NVIDIA announces the Tegra X1, a mobile powerhouse

CES 2015 - Our first press conference of the Consumer Electronics Show 2015 here in the awesome but cold Las Vegas was with NVIDIA, where the company showed off its latest Tegra X1 mobile processor. The company is calling this the "first mobile superchip" and it really, really is.

The Tegra X1 is based off NVIDIA's more than impressive Maxwell architecture, the same silicon that powers the desktop GPUs in the form of the GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 980 cards. We have 256 Maxwell GPU cores, and an 8-core 64-bit capable CPU, too. This is all capable of pushing out an insane 4K at 60FPS with 10-bit H.265/VP9.

When it comes to performance, the Tegra X1 is killing it with NVIDIA's own benchmark slides.

Chris Smith | Storage | Jan 5, 2015 12:21 AM CST

Seagate release their wireless storage devices for $130

Chris Smith | Storage | Jan 4, 2015 11:57 PM CST

Available in five colors and coming sometime early this February, Seagate's new wireless 500GB external drive series will set you back only $130 on release.

If you're looking for a handy storage and backup solution, without the need for plugging in various mobile and laptop devices, this kind of storage solution may suit you perfectly. However, to keep the costs down Seagate have had to cut some corners.

Without focusing too much on the negative, if you're looking to use the wired feature on this device only a USB 2.0 option is available - something that's pretty disappointing in today's age of technology, but understandable in order to keep the costs low.

First 'Star Wars' stand alone film to begin production next month?

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Jan 4, 2015 11:24 PM CST

Mid last year, it was announced that 'Godzilla' director Gareth Edwards would helm the next 'Star Wars' film; a stand alone entry to be released between this year's 'The Force Awakens' and the as yet untitled 'Episode VIII' in 2017.

According to JediNews, filming is set to begin next month at London's Pinewood studio, with sets already assembled. Whilst this might seem a tad early, remember that the film will be released next December, so this timeline seems sensible. If true, we can certainly expect a lot of news in the coming months.

Lenovo slim down and speed up their Thinkpad range thanks to Broadwell

Chris Smith | Laptops | Jan 4, 2015 11:02 PM CST

CES 2015 - Lenovo's Carbon and T450 models have received a special upgrade, in the form of Intel's new Broadwell processors. They're also being treated with new wireless technologies including 802.11ac Wi-Fi and 4G LTE, smaller sizing and a longer battery life.

Their ThinkPad Carbon X1 now measures at only 17.7 millimeters thick and comes in at 1.3 kilograms. Often described as perfectly suited for business purposes, this line of laptops will feature the fifth-generation Intel processor offerings and a 10 - 11 hour battery life. According to Steve Gilbert, the director of worldwide product marketing for Lenovo's commercial group, Intel's i-series chips were used over their lower-power consuming M series because "our business customers continue to demand the best from our products."

This model will now include its internal SSD connected through PCI-Express 3.0 technology, supporting up to 512GB of total storage. Further to this, you'll be able to throw in up to 8GB or DDR3 RAM, display your work at a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution and connect to your networks via 802.11ac Wi-Fi and LTE mobile broadband. More features include a lackluster 720p webcam and a price of $1,249 - set for shipping later this month.

Another look at Apple's purported iPad Pro turns up

We're getting a closer look at the purported iPad Pro from Apple, the company's upcoming (but not confirmed) iPad Pro. We should expect the iPad Pro to rock a 12.2-inch display, and might arrive to us as the "iPad Air Plus".

The leak is coming from an internal sketch released by a Foxconn employee, teasing what Apple's new iPad might look like. Not only would it arrive with a 12.2-inch screen, but we should also see a 12.9-inch version, both of which should feature Apple's A8X processor - but possibly the A9 processor - 2GB of RAM and a Touch ID sensor.

We've heard recently that Apple was experiencing manufacturing problems, but according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will not start production of the larger iPad until Q2 2015, as it is all-systems-go with production of the iPhone 6 Plus. We should hopefully hear more on the larger, and hopefully better iPad in the near future.

Mangstor reveals the 2.7TB MX6000, the world's fastest NVMe PCIe SSD

Typical SSDs have a volatile DRAM cache, which requires power-fail circuitry and capacitors to protect the cache. The MX6000 utilizes a next-generation 64MB MRAM cache from Everspin, which provides built-in write persistence for all data, simplifying design and firmware. The MX6000 boasts a beast of an FPGA with 100 cores running at 500MHz to manage the flash. The card utilizes eMLC to provide a robust 8-10 DWPD threshold that will satisfy the most demanding workloads.

Mangstor is already providing PCIe SSDs to OEMs, but they are also expanding to SME/SMB environments and the branded market. Look to these pages soon for competitive performance analysis of the product alongside other leading solutions in the PCIe SSD category of our IT/Datacenter section.

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jan 4, 2015 5:33 PM CST

In a case of 'why didn't Valve do this sooner' the creator of Half-Life has just unveiled a new in-game FPS counter that is baked into Steam. Gamers across the world, myself included, will be loving this new feature which allows for a much easier way of keeping an eye of your frame rate in-game, without using third-party software.

If you want to use the new in-game FPS counter, you're going to need to opt into the new Steam beta, something that can be done through the Steam client's settings menu. The beta of Steam is pretty damn stable these days, with options like this placed inside of Steam to play around with them before it hits the final version.

The in-game FPS counter is enabled by going to the in-game menu, and then clicking the box to add the in-game FPS counter - simple!

SATA-IO displays 8TB HGST Ultrastar He8 at Storage Visions 2015

Paul Alcorn | IT/Datacenter & Super Computing | Jan 4, 2015 5:05 PM CST

Storage Visions 2015 - At the SATA-IO booth at Storage Visions an HGST Ultrastar He8 HDD is on display. The new high capacity drives from HGST are utilizing helium, with their HelioSeal technology, to reduce air resistance and vibration. This allows them to cram more platters into the standard 3.5" form factor. The He8 features the same 7stac architecture as its predecessor, the Ultrastar He6 (review here). This architecture utilizes 7 platters and 14 heads.

The net benefit is 33% more capacity with a decrease of 23% for idle power consumption. The He8 also offers 44% better Watts per TB. The drives also feature Instant Secure Erase for security and Rebuild Assist to speed RAID recovery tasks.
