Jaguar introduces their first electric car - I-PACE

Lana Jelic | Nov 29, 2016 8:28 AM CST

With time, electric cars will become the standard, so it isn't surprising that many manufacturers are unveiling their first electric cars nowadays. Jaguar is aware of this fact, and they recently introduced their first fully electric car the Jaguar I-PACE.

The Jaguar I-PACE certainly won't go into the category of affordable electric cars, but it is a stunning car. The person behind the design is the legendary Ian Callum, the man who has worked and designed for Ford, TVR, and Aston Martin.

The I-PACE Concept can achieve a charge of up to 80% in 90 minutes with a 50kW DC rapid charger, and the company says you will be able to drive 350km (218 miles) with one charge.

Tesla's next Gigafactory will be in Europe

Lana Jelic | Nov 10, 2016 12:24 PM CST

Tesla's CEO Elon Musk confirmed that he plans to choose a location for Gigafactory 2 in Europe next year. He also added that the factory would combine both the production of batteries and complete cars.

Earlier this week, Musk announced the acquisition of a German engineering group, Grohmann Engineering. During a press conference, Musk stated that Tesla is planning significant investments in Germany and Europe.

But is seems that the Gigafactory 2 won't be the only one in Europe. Musk says that long-term Tesla will have maybe two or three vehicle and battery factory locations in Europe.

Tesla will start charging to use Superchargers

Lana Jelic | Nov 9, 2016 6:22 PM CST

Free use of Tesla's superchargers was certainly one of the positive sides of buying a Tesla electric car. However, starting from the beginning of 2017, these same charges will not be completely free.

Any customer who buys a Tesla car after January 1st, 2017 will have to pay a small fee when filling up at a Supercharger station. Tesla didn't specify how much the fee would be, but it will be less than the price of filling up a comparable gas car.

Hyperloop system could become reality by 2020

Lana Jelic | Nov 9, 2016 3:20 PM CST

Within the next few years, it will take us only 12 minutes to cross a distance of 150 kilometers from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, if the futuristic transport system goes as planned in the United Arab Emirates.

The project was launched this week with the signing of an agreement between the Roads and Transport Authority agency of Dubai and Californian company Hyperloop One.

"This historic agreement will help us begin to analyze the possibilities of the world's first Hyperloop system," said Rob Lloyd, the Hyperloop One CEO.

Android Auto app now works with all vehicles

Sean Ridgeley | Nov 7, 2016 3:22 PM CST

Two years after launch, Google is making Android Auto available to all vehicles. Once you grab the 2.0 app update (which is rolling out in the coming days), a "driver friendly interface" will be available to you, so you can take advantage of Auto whether you have an older, incompatible car or not.

The interface focuses on directions, music, and communications while doing away with pretty much everything else, and presents it in such a way that all information is easily visible at a glance. Additionally, calls can be made and messages sent with voice commands (with more functionality to come in the next few weeks). Making it even easier, the app can be set to automatically start when paired with Bluetooth, making Bluetooth-supported car mounts a great fit.

Sign up here if you want to receive a notification for when the update goes live.

Hyperloop One teases big event in Dubai on November 8th

Lana Jelic | Nov 7, 2016 12:40 PM CST

While the Americans await November 8th when they will find out who the next President will be, Hyperloop One has something else planned. The company, with strong connections to Elon Musk, teased their November 8th event when, they say, a big moment in transportation history will happen.

The announcement will be made in Dubai, which is impressive as it is, so it should be interesting to see what Hyperloop One has prepared.

In the video posted on YouTube as a part of the announcement, they showed some quite remarkable travel times between cities in the United Arab Emirates. Dubai to Abu Dhabi in 12 minutes, Dubai to Riyadh in 48 minutes, Dubai to Doha in 23 minutes, Dubai to Muscat in 27 minutes.

Tesla's Gigafactory makes progress towards completion

Lana Jelic | Nov 7, 2016 7:25 AM CST

Tesla's Gigafactory is looking pretty amazing, as new drone footage shows. The footage was taken by Duncan Sinfield and posted to YouTube.

It looks like Tesla is busy finishing what is going to be world's largest building by physical area once done.

Tesla expects that the Gigafactory 1 will reduce the production cost for their electric vehicle battery and Powerwall and Powerpack battery packs by 30%. Its projected capacity for 2018 is 50 GWh/yr of battery packs and its final capacity upon completion of the entire factory is 150 GWh/yr. This would enable Tesla to produce 1,500,000 cars per year.

Fisker is back with a brand new electric car

Lana Jelic | Nov 2, 2016 3:40 PM CDT

Henrik Fisker wants to forget all about its past failures and start a new page. He launched a new company, Fisker Inc. earlier this year, previously known as Fisker Automotive.

Fisker Automotive is related to what some call the biggest failure in the history of electric cars. In 2011 they announced the Fisker Karma, a $108,000 electric car, that turned out to have a pretty bad karma... The car was recalled multiple times due to many issues and the entire fiasco ended with the company filing for bankruptcy.

Given the history, Fisker's decision to come back to the electric car market is brave. But, he is back with a new car - EMotion.

Uber teases on-demand flying cars within 10 years

Anthony Garreffa | Oct 31, 2016 1:21 AM CDT

Uber is working on something that could be the next big thing, a service called Uber Elevate, which is teased as an "on demand aviation" service.

The company teased that it has a future vision of flying vehicles that would take passengers to the skies, freeing up the roads, with the Uber app being used to secure a flying car to take you to that business meeting, dinner, or the airport.

Uber expects the first of its flying cars to arrive in 2026, with the flying vehicles capable of hitting around 150 miles an hour and taking multiple passengers. The proposed flying vehicles would take off and land on repurposed parking garages and existing helipads, and as The Wall Street Journal points out, it will "enable carbon-spewing autos to be taken off the roads, reducing traffic for earthbound commuters and making Uber's core service more efficient. In some design renderings by Uber and others, the vehicles look like small airplanes with a set of pivoting propellers for flying horizontally or vertically".

Musk shows capabilities of the new self-driving hardware

Lana Jelic | Oct 20, 2016 4:27 PM CDT

After yesterday's press conference, where Elon Musk unveiled that all Tesla cars ordered from this point will have a fully self-driving hardware, Tesla's CEO promised to share soon a video showing Tesla's capabilities with the new system.

The video, according to Musk, is the reason why the announcement was delayed from Sunday to Wednesday. But, as promised, Musk shared the video shortly after the announcement in which you can see a Tesla navigating a complex urban environment.

The video shows a Tesla car on a home-to-work route without any assistance from a driver, who is still required to sit in the driver's seat by law. You can see the car driving smoothly on the roads, stopping at red lights and letting people cross the road. In the end, the driver exits the car, which then goes to find an empty parking place and eventually park itself.

All Tesla cars now have fully self-driving hardware

Lana Jelic | Oct 20, 2016 7:31 AM CDT

Tesla is giving all its new cars the hardware for full self-driving capability, including Model 3. The cars will come with eight surround cameras that provide 360 degrees visibility around the car at up to 250 meters of range, twelve updated ultrasonic sensors allowing for detection of both hard and soft objects at nearly twice the distance of the prior system and a forward-facing radar with enhanced processing that provides additional data about the world on a redundant wavelength, capable of seeing through heavy rain, fog, dust and even the car ahead.

A new onboard computer with more than 40 times the computing power of the previous generation, which is basically a super-computer in a car, will run the new Tesla-developed neural net for vision, sonar and radar processing software. This system will provide a view of the cars surrounding that the driver alone cannot see.

Tesla's Gigafactory event scheduled for January

Lana Jelic | Oct 18, 2016 11:22 AM CDT

While everyone is expecting Elon Musk's 'unexpected announcement' on Wednesday, Tesla Motors confirmed to Electrek they will host an event at Tesla Gigafactory on January 4th, 2017.

The event will be the first one held at Tesla's Gigafactory in Nevada after its grand-opening on July 29th. It is expected that many investors will show up and see where their money is going, and it will certainly be interesting to see how the factory changed in the past few months.

Since July, the company started the construction on four additional sections so the factory, which is huge as it is, could be almost twice bigger. It will be the world's second-largest building by usable space, smaller than only the Boeing Everett Factory, and the world's largest building by physical area.

Autonomous Mercedes programmed to sacrifice pedestrians

Lana Jelic | Oct 17, 2016 2:21 PM CDT

During the past two weeks, I ran two polls about self-driving cars. In the first one, I asked whether you would you put your trust in a self-driving car and 69% of the voters said yes. The second poll was a bit trickier and contained one of the biggest issues and moral dilemmas related to the self-driving cars - if an accident is inevitable, who should the self-driving car 'sacrifice' - the passengers or pedestrians? 53% of the voters think the pedestrians should be sacrificed to save the passengers, which is much lower percentage than the recent study showed. In that study, the participants got the same question, and 75% of the voters decided to sacrifice pedestrians for the well-being of the passengers.

There is also a question of who would spend money on a self-driving car which isn't designed to protect its driver and passengers.

If you ask Mercedes-Benz, they don't have that dilemma. Their self-driving car will be programmed to save the driver and the passengers, and not the pedestrians. That's the decision they are going to stick with and implement in they upcoming Level 4 and Level 5 autonomous cars. Instead of worrying about ethics, Mercedes will program its cars to save the driver and its passengers at all costs and in every situation.

BMW's new Motorrad Vision Next 100 concept motorcycle is straight out of a sci-fi movie.

BMW shows off new AR-ready cyberpunk future bike

With its new Motorrad concept futurebike, BMW has envisioned a helmet-less future for motorcyclists. While the bike isn't fully autonomous, it will balance itself at all times--whether at high speeds or stopped--and leverages a unique AI system called the "Digital Companion" that interacts with the operator.

Drivers also get a nifty AR visor that offers a full field of view with a heads-up display that scans and shows vital data like road conditions, weather, and incoming hazards. The bike also monitor's driver's eye movements and makes small adjustments while in transit to ensure a safer, smoother ride.

After Tesla and LaFerrari, Concept One beats Porsche 918

Lana Jelic | Oct 11, 2016 4:32 PM CDT

After the demonstration of power against the Tesla P90D and LaFerrari, Mate Rimac's Concept One, an all-electric hypercar, sparked the appetite of enthusiasts and the motoring press for more.

While the LaFerrari is an extremely impressive car, many called for a race against the Porsche 918 which is the most hybridized and only four-wheel driven member of the so-called Holy Trinity. It is also considered the fastest accelerating production car ever made.

The first to challenge the Concept One against the 918 was Alejandro Salomondrin on the Milan Raceway in Michigan. The Porsche 918 is a car that regularly dominates against McLaren P1 and LaFerrari, the other two members of the Holy Trinity.

Now we've seen it all - a Tesla hearse

Lana Jelic | Oct 10, 2016 7:28 AM CDT

A Dutch company RemetzCar, specializes in stretching luxury cars into limousines, did a little something different with Tesla's Model S. They turned it into a hearse. True, a hearse isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you mention Tesla, but here it is!

To make this happen, RemetzCar cut the Model S in half and extended it enough to fit a coffin.

A higher roof has been added, as well as huge windows. On their website, the company explained how the "zero-emission sedan proves it is the ideal vehicle for transport during the farewell ceremony."

Rimac's new bike can go up to 240 km on one charge

Lana Jelic | Oct 7, 2016 9:28 AM CDT

The latest electric bicycle coming from Greyp Bikes, whose founder is Mate Rimac, the CEO and founder of Rimac Automobili, will be able to go up to 240 km on one charge. Not surprising considering it has a massive 3kWh battery.

Greyp's current model, the G12S, has a shorter range but it can go faster at 70 km/h. The new model, the G12H will have a maximum speed of 45 km/h.

According to the company, the G12H will have noticeably longer range than anything you can find on the market.

Should self-driving cars 'sacrifice' passengers?

Lana Jelic | Oct 5, 2016 4:33 PM CDT

The era of self-driving cars is right around the corner. Google is testing their autonomous vehicles for a while now, and Tesla Motors cars can drive around on their own, of course, under the surveillance of a driver. Other players like Uber have already launched their own self-driving car sharing service and GM is working with Lyft to enable the same.

The self-driving cars should bring better safety to our streets and many believe this is something that will happen within our lifetime. Mate Rimac, founder and CEO of Rimac Automobili, said our children won't have to learn to drive, meaning he believes the self-driving cars will be standard within next few decades.

However, before that happens and the self-driving cars become common, the experts have to solve some problems that are self -imposed.
