Clevo's P377SM-A notebook features Radeon R9 M290X GPUs in CrossFire

Anthony Garreffa | Laptops | Jun 4, 2014 8:18 AM CDT

Computex 2014 - The Clevo notebooks are something I just have to see when I'm at Computex, with this year being no different. There were a few great notebooks on display, but the standout was definitely the P377SM-A.

With a name that will make it hard for people to remember it, or notice it, the Clevo P377SM-A is a powerhouse of a notebook. Clevo has crammed in an Intel Core i7 Extreme processor into the 17.3-inch notebook, a display that features a resolution of 1920x1080. The GPUs (yes, plural) in the notebook packs quite the punch. There's an option of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 880M in SLI, or AMD's Radeon R9 M290X in CrossFire.

For storage, we have two HDDs, or two SSDs, Creative's Sound Blaster X-Fi MB 3, and a gaming keyboard. It's a beauty in person.

BitFenix's ATLAS case is gigantic, but beautiful

Anthony Garreffa | Cases, Cooling & PSU | Jun 4, 2014 5:18 AM CDT

Computex 2014 - Something that BitFenix was showing off at Computex this year was the absolutely huge, but undeniably gorgeous ATLAS chassis. It is massive, capable of taking 10 x 3.5-inch HDDs, and 6 x 2.5-inch drives for a total of sixteen HDDs - yes, 16!

Cooling wise, it can take 20 fans in total, with 6 up the front, 6 at the top, 6 at the bottom and 2 at the rear - all 120mm. When we talk dimensions, it begins to get quite huge - with 383 x 443 x 541mm. It's not for the faint hearted, but you might as well live life on the edge, right? BitFenix told us that this isn't the final design of the ATLAS, with the final design most likely being a bit smaller than what we saw on the show floor.

Research to bring holograms to smartphones currently under way

Michael Hatamoto | Mobile Devices | Jun 3, 2014 5:41 PM CDT

Ostendo Technologies has quietly created a projector, the same size of a Tic Tac, and the tiny chip will still be able to project a 48" diagonal image. Ostendo is a smaller, lesser known company, but has generated $90 million in venture-capitalist funding, in addition to $38 million in R&D funds from the U.S. federal government.

Ostendo hopes to have its pico projector ready for use by smartphones in 2015-2016, which means it shouldn't be too much longer before we have smartphone-powered 3D floating images. The chip could be available for $30 and has been in development for more than nine years - and will be improved to include higher resolution projected images.

"Display is the last frontier," said Dr. El-Ghoroury, Ostendo founder and CEO. "Over the years, processing power has improved and networks have more bandwidth, but what is missing is comparable advancement in display."

McAfee says majority of youth have witnessed cyberbullying activities

Michael Hatamoto | Internet & Websites | Jun 3, 2014 2:44 PM CDT

Online cyberbullying has greatly increased year-over-year, with 27 percent of youth witnessing cyberbullying, and the number increased greatly up to 87 percent this year, according to McAfee "2014 Teens and the Screen Study: Exploring Online Privacy, Social Networking and Cyberbullying" report.

A further investigation into cyberbullying, found that 72 percent was caused by appearance; 26 percent due to race or religion; and 22 percent due to sexuality. The rising popularity of social networking websites has made it even easier for members to harass one another on the Internet - and wide adoption of smartphones and tablets only intensifies the problem.

Here is what Michelle Dennedy, McAfee chief privacy officer, said in a press release: "Parents must discuss online activity with their children to better ensure their safety and security offline. Whether a child is a victim or an instigator of cruel behavior such as cyberbullying, the negative behavior can deeply affect their identity and their reputation. By uncovering our youth's online behavior activities, parents, guardians, teachers and coaches can be more aware of cruel behavior that can potentially take place offline. As a result of closely monitoring online activities, hopefully we all can do our part to provide appropriate assistance and help eradicate cyberbullying."

G.Skill show off next generation RAM with DDR4 kits

Shawn Baker | RAM | Jun 3, 2014 7:09 AM CDT

Computex 2014 - Hanging around the G.Skill both we got a chance to look at some samples of the companies upcoming DDR4 modules which will be launched later this year alongside Intels next generation X99 chipset. While looking a little bare at the moment we don't doubt that the memory will join the likes of the TridentX series when released.

While information on most things surrounding the next generation Intel Chipset continues to be quite limited. You can see we've got kits ranging from 2133MHz DDR to 2666MHz DDR in sizes of 4GB and 8GB.

Companies continue to tell us that it's hard to know just how DDR4 performance goes as getting all the pieces for an X99 based system are difficult with Intel holding everything quite close to their chest. There's no denying that the coming months will see more and more leaks regarding the chipset will come to fruition. We can't deny, though, that X99 chatter is quitter then expected as companies continue to not say too much.

Shawn Baker | Motherboards | Jun 3, 2014 6:35 AM CDT

Computex 2014 - Taking the elevator up to the 36th floor of the beautiful Taipei 101 building we headed to the GIGABYTE suite to see what was being offered by the company. Inside we were greeted with an absolute wealth of motherboards with a large amount of the focus being on the new Z97 chipset from Intel.

Split into three sections we had the Gaming series showing off boards based on the Intel Z97 and H97 chipset along with an AMD A88X based motherboard. Looking at the huge line up of motherboards we can't deny that two particular boards stole our focus. The first based on the H97 chipset. The MATX designed H97M-Gaming 3 looked great with its small foot print. With a strong lineup of features including Killer E2200 networking and support for both SLI and CrossFire this board is no doubt going to be an attractive option for people wanting something that's not too big.

Scanning the rest of the boards the awesome looking MITX Z79N-Gaming 5 was a board I knew instantly I must have. Organizing a sample on the spots the Z97 based motherboard carries with it Killer E2200 networking along with Bluetooth 4.0 and Wireless networking up to 802.11 AC. Keep an eye out for this board as GIGABYTE shoot it over to us after Computex.

The X99 motherboard tease begins, with the EVGA X99 FTW motherboard

Shawn Baker | Motherboards | Jun 3, 2014 4:35 AM CDT

Computex 2014 - With everything continuing to be under wraps on the upcoming X99 chipset from Intel due out later this year. The folks over at EVGA where showing off a motherboard with no name what so over. Asking if it was the upcoming X99 the "We're not allowed to mention anything about it" was more than enough to let us know just what was in front of us.

While we don't have any official information we can simply only work off what is in front of us. Looking at the board below you can see we've got eight DIMM slots across the top of the board which will house DDR4. On the right side you can see we have a power and reset button, LED Debug and our main 24-Pin ATX power connector to the right.

Across the bottom of the board you can see we've got five PCIe x16 slots along with a single PCIe x4 slot. The bottom right hand corner also shows off 10 SATA slots; six of which we can assume run off the X99 chipset. While EVGA couldn't confirm; based on the color design and the naming scheme, it's safe to say that this will be the EVGA X99 FTW Motherboard. They did let us know that it hasn't been finalized yet, though, so we could see some changes. Keep an eye out for more on X99 as we draw closer to its late Q3 / early Q4 launch.

Tamlin Magee | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Jun 2, 2014 8:39 PM CDT

Britain's National Crime Agency has taken the unusual step of posting an "urgent alert" for UK netizens - claiming they have "two weeks" to protect against an impending surge of botnet activity, by way of the GoZeuS and Cryptolocker malware.

Through Get Safe Online - the official British web safety group - the organization warned in conjunction with American authorities that this upcoming onslaught is part of "one of the largest industry and law enforcement collaborations attempted to date".

It's thought that pretty much everyone running any kind of Windows OS is at risk. According to the NCA, GoZeuS - AKA Gameover ZeuS - has already pocketed hundreds of millions the world over. In Win's new S-Frame case, an incredible work of art at $799

Anthony Garreffa | Cases, Cooling & PSU | Jun 2, 2014 8:00 PM CDT

Computex 2014: When we were on our factory tour of In Win, they showed us the incredible new S-Frame chassis. The S-Frame chassis is built-in painstaking detail, so don't expect many of them to be in the wild - with just 500 units being constructed in the first batch.

After those 500 have been made, we'll have to wait and see if In Win make anymore, and if they do, there'll only be 50 made per month. At $799, they're not for everyone, but there are definitely going to be people lining up to be one of those first 500, that's for sure. It definitely is a thing of beauty, so take a look at the photos and video we have on In Win's new S-Frame chassis.

Reddit, others pledge support for anti-NSA Reset The Net campaign

Tamlin Magee | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Jun 2, 2014 7:04 PM CDT

Major websites such as Reddit, Imgur and DuckDuckGo are to take part in the June 5 "Reset The Net" anti-NSA spying online campaign.

They have pledged their support for the day, backed by household-name nonprofits like Amnesty International and Greenpeace, and look like they will promote the effort by offering a splash screen and a push notification that sends users towards a mobile privacy pack. Website owners are being encouraged to begin folding encryption such as SSL, HSTS and PFS into their websites, with a view to making collecting user data more difficult.

The underlying message of the campaign, as described on the official website, is not to "ask for your privacy" but to "take it back".

WD demonstrates new PCIe SATA Express HDD at Computex 2014

Paul Alcorn | Storage | Jun 2, 2014 7:00 PM CDT

Computex 2014: WD demonstrated their newest drive utilizing a new interconnect today at Computex. The new drive is built upon the same philosophy as the WB Black2 (reviewed here by Tyler Bernath) but boasts a much faster interface. The new SATA Express connection allows storage devices to communicate over the PCIe bus, and the WD implementation leverages the AHCI command set to assure broad compatibility.

The benefit off SATA Express? Massive speed of course. Here we can see the new drive pulling down 695 MB/s in a sequential test. This is much faster than the limitation of the SATA 2 bus, which tops out around 550 MB/s. The new drive, much like the Black 2, has a 128GB SSD in tandem with a larger 4TB HDD.

Here we can see the new drive from WD, which actually has both an SSD and an HDD. We also see the new connector that provides the bridge between the motherboard PCIe slots and the connector on the drive.

Tamlin Magee | Mobile Devices | Jun 2, 2014 5:21 PM CDT

Another year, another WWDC, and Apple has gone ahead and announced a fairly extensive update, iOS 8, that's packed with features - some more standout than others.

Most strikingly is the thorough integration between OS X Yosemite. Your Mac and your iPhone are now complementary devices capable of auto-syncing, whether that is in receiving SMS or sending pages between one another.

In fact, integration seems to be something of a theme. Safari is now extension-enabled, meaning better browser integration among social apps, for example.
