Samsung launching 31.5-inch 4K 120Hz gaming displays in July

Anthony Garreffa | May 18, 2018 12:29 AM CDT

Samsung is going to dominate the monitor market once again this year, with a brief tease of a new 49-inch 5120x1440 display with a refresh rate of 120Hz... but what about 4K?

Samsung launching 31.5-inch 4K 120Hz gaming displays in July

We're already expecting both ASUS and Acer to release 4K 120Hz gaming displays in the coming months, but from what we've seen and heard so far they'll be relatively small at just 27 inches. Samsung's purported 4K 120Hz gaming display is a much larger 31.5-inch panel, which is suited to 3840x2160 much better than can-you-even-see-it 27 inches at 4K.

Samsung won't be the first with a 4K 120Hz monitor, as that will go to Wasabi Mango and the UHD430 which is a gloriously huge 43-inch 4K 120Hz monitor that currently sells on eBay for $1399. I'd expect Samsung's 31.5-inch 4K 120Hz monitor to be more expensive, but we won't know exact pricing until next month where I'm sure the company will show it off during Computex 2018 with an expected July 2018 release.

Samsung working on 49-inch 5120x1440 120Hz gaming display

Anthony Garreffa | May 17, 2018 11:30 PM CDT

Samsung is making what could be one of the beastiest gaming displays ever made, with TFT Central reporting that the company is doubling down on UltraWide monitors, powering them with their own Quantum Dot technology.

Samsung working on 49-inch 5120x1440 120Hz gaming display

We should expect Samsung to unveil a new 49-inch 1800R-curved 32:9 display with a resolution that will massage your retinas at 5120x1440, with a 120Hz refresh rate to match. Samsung already dominates the super-ultra-wide market with their 49-inch CHG90 (which I'm using right this very moment) but the native 3840x1080 is a let down, especially when compared to the 5120x1440 which has 77% more pixels.

Samsung is reportedly also working on a 43.4-inch panel with a native 3840x1200 resolution and 144Hz refresh rate, while 3440x1440 displays will be bumped up to 144Hz in the very near future.

Surface Hub 2: 50.5-inch 4K, costs 1/4 price of previous-gen

Anthony Garreffa | May 15, 2018 10:50 PM CDT

Microsoft has just announced its new Surface Hub 2, something that will launch next year for companies, educational users, and board meeting use.

Surface Hub 2: 50.5-inch 4K, costs 1/4 price of previous-gen

The new Surface Hub 2 has secret insides for now, with the previous-gen unit packing an Intel Core i7 in the huge 84-inch version, while the 55-inch Surface Hub was powered by a Core i5 processor. The new Surface Hub 2 only comes in a 50.5-inch variant, with an unknown processor at this point.

Microsoft is keeping the 3840 x 2160 native resolution, with its camera also shooting 4K as well. The big selling point here is that the new Surface Hub 2 rocks an awesome hinge that will let people move it into landscape or portrait, depending on their needs. As for pricing, Microsoft has decided to keep Surface Hub 2 real cheap with it selling for $5000 or so, down from the holy-crap price of $22,000 for the original Surface Hub.

Wasabi Mango UHD430: 43-inch 4K 120Hz monitor, costs $1399

Anthony Garreffa | May 12, 2018 6:54 AM CDT

The holy grail of gaming monitors would definitely have to be 4K 120Hz and while the closest we've got officially is the tease of 4K 144Hz G-Sync monitors from NVIDIA, ASUS, and Acer... it looks like it has early competition from Wasabi Mango.

Wasabi Mango UHD430: 43-inch 4K 120Hz monitor, costs $1399

Wasabi Mango is a Korean display manufacturer that have released their new UHD430 monitor that has a native 3840 x 2160 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. The monitor requires dual DP 1.4 ports to hit 4K at 120Hz, buti you'll also get HDR goodness for that as well. There are also 3 x HDMI 2.0 ports, 1 x Toslink optical audio output, and a USB port.

The delicious Wasabi Mango UHD430 is available on eBay right now for $1399.

ASUS ROG Swift 4K 144Hz G-Sync monitor listed for over $3000

Anthony Garreffa | May 10, 2018 7:50 AM CDT

The hottest gaming monitor on the market is still in the making, but with each passing month we're getting closer to its release and now we're seeing a new listing for the ASUS ROG Swift PG27UQ.

ASUS ROG Swift 4K 144Hz G-Sync monitor listed for over $3000

ASUS might not show much off in its product name, but the ROG Swift PG27UQ is a 27-inch 4K 144Hz monitor with NVIDIA's G-Sync technology. The monitor is listed on sicomputers.nl for a huge $3000, but this will give you HDR10, 1000 nits of brightness, direct LED backlighting, and 384 zones with quantum dot film. We are all here for 3840 x 2160 at 144Hz, though... right?!

We should expect NVIDIA to fully unveil and have them showcased during Computex 2018 which is only a few weeks away, and I'm sure ASUS and Acer will be showing them off in force during the show.

Samsung's new 34-foot Onyx: portable 4K cinema screens

Anthony Garreffa | Apr 25, 2018 7:41 PM CDT

Samsung has just announced its new range of 4K LED theatrical screens that it has branded Onyx, promising cinema goers, directors and studio bosses to enjoy pure blacks on-screen.

Samsung's new 34-foot Onyx: portable 4K cinema screens

The new Samsung Onyx comes in at a large 34-feet with full 4096 x 2160 resolution that provides a much higher-end image with improved colors than the normal 2K projection. Onyx can pump out 2K, 4K, 3D, and HDR with Samsung unveiling the first US locations for Onyx screens at Pacific Theatres Winnetka in Chatsworth, California, just north of Los Angeles.

Samsung is aiming at a few different markets with its Onyx screen, as it is really just a super massive 4K TV that will get built into not just movie theater walls, but other places as well. When it's used in a cinema, it rocks a custom JBL sound system that ensures people will get out-of-the-box audio. The company hopes to see it used for dine-in theatrical experiences, eSports and live gaming events, and more.

ASUS/Acer 4K 144Hz G-Sync monitors listed: costs over $3000

Anthony Garreffa | Apr 12, 2018 7:35 PM CDT

NVIDIA will propel themselves into a totally new era of enthusiast gaming displays with their new 4K 144Hz G-Sync HDR displays coming out this year, something they've been working closely with ASUS and Acer on.

ASUS/Acer 4K 144Hz G-Sync monitors listed: costs over $3000

These new displays will arrive as 27-inch super-powered gaming displays with a native 4K resolution, super-quick 144Hz refresh rate, HDR technology and dashed with G-Sync. We have heard prices of somewhere in the $1500 to $2000 range, but according to some European retail listings for the new 4K 144Hz displays we could be looking at over $3000 for first adopters.

Acer's upcoming Predator X27 seems the cheapest so far with a converted price of between $2500 and $3068 while ASUS has the even more premium side of things covered with their ROG Swift PG27UQ that is priced between $2500 and $3607. Incredible price, but these monitors will be the most premium (lots of) money can buy.

NVIDIA's next-gen 4K 144Hz displays to launch in April

Anthony Garreffa | Mar 21, 2018 5:58 PM CDT

I exclusively revealed a few weeks ago that NVIDIA would be unveiling their new GeForce GTX 20 series graphics cards during the GPU Technology Conference (GTC) that kicks off next week... and now we have more proof of that actually happening.

NVIDIA's next-gen 4K 144Hz displays to launch in April

NVIDIA teased during GDC this week that ASUS and Acer will be releasing their next-gen 4K 144Hz G-Sync HDR gaming displays, in the form of the Acer Predator X27 and ASUS ROG Swift PG27UQ. Both of these displays rock a native 3840 x 2160 resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, G-Sync technology, and HDR.

NVIDIA said that G-Sync HDR-capable displays will ship by fiscal Q1 2018 that ends on April 29, but without graphics cards that can run 4K 144Hz on the market, what will NVIDIA do? The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti isn't good enough for single-card 4K 60FPS in most AAA games without turning details down, so we'll need some next-gen GPUs... right? ;)

ASUS/Acer 4K 144Hz G-Sync monitors should arrive in Q3 2018

Anthony Garreffa | Mar 14, 2018 12:13 AM CDT

I'm sure you remember those delicious high-res/high refresh rate gaming displays that NVIDIA teased last year, both rocking NVIDIA's variable refresh rate technology: G-Sync.

ASUS/Acer 4K 144Hz G-Sync monitors should arrive in Q3 2018

Well, a new report teases that we might see these new 4K 144Hz and 3440x1440 200Hz gaming displays from ASUS and Acer in Q3 2018, in the same period that NVIDIA is expected to throw its next-gen Turing GPU architecture into mass production. They will join NVIDIA's upcoming Big Format Gaming Display (BFGD) that will see 65-inch 4K 120Hz HDR TVs with G-Sync enter the living room.

TFT Central says that the ASUS PG27UQ and Acer X27 will be released in Q3 2018, with both of these displays pushing 4K 144Hz, while the UltraWide 3440x1440 200Hz displays in the ASUS PG35VQ and Acer X35 will arrive in Q4 2018.

AU Optronics: 65/85-inch 8K TVs will arrive later this year

Anthony Garreffa | Feb 22, 2018 9:37 PM CST

8K TVs are coming much sooner than expected, with AU Optronics promising it will be shipping 8K TVs in sizes that will range between 65-85 inches in the first half of this year.

AU Optronics: 65/85-inch 8K TVs will arrive later this year

DigiTimes reports that AUO's video products business group, Liao Wei-lun, said: "Shipments of TV panels in 65-inch and above sizes will be a major focus of AUO as global sales of 65- and 70-inch TVs and display products are expected to grow 40% and 50% on year, respectively, in 2018".

ASUS debuts a bezel-free monitor kit at CES 2018

Steven Bassiri | Jan 14, 2018 7:33 PM CST

CES 2018 - With multi-monitor gaming setups, bezels are like a wrench tossed into the gaming experience.

ASUS debuts a bezel-free monitor kit at CES 2018

Instead of one large slightly curved display, you get three displays with easy to notice separation. Some vendors have tried to minimize the width of bezels, but separation is still visible. Now there is a solution to this issue.

As you can see on the left, ASUS is using three monitors with typical bezel sizes. However, we if take a look at the image on the right, we find that the bezel has totally disappeared. ASUS will sell the kit soon, and it is adjustable so you can use it on different monitors. However, you need the monitors to be at the same exact height.

Samsung launches 55-inch 4K digital whiteboard

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 9, 2018 7:36 PM CST

CES 2018 - Samsung has announced its new Flip digital whiteboard, or as it likes to refer to it - an "interactive digital flip chart", because that's so much better.

Samsung launches 55-inch 4K digital whiteboard

Samsung's new Flip is a 55-inch 4K display that acts as a digital whiteboard, allowing for up to 4 people to draw and/or add content at once, whether that's from using the touchscreen or a dual-sided pen. The display can be flipped vertically, which is perfect for details and lists, and if you want it in a permanent state it can be wall-mounted.

If you want to connect devices up to the Samsung Flip digital whiteboard, you can go wireless or through USB so that you can connect to a smartphone or PC.

ASUS' bezel-free kit seamlessly links three displays

Derek Strickland | Jan 8, 2018 3:24 PM CST

CES 2018 - Gaming hardware maker ASUS has revealed a nifty new solution for bezels in multi-monitor setups.

ASUS' bezel-free kit seamlessly links three displays

Bezels can be a problem if you're trying to play, say, a racing game like Project Cars on three monitors. While most gamers probably get used to the interrupted visuals posed by the bezel frames on the outside of displays, wouldn't it be great if there was a way to remove them? ASUS has an answer: lens strips.

As Engadget notes, ASUS' new Bezel-free Kit uses light refraction to pull the image in an apparently-seamless way across the bezel points where the monitors meet. The lens strips need to be mounted at a 130-degree angle, or as ASUS puts it, "the angle determined through extensive testing to provide the best viewing experience."

Westinghouse shows budget-friendly 43-inch 4K TV for $350

CES 2018 - Westinghouse makes a splash in the affordable 4K UHDTV market with budget-friendly 43-inch sets.

Westinghouse shows budget-friendly 43-inch 4K TV for $350

4K UHDTV adoption is set to climb throughout 2018 and 2019 as more and more consumers buy into the tech for gaming, streaming, and other interactive mediums, but one of the biggest hurdles is price. Now companies like Westinghouse are making 4K TVs more accessible with a line of televisions that won't break your wallet. At CES 2018 in Las Vegas, Westinghouse showed off a 43-inch 4K UHDTV that costs just $350.

As you'd expect the set doesn't have HDR capabilities (too bad!), but it does come with smart-enabled capability with Android and Wi-Fi built right in--so it's a good solution for Google Cast and other options to cast from your wireless devices and such. Westinghouse's 43-inch 4K TV also has a 120Hz refresh rate, but don't expect outstanding visuals without HDR tech (it's a budget set after all).

NVIDIA teases 65-inch 4K HDR TV with 120Hz G-Sync support

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 8, 2018 2:44 AM CST

CES 2018 - NVIDIA has just struck me directly in the heart, unveiling something that they're calling Big Format Gaming Displays (BFGDs) at CES 2018.

NVIDIA teases 65-inch 4K HDR TV with 120Hz G-Sync support

These beasts are gigantic 65-inch TVs that will be made with NVIDIA partners like Acer, ASUS, and HP as 4K HDR displays that are really, just gigantic G-Sync gaming displays. NVIDIA will be building Shield directly into the TV, meaning there are thousands of Android-powered apps that people will be able to use on the 4K 120Hz HDR TVs, with Google Assistant to boot.

These new TVs sound insane, but what's happening inside of them? Matt Wuebbling, head of GeForce marketing for NVIDIA explains: "PC gamers expect high performance and instant response times, but, until now, they've been largely limited to traditional desktop displays. BFGDs change that. With NVIDIA's latest technology built into these new displays, PC gamers can now experience their favorite titles in all the low-latency glory they deserve".

Samsung's new 8K TV features AI, can upscale video to 8K

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 8, 2018 1:49 AM CST

CES 2018 - Samsung is going all-out on the TV front with a few new 8K TVs to show off, with the company introducing the world's first modular TV, coming in at a huge 146 inches.

Samsung's new 8K TV features AI, can upscale video to 8K

But it is the new 8K-capable Q9S that also has my attention, which isn't quite as big as LG's impressive 88-inch 4K OLED in terms of size, but with its 85-inch panel at 8K, I'd take the 7680x4320 resolution of 3840x2160.

Samsung's new flagship 8K TV uses a "proprietary algorithm" that will upscale lower-res video up to their Super Hi-Vision screen at 8K. There's also AI inside, which Samsung says will be able to "learn from itself" over time, which is scary and awesome, all mixed together.

The Wall: Samsung's huge new 146-inch modular TV is real

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 8, 2018 12:26 AM CST

CES 2018 - Samsung has just unveiled one of the world's largest TVs, and the world's first modular TV with 'The Wall'. The Wall is a huge 146-inch TV from Samsung that uses microLED technology, sharing some of the benefits of OLED technology.

The Wall: Samsung's huge new 146-inch modular TV is real

Each individual microscopic LED is capable of emitting its own light, meaning no backlight is needed, with the MicroLED technology providing gorgeous black and beautiful colors, something that you normally look toward OLED TVs for.

Samsung's new 146-inch TV is bezel-less, with the company describing it as "module-based". Samsung says this will let customers create a TV size for their needs, but hasn't said how this will work. This means you could have it at its maximum 146 inches, or small down to 100 inches if you wanted it in a specific room.
