Dell unveils 24-inch 1440p 165Hz G-Sync gaming monitor

Dell has just unveiled its new 24-inch gaming monitor, known as the S2417DG. Dell's new S2417DG is a 24-inch gaming display with a native resolution of 2560x1440, and a maximum supported refresh rate of 165Hz, as well as support for NVIDIA's G-Sync technology.

Dell says that with support for G-Sync, as well as the refresh rate support between 30Hz and 165Hz will help gamers enjoy a great gaming experience. Dell teases: "No screen tearing, no stuttering and no ghost images means there is nothing to get in the way of your performance".

The new S2417DG includes various gaming profiles that let gamers quickly set optimal settings for RTS, FPS and RTG games. We have DisplayPort 1.2a, HDMI 1.4, four USB 3.0 ports, and tilt, swivel, and pivot support. Dell's new S2417DG has 1000:1 contrast ratio, 350cd/m2 brightness, 170/160 viewing angles, 16.7 million color depth, and standard sRGB gamut.

MSI's next-gen gaming laptops feature 120Hz display

MSI have been teasing their next-gen gaming notebooks, which will be ready for high-end gaming as well as everything VR. Inside, it can be configured with up to Intel's new Core i7 6820HK processor, and we should feature NVIDIA's next-gen GeForce GTX 10 series GPU.

MSI's upcoming GT72VR Dominator gaming laptop stood out for me, as it will reportedly feature a 120Hz display, which MSI says is "the fastest mobile display". This excites me beyond belief, as it'll be the first gaming laptop with a super-fast 120Hz refresh rate on a gaming notebook.

There will also be a 4K IPS panel offering, with MSI promising 100% Adobe RGB. Inside, MSI will include upgraded audio technologies with sound from Dynaudio, and the GT83VR and GT73VR Titan gaming laptops featuring Nahimic 2 and Audio Boost 2 technologies.

Reboot 'Ghostbusters' film headed for a $70m loss

After all the pre-release posturing about sexism and equality, bad trailers and plain old screwing with a classic, the rebooted 'Ghostbusters' film plain sucked. It seemed audiences agreed too, and that's put in jeopardy the whole cinematic universe that Sony Pictures is developing, with projections the film is headed for at least a $70 million loss for the studio.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is bracing for a big write down for the film, which has slumped with a $180 million dollar gross across the world, barely more than its $144 million budget. Worse, the film needed to gross $300 million to just break even once marketing costs were taken into account. But Sony have shot back saying all is not as bad as it's being made out to be, with a rep saying "With multiple revenue streams, including consumer products, gaming, location-based entertainment, continued international rollout, and huge third-party promotional partnerships that mitigated costs, the bottom line, even before co-financing, is not remotely close to that number".

Still, it's become crystal clear that movie audiences haven't embraced the rebooted series in the way that they should have, if it was handled with a lot more care, alongside a competent director, a stronger script and a different cast). A truly missed opportunity.

Chrome will block all Flash content starting next month

Flash's swift decline is imminent, as Google is preparing to block all content that uses the software in its Chrome browser. Larger Flash content has been blocked in the popular browser for awhile now, Google is extending its coverage to the smaller stuff too. Tacking platforms and page analytics are among that, and can slow down browsing and drain battery just the same.

It's taken awhile to provide coverage for small Flash elements because until recently, there was no way to detect them.

Google isn't taking a hard stance on Flash quite yet though: if you want to enable Flash objects on a given page (like Twitch and Facebook, which require it), you'll still be able to. Eventually, such an option won't exist.

Second gen Panasonic UltraHD Blu-ray player on the way

While Panasonic is only one of three companies to have launched hardware to support the 4K UltraHD Blu-ray format thus far, that hasn't stopped the Japanese multinational from announcing a cheaper, second generation player to combat the entry-level X-Box One S which is currently the cheapest player on the market.

According to What Hi-Fi, Panasonic's DMP-UB90 will join the first model DMP-UB900 with nearly identical specifications for nearly half the price when it hits Japan later this month for 70,000 yen (around $700 USD). The new player only drops the analogue audio outputs and THX certification from its older sibling - which is no real loss.

Meanwhile, Sony are expected to (finally) announce their first UltraHD Blu-ray in the form of the PlayStation Neo (whatever it ends up being called) at next month's PlayStation meeting in New York.

Galaxy Note 7 display capable of over 1000 nits

Samsung is killing it with the pre-release marketing of its upcoming Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, and it's not 'just because' - the Galaxy Note 7 looks like a beast, and has the specs and display to match.

According to DisplayMate, the display on the Galaxy Note 7 is a new level of awesome, capable of over 1000 nits of brightness. The company says the Galaxy Note 7 display hits its maximum brightness if it's left in automatic mode, but when it's outside, the brightness is boosted to new levels in order for you to see the display outside.

Samsung's Galaxy S7 hits a peak brightness of 855 nits, which was the best at the time. The Galaxy Note 7 on the other hand, reaches 1048 nits in the same conditions. The contrast ratio is also higher in those situations, too. Disabling the auto brightness setting on the Galaxy Note 7 has the display pushing 639 nits compared to 440 nits on the Galaxy S7.

Google wants to make your bathroom more intelligent

Google has applied for a patent on bathroom devices that monitor your health. Among them: a pressure and electrical-sensing mat, a color-sensing bathroom mirror, an ultrasonic bathtub, a pressure-sensing toilet seat, and a radar-field device.

Some monitor your body by sending out sound waves, electromagnetic waves, electrical signals, and various forms of radiation, among other techniques, the data from which could be sent to health professionals. The devices can monitor your blood pressure and various parts of your body to determine specific health issues, like an impaired knee or overworked heart.

This isn't Google's first foray into the medical technology field: previously it explored Google Lens, a device that monitored sugar levels via an electronic eye lens.

JDI's new 5.5-inch mobile LCD with barely-there bezels

We all hate the bezels on our smartphones, with some worse than others, and now JDI has unveiled something that could really change things on future smartphones.

JDI has introduced a new 5.5-inch 1080p LCD that has super-slim, barely-there bezels, on all four edges. So not just as the edges like some smartphones, but all four edges of JDI's new LCD have incredibly thin bezels which the company says are made from a combination of high-density wiring and "new processing and module assembly technologies".

JDI is hoping to mass produce the screens in March 2017, so we should expect some smartphone manufacturers to take notice when this happens. While this might sound great, remember that you still need to fix a camera, microphone and a few other trinkets around the LCD display, no matter what.

3D 'Force Awakens' collectors Blu-ray coming in Nov

'Star Wars' fans who bemoaned the lack of 3D when the much anticipated 'Force Awakens' Blu-ray hit store shelves just four months ago have been promised a pre-Christmas treat.

According to Blu-ray.com, Disney have announced the November release of a 4 disc collectors edition of the 'Star Wars' sequel, which includes the film on separate 2D Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray and DVD discs, alongside a disc of extra features including the previously released features alongside new featurettes which look at specific behind the scene areas, including sound effects, cosutume design and weaponry, additional deleted scenes and a full-length audio commentary with director J.J. Abrams.

The collectors edition Blu-ray will hit stores on November 9 in Australia, and on the 15th in the United States.

Disney to launch sports streaming network, invests $1bn

Disney is buying one-third of revered streaming company BAM Tech -- which powers NHL.tv and MLB.tv -- at a cost of $1 billion.

The company's long-term plan with this move is to launch an ESPN-branded subscription-based streaming network (emphasis on branded, because it won't include current ESPN programming, but rather, separate, ESPN-type channels).

The network makes the most of any for Disney and it's already formed ESPN deals with cable and satellite companies, so understandably, it doesn't want to mess up a good thing. However, should the whole cordcutting thing really take off, Disney can easily shift its content.
