PS5 Pro GPU explained by architect Mark Cerny: Hybrid GPU with multi-generational RDNA tech

Today Sony surprise dropped a 37-minute technical seminar with Mark Cerny aimed at clarifying some the PS5 Pro's new magical upscaling sorcery. In the video, Cerny discussed the PS5 Pro's GPU in length, confirming the processor is built on multi-generational RDNA tech from AMD--alongside a custom ML solution.
Sony splashed parts of AMD's RDNA 2 and 3 architectures into the Pro's GPU, a combination referred to as RDNA 2.x, but had to be selective to ensure Pro games were still compatible with the base PS5 (which runs on RDNA 2.0). Cerny gives examples of RDNA 3 usage with the Pro's boosted primitive processing capabilities.

Today Sony Interactive Entertainment dropped a surprise video of PlayStation console architect Mark Cerny discussing the PS5 Pro in a deep dive seminar. Cerny goes through everything, including how exactly the PS5 Pro's GPU works, why it was chosen, as well as PSSR details. But towards the end of the video, Cerny teased what's next for PlayStation.
Sony and AMD are working closely together to develop new hardware and architecture solutions optimized specifically for ML and AI. Here's what Cerny said during the presentation about Amethyst:
Apple could release its foldable iPad slightly earlier than expected
Apple has long been rumored to be working on a foldable device that will shake up the market, with rumors previously indicating the company is developing a foldable iPhone and foldable iPad.
Both of these rumored devices have recently been discussed in several reports, with most of these reports accurately stating Apple is still many years away from either of these products being released, but they will emerge slightly sooner than expected. According to the Display Supply Chain Consultants, analysts that evaluate display-based products, Apple will be releasing its foldable iPhone in 2026, which runs contrary to previous rumors citing a purported leaked Apple roadmap that stated the foldable iPhone would arrive in 2028.
As for the foldable tablet, the Display Supply Chain Consultants describes the device as a foldable iPad Pro in the report, which would make sense when tying in previous leaks from reliable Apple insider and Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who wrote Apple's foldable iPad will be approximately the size of two iPad Pros side-by-side. Additionally, it is rumored that Apple will be throwing its all into the new foldable iPad, which is why it has gained the "Pro" moniker. Moreover, the folding technology is relatively new, so it makes sense for Apple's foldable device to fall under its "Pro" product catalog.

MSI unveils the successor to one of the ultimate gaming monitors of 2024
One of the best gaming monitors of 2024 was MSI's MPG 321URX, a beastly 4K gaming monitor that sports a 240Hz refresh rate, and a 0.03ms response time across a 32-inch OLED panel. A truly gorgeous, top-shelf gaming experience when paired with a graphics card capable of maxing out those specifications.
MSI has decided to refresh that monitor by announcing the MPG 322URX, the company's new top-of-the-line gaming monitor that has come equipped with DisplayPort 2.1a technology. Notably, the main difference between the 321URX and the new 322URX is the upgraded DisplayPorts (2.1a/1.4a), which provides owners with a large increase in bandwidth. More specifically, DisplayPort 2.1a supports up to 80 Gbps total bandwidth (UHBR20) for uncompressed video streams.
Additionally, the upgraded DisplayPort means more support for higher resolutions, frame rates, and color depths. For example, DisplayPort 2.1a supports 8K resolution at 60Hz with HDR and 10-bit color. As for high refresh rate gaming, DisplayPort 2.1a supports 4K at 240Hz without chroma subsampling or compression. Moreover, for those big on HDR, the upgraded port means greater support for HDR10+ and other advanced HDR formats. As for the 322URX, it still has all of the glorious specifications from its predecessor, such as the 4K resolution, gorgeous OLED panel, three-year warranty, 240Hz refresh rate, 0.03ms response time, and a slick aesthetic.
NASA astronaut shares incredible video of SpaceX Dragon capsule returning to Earth
SpaceX's Dragon capsule was recently undocked from the International Space Station (ISS), and the moment was captured by a NASA astronaut who was situated at a peculiar angle.
The Dragon capsule undocking from the International Space Station is simply business as usual for both NASA and SpaceX, with the recent footage capturing the 31st commercial resupply the company has performed for NASA. The launch to the ISS from SpaceX involved carrying 2,700 kilograms (5,952 lb) of supplies for the crew aboard the floating laboratory, along with experiments and other various miscellaneous items that are useful in zero gravity.
As for the undocking video, the Dragon capsule was carrying all of the "spoils from our research," according to NASA astronaut Don Pettit, who posted the video to his personal X account. The time-lapse showcases an incredible angle of the Dragon capsule departing the ISS, showcasing the trajectory of its journey back down to Earth, where it splashdowned off the coast of Florida on Tuesday, December 17.

The impressive thing for me from LG's new QNED evo (QNED9M) is that it features True Wireless 4K technology, something that was previously exclusive to the top-tier OLED evo (M-series) from last year, is now available on the QNED evo lineup. This means that you can enjoy 4K content wirelessly, without compromising on picture quality or experiencing delays, with LG saying this lets you move "beyond the limitations of traditional wired connections".

SK hynix has developed the new PS1012 U.2 high-capacity SSD for AI data centers, with an astonishing 61TB drive based on QLC tech, with transfer speed of up to 32 GT/s with PCIe 5.0.
The company announced it has completed the development of its high-capacity SSD product "PS1012 U.2" designed for AI data centers, tapping QLC technology that helps enable high capacity, becoming the industry standard. SK hynix has developed a 61TB SSD using this technology, and introduced it to the market.
SK hynix's new PS1012 doubles the bandwidth to the SSD thanks to the newer PCIe Gen5 standard over the Gen4 standard, offering 32 GT/s with sequential read performance of 13GB/sec (13,000MB/sec) which is double that of the Gen4 SSDs before it.
Apple is finally fixing the fatal flaws the Magic Mouse is suffering from
Apple's Magic Mouse is one of the most confusing products the company has ever released, with it being received at the time as a questionable Apple-esc take on a mouse that totally missed the mark.
Despite having some impressive gesture features, Apple's Magic Mouse was mostly poorly received by fans of the company, with many criticizing its odd design that Apple touted as ergonomic - yet these ergonomics were hard to grasp as there wasn't much mouse to hold onto. The strange design of the mouse meant users didn't have any mouse to rest the middle of their hands on, which could lead to discomfort over longer sessions.
The second fatal flaw of the Magic Mouse was the charging port, which is located on the flat underside of the mouse, meaning it is impossible to use the mouse while charging it. These two fatal flaws were fixed in the second-generation Magic Mouse, or even in the third-generation Magic Mouse, which was a refresh of the second-generation model, but instead came with a USB-C port instead of a Lightning port like its predecessors.
TSMC's first fab in Kumamoto, Japan secures initial orders from Sony and Denso
The first Japanese wafer fab built by TSMC in Kumamoto will start mass production before the end of 2024, with its first batch of orders supplied to Sony and Denso.
In a new report from the Commercial Times, we're learning that TSMC said on December 17 that the construction progress of its new Japanese fab is "still in progress" and that the previously announced mass production schedule remains unchanged.
Yuichi Horita, the president of TSMC's Japanese subsidiary -- Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM) said that the Kumamoto Factory 1 had entered the final preparation stage for mass production, emphasizing that TSMC's first production line in Japan "will be of the same quality as the Taiwanese factory".
BBC complains to Apple after its AI generates misleading headline about Luigi Mangione
Apple has been caught in hot water after its new generative AI software produced a factually incorrect headline that was discovered by the BBC.
The BBC recently published a report stating it officially complained to Apple after an Apple Intelligence-generated headline of a BBC news story that was pushed out to iPhones last week contained misinformation. The headline stated Luigi Mangione, the man who was arrested for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thomson, shot himself. The AI-powered summary was discovered by the BBC, which contacted Apple to raise the concern and "fix the problem".
Notably, Apple's AI that generated the summary was otherwise correct in the other information it provided, such as South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol having his office raided by police, and the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria. However, the BBC isn't the only publication to have suffered from Apple's AI spitting out headlines that are factually incorrect, as three articles on different topics from the New York Times were distributed in one notification, and one of those headlines stated the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu was "arrested".
NVIDIA GB200 AI server mass production, peak shipments could be delayed until Q2 or Q3 2025
NVIDIA's new GB200 rack-mounted AI servers are still experiencing issues, with a new report suggesting that the supply chain requires more time for optimization and adjustment, and it could see mass production and peak shipments delayed until Q2 or even Q3 2025.
In a new report from TrendForce, their latest report says that the supply chain needs more time for GB200 rack servers, and that it's mostly because of the higher design specifications of the GB200 rack, including its requirement for high-speed interconnect interfaces, and thermal design power (TDP), which "significantly exceed market norms".
TrendForce is now projecting that mass production and peak shipments of NVIDIA GB200 rack servers are "unlikely to occur until between Q2 and Q3 of 2025". The NVIDIA GB rack series includes the GB200 and new GB300 models, which feature even more complex tech and higher production costs.
NVIDIA unveils affordable AI supercomputer that fits in the palm of a hand
NVIDIA has taken to its website to unveil its latest compact generative AI system that's designed to provide a development platform from commercial AI developers to mere hobbyists looking to explore the capabilities of generative AI.
NVIDIA, the company powering the mass push into AI-infused software, has announced the new NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano Super Developer Kit, which provides as much as a 1.7x leap in generative AI interference performance, along with a 70% increase in performance to 67 INT8 TOPS. Additionally, NVIDIA has increased the Jetson Orin Nano Super's memory bandwidth by as much as 50% compared to its predecessor, bringing its total memory bandwidth to 102GB/s.
Moreover, if you are upset because you already own a Jetson Orin Nano and now want the performance of the Super variant, NVIDIA can get you partially the way there as the company explains in its announcement the software updates to the Super variant will benefit performance on the Jetson Orin Nano. NVIDIA writes the developer kit consists of a Jetson Orin Nano 8GB system-on-module (SoM), along with a reference carrier board designed for prototyping AI applications. More specifically, the SoM features an NVIDIA Ampere-based architecture GPU, a 6-core Arm CPU, and support for up to four cameras.
Ubisoft plans to gut the 'Far Cry formula' from its new titles Far Cry 7 and Maverick
A new report from Insider Gaming, which has previously correctly predicted industry moves by Ubisoft, has stated the AAA developer plans on changing up the Far Cry formula with its two new titles.
The report states that Ubisoft currently has two new Far Cry games in development, Far Cry 7 and Maverick. Insider Gaming states both titles were originally under the codename Talisker, but then they were split, with its next mainline title, Far Cry 7, initially being under the codename Blackbird and the other title, which is an extraction-based shooter, being separated by the moniker Maverick. More specifically, Insider Gaming reports that both of these upcoming Far Cry games are set to move away from the traditional Far Cry formula.
Firstly, Maverick is rumored to introduce players to the Alaskan wilderness and pit them against each other, along with the native animals and harsh climate. As for Blackbird, or the next mainline Far Cry game, Ubisoft will let players assume the role of an individual who has to save his family from being kidnapped by a conspiracy cult that is performing hallucinogenic experiments on animals and children.

The new Acer Predator Orion 7000 desktop PCs will be featuring Intel's new Core Ultra 200 series "Arrow Lake" processors, with each of the systems teased powered by the Core Ultra 7 265KF processor. The two new desktop PCs also feature 32GB of DDR5 memory (2 x 16GB) sticks with support for up to 128GB of memory, dual 1TB SSDs (no mention of Gen4 or Gen5) and feature two different GPUs.

Elon Musk talks to TSMC boss, wants a (huge) stable supply of chips for Tesla's Optimus robots
TSMC chairman C.C. Wei has said that he talked with the world's richest man -- SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI boss Elon Musk -- and that Elon said the future was robots, not cars, and that his biggest concern was the stable supply of chips for the Optimus robots.
The TSMC boss was at Taiwan's 12th National Science and Technology Conference, where he talked to Elon, with Wei promising that TSMC could deliver as long as he is willing to pay. Wei told conference attendees that multi-purpose robots are the AI wave of the future, and that's it a huge opportunity for Taiwan, because making them requires precision, joining the worlds of semiconductor technology with software.
Wei also said that drones, energy conservation, reducing carbon emissions and natural resource management are also important key parts for Taiwan and its continued AI efforts. Wei also pointed out that Taiwan has excellent design companies as well as chip manufacturing and packaging + testing plans, as well as advanced semiconductors and precision machinery.

In the last 24 hours, people have started noticing the product code "GZ302EA" that shows search results on Google, with the ROG Flow Z13 gaming tablet listed by multiple retailers with some early specifications to drool over. AMD's new Ryzen AI Max+ 395 chip is the 16-core, 32-thread flagship "Strix Halo" APU which will power the flagship ASUS ROG Flow 13 gaming tablet, but there's also a 12-core Strix Halo variant (the Ryzen AI Max 390) that's been spotted.
The new ASUS ROG Flow Z13 gaming tablet will feature AMD's new Strix Halo APU, with a 13.4-inch panel and a super-smooth 180Hz refresh rate (over the 165Hz on the current ROG Flow). There's also LPDDR5X memory support, with the Strix Halo APU supporting 8000 MT/s speeds by default, over the LPDDR5 (non-X) memory in the current ROG Flow.
Sony buyout wouldn't benefit Kadokawa Corp, Japanese analyst says
Sony has confirmed its intent to buy manga and anime multimedia giant Kadokawa Corp., but one Japanese analyst warns against the effects of this multimedia consolidation.
Sony could purchase Kadokawa in a sweeping merger that would combine Sony's existing movies, games, TV, film and music businesses with Kadokawa's billion-dollar manga and anime empire. PwC analyst Suzuki Takahiro believes Sony's motivations are centered around acquiring Kadokawa's formidable trove of IPs.
"Sony is no longer the consumer electronics manufacturer it was in the past, and entertainment is becoming its core business. However, creating IP (intellectual property) is not its forte. I think they are aiming to incorporate Kadokawa's content and strengthen it," Takahiro told Yahoo News Japan.

The GeForce RTX 50 Series leaks are coming in thick and fast, and with this latest one from Acer (via Videocardz), it looks like the GeForce RTX 5080 and GeForce RTX 5090 will both be in full force at CES 2025 in January.
This time, the leaks surround the pre-built Acer Predator Orion 7000 desktop PCs, which include Intel's latest Core Ultra 200 Series processors. With access to leaked data sheets for new Predator Orion 7000 variants with GeForce RTX 50 Series graphics, we've got more confirmation on the memory configuration for the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090.
As rumored and previously leaked, the GeForce RTX 5090 will feature 32GB of GDDR7 memory, while the GeForce RTX 5080 will feature 16GB of GDDR7 memory.
