Samsung preps three new anti-glare Odyssey OLED gaming monitors, full unveil at CES 2024
Samsung has just teased three of its new Odyssey OLED gaming monitors ahead of CES 2024, with each of the new gaming monitors featuring anti-glare technology.
The first of which is the new Samsung Odyssey G9 (model G95SD) gaming monitor, with a huge 49-inch 32:9 aspect ratio panel with a native 5120 x 1440 resolution and 240Hz refresh rate. We've also got a 0.03ms response time, which means even the twitchiest of shooters will be sublime on this monitor.
Samsung is providing access to both of Samsung Smart TV platform and their cloud-based Gaming Hub on these displays, with a slim form factor to boot.
Vizio settles lawsuit for $3 million, says its 60Hz TVs had 120Hz 'effective refresh rate'
Vizio buyers filed a class action lawsuit all the way back in 2018, claiming the TV maker was selling its TVs with an "effective refresh rate" that is in reality, false advertising.
Fast forward to today, and the company has just paid out $3 million from a court case with the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles, which was meant to go back to trial in March 2024. Still, the company and its lawyers decided to settle instead.
The lawsuit read: "Vizio knows, or at the very least should know, that its television with 60Hz display panels have a refresh rate of 60 images per second and that backlight manipulation methods cannot and do not increase the effective Hz (refresh rate) of a television".
Neuchips will show off its revolutionary Raptor Gen AI accelerator at CES 2024
Neuchips will be unveiling its revolutionary new Raptor Gen AI accelerator and Evo PCIe accelerator card LLM products at CES 2024, according to a new press release issued by the company.
The upcoming Neuchips Raptor Gen AI accelerator was previously known as the N3000, with the new chip solution enabling enterprises to deploy large language models (LLMs) inference at a "fraction of the cost" of existing solutions. We will get the full skinny on Neuchips' new AI processor at CES 2024 next week.
Neuchips CEO Ken Lau said in the press release: "We are thrilled to unveil our Raptor chip and Evo card to the industry at CES 2024. Neuchips' solutions represent a massive leap in price to performance for natural language processing. With Neuchips, any organisation can now access the power of LLMs for a wide range of AI applications".
NVIDIA's new 'Skinny Joe' AI GPU teased, 700W TDP, designed for China with new US export rules
NVIDIA is reportedly working on a new AI GPU dubbed "Skinny Joe," which could be on its way to China with a 700W TDP attached.
The new NVIDIA "Skinny Joe" AI GPU has been spotted with a reference Dev_ID listing, just above the new NVIDIA L20 AI GPU and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 D graphics card. The GeForce RTX 4090 D is a new tweaked gaming GPU that uses the same AD102-based GPU as the GeForce RTX 4090 but tweaked to allow it into China with new US export restriction rules.
It would be funny if NVIDIA's new AI GPU for China were dubbed "Skinny Joe" because it has been cut down for the Joe Biden administration over all these US export restrictions. "Skinny Joe" could be named from it being a "skinny" aka cut-down version of a regular AI GPU like the H100, refreshed H200, or even the newer B100 AI GPU that's on the way in 2024.
AMD Ryzen 5 8600G desktop APU: 600MHz faster CPU, 900MHz faster integrated RDNA 3 GPU
AMD is preparing its new AM5 desktop APU series of chips, with the Ryzen 5 8600G APU teased with a faster CPU and much faster integrated GPU.
The new AMD Ryzen 5 8600G APU will be based on the Phoenix/Hawk Point silicon, where it will feature 6 cores and 12 threads based on the Zen 4 architecture that will boost up to 5.0GHz. On the GPU side of things, we have 12 RDNA 3-based Compute Units, which should offer some fantastic gaming performance for the new APU.
We're now seeing the new Ryzen 8000G series APUs being tested, with the Ryzen 5 8600G APU benchmarked inside of the MSI X670E ACE motherboard, a high-end motherboard that one wouldn't typically use with an APU.

CoolerMaster is close to revealing quite an interesting power supply with the new X-Silent Edge Platinum 1100W power supply, which is passively cooled and features the newer 12VHPWR power connector. Check it out:
We don't typically see fanless power supply designs of this power, where the new CoolerMaster X-Silent Edge Platinum 1100W is worlds above the usual 500W to 700W PSU designs that are passively cooled. The company hasn't been clear about power efficiency and power ratings just yet, but we should get those details at CES 2024 next week.

The new photo of Intel's alleged Core i9-14900KS processor has been posted on X by user "HXL". It will surprise users and gamers alike because, out of the box, the new Core i9-14900KS processor is expected to feature clock speeds of an incredible 6.2GHz, awesome.
In the photo, we see the SKU name -- Core i9-14900KS -- but the image hides the S-SPEC code. There's a QR code on the CPU that could allow someone to find out where this CPU came from. But, without that important S-SPEC code, we don't know how authentic this photo is. Considering Intel is only a week away from its CES 2024 keynote where the Core i9-14900KS should be officially announced, this feels kinda real to me.
Jeremy Renner returns to work one year after life-changing accident
Marvel's Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner is back on his feet and fully recovered, returning to work one year after almost losing his life.
On Jan 1st of this year, Renner was involved in a freak snow-plow accident that saw the beloved actor crushed by his snowcat while clearing snow near his home. His injuries were horrific, including 30 broken bones, and he had to undergo emergency surgery in the ICU to save his life.
Now, just one year since the accident, he has shared a post on his Instagram, originally posted by his Mayor Of Kingstown co-star Emma Laird, who tagged the actor and captioned "Back with my favorite guy next week." where Renner added, "It's happening."

SpaceX closes out 2023 with epic video of Starship booster testing
To celebrate the end of 2023 SpaceX has fired up Starship's Super Heavy Booster in its Flight 3 static fire test.
SpaceX has taken to its X account to share an awesome video of its Starship static fire test, with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk sharing an image of the test. The double test of both Starship and the Super Heavy booster comes ahead of Starship's third orbital test flight. The test involved the firing of all 33 Raptor engines on the Super Heavy Booster 10, along with the one Raptor engine on the Starship Ship 28 located atop the Super Heavy Booster.
The first two orbital launch attempts of Starship ended in a fiery explosion and an incompletion of the company's overall objective of sending a Starship upper around the Earth and splashdown in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. However, each launch has provided SpaceX with a lot of data used to improve the chances of the overall objective being achieved, as Flight 2 demonstrated a successful separation between Super Heavy and Starship, which wasn't achieved in Flight 1.

Watch waves crash ashore and the 7.6 magnitude earthquake rocking Japan
Japan has been struck by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake, killing at least 48 people as of the time of reporting, injuring dozens and causing widespread damage.
The region was struck with multiple earthquakes, each ranging in severity but the largest was recorded to have a magnitude of 7.6 and occurred at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles on the west coast of Japan's main island, around 186 miles from Tokyo. The epicenter of the quake was located on the peninsula, and the majority of the damage has been concentrated there with authorities now saying that they are at a race against time to recover any survivors buried under rubble and debris.
Notably, aftershocks can slam the same affected region within the next few days, according to Japan's meteorology agency, which also informed residents living near coastal areas to not return to their homes despite the preliminary tsunami warnings that stated waves could reach as high as 16 feet, per Japanese public broadcaster NHK TV. Below are a collection of videos posted to TikTok showcasing some of the damage the massive earthquake has caused.
NASA's Mars rover captured an entire Martian day from dawn to dusk
During its sleep in November, NASA's Mars rover captured some pretty awesome footage of the day/night cycle on the surface from the perspective of being on the surface of the Red Planet.
The legendary Curiosity rover, a car-sized robotic vehicle that has been exploring the Martian landscape in the Gale Crater and around Mount Sharp since 2012, went to sleep in November, as the Red Planet's orbit passed directly behind the Sun, temporarily severing communication for a brief period. These periods are called Mars solar conjunctions, and communications sent during this period can cause corruptions or errors, as the Sun interferes with the instructions.
NASA chose to stop communicating with the rovers during this period, but they still send back regular "health checks" to HQ. Curiosity didn't receive new instructions between November 11 and November 25, and the last task it received was to film its surroundings. Curiosity captured 12 hours' worth of snapshots over 24 hours, 37 minutes, and 22 seconds.

MrBeast told Elon Musk X can't afford to pay for his videos
Elon Musk has asked MrBeast, the world's biggest YouTuber, to post his videos on the platform X, which was formerly called Twitter.
X owner Elon Musk has responded to a tweet by MrBeast informing his audience that he had posted a new video, "I Spent 7 Days In Solitary Confinement". The original post by MrBeast was responded to by @DogeDesigner, asking the YouTuber to post his videos on X, to which Musk responded, "Yeah". Musk's post was then replied to by MrBeast, who wrote that his videos cost millions of dollars to make and even if they received billions of views on X, "it wouldn't fund a fraction of it."
However, MrBeast said he wasn't completely against posting his content on X as YouTube finished off his response by writing, "I'm down though to test stuff once monetization is really cranking!". Notably, X began its ad-sharing program last year, which Musk said amounted to $5 million for the first set of payouts.

Thanks to the efforts of the modding team at Daggerfall Workshop, modern gamers can now experience Daggerfall in all of its massive, dungeon-crawling glory.
Daggerfall Unity, an open source remake that's hailed as the best way to play the original TES sequel, is now finished. Bethesda RPG fans now have a unique experience to try out while waiting for The Elder Scrolls VI to drop.

AI is taking the world by storm, and the creative arts could be shaken up with innovative new tools and methodologies for asset creation. While the exact details are slim, video game developers may soon be armed with more efficient pipelines thanks to AI. Despite lofty promises from companies like Microsoft, who acquired new AI tools to help speed along the game dev process, the spectre of layoffs broods behind the scenes.
Game devs are worried that these new automation tools could eliminate even more jobs at a time when workers are being squeezed by a merciless cost-cutting market. The video games industry laid off over 6,000 workers throughout 2023.
SSD prices set to increase by 50% in 2024 so that NAND Flash suppliers return to profitability
A new report by TrendForce indicates that prices will increase dramatically for NAND Flash suppliers like Samsung, Kioxia, SK Hynix, and Micron to return to profitability. The price hike could be as high as 50% for NAND Flash (in the short term), leading to SSD prices increasing dramatically in 2024.
"Major domestic players in the NAND Flash industry indicate that NAND Flash suppliers, driven by the goal of profitability, will continue to aggressively raise prices," the report writes. "It is anticipated that prices will need to increase by over 40% once again for major manufacturers to break even."
Yeah, a 40% price hike to break even is quite something and a reminder that the NAND Flash industry is in a very precarious spot at the moment.
Retro Gaming Watch is a new smartwatch that flips open to deliver classic gaming goodness
The Retro Gaming Watch, a passion project from Jason Rogers, has blown past its Kickstarter funding target of $35,000 USD (as of writing, it's sitting on $56,286) and has an estimated delivery window of November 2024. As per its name, the Retro Gaming Watch is a smartwatch with a design focused on classic and retro video games from the 1980s.
Sporting a physical design (and orange color) reminiscent of the original Nintendo Game & Watch devices, the Retro Gaming Watch features a flip-open design to reveal a screen and controls. It's kind of like a Game Boy Advance SP that you can wear.
According to Jason, including an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), Arm Cortex M33 processor running at up to 160MHz, 1.5 MB of "fast RAM," and a dedicated 2D graphics processor is enough power to handle DOS games and console releases from the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. Plus, it's a smartwatch that connects and interacts with your smartphone for app and message interactions.

GIGABYTE plans 3 different GeForce RTX 4090 D cards, no factory OC included
NVIDIA's newly-tweaked GeForce RTX 4090 D is on its way to China as we speak, with AIB partner GIGABYTE preparing a few different RTX 4090 D models for the country.
In some new leaks, we're getting a gander at the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4090 D AERO, GeForce RTX 4090 D WINDFORCE, and the GeForce RTX 4090 D GAMING. All of them have the cut-down AD102 GPU, with the same 24GB of GDDR6X memory as the regular RTX 4090 non-D.
One of the big changes is that none of GIGABYTE's custom GeForce RTX 4090 D graphics cards have any form of factory overclocking, which would bump them over the US export restrictions. NVIDIA has reportedly hard-locked the 425W TDP on the RTX 4090 D, meaning that AIB partners only have a little bit of wiggle room when it comes to GPU clock speeds.
US President Joe Biden requested ASML to cancel shipments of its machines to China
US President Joe Biden's administration has pushed ASML to cancel shipments of some of its high-end chip-making machines into China, after new US export bans come into effect.
The news is coming from Bloomberg and the usual "people familiar with the matter," who said that the Dutch manufacturer had licenses to ship three of its new high-end deep ultraviolet lithography machines to Chinese firms this month, when new Dutch restrictions will begin taking effect.
US officials reached out to ASML, asking them to immediately stop the pre-scheduled shipments of their new machines to Chinese customers, once again, "according to people familiar with the matter". These people asked not to be identified because the discussions were confidential.
