Horizon's tribes were very expensive and time consuming to make, artist confirms

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 19, 2025 11:32 AM CDT

New documents give key insight into the production process of Sony's best-selling Horizon franchise, revealing some of the more taxing and expensive parts of the game's design.

Horizon's tribes were very expensive and time consuming to make, artist confirms

PlayStation's first-party Horizon series is dazzling and eye-catching, matching up colorful meso-American style with sci-fi futurism. The game's vibrant world is anchored by seven tribes that give players more agency in the Horizon universe. According to Guerrilla Games art director Jan-Bart van Beek, putting the tribes together was actually one of the most difficult parts of making the game. Guerrilla spent a lot of time and money meticulously crafting each tribe, and that attention to detail permeates throughout the games--from clothing to architecture, the games are distinct and striking.

The info comes by way of a written declaration from van Beek in regards to Sony's active copyright infringement lawsuit against Tencent. The company behind PlayStation is suing Tencent, saying that Tencent's game Light of Motiram is essentially a blatant imitator of Sony's Horizon series.

Xbox president re-confirms next-gen hardware is still on the way

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 19, 2025 7:20 AM CDT

Despite the current controversies around pricing, an unprofitable business model, and a weakening market presence, Microsoft won't step out of the hardware market any time soon.

Xbox president re-confirms next-gen hardware is still on the way

Microsoft has no plans to stop making Xbox consoles, and is forging ahead on a new multi-year product roadmap with AMD. The common perception among enthusiast gamers is that Xbox is slowly pulling out of hardware so it can go all-in on software and services. This isn't the case, or at least not what Microsoft is publicly telegraphing, even if its marketing strategy is loudly reminding everyone that Xbox is a service and not just a console--that's why every platform is technically an Xbox.

In a recent interview with Variety, Xbox president Sarah Bond reaffirms Microsoft Gaming's plan for future systems. Bond reiterates Microsoft's roadmap with AMD on "next-gen hardware," a line of products that Microsoft has confirmed will consist of more than just Xbox consoles. The Xbox exec also confirms Microsoft is currently prototyping and designing the new lineup.

Sony and Tencent were exploring options for third-party licensing deals of key PlayStation franchises, including The Last of Us...before Sony sued Tencent for copyright infringement.

Tencent allegedly included images of Horizon clone while pitching Last of Us game to Sony

A new filing in the Sony vs Tencent copyright infringement case reveals an interesting development: At one point, Sony and Tencent were exploring ideas on a potential Last of Us collaboration.

In a written declaration, PlayStation's head of mobile Olivier Courtemanche recalls key events in the talks between Sony and Tencent, saying that at one point he met up with Tencent's in-house Aurora Studios to explore a potential Last of Us collaboration. Interestingly enough, Courtemanche says that Aurora Studios included assets from their Horizon imitator, Light of Motiram, in the presentation that he was shown. This presentation was supposed to include pitches and ideas for new games based on PlayStation IPs, including The Last of Us.

2K brings in the big guns to save Project Ethos, recruits Apex and Call of Duty producer

2K is bringing in another Call of Duty veteran to spearhead Project Ethos, a new innovative hero shooter: Ben Brinkman will now take over as studio head at 31st Union. Brinkman is a heavyweight in the FPS game, having served as producer on Call of Duty games at Treyarch and executive producer on Apex Legends. Brinkman replaces Michael Condrey, a fellow former Call of Duty veteran developer who had been let go back in February.

The publisher confirmed the news to Variety via an executive memo from 2K Games president David Ismailer. Project Ethos held a beta test last year, but has seen slower iteration throughout 2025. Brinkman's appointment is a bid to turn that around.

Halo Studios is appearing on stage at the Halo World Championship 2025 on October 24, where the studio is going to unveil the next Halo title and discuss what is in store for the franchise, leading into the future.

Two new Halo games coming in 2026, one is a multiplayer 'like Fortnite'

However, RebsGaming, a well-known Halo insider, has revealed what Halo Studios is planning on showcasing, or at the very least, what the developer is currently working on. In a new video, RebsGaming said Halo Studios is working on a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, along with the next mainline Halo game, but also a new standalone multiplayer-focused Halo title that's being designed to be a live-service project.

According to the insider, the live-service title is a "long-term updating multiplayer game," and its "live service component is like Fortnite". Despite being "like Fortnite," the insider said their source didn't mention that it was a battle royale game, nor did they give any other specifics. Reports indicate the live-service Halo title is being designed to have an evolving ecosystem, with developers rolling out seasonal updates, events, and providing rotating content.

Apple's first foldable iPhone could be delayed until 2027 over complex hinge system

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Oct 17, 2025 11:11 PM CDT

Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone might not release in 2026 and could be delayed according to Mizuho Securities, citing issues with key design elements of the phone including the complex hinge system and flexible OLED display.

Apple's first foldable iPhone could be delayed until 2027 over complex hinge system

The analysts also said that the estimated flexible OLED panel production has been reduced from 13 million units to around 9 million units, a huge adjustment that hints at slower early-stage manufacturing. We could expect Apple to still launch its foldable iPhone in 2026, but internal testing standards from the company could push the release out considerably.

We were to expect Apple to unveil the foldable iPhone -- rumored as the iPhone Ultra -- alongside its next-gen iPhone 18 family of smartphones in 2026. Apple as a company is perfectionistic, where it won't release a product, especially something totally new for the company, unless it is as close to perfect as possible.

Synopsys teases 'silicon bring-up' of next-gen LPDDR6 IP fabbed on TSMC's new N2P process node

Anthony Garreffa | RAM | Oct 17, 2025 10:20 PM CDT

Synopsys has just announced a big milestone in its development of next-gen mobile memory, with the company unveiling the silicon bring-up of its LPDDR6 IP based on TSMC's bleeding-edge N2P process node.

Synopsys teases 'silicon bring-up' of next-gen LPDDR6 IP fabbed on TSMC's new N2P process node

The silicon bring-up stage of development is when the first power-on of a new chip happens, and in this case, it's an IP block. This involves testing a particular product in multiple stages, including hardware checks, power sequencing, and more. Synopsys has successfully developed a licensable building block of next-gen LPDDR6 memory technology, with bandwidth of up to 86GB/sec, aligning with JEDEC standards.

This is also one of the first times integrating TSMC's new N2P process node into an LPDDR6 IP block, with the IP block featuring two main components: the controller, and the PHY interface onboard. The controller works on the JEDEC protocol engine, joined with timing control and low-power states. TSMC's new N2P node will feature PHY analog and I/O circuits built on it, with N2P metal stacks and N2P I/O libraries.

In a twist of fate, Atari revives its 80s rival with new console

In an interesting twist of fate, Atari purchased the rights to the Intellivision brand in 2024. The two companies were heated rivals in the early days of console gaming. Now the brands are unified under one roof, and Atari is making good on its investment by releasing an Intellivision retro console.

The new $150 Intellivision Sprint is an authentic recreation of the classic system, complete with two keypads (is this a controller, or a phone?) and 45 built-in games including B-17 Bomber and Bomb Squad, plus new-and-improved overlays required for each game.

Irritating text messages have generated more than $1 billion

Jak Connor | Mobile Devices | Oct 17, 2025 1:02 PM CDT

If you have a smartphone, you have received a scam text, and if your information has been shared around online, you probably get scam texts several times a week. While most people ignore these texts as they are obviously nefarious, they generate more than $1 billion per year.

Irritating text messages have generated more than $1 billion

It's an unfortunate thought to know that scammers are taking hard-earned money from everyday people that think they are paying for things such as US Postal Service fees, unpaid traffic violations, or a toll payment that is overdue. These are just some of the texts that US residents are receiving on a daily basis, and according to officials criminal organizations operating out of China are responsible for at least the toll and postage messages.

With just those two messages, the organized crime groups have generated more than $1 billion over the last three years, according to data provided by the Department of Homeland Security. Officials state that behind these text messages are criminal networks that are being connected to server farms, which then send a flurry of text messages to potential victims.

Battlefield 6 team responds to community server XP farms with fix

Jak Connor | Gaming | Oct 17, 2025 12:02 PM CDT

In a new Community Update post the Battlefield team has addressed player feedback regarding community servers being inundated with XP farms, which, for those who don't know, are servers dedicated to enabling players to farm as much XP as they possibly can in the shortest amount of time possible.

Battlefield 6 team responds to community server XP farms with fix

XP farming servers have been set up within the Battlefield 6 Portal feature as many players have felt like the amount of time it takes to get XP in the live multiplayer games is too long. Moreover, it's much easier to sit in a server with a bunch of bots and just mow them down to unlock new weapons and attachments, rather than play an actual multiplayer game.

The convenience of these custom XP farming servers is far too attractive for players, resulting in the maximum capacity on community servers being reached, and the majority of them being dedicated to XP farming.

Battlefield 6 progression changes based on player feedback are now live

Jak Connor | Gaming | Oct 17, 2025 11:46 AM CDT

Battlefield 6 developers have posted a lengthy Community Update detailing an incoming update addressing player concerns regarding progression.

Battlefield 6 progression changes based on player feedback are now live

The developers have taken to the Battlefield Comms X account, where they wrote that community feedback and concerns have been heard, and that some adjustments are coming to the progression system in Battlefield 6. For those who don't know, many BF6 players have been reporting the pace of the progression to unlock new gadgets, levels and weapon attachments is excruciatingly slow, resulting in players not feeling as rewarded as they can be for the time spent in-game.

To address this problem, developers are increasing the amount of XP gained from match completion and daily bonus by 10% and 40% respectively. In addition to that, the XP required to unlock the first twenty attachments is being reduced, meaning players can start using new attachments almost twice as fast. Furthermore, assignments that required career ranks 20, 23, and 26, will now require 10, 15, and 20, respectively.

Glen Schofield, a former director on three Call of Duty titles, has sat down for an interview where he was very candid about where the franchise has headed since his departure from it.

Former Call of Duty director says since he left 'the games aren't as good'

In an interview with VideoGamesChronicle, Schofield, who is named director on Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, Advanced Warfare, and World War 2, along with a credited producer on other blockbuster titles such as Blood Omen 2: Legacy of Kain, Dead Space, The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and From Russia With Love, said since he left the franchise, none of the Call of Duty games "have been very good".

Schofield pointed to examples such as Modern Warfare 3 being the last Call of Duty to win Action Game of the Year, and that his two previous Call of Duty titles were nominated for it. Adding, now Call of Duty games aren't even nominated for the category. The former director commented on Call of Duty moving away from a yearly release, saying that if the franchise did that, Activision would lose $1 billion a year, and that's why they haven't.

This is the latest assertion on the MacBook Pro M6 from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, one of the more reliable sources for Apple leaks - and it originates from the usual people who didn't want to be named.

You may recall that Apple has famously declared itself as dead-against the idea of touchscreen laptops in the past, broadly arguing that a touch-enabled display simply isn't necessary (and represents bad ergonomics, for starters).
