NASA engineer claims discovery of new force of nature that may solve space travel

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Apr 23, 2024 8:01 PM CDT

A space startup has claimed to have discovered a breakthrough force of nature humans will use to propel objects for the next 1,000 years.

NASA engineer claims discovery of new force of nature that may solve space travel

The claims come from Exodus Propulsion Technologies, who's co-founder is Charles Buhler, a former NASA engineer that worked on a selection of legendary NASA programs such as the International Space Station (ISS), the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Space Shuttle. Additionally, he is the lead scientist and co-founder of NASA's Electrostatics and Surface Physics Laboratory at Kennedy Space Center and has a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics from Florida State University.

According to Buhler, who spoke to The Debrief, the startup presented its new findings of a breakthrough force that Buhler believes "will be this force that we will use to propel objects for the next 1,000 years... until the next thing comes." Adding, "There are rules that include conservation of energy, but if done correctly, one can generate forces unlike anything humankind has done before."

Samsung announces next-gen HBM4 memory: higher capacity, speeds, 3D packaging tech

Anthony Garreffa | Artificial Intelligence | Apr 23, 2024 7:11 PM CDT

Samsung has just announced that its next-generation HBM4 memory is in development, and will make its first appearance in 2025 with next-gen speeds, capacities, and features.

Samsung announces next-gen HBM4 memory: higher capacity, speeds, 3D packaging tech

The South Korean everything giant posted a blog explaining its next-gen HBM4 is in development, with its current HBM3E "Shinebolt" memory as its flagship HBM. HBM3E "Shinebolt" memory has 36GB capacities using 24Gb DRAM and up to 9.8Gbps bandwidth, with the memory technology supporting 12-Hi stacks and 2.5D advanced packaging technology.

HBM4 is Samsung's next step. If the company uses the same 24Gb modules, we should expect to see 16-Hi stacks. This will allow up to 256GB of HBM4 on future-gen AI GPUs with speeds that should hit 10Gbps or more. Samsung is surely cooking up denser DRAM modules, where we should see 24Gb+ that will drive total capacities of HBM4-powered AI GPUs through the roof.

Meta brings its Horizon OS to third-party VR headsets for the first time

Oliver Haslam | Extended Reality (XR) | Apr 23, 2024 4:30 PM CDT

It might be all too easy to think that the only VR headset that matters is somewhere in the Meta Quest lineup while the Apple Vision Pro is a different beast entirely. But Meta is looking to change things by expanding the world of virtual reality headsets to include those from other manufacturers - and it wants its Meta Horizon OS to be the software that powers it all.

Meta brings its Horizon OS to third-party VR headsets for the first time

In a press release detailing the move, Meta said that the Meta Horizon OS is what currently powers the Meta Quest headsets and that it combines the core technologies powering current mixed reality experiences. Now, it wants other companies to produce headsets that can run the same software.

As part of that new generation of hardware Meta sees the rising popularity of gaming, entertainment, and fitness experiences as a key factor in bringing other companies to the market. Some companies are already working on new devices that are powered by Meta Horizon OS, Meta says, with ASUS ROG at the top of the list. It's developing an all-new performance gaming headset, Meta says, adding that Lenovo is also going to develop mixed reality devices for production, learning, and entertainment.

So few people are buying the Apple Vision Pro, Apple has had to slash shipments

Oliver Haslam | Extended Reality (XR) | Apr 23, 2024 4:15 PM CDT

When Apple launched the Apple Vision Pro to the public in February it was the hottest thing in town, and it remained that way for a few weeks. But as is so often the case with these launches, once the dust settled, interest was already starting to wane. Now, a new report claims that demand for the high-end spatial computer has been so low that Apple has had to take drastic action.

So few people are buying the Apple Vision Pro, Apple has had to slash shipments

That action, according to the normally well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, comes in the form of cutting its 2024 shipments to somewhere between 400,000 and 450,000 units which is considerably down on the market consensus of anything up to 800,000 units - and potentially even more.

Kuo points out that Apple cut the orders even before launching the Apple Vision Pro in new markets. Right now it's only available in the United States and it's thought that demand has fallen so sharply in the United States that Apple is taking a more conservative view of the demand it can expect when the headset finally starts to ship to other countries.

Qualcomm's other Snapdragon X SoC is leaked, indicating how Plus CPU should compare to Elite

Darren Allan | Processors | Apr 23, 2024 4:00 PM CDT

Qualcomm is rumored to be revealing its Snapdragon X Plus chip at an event tomorrow, and it seems like this will indeed be happening, as the details of the SoC have just been leaked.

Qualcomm's other Snapdragon X SoC is leaked, indicating how Plus CPU should compare to Elite

VideoCardz has got hold of some apparent press slides detailing the three variants of the Snapdragon X Elite, as well as the Snapdragon X Plus silicon which will run alongside it (there'll just be one version of that - to begin with, anyway).

The rumor mill was correct in its assertion that the Snapdragon X Plus would be a 10-core SoC, cut down a pair of cores compared to the 12-core Elite CPU. At least assuming this leak is correct anyway - we must treat any pre-release spillage with some caution until the info is confirmed by Qualcomm, which will no doubt happen at the mentioned event tomorrow.

Apple is finally bringing the Calculator app to the iPad for the first time

Oliver Haslam | Mobile Devices | Apr 23, 2024 3:45 PM CDT

One of the first apps that appeared on the iPhone way back in 2007 was the Calculator app, a simple calculator that has so far not been made available on the iPad. It's pretty amazing that there has so far not been a calculator app, built by Apple, available on the iPad to date. But that could finally be about to change and it's thought that it might happen sooner rather than later.

Apple is finally bringing the Calculator app to the iPad for the first time

That's according to MacRumors, with a report detailing that after 14 years Apple is getting ready to bring the iPhone's Calculator app to the iPad. The report cites unnamed sources familiar with the matter, saying that the new Calculator app will be part of the iPadOS 18 software update.

This news follows a report from last week that some of Apple's upcoming AI features will include a new math feature linked to the Calculator app. That appears to be part of this new Calculator app news, but the original AppleInsider report does add extra context. We're told to expect a resizable window and a list of recent calculations and more.

Apple's iOS 18 AI features will run 'entirely on-device' and feature privacy and speed benefits

Oliver Haslam | Mobile Devices | Apr 23, 2024 3:30 PM CDT

As we get ever closer to the June WWDC event at Apple Park we're learning more and more about what we can expect from the big opening keynote. That keynote will be streamed online and has historically been when Apple previews all of its big new software updates. This year iOS 18 is expected to be at the forefront of those previews and we've been hearing a lot about potential new AI features. Now, a new report has added more color to Apple's plans for those features.

Apple's iOS 18 AI features will run 'entirely on-device' and feature privacy and speed benefits

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, writing in the weekly Power On newsletter, Apple's AI features will not use server-side components as is normally the way but rather go the other route, and run the large language models required to make them work on-device instead. That will mean that the features will use Apple's iPhone chips to process requests and handle data. As a comparison, chatbots like ChatGPT use servers that handle processing over the Internet.

Gurman says that Apple's large language model will run entirely on-device which will mean that there are some benefits to be noted. One of those benefits is that Apple will be able to boast performance improvements due to the lack of an internet request. With no need to send information to a server and then wait for a response, iPhone owners can expect a speedier experience than might otherwise be possible.

More evidence of a HomePod with a display appears with leaked part

Oliver Haslam | Audio | Apr 23, 2024 3:15 PM CDT

There have been rumors upon rumors of a new HomePod being in the works that will include a display for the very first time. We've seen images of what that could look like and we've even heard that Apple is reportedly testing a variety of different options. Now, a new leak may have given us another indication that such a HomePod really is on the way.

More evidence of a HomePod with a display appears with leaked part

The latest information comes via a post on the X social network which appears to show a display mounting for a HomePod that is similar to the one that we have on the current HomePod, but notably different. There are no volume button markings for example, and it's claimed that is because the whole display will be an LCD touchscreen similar to that of an iPad.

The image shared on X shows a large curved glass screen that would cover the entire surface of a HomePod and matches a previously leaked HomePod prototype, 9to5Mac notes.

ASUS fix for Intel Core i9 CPU crashing problem is tested - now we know how much it affects FPS

Darren Allan | Processors | Apr 23, 2024 3:00 PM CDT

Intel's 14th-gen and 13th-gen Core i9 CPUs have been hit by issues with crashing when running some PC games, and while a cure of sorts has been pushed out by one motherboard vendor, namely ASUS, we now know the extent of the catch with this fix.

You're unlikely to have missed this one, but just in case, the crashes for the mentioned top-end processors seem to be worse with games that use the Unreal Engine - but whatever the case, they're a definite pain, and at this point, widely reported.

Cue ASUS with a band aid that arrived in the form of a firmware update for its Intel Z790, B760, and H770 motherboards, which came packing a new 'Intel Baseline Profile.'

Sam Bankman-Fried signs deal to roll on all celebrities that shilled FTX

Jak Connor | Cryptocurrency & Mining | Apr 23, 2024 2:45 PM CDT

A group of FTX investors agreed to drop charges against the disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) in exchange for his devout cooperation in gathering information on celebrities who took money from FTX to endorse the company.

Sam Bankman-Fried signs deal to roll on all celebrities that shilled FTX

SBF's cooperation will reduce his civil liabilities, which are plenty, and come after his 25-year prison sentence, where he was found guilty on seven counts of fraud, embezzlement, and criminal conspiracy. Now, FTX investors are looking for as much information as SBF can provide on the seemingly long list of celebrities who took money from FTX to promote the brand. Celebrities such as Tom Brady, Larry David, Steph Curry, Shaquille O'Neal, and supermodel Gisele Bundchen immediately come to mind, but there are undoubtedly others that have been initially forgotten.

Notably, SBF isn't the only one that is rolling on celebrities as other former FTX officials like Nishad Singh, Gary Wang, and Caroline Ellison, former girlfriend of SBF, have also all agreed to cooperate with prosecutors and provide any information they can, which they reportedly already have begun to.

Apple confirms May 7 'Let Loose' special event with new iPads expected

Oliver Haslam | Mobile Devices | Apr 23, 2024 2:15 PM CDT

After months of rumors and guesswork, Apple has now finally announced that it will hold a special event on May 7. Dubbed the "Let Loose"m event, Apple is yet to confirm exactly what the new event will entail but the rumors suggest that we will see a number of new iPads and accessories.

Apple confirms May 7 'Let Loose' special event with new iPads expected

The event itself will be a virtual one and take place at 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET. Apple says that people will be able to watch along online but there appears to be no suggestion of any kind of in-person event this time around.

In terms of what the event is expected to see Apple announce, the OLED iPad Pro will no doubt be the biggest new unveiling. If everything goes the way that we've been told to expect, the event will see a refreshed 11-inch model joined by a refreshed 12.9-inch model, while both will sport upgraded OLED displays. Those displays should offer improved colors and blacks while saving power, too. On the inside, we're expecting Apple to bring the M3 chip to the iPad lineup for the very first time while there is also a suggestion that the FaceTime camera will move to the side of the display, away from the top.

The Apple iPhone 16 could feature capacitive buttons like those rumored for the iPhone 15

Oliver Haslam | Mobile Devices | Apr 23, 2024 2:00 PM CDT

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro might have only been on sale since September of 2023, but there is already a lot to look forward to when their replacements are released this coming fall. If Apple sticks to its usual release pattern we can expect it to make the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro available to the public this coming September, and that means that we only have a few short months left to wait. What's more, we're starting to hear more and more about what those new iPhones might have to offer potential buyers.

The Apple iPhone 16 could feature capacitive buttons like those rumored for the iPhone 15

According to a new report by Economic Daily News, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, or ASE, has won an order to provide system-in-package, or SIP, components that will be used to integrate with new Taptic Engines on the new iPhones. Taptic Engines are Apple's vibration motors and it's now thought that there will be two additional motors used in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. The new Taptic Engines will reportedly be placed at the edges of the iPhones, one on each side. The reason? It's thought that Apple is finally going to bring capacitive buttons to the iPhone.

The prospect of capacitive buttons on an iPhone isn't new, of course. We first heard that Apple was going to use capacitive buttons on the iPhone 15, replacing the clicky power and volume buttons. That never happened, but this latest report suggests that Apple has revisited that approach and will instead bring capacitive power and volume buttons to the iPhone 16 lineup.

BioMatrix introduces PoY, the world's first UBI token with 60 years Issuance Commitment

Sponsored Content | Cryptocurrency & Mining | Apr 23, 2024 1:55 PM CDT

Entering the digital future, I have had the chance to explore BioMatrix's cutting-edge blockchain platform. As a technology enthusiast, the idea of the Proof of You (PoY) token caught my attention at first, especially with its pledge to "distribute wealth in a fair and equitable manner."

BioMatrix introduces PoY, the world's first UBI token with 60 years Issuance Commitment

The selling point of the PoY token is that it is not just a digital asset, but it is an integral part of the company's Universal Basic Income (UBI) distribution strategy, which is designed to connect the user's biological identity to blockchain technology - an important development that could help bridge financial divides around the world.

At its recent launch in Dubai, the BioMatrix platform showcased its potential to redefine the UBI landscape. Like many other secure platforms, BioMatrix is built with user empowerment in mind, and leverages advanced AI and blockchain technology to facilitate its ecosystem growth and expansion. However, the key difference that sets BioMatrix apart from other UBI platforms is using newer cryptography solutions like Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKP) to protect user privacy and security.

IRS to use AI like 'night vision goggles' to find American's dodging tax

Jak Connor | Artificial Intelligence | Apr 23, 2024 1:36 PM CDT

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is planning on implementing artificial intelligence-powered systems into its workflow, according to IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel.

IRS to use AI like 'night vision goggles' to find American's dodging tax

The statements made by the CEO of the IRS were made on April 17 at the UiPath on Tour: Public Sector Event in Washington, D.C, where Werfel explained that the IRS is looking into implementing AI in two ways: one to assist American taxpayers and the other and tools that IRS agents can use to discover undetected tax cheats.

The CEO described the potential of AI tools to the IRS as "night vision goggles" that would enable the agency to "unlock and see and spot the issues" in case of the "most complicated, largest taxpayers" across the US. As for AI being implemented in a way that would help Americans, the IRS CEO said the agency is developing an IRS chatbot that taxpayers will be able to interact with virtually and ask questions regarding the taxation process.

Amazon allegedly broke its own copyright laws to keep itself in the AI race

Jak Connor | Artificial Intelligence | Apr 23, 2024 1:20 PM CDT

A newly filed lawsuit against Amazon alleges the company broke its own copyright policy to prevent it from falling out the global generative artificial intelligence race that numerous big tech companies are embarking on.

Amazon allegedly broke its own copyright laws to keep itself in the AI race

The lawsuit was filed last week in a Los Angeles state court by Dr Viviane Ghaderi, an AI researcher, who claims to have worked in Amazon's Alexa and Large Language Model (LLM) departments. Ghaderi claims she was promoted several times in both of these departments, but was allegedly demoted and eventually fired following her return back from maternity leave.

Ghaderi has placed many allegations against Amazon, claiming the company has discriminated against her, is inherently sexist towards her, retaliation, wrongful termination, and many other claims. More specifically, Ghaderi says when she returned to work, she was tasked with an LLM project, the underlying technology powering impressive tools such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, and her role was flagging instances of the LLM violating Amazon's own copyright policy.

Apple Vision Pro called 'game-changer' by surgeon that used it during surgery

Jak Connor | Extended Reality (XR) | Apr 23, 2024 1:04 PM CDT

The Apple Vision Pro captured the internet briefly when it finally became available to the public, but then it seemingly quietened down in the consumer market as many users found the headset lacked critical features.

Apple Vision Pro called 'game-changer' by surgeon that used it during surgery

However, that doesn't mean it isn't being used in the business, or commercial space, which is exactly what a surgeon from Brazil has done. According to reports, doctor Bruno Gobbato used a Vision Pro headset during a shoulder arthroscopy surgery, which the surgeon said aided him in his process throughout the operation.

The above video shows the surgeon using the Vision Pro to display a live camera feed of the camera that has been inserted into the shoulder joint. The heads-up display of the Vision Pro also provided the surgeon with X-rays, notes, and additional information that originally wasn't readily available by simply looking up to a region of space in the operating room.

BBC, Amazon, and HBO Max unknowingly hired North Korean's breaking US sanctions

Jak Connor | Business, Financial & Legal | Apr 23, 2024 12:48 PM CDT

A cloud server discovered by NK Internet blog author Nick Roy in 2023 has led to a potential subcontracting digital paper trail to the BBC, Amazon, and HBO Max.

BBC, Amazon, and HBO Max unknowingly hired North Korean's breaking US sanctions

According to recent reports, think tank Stimson Center dived through the seemingly inactive cloud server, discovering many instructions for animation work and logs by artists on what was completed on any given day. These files were uploaded by individuals, which Stimson Center's Martin Williams wrote was evidence of a "go-between" server used for relaying information "between the production companies and the animators."

Mandiant, a cyber security firm owned by Google, searched through the activity logs and found that many of the IP addresses from the individuals accessing the server were masked by a VPN, but instructions for content were frequently written in Chinese and translated to Korean. Content discovered on the server was from season 3 of Amazon's "Invincible", Cartoon Network and HBO Max's "Iyanu, Child of Wonder", and files from the BBC's Octonauts.

GUNNAR has unveiled its latest glasses, which were made in collaboration with Amazon Studios for the new Fallout TV show.

GUNNAR releases limited-edition Fallout TV show glasses with Amazon

Titled the "Fallout Vault 33," glasses are a limited-edition run of glasses that are heavily inspired by Bethesda's Fallout franchise and Amazon Studios' recent hit TV show "Fallout," which is based on the games. The glasses are smudge-resistant and anti-reflective and feature a retro-futuristic square style that is made of stainless steel and nylon. The glasses have flexible spring hinges and the classic GUNNAR patented lens technology that is designed to block out harmful blue light and 100% UV.

These limited-edition glasses feature an olive/gunmetal colored frame and an epic Fallout collectors case to store them in. Within the case are a microfiber pouch and a microfiber cleaning cloth, both of which are also collector's items. It should be noted that these glasses are officially licensed by Amazon Studios, and I've been told they have exceeded GUNNAR's expectations, nearly selling out completely.
