RumorTT: Apple to release 128GB fourth-gen iPad

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 28, 2013 1:33 AM CST

The iPad maxing out at 64GB for internal storage really peeves some people, and having no options for expandable storage really stops the iPad from selling even more tablets.

But according to 9to5Mac, Apple is preparing to add another SKU to their fourth-generation iPad lineup, which will join the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models. 9to5Mac's news comes from a source at a well-known US retailer, who shares the devices' SKU information with the site, marked up with internal Apple terminology that described both Wi-Fi-only and cellular-capable devices in both black, and white colors.

The devices' description give it away, naming it with a tease of 'ultimate'. 9to5Mac can't confirm the description means a 128GB model is coming, but developers are also finding references to a 128GB iOS device in the iOS 6.1 beta code, as well as icons being found in iTunes 11, too.

RumorTT: Apple to use low-end Snapdragon processor in budget iPhone

Trace Hagan | Jan 25, 2013 1:27 PM CST

Plenty of rumors have popped up regarding a cheaper Apple iPhone, with the rumors getting more frequent and in greater quantities as of late. The latest rumor out of the mill is that Apple may ditch the A6 processor and go with a cheaper alternative, such as a low-end Snapdragon, in order to maintain profit margins.

Analysts at the Detwiler Fenton firm predict the following:

Acer announces Liquid E1, a new mid-range Android smartphone running Jellybean

Charles Gantt | Jan 25, 2013 9:31 AM CST

Acer has released information on its newest smartphone, the Liquid E1, an Android Jellybean powered mid-range smartphone. It features a dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage.

The Liquid E1 also features a 4.5-inch 960x540 screen, 5-megapixel rear camera and a 0.3-megapixel front facing camera. While the specs are solid, the new phone is not something that will pose much competition for the flagship phones currently sailing in the Android arena.

The fact that the new phone includes Jellybean does however make it a desirable phone for those looking for a more budget friendly smartphone that is up-to-date. Acer has not yet released any information on pricing, but we should know something before next month's Mobile World Congress.

RumorTT: iOS 7 to launch alongside the fifth-generation iPad

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 24, 2013 3:27 AM CST

I wasn't originally going to place the 'RumorTT' stamp on this post, because I think we're going to see Apple launch a completely redesigned iOS in the near future, but KitGuru expect Apple will release iOS 7 with the fifth-generation iPad.

The fifth-generation iPad... you read that right. We only saw the release of the third-generation iPad last year, and late last year we saw the release of the fourth-generation iPad. What can we expect from the fifth-gen iPad? Well, a better screen - bigger, expected to jump up to 10 inches. We should see the resolution stay the same, or get bumped up slightly.

A better processor baked in, and hopefully a better form of battery technology is used. A thinner, lighter battery as that is one of the heavier and bulkier components of the iPad right now. What should we expect from iOS 7? Well, that's the best part - everything. Maps was a complete joke with iOS 6 and has been a constant problem for Apple since its release.

RumorTT: Google's 'X Phone' could be released in May, would feature unbreakable case, longer battery life

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 24, 2013 2:36 AM CST

I expect Google's 'X Phone' to really shake up the smartphone market, big time. If you didn't know about X Phone, it is Google's most advanced phone, that we don't know anything about.

Right now, anything reported on Google's unreleased and unnamed phone is pure speculation and rumor. We've heard that the X Phone would feature a bendable screen, a ceramic case and advanced gesture recognition technology - just to name a few. Google's X Phone will be the first, 100% "Google phone", where everything in the device will be the work of Google.

The Nexus devices are manufactured by a partner, where we've seen Google work with ASUS on the Nexus 7, LG for the Nexus 4 and Samsung on multiple Nexus devices including the Nexus 10. The X Phone would be completely controlled by Google - inside and out - and would be the result of years of hard work. The latest rumor is that we should see the X Phone unveiled as soon as May.

RumorTT: Samsung Galaxy S4 coming in April, might not be called S4

Trace Hagan | Jan 23, 2013 4:49 PM CST

The latest rumor from the Samsung rumor mill is that the Galaxy S4 is coming in April after a March announcement. Part of this rumor also details the naming and suggests that the next Galaxy S device might not be called the S4. The reasoning behind this is that Asian cultures believe the number four to be unlucky.

Because of this, many companies skip releasing a device with a four in the name. 'Four' in Asian languages is pronounced in a similar way as "death," hence why people believe it to be unlucky. Previously, companies have replaced the word "four" with the letter F, so we could see ourselves getting a Galaxy SF.

The rumor places the announcement of the next Galaxy device as roughly a month before the device releases, so sometime in March. The device is said to go on sale between April 15 and April 19. The timing is just about right for the S3 successor to make its debut, so I would give this rumor a little bit of credence. As with all rumors, nothing is confirmed until Samsung comes out and confirms it.

MSI launches Enjoy 71 Android 7-inch tablet in Europe, no details on US launch yet

Charles Gantt | Jan 22, 2013 12:31 PM CST

MSI, following suit of other hardware manufacturers this year, has released a new budget 7-inch class Android tablet that will cost roughly 129 euros ($172 USD). Named Enjoy 71, the new tablet is no slouch when it comes to performance while running Ice Cream Sandwich.

Under the hood, the Enjoy 71 sports a dual-core 1.5GHz ARM Cortex M9 8726 processor, Mali-400 GPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. A micro SD slot supporting up to 32GB cards, 2MP rear and 0.3MP front cameras, USB and HDMI ports round out the features.

The display is a 1024 x 600 IPS type that is on par with the Nexus 7. A 3200mAh battery gives the device a decent run-time as well as keeping things light weight. Unlike other cheap 7-inch tablets, the Enjoy 71 is housed in a metal frame. No information has been released on when the tablet will be available in the US.

LG's Optimus G Pro unveiled, features 5-inch 1080p display

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 22, 2013 4:30 AM CST

We just heard that LG's Optimus G will be finally reaching the rest of the world, which we think is a little late, but now we're hearing about a new device from LG which is slightly bigger, and slightly better.

The LG Optimus G Pro sports a 5-inch, 1080p-capable display and was unveiled by Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo. The 5-inch screen has a 440 pixel per inch (ppi) display, compared to the older version which featured a 4.7-inch display and 312 ppi. The market is beginning to get crowded with large, high-res smartphones, and I'm not hearing anyone complain.

LG set to roll out Optimus G across the world, is probably too late to matter

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 22, 2013 1:34 AM CST

LG have begun their 2013 smartphone campaign by announcing that their Optimus G handset will launch in 50 new countries. The Optimus G is currently available to people in the US, Canada, Korea and Japan, and has been for many months now.

It will first land in Singapore, then start floating over to other countries in the weeks following. This model of the Optimus G will sport LTE connectivity in any country that includes LTE. LG is pushing the fact that their LTE technology and knowledge is great, and hopes that the impact of launching the same device with the fastest network capabilities will be huge. The Optimus G will include Jelly Bean out of the box, with LG stating it will be running "the latest Jelly Bean OS and improved software".

Now let's get onto the serious talk - why? Why now LG? The also LG-made Nexus 4 is a phenomenal device, sporting virtually identical specs to the Optimus G sans LTE capabilities. I don't see how LG are going to make any impact with the Optimus G, as most retailers and telcos are going to be selling this at the usual pricing. Considering you can get a Nexus 4 for under $300... LG will have to make the Optimus G seriously cheap if they want it to be popular.

Nexus 7 overthrows iPad as number one selling tablet in Japan

Charles Gantt | Jan 17, 2013 10:09 AM CST

Google's Nexus 7 has topped the sales charts in Japan over the recent holiday season, effectively knocking the iPad out of the number one spot.

Nikkei market research firm BCN in reporting from a survey of 2,400 stores in Japan that Google's 7-inch tablet accounted for 44.4% of all tablet sales in the country. Sales of Apple tablets, including the iPad Mini, only made up 40.1% of tablet sales over the same time period. It is however, unclear if Apple stores were included in the survey.

Google's plan of offering a smaller, yet still very capable tablet is working better than expected. In Japan the Nexus 7 costs around 19,000 yen ($212 USD, while the iPad and iPad mini cost 42,000 yen ($470) and 28,800 yen ($322 USD) respectively. Market research firm IDC estimates a total of 3.6 million tablets were sold in Japan during 2012.

Windows Phone satisfaction higher than that of Android, still behind iPhone

Trace Hagan | Jan 15, 2013 6:55 PM CST

The iPhone remains the number one desired device in the United States, with half of American's planning to buy a new device in the next 90 days planning on getting an iPhone. That's down from 71 percent in September 2012, while Samsung's numbers have jumped from 13 percent to 21 percent, respectively.

More interestingly, 71 percent of iOS customers say they are "Very Satisfied," while only 53 percent of Windows Phone customers say they are. However, both groups are ahead of Android, which only sees 48 percent very satisfied. RIM lags behind with only 26 percent of its base being very satisfied.

Because of this, Windows Phone could very well see some great growth in the coming year, as long as those satisfied customers are getting the word out. The data above comes from 451 Research. They surveyed 4,061 people, with 88 percent of those being US-based.

RumorTT: iPhone 5S to be mass produced in March, launch in June/July

Trace Hagan | Jan 15, 2013 4:07 PM CST

Jeffries analyst Peter Misek has released another research report, which continues to assert that the iPhone 5S will be coming June or July. New to the report is the assertion that mass production of the next iPhone will begin in March. If this is the case, I would expect to start seeing leaks soon, and definitely by March, as long as Apple continues to be as leaky as they have been in the past.

Along with rumors and predictions for the iPhone 5S, Misek provides some insight into the possibility of a cheaper iPhone:

RumorTT: Samsung Galaxy S IV to feature 5-inch, 440PPI full HD screen

Trace Hagan | Jan 14, 2013 7:18 PM CST

Mark down yet another rumor for the Galaxy S IV, though this one has a bit more weight behind it. Anandtech, while in the demo room of Samsung's booth at CES, saw the following, seen in the picture below, which has caused a bit of a stir regarding the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S IV:

The roadmap pictured above has several clues that point to this screen being the one present in the Samsung Galaxy S IV. For instance, the release timeframe is that which has been rumored by several other sites. The other screens line up nicely with releases of other devices, as well.

The likely screen to be in the next Galaxy S device should be a 4.99-inch, 440PPI full HD screen. Of course, like all rumors, take this with a grain of salt.

Upcoming BlackBerry 10 mobile OS gets 15,000 apps after porting incentive event

Charles Gantt | Jan 14, 2013 1:02 PM CST

Two recent Research in Motion events has resulted in more than 15,000 apps being ported to the BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system according to RIM's vice president of developer relations Alec Saunders. The so called Port-A-Thons have been a huge success in helping jump starting RIM's app offerings.

Both the Android Port-A-Thon and Community Port-A-Thon were designed to entice developers to port their popular apps over to RIM's upcoming BlackBerry 10 OS for cash and prize incentives. In what has to be some sort of record, the events topped out at their goal within a mere 38 hours.

The events ran from January 11th to January 13th, and offered developers $100 for every app ported, with a maximum of 20 apps set per vendor. Vendors who submitted five or more apps were entered into a drawing for 1 of 100 BB10 Dev Alpha devices. Research in Motion CEO Thorsten Heins has promised that BlackBerry 10 will launch with at least 70,000 apps, which actually does not seem like such a far off goal now.

Lenovo announces K900 smartphone at CES 2013, will be available in China in April

Trace Hagan | Jan 9, 2013 5:27 AM CST

CES 2013 - Lenovo's new K900, just announced today, is the company's new flagship device and will be coming to China in April, and subsequently to other markets. It features a 5.5-inch IPS panel pumping out full HD resolution and is powered by an Intel Atom processor.

"With the K900, our team has broken down the key functions of the smartphone and redesigned them from the ground up," said Liu Jun, president, Mobile Internet Digital Home, and senior vice president, Lenovo. "Rather than focus on specifications that look good on a datasheet, we've zeroed in on what consumers want and proved that for smartphone users, top performance doesn't require a thick profile. The K900 is a game-changer that looks as good as it performs."

The thing weighs in at 162 grams, or 5.7 ounces, and stacks up at a mere 6.9mm. The camera is a 13MP Sony Exmor BSI sensor on the rear. Pricing for the device will be announced closer to the April launch. Alongside of this, Lenovo has announced its entire smartphone portfolio:

Panasonic expand their Toughpad range of enterprise-grade tablets

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 9, 2013 4:46 AM CST

CES 2013 - Panasonic have used the Consumer Electronics Show over in Las Vegas to announce that they're expanding their Toughpad range of tablets. If you're not familiar with the Panasonic Toughpad range of tablets, they're the enterprise-grade tablets from Panasonic - the expansion includes the Toughpad FZ-G1 which is a 10-inch tablet rocking Windows 8 Pro, and the second in line is the Toughpad JT-B1, which is an Android-based 7-inch tablet. Both tablets are available now.

The Windows 8-based Toughpad FZ-G1 has some impressive specs:

Gigabyte shows off S1185 tablet at CES 2013, has unique features and full Core experience

Trace Hagan | Jan 8, 2013 1:43 PM CST

CES 2013 - Gigabyte had a suite full of notebooks and tablets and the really cool one out of the group was the S1185. This tablet features a full 17 watt Core i5 processor, combined with a full HD IPS display. It comes with a smattering of ports and around five hours of battery life.

The really cool and unique feature that I haven't seen on any other tablets is the inclusion of a mouse-like touch sensor that works much the same way as the nubs in the middle of the keyboard. It also features two mouse buttons on the other side to allow for a nearly full mouse experience while not using the keyboard dock.

Speaking of the keyboard dock, the tablet has a dock that features both a keyboard and a touchpad, in case you need that precision that only comes from using a mouse. Really, the system is nearly a convertible notebook more than a tablet, though it will be just a tablet if that's what you want.

Acer confirms they're working on a "less than $150" Jelly Bean-powered, 7-inch tablet

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 7, 2013 8:44 PM CST

CES 2013 - Acer have confirmed the rumors that they were working on a 7-inch tablet that would be priced at around $99 - but it won't quite reach that sub-$100 price point unfortunately.

The tablet in question is the unreleased 7-inch Acer Iconia B1-A71, which will debut at "less than $150". We should expect a $149.99 price tag, which would make sense, as it's still "under $150". It will sport Android Jelly Bean as its mobile OS and the company describers the tablet as "the most premium experience at its price point".

Acer have confirmed some of the rumored specifications - and it does not look too bad at all - I'm loving the idea of microSD expansion for a sub-$150 tablet, nice work Acer!

iPhone 5 is the worst of the top smartphones according to latest Consumer Reports article

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 6, 2013 8:29 PM CST

Can't say I didn't see it coming - I pretty much said the same thing in my review, but it looks like Consumer Reports' latest conclusion is that the iPhone 5 is the worst of the top smartphones on the market right now. Yes - the worst.

In the February issue of the magazine, we'll get to see the full piece, but for now we have a simple photo above. With AT&T, LG's Optimus G ranks as number one and sitting on number two position is Samsung's Galaxy S III. In third position, we have the iPhone 5.

The same goes for Sprint, in the same order, but things change with T-Mobile - Samsung's Galaxy S III enjoys first position, HTC's One S pops up in position numero duo and in third position we have the 5.5-inch, just-released Samsung Galaxy Note II smartphone. Verizon is completely different again where two Motorola smartphones take out position one and two with the Droid Razr Maxx HD and Droid Razr HD respectively, and third position goes to the Galaxy S III from Samsung.

LeakedTT: Possible Samsung Galaxy IV photos leaked

Charles Gantt | Jan 4, 2013 8:00 AM CST

SamMobile, a website that reports on all things Samsung Mobile has released photos said to be of the next generation Galaxy smart phone. The photos reportedly come from an insider at Samsung, but at this time, we have no conformation as to if they are real or not.

The first noticeable feature is that the home button is missing, a feature that was popular on previous Samsung phones. It is also notable that the screen seems taller which could mean that the company may be moving the buttons to the screen. Moving the home buttons to the screen is something Google has been pushing since the release of ICS.

As with all "leaked" photos, we should take them with a grain of salt. Photos are easily altered and a good fake is not hard to come by. If by chance, this photo is the real deal, I am betting we see something official by Q2 of this year.
