Microsoft plans to bring in-game ads to free-to-play Xbox games

Derek Strickland | Apr 15, 2022 9:15 PM CDT

Microsoft is reportedly working on its own ad tech platform that would serve up advertisements in free-to-play Xbox games.

Microsoft plans to bring in-game ads to free-to-play Xbox games

Reports from Business Insider say that Microsoft wants to facilitate a platform to bring in-game ads to F2P Xbox games. Sources say Microsoft is currently in talks with ad tech specialists to build a new advertisement platform that will inject ads into specific games, namely free-to-play titles that may include the likes of Fortnite, Warzone, and Rocket League.

Although ad tech is one of the most lucrative aspects of mobile gaming, Microsoft's goal may be to boost visibility and engagement rather than make money. Sources say that Microsoft may not take a cut of the revenues generated from ads. Instead, game developers/publishers and advertisement agencies would share the proceeds.

Diablo II Resurrected sold more than Cyberpunk 2077 through 2021-2022

Derek Strickland | Apr 15, 2022 6:27 PM CDT

Cyberpunk 2077's controversy has significantly impacted sales to the point where other digital-only games are beating CD Projekt's latest release.

Diablo II Resurrected sold more than Cyberpunk 2077 through 2021-2022

Today Blizzard confirmed that Diablo II Resurrected has sold more than 5 million copies across PC and consoles. This is a stellar debut for a AAA project, especially a remaster/re-release. The game did so well that it actually beat Cyberpunk 2077, which moved about 4.3 million sales through 2021-2022. It's worth noting that CP2077 was discounted to just $5 multiple times during this period, and D2R was a digital-only release that had no physical in-store launch.

While the figure is certainly triumphant for Blizzard and Vicarious Visions, it's also a stark reminder of how devastating controversy can be for game sales. Cyberpunk 2077 launched to extreme hype that quickly switched to controversy due to terrible performance on PS4 and Xbox One. Sony actually pulled Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store for six months and Microsoft branded the game with a warning message on the Xbox store.

Cyberpunk 2077's first expansion is coming 3 years after launch

Derek Strickland | Apr 15, 2022 4:42 PM CDT

Cyberpunk 2077's first expansion won't release this year, CD Projekt RED has confirmed.

Cyberpunk 2077's first expansion is coming 3 years after launch

Cyberpunk 2077 is far by CD Projekt RED's fastest-selling game of all time. The sci-fi FPS launched into extreme hype and subsequent controversy with a massive 13.7 million copies sold within a month's time, and helped CD Projekt make more money than it ever has before. The trade-off was that CD Projekt essentially sold its reputation for upfront cash: The game performed so badly on PS4 and Xbox One that CDPR was vilified for months on end, with Sony even removing Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store for 6 months.

Ever since then, CDPR has been on a redemption arc and trying to make a big comeback. The recent Cyberpunk 2077 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S helped things along but the absence of substantial content has contributed to a dramatic drops in game sales.

Sean Murray hypes new game: 'it's so ambitious it's almost impossible'

Sean Murray has been talking up his new project for a while now. The game, which isn't No Man's Sky 2, has yet to be announced, but we first reported on it back in 2019.

Back then Murray used similar vernacular to describe the game, too: "We've got something else going on at the studio. It's exciting, and it's unfortunately going to be ambitious," said at the time.

CD Projekt abandons multiplayer in Cyberpunk 2077's RED Engine

Derek Strickland | Apr 14, 2022 5:33 PM CDT

CD Projekt RED confirms it has abandoned adding further multiplayer support into Cyberpunk 2077's RED Engine, and will use Unreal Engine 5 for multiplayer instead.

CD Projekt abandons multiplayer in Cyberpunk 2077's RED Engine

In a recent earnings report, CDPR says it is moving to Unreal Engine 5 for its multiplayer needs. This update may signal that Cyberpunk 2077's separate online multiplayer game has either been cancelled or is switching to UE5, which may be a painful process for developers. It could also indicate that the RED Engine has been fully optimized for CP2077's multiplayer project...which may be unlikely given the iterative nature of games development.

Cyberpunk 2077 game sales have dropped 70% since launch

Derek Strickland | Apr 14, 2022 3:56 PM CDT

Cyberpunk 2077's lifetime sales are now at 18 million+, confirming a significant decline in game sales throughout 2021.

Cyberpunk 2077 game sales have dropped 70% since launch

CD Projekt RED recently announced new Cyberpunk 2077 sales figures that fall in line with downward adjustments from analysts. The numbers show CP2077 is currently at 18 million+ sales, which means the game sold at least 4.3 million units throughout 2021. That's a 70% drop from the game's incredible 13.7 million launch sales made in December 2020.

The decline was triggered by the game's heated controversy that eventually led to CP2077 being removed from the PlayStation Store for six months due to disastrous performance on the base PlayStation 4. This significantly reduced overall sales, however CDPR has recognized most of its game unit sales from PC.

Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo make big changes to auto-renewal in UK

Prompted by a three-year investigation from government watchdog agency the Competition and Markets Authority, gaming's Big Three have all adjusted their auto-renewal policies in the United Kingdom.

Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo make big changes to auto-renewal in UK

At the behest of a CMA investigation started in 2019, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have changed subscription auto-renewal charging policies in the UK. Microsoft and Sony will no longer charge consumers indefinitely if they are not logging in and using associated services like Xbox Game Pass, Xbox LIVE, PlayStation Now, and PlayStation Plus.

Sony's policy sees the company contacting users and reminding them to turn off auto-billing, which will be manually turned off if users are inactive for 24 months.

The upcoming free next-gen release of The Witcher 3 has been pushed back to an undetermined period of time. "We have decided to have our in-house development team conduct the remaining work on the next-gen version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. We are currently evaluating the scope of work to be done and thus have to postpone Q2 release until further notice. We'll update you as soon as we can. Some weeks ago, Bandai Namco sent Mistborn and Stormlight Archive author Brandon Sanderson a special Elden Ring package that included a sword, a cloak, the game, and other collectibles. In the package was a note saying the publisher would like to collaborate with Sanderson on a new game, no doubt prompted by Elden Ring's amazingly successful input from George R.R. Martine.

"They are interested in perhaps doing something together. I am as well," Sanderson said in a recent podcast.

No Man Sky's new Outlaws update: pirate underworld, ship raids, more

Anthony Garreffa | Apr 13, 2022 9:05 AM CDT

No Man's Sky was quite the mess when it launched, but you've really, really got to give it to the team at Hello Games... they have delivered, and then delivered, and continue to deliver new content into No Man's Sky at a rate that other developers should admire. The latest, is called Outlaws.

No Man Sky's new Outlaws update: pirate underworld, ship raids, more

The new Outlaws update for No Man's Sky gives players missions where you can secure black market technology, and other goods from ships by being a pirate. It is a different element to the game, a completely different element, and brings Star Wars + Star Citizen + Sea of Thieves vibes into the game.

No Man Sky's new Outlaws update introduces a plethora of new things: outlaw space stations, cloth simulation (which looks great), an outlaw story, smuggling, solar ships, you can recruit wingmen, there are plentary frigates, improved space combat, forged passports, more ship slots, bounty missions, and planetary pirate raids. Who can complain about that, especially given it's free.

Australian gamers are the most stressed in Australia, and I agree LOL

Anthony Garreffa | Apr 13, 2022 3:00 AM CDT

Who are the most stressed people in Australia? That would be young, male, rebellious, and likely to be gamers according to a new analysis by media monitoring and social analytics platform Meltwater.

Australian gamers are the most stressed in Australia, and I agree LOL

The analysis comes from the profiles and social media posts of over 13,000 Australians who have talked about being stressed out on social media in 2021, with Twitch users and gamers the most stressed out of them all. 61% of them are male, with 30% of them aged 18-14 years old.

Melbourne seems to be a hot spot, and it's no wonder the way the Victorian government treated millions of Victorians throughout 2021 under the "leadership" of Dan Andrews... with 30% of those stressed gamers coming from Melbourne, Victoria. It's not just gamers that are stressed out in Australia, but also writers and members of the media... while political activists (which Meltwater adds are "mainly climate activists").

Xbox Series X/S SoC could move to 6nm for better yields

Derek Strickland | Apr 12, 2022 4:34 PM CDT

Microsoft is reportedly working on an Xbox Series X/S chip redesign that will help improve power efficiency and production readiness.

Xbox Series X/S SoC could move to 6nm for better yields

The Xbox Series X/S may get a chip refresh that boosts availability and supply, new reports from Brad Sams indicate. The new revision won't deliver more raw performance, though, and is expected to instead be on TSMC's N6 node which is actually part of its 7 nanometer family.

The next-gen Xbox duo currently use SoCs on TMSC's 7nm+ node, but the consoles are believed to move over to 6nm throughout 2022. Sony's PS5 is also expected to move to 6nm in an effort to maximize availability. The 6nm node offers multiple production benefits including better yields and quicker time-to-market, and the process of migrating chips from 7nm+ to 6nm is streamlined and easy.
