Sony backpedals a little on their No DRM announcement, says there will be development studio DRM
E3 2013 - Less than 18 hours ago, the gaming world was taken by storm when Sony's president Jack Tretton announced that the PlayStation 4 disk-based games can be freely given to friends and purchased on the used market. His exact words were "PlayStation 4 won't impose any new restrictions on used games" fast-forward by a little over half a day and the company seems to be taking a few steps back from that statement.
In an interview with Game Trailers, Tretton stated that while Sony's first party created games will not feature DRM, third-party games will be at the full control of their developers. This means that studios like EA, Activision, and others are fully allowed to prevent users from trading, sharing, or selling used games through one-time use activation keys.
"Well, I mean, we create the platform, we've certainly stated that our first-party games are not going to be doing that, but we welcome publishers and their business models to our platform," said Tretton. "The DRM decision is going to have to be answered by the third parties, it's not something we're going to control, or dictate, or mandate, or implement,"
Mad Catz officially announces Project M.O.J.O console, hardware specs inside
E3 2013 - Yesterday I posted the first images of Project M.O.J.O from Mad Catz, and promised to follow up with the hardware specs when I knew more. This morning Mad Catz has officially announced M.O.J.O at the E3 expo, and along with the announcement comes a list of hardware specifications.
Mad Catz M.O.J.O is an Android based micro-console the features a NVIDIA Tegra-4 processor, 16GB of storage, integrated Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth Smart 4.0. Mojo also features a pair of USB ports, HDMI out, and audio out as well as a microSD card slot for storage expansion.
Possibly the coolest addition to M.O.J.O is the inclusion of Mad Catz Xbox-like C.T.R.L.R Bluetooth gaming controller. Since the micro-console features a Tegra-4 it is possible that you could stream games from an NVIDIA-equipped PC, such as NVIDIA's project Shield does. Mad Catz has not yet released pricing but seeing as how it's up against $100 micro-console such as the OUYA, Game Stick and Gamepop, we are hoping that it will be similarly priced. Mad Catz says that we can expect to see M.O.J.O for sell this holiday season.
Sony troll Microsoft by showing you how easy it is to share games on the PS4
E3 2013 - So... Microsoft, I hope you're reading this and if you are, you'd better be sitting down with valium in one hand. Sony have just come out swinging, and rightly so, about how damn easy it is so share games on the PS4. In case you don't know already, the video below will follow you through the complicated procedure.
Um... yeah... that was a little easier than you thought, right? I laughed out loud at the video, as we all did here at TweakTown and as soon as I get back to Australia I'll be pre-ordering a PlayStation 4 for sure. Sony, you have impressed the world today, please don't stop doing so. Lots of love, the world of gamers and technology enthusiasts.

E2 2013 - Today EA Sports General Manager, Dean Richards, took the stage alongside UFC President, Dana White, to unveil the long anticipated EA Sports UFC for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. "With a talented and experienced team at the helm, and powered by EA SPORTS IGNITE, we've created a gameplay feature set for EA SPORTS UFC where every fighter, every strike, every takedown and submission will bring you inside the Octagon like no game ever has before."

FIFA 14 brings stadium and players to life on Xbox One and Playstation 4
E3 2013 - Possibly the hottest sports gaming franchise in the world right now is FIFA, and EA did not disappoint with its FIFA announcement at this afternoon's press conference at the E3 Expo. The company says that FIFA 14 will feel alive with players who think, moved and behave like world-class athletes.
This is all made possible through EA's IGNITE engine which is able to blend the best rendering, runtime physics, animation, intelligent, locomotion, and online systems into one powerful ecosystem to fuel the next generation of sports games.
EA says that for the first time ever, fans will feel the electricity of the living Stadium, and experience the majesty of the world's greatest soccer theaters. Players now have four times the decision-making ability in the current generation of players in the current FIFA, which enables each player to have "Pro Instincts" which EA defines as humanlike reactions, anticipation, and instincts.
EA announces Madden 25 at E3 press conference
E3 2013 - Electronic Arts has just announced that Madden NFL 25 will be coming to the next-generation consoles Xbox one, and PlayStation four. Madden NFL 25 is powered by EA Sports' new IGNITE engine and ushers in the next generation of sports games by delivering the smartest, most realistic, and detailed version of the game in its franchises history.
"We've never been more ready for a console transition than we are right now," said Cam Weber, General Manager of American Football for EA SPORTS. "The development team is crafting the most impressive Madden NFL game we've ever made, and I'm extremely excited for fans to get their hands on it for themselves when the Xbox One and PS4 launch."
Coupled with this announcement is the introduction of Adrian Peterson as the cover athlete for Madden NFL 25 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Peterson, the Minnesota Vikings running back, is a five-time Pro Bowler and the reigning NFL MVP. Last season Peterson came within 9 yards of breaking the NFL single-season rushing record set by Eric Dickerson.

EA shows off Battlefield 4 multiplayer footage at E3, makes CoD Ghost look like old school Counter Strike
E3 2013 - During the Microsoft and EA press conferences today at the E3 Expo, game developer DICE showed off its flagship FPS, Battlefield 4, in both single player and online multiplayer modes. As one of the biggest Battlefield fans in the world I cannot express in words the excitement I am feeling for Battlefield 4.
During the Microsoft event dice showcased "Angry Sea" a stunning display of how the new Sea warfare mode in battlefield for might play out. While during the EA press conference DICE showed off a 64 person online multiplayer demo that was played by 64 actual participants on stage. Dubbed the "Siege of Shanghai" it unveiled several new dynamics to the game. Players are now able to use elevators to reach various levels of buildings, and even level entire skyscrapers for a truly destructive environment.
First EA is bringing back Battlefield Commander Mode, which is similar to the Commander mode featured in Battlefield 2, but is much more dynamic and only gives you the resources available based on your team. Possibly one of the coolest features of Commander Mode is that it can be utilized through your touchscreen mobile device such as a tablet. In my opinion this brings in an entirely new dynamic, and is the new technology needed to take the Battlefield series to the next level.
Microsoft announces Forza 5 for Xbox One, utilizes cloud processing for unrivaled graphics and performance
E3 2013 - Microsoft and Turn 10 studios announced the next generation in simulation racing this morning. Forza 5 just may be the most bad ass racing game I have ever seen. The use of cloud processing and what is being called a Drivatar, you are always racing, even when you are not online.
The so-called Drivatar is an AI that learns your driving habits, your speed up and breaking habits, and even your crashing habits. It then races for you when you are not online. It is able to accomplish this through cloud processing which also gives the game graphics like no other game I have ever seen. The McLaren featured on the screen appeared to be a live video image and not a video game rendering.
Amazon launches new store front for independent game developers
This morning, Amazon has announced the launch of a new Indie Games Store that features more than 400 titles from at least 100 independent game developers. This new addition comes at a time when the Indie game market couldn't be any hotter with promotions like The Humble Bundle and Steam pushing indie games hard.
A representative from Amazon has told TweakTown that the new storefront has several features aimed at helping indie game developers get discovered, such as the Indie Gamers Choice Program, where to indie games go head-to-head for gamers' votes.
Another interesting feature is the Indie Spotlight which features Bios and Q&As that offer insight into the developers behind great independent games. A new Indie developer Spotlight will be released every Thursday and to kick things off Amazon has featured Mike Roush and Alex Neuse from Gaijin Games, the developers behind the BIT.TRIP series.

Halo: Spartan Assault arrives on Windows Phone and Windows 8
With the new Xbox One just around the corner and the upcoming Xbox TV series directed by Steven Spielberg announced, Halo fans have been eagerly awaiting news on the next installment in the Halo game series. Today were finding out that game is here... Well, sort of.
Unfortunately, the next Halo game is not for the Xbox One, but rather for Windows Phone and Windows 8 touch-enabled devices. Halo: Spartan Assault, developed by 343 Studios, appears to be a top-down RTS style shooter. While this is sure to disappoint some fans, it is only natural for Microsoft to try and capitalize on Halo's popularity by bringing a version to touchscreen devices.
"In a nutshell, it's a top-down twin stick arcade-style action shooter," explained Dan Ayoub, executive producer at 343 Industries. "Really, [its] a brand new way to play Halo." The game does appear to be a major part of the Halo timeline and fills in the gaps between Halo 3 and Halo 4. The game will also have a companion comic book series called Halo Initiation which further details the saga of Sarah Palmer.

Take Two Interactive looking to capitalize on used games too
There are a lot of mixed emotions over Microsoft announcing it will charge users to play used games. Some people see it as fair, while others are calling it a blatant ripoff. Now one of the large studios is speaking out.
Game developer Take Two is reportedly looking for their slice of the pie. In an interview with Game Spot, Take Two CEO, Strauss Zelnick said, "There's no question that if Microsoft has figured out a way to tax used games, then we should get paid, too. It's hard to imagine why they should and we shouldn't."
It's a little unclear whether he would like to take a percentage off the top of Microsoft's used game tax or if he thinks Take Two should charge a separate used game tax. In any event, Take Two does plan on doing the right thing and offering gamers incentives not to trade in their game such as offering free DLC 3 to 4 weeks after release.

All PlayStation 4 games will be required to support Remote Play with PS Vita
Sony's Shuhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Sutdios at Sony Computer Entertainment, has confirmed that all PlayStation 4 games will be required to support the Remote Play feature with the PlayStation Vita. This should be good news for the PlayStation Vita, which has suffered from slow sales.
The requirement was confirmed via a tweet by Yoshia, who added some details to the requirement: "It's true [they will be required to support Remote Play] unless the game requires specific hardware like the camera. It will be great to play PS4 games on PS Vita."
One of the main causes for slow PS Vita sales is its small library of games. By forcing Remote Play upon all PlayStation 4 games, Sony is effectively expanding the library of the Vita to include all the new PlayStation 4 games. We'll still have to see just how well its implemented, but what we've seen so far looks promising.
Microsoft says Xbox One's Kinect sensor can be completely turned off
Several groups have spoken out over privacy concerns and the always-on, always-listening Xbox One Kinect sensor. Microsoft has confirmed that the new Kinect sensor can be completely turned off. Fears were that a hacker could gain access to the system and use it to spy on the console's owners.
Thankfully, this shouldn't be the case. According to a Microsoft spokesperson, "It is not always watching or always listening." Microsoft unveiled quite a bit at their press conference, but neglected to spill all of the details, which has contributed to some of the rumors and concerns circulating the web.
The spokesperson added, "Yes, you can turn the system completely off. This would use no power and turn everything off. We'll share more details about how it all works later."

Mad Catz announces development of new gaming product line for Xbox One
Mad Catz has officially announced that it has started working with Microsoft on developing its new line of accessories for the Xbox One gaming console. The company has not released any information at this point, but did tell TweakTown that they will be showing off their "vision of next-gen gaming" at E3.
Darren Richardson, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mad Catz Interactive, Inc. said:

It's not just the German government, but now the Civil Liberties Australia privacy group is concerned over the Xbox One
A story I wrote on the German government concerned over the Xbox One being a monitoring device blew up over the last 24 hours, and it seems like they aren't the only ones that are worried about the always-watching, always-listening Xbox One.
Now the head of the Civil Liberties Australia has said that the Kinect voice and video features on the Xbox One make it a "surveillance device" in people's homes. Gizmodo's Luke Hopewell says "Come on. Really?!" as if people who think that are paranoid, but the Xbox One is an always-on, always listening and watching device. The Xbox One's Kinect sensor is infrared, which means blocking it with some tape won't work, and you can't block it's microphone at all.
This would mean you'd need to physically disconnect the Xbox One from the power at the wall, to get true privacy - but the question remains, are you being 'paranoid', or do you wholly trust Microsoft (or big brother) to not be listening and watching? To continue, the head of Civil Liberties Australia, Tim Vines, spoke with GamesFix about the new always-on Kinect, saying that users should be wary of what the Xbox One is actually capable of:
Sony employee responds 'we hear you' to users complaining about rumored PS4 DRM
A Sony employee has responded to rumors that the PlayStation 4 might implement some sort of DRM to prevent used games from being played by saying that the company hears the users. "Humbled by the outpouring of passionate PlayStation fans and their willingness to talk to us directly. Please know that we hear you," said Sony Computer Entertainment America's Nick Accordino.
Players want Sony to avoid a similar DRM scheme to that rumored to be implemented by Microsoft and the new Xbox One which requires gamers or retailers to pay an activation fee to play a used game. Sony has remained quite quiet about used games. "We are just now announcing the basic vision and strategy of PS4 and will have more information to share regarding used games later this year. But PlayStation has a long history of keeping its gamers happy and we won't make decisions that damage our relationship with them."
It sounds unlikely that PlayStation 4 would implement a DRM to prevent used games. In fact, both systems are confirmed to support used games, but the details are still unknown. We'll likely learn more from both Microsoft and Sony at E3 in just a few weeks. TweakTown will be there covering the event and you can expect to see lots of Xbox and PlayStation news.
