semiconductor fab construction with multi-year delays ahead for Intel's plant in Ohio.

The Apple Vision Pro will debut in China before year's end, Tim Cook confirms

The Apple Vision Pro is currently only available to buy in the United States but the Apple website says that it intends to launch the headset in new countries before the end of the year. So far the company hasn't said which countries, but we now know that China will definitely be among them.

That's the news after Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed as much to China's state media during a recent visit to the country. Cook was in China to celebrate the opening of a new Apple Store in Shanghai as well as to speak with local officials and supply chain partners. According to a Reuters report, Cook was asked about the Apple Vision Pro and when it would arrive in the country. The report says that the Apple Vision Pro will go on sale in China this year.

There is currently no firm information on when that will happen but previous reports had suggested that Apple could launch the Apple Vision Pro in new countries before the June WWDC event. other countries are also expected to be part of the 2024 lineup but as yet Apple has not confirmed which ones will be included.

The macOS 14.4.1 update just fixed that weird USB hub problem you've been fighting with

Apple has today released the macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 software update to the public, bringing with it no new features but a number of important bug fixes that are likely to be a big deal for those who suffered from those issues. One of those issues related to a bug that caused some USB hubs not to function correctly when connected to an external display.

Apple's new update is now available for download for free via the System Settings app on your Mac and it's currently rolling out to Apple's servers across the world. If you aren't yet able to download the new update it's important to try again later, with Apple's servers sometimes slow to update.

In terms of fixes, Apple says that the new macOS Sonoma software fixes an issue that caused some USB hubs to misbehave, with users having reported that they could no longer get their external display to work when it was connected to a Mac running macOS 14.4 via a USB hub.

Apple Vision Pro support for a future Apple Pencil is reportedly being tested already

The Apple Vision Pro has been on sale for a couple of months at this point but a new report claims that there could already be a big change in the works, and it might arrive sooner rather than later. If the report is true, Apple is already testing a way to use the Apple Pencil with the Apple Vision Pro, but quite how that will work is yet to be confirmed.

The report comes via unnamed sources speaking with MacRumors and it's said that Apple has already tested a new Apple Pencil with visionOS support. It's thought that the new support would allow people to use an Apple Pencil with artistic and creative apps like Freeform and Pixelmator software, it's thought.

In terms of how that will work, it's been suggested that users will be able to draw or write using an Apple Pencil on a desk or similarly flat surface and then have the strokes appear in an app running on the Apple Vision Pro. The move could make it easier to write notes and whatnot, much like what can be done on an iPad, but while using an Apple Vision Pro instead.

NVIDIA's RTX 3050 received a new spin on the graphics card not so long ago, a considerably cut-down version with 6GB of VRAM, and apparently it's selling well in China.

Indeed, this GPU - intended as a fresh option in place of the old GTX GPUs which have been chucked on the scrapheap - is under 'huge' demand in China, according to a report highlighted by Wccftech.

So much so, that apparently graphics card manufacturers over in the country are increasing the asking price of the RTX 3050 6GB, or that's the word on the grapevine, specifically from the Chinese Board Channel forums.

OpenAI is trying to sell its video-generation AI software to Hollywood

OpenAI recently revealed its upcoming video-generation software named Sora, which is set to revolutionize how videos are made through users simply typing out what kind of video they want created and then waiting for it to be generated.

The unveiling of Sora was certainly mind-blowing as the examples that were shown were almost indistinguishable from human-created videos. To be completely fair, the Sora-created videos did feature some tell-tale signs of AI-generated content such as errors with physics, human hands, and people walking. But, at a glance, or without knowing what these tell-tale signs are, the videos were would pass completely undetected by viewers.

Now, Bloomberg has reported that OpenAI, the creators of Sora, are now taking the new AI-powered tool to directors and film studios in Hollywood. The report doesn't state which film studios or directors have showcased the new technology, but an OpenAI spokesperson did confirm the company is trying to collaborate with the industry.

OLED pixel technology has been used in smartphones and TVs for many years now, and with each iteration of the technology, improvements are being made to the quality of the panel, particularly with the reduction of known problems. But now we are starting to see the gaming industry be blessed with gorgeous QD-OLED panels, and the brands behind these new gaming monitors are rolling out features such as MSI's OLED Care technology to reduce the chances of debilitating issues such as burn-in.

For those who don't know, burn-in occurs when the same static image is displayed for extended periods of time. For example, the time and date located in the bottom right-hand corner of Windows. Notably, burn-in isn't something the average user needs to worry about as many different windows are opening and closing, refreshing the pixels. However, some use cases will have to worry about it, such as word processing workflows that don't require many window changes or even gamers that play for extended periods of time with static images in their HUD (a red dot in the center of the screen for FPS games).

In the latest edition of Bloomberg's Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman, a known Apple insider, revealed iOS 18 will feature more customization features for the iPhone home screen.

In previous editions of Gurman's Power On newsletter the reporter has revealed that artificial intelligence-powered features will be the main focus of iOS 18, and that Apple is gearing up to release what could be the biggest iOS update in the company's history. Notably, MacRumors reports that iOS 18 will make the home screen "more customizable" and that users will be able to place app icons freely on the grid.

This doesn't mean users will be able to put apps wherever they want, as MacRumors explains that sources informed them iOS 18 will introduce the ability to create blank spaces, rows, and columns between apps. So, there will still be an invisible grid present. As for AI features, reports indicate that iOS 18 will arrive with a plethora of AI features that will be designed to "help manage your daily life".

WASP-12b is an exoplanet orbiting its host star WASP-12, and the reason for its interest by astronomers is its strange egg shape and proximity of just 1,400 light years from Earth, which is close in astronomical terms. Additionally, astronomers have predicted that WASP-12b will eventually be consumed by its host star as its trajectory indicates a death spiral will occur, which will result in the exoplanet approximately twice the size of Jupiter being completely consumed by WASP-12.

Researchers previously estimated that WASP-12b would be consumed by its host star in approximately 10 million years, but new research suggests it will happen in just 3 million years. Notably, WASP-12b has such a narrow orbit that almost one year for the exoplanet, or one full orbit around its host star, is a single Earth day. Its extremely close proximity of just 2.1 million miles to its host star results in surface temperatures around 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,210 Celsius) and such a strong gravitational pull from the star that it warps the exoplanet into an egg shape.

The move by China to ban US chip manufacturers from its systems is only pushing further hostilities between the two nations. At the very least, the decision certainly stirs up the global chip market, as big US players in the space can no longer access government customers within the region. A new report from The Financial Times reveals the Chinese government has now banned Intel and AMD chips within its systems, citing privacy concerns regarding the chips and its push to have "safe and reliable" equipment within its systems.

The ban on these US-made chips came after China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology posted a list of all viable CPUs, which didn't include AMD and Intel, and listed "unnamed" Chinese manufacturers. This move by China is one of many the nation is taking to further isolate itself away from international markets and turn toward creating "in-house" solutions.

After announcing earlier this year that the first human patient has received Neuralink's brain-computer interface (BCI) and is recovering healthily, Neuralink founder Elon Musk has said the company's Blindsight implant is "already working".

The recent announcement from Musk comes after his brain-computer interface company Neuralink livestreamed a long update on the first human patient to receive the company's implant, Nolan Arbaugh, a 29-year-old man who was paralyzed from the deck down following a tragic diving accident eight years ago. The livestream showcased Arbaugh controlling a PC cursor using his thoughts, Arbaugh saying he has been enjoying long Civilization IV gaming sessions, and a demonstration of Arbaugh using the BCI to play Mario Kart.

With progress being conducted on "Telepathy" the BCI implant within Arbaugh's head, Elon Musk has already begun talking about a new chip coming out of Neuralink. The founder of the company took to his personal X account to reply to a video of him on-stage at a Neuralink event explaining the company is working on curing blindness, even in people that were born blind. Musk said, "Blindsight is the next Neuralink product after Telepathy".

The courageous first patient to undergo treatment by Neuralink is a 29-year-old man named Nolan Arbaugh, who explained via a video posted to the Neuralink X account that he was unfortunately paralyzed from the neck down after a tragic diving accident eight years ago. Now, Neuralink has posted a new hour-long video to its social channels, providing an update on Arbaugh's health following the implant and demonstrating the capabilities of the brain-computer interface (BCI).

During the company meeting, which featured Arbaugh as a guest, Neuralink showcased a quick gameplay video of Arbaugh playing Nintendo's Mario Kart. The video shows some split screen gameplay against another player, and what is impressive is that its hard to distinguish which player is Arbaugh, demonstrating the capabilities of Neuralink's BCI. Notably, Arbaugh was playing Bowser, and after watching the video its quickly seen the level of dexterity Arbaugh can have using the BCI.

You'd think a team working on Formula 1 cars would be using advanced software, but nope... it's been discovered that an F1 team has been using Microsoft Excel for the Williams car build workbook.

Formula 1 management shocked to learn team used Excel for 20,000-part inventory

James Vowles and Pat Fry took over the team principal and chief technical officer roles for the Williams F1 in 2023, discovering the team had been using Excel to manage the car. The Race reports that this was just one of the features that the "team's outdated working practices and systems" that was holding back Williams, according to Vowles.

Vowles recently worked for Mercedes before joining the Williams F1 team, where he aimed on two parts of focus for his first year with Williams. The car's technology would need to be upgraded, with some sections of the vehicle needing a 10x increase in custom-made parts, while the second was the Excel spreadsheet that couldn't handle tracking parts, and be replaced with a completely new digital parts system.

The new Micron 256GB DDR5-8800 MCRDIMMs have been designed for next-generation servers, and being at GTC 2024, you'd think they're being aimed at AI systems and servers, including Intel's new Xeon Scalable "Granite Rapids" processors, with Micron already sampling the new 256GB modules to customers.

Micron's new 256GB MCRDIMM in DDR5-8800 spec at GTC, as pictured by Tom's Hardware, was in tall form factor, but the company plans to offer its new MCRDIMMs in standard height for 1U servers and more. Micron is using monolithic 32Gb DDR5 ICs, but the tall form factor module uses 2-Hi stacked packages, meaning it will run a little hotter because there's less space for thermal dissipation.

Intel's new semiconductor chip plant in Germany has had archaeologists working on the site discovering two prehistoric burial mounds with human, and animal remains from a prehistoric human and animal sacrifice.

The State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology Saxony-Anhalt (LDA) examined the 300-hectare industrial site ahead of site development works planned by Intel in Germany. There, they discovered two approximately 6,000-year-old monumental wooden chambers containing multiple human and animal remains.

Archaeologists traced one of the two burial mounds to the Baalberg group, an anxiety Neolithic culture that existed in central Germany between about 4100 and 3600 BC. There were two large, trapezoidal burial chambers built using wood inside the mound, with a corridor running between the two chambers that experts said would've been used as a procession route by settlers in the next millennium.
