NASA photographs mile-wide asteroid approaching Earth with its own moon
Asteroids contain the answers to the formulation of the solar system and the wider galaxy while also being potentially deadly depending on their size, which is why it's a great idea to keep an eye out for as many as we can - particularly the big ones.
One such space beast was discovered in 2011 as it was making a close approach with Earth. The asteroid, now dubbed 2011 UL21, made its close approach to Earth only recently on June 27, and while it zoomed by, NASA researchers captured close-ups of it, revealing details that are scarcely seen during asteroid observation. 2011 UL21 is a mile-wide asteroid and when it passed Earth it was scanned by radar revealing a tiny moonlet orbiting the larger body.
This isn't the first time a large asteroid has been found having its own moon, as NASA calls these asteroids binary systems and even believes around two-thirds of asteroids as big as 2011 UL21 have their own moon. However, photographing them is another challenge entirely.
Alarms raised in security circles after largest password leak in hacking forum history
Passwords may be one of the most annoying aspects of our daily lives, but they have become extremely important with the ever-growing adoption of the digital landscape. That is why it isn't good when nearly 10 billion unique plaintext passwords leak onto a hacking forum.
A user with the handle "ObamaCare," who has a history of leaking data such as employee databases sourced from law firms, and data acquired from colleges and casinos, posted on a hacking forum, "Xmas came early this year". The leaker added, "I present to you a new rockyou2024 password list with over 9.9 billion passwords!" ObamaCare is referencing a leak called "RockYou2021" where 8.4 billion passwords were leaked online.
Security experts over at Cybernews believe the leak could have extremely bad ramifications for users around the world, as the exposed users could see an increase in the number of online accounts being illegally accessed through brute force hacking. Nintendo Switch 2 performance boost to fall short of Valve's Steam Deck
The Nintendo Switch is one of the best-selling consoles of all time, with the now 7-year-old console recently closing in on the unit sales of the best-selling console in the US, the PlayStation 2.
With that immense popularity, it's quite safe to assume Nintendo is going to be keeping a similar design with its next-generation console, which has gained itself the placeholder name - Nintendo Switch 2. The question is how powerful the hardware will be within this console, and according to Moore's Law is Dead, a YouTube that has many industry insiders, Nintendo's focus for the Switch 2 will be improving docked performance while maintaining power efficiency in handheld mode.
According to the YouTuber, in handheld mode, the Switch 2 will run at 5 watts and feature a fanless cooling solution, and in docked mode, it will be bumped up to a range of 15 to 30 watts, depending on the load of the game. To compensate for this bump in wattage, Nintendo will introduce a cooling solution. As for raw performance, the rumored chip inside the Nintendo Switch 2 is designed with power efficiency in mind, and when compared to the Steam Deck, Moore's Law is Dead says its average FPS will be slightly lower.
Microsoft adds spell check to Notepad after 41 years, but with an eye-rolling catch
Microsoft Notepad isn't considered among the top text editor programs, but it's certainly one of the oldest and most widely installed.
Microsoft first introduced Notepad in May 1983, presenting it as a stripped-down version of the widely used Microsoft Word. The new piece of software arrived with the ability to bold, underline, and italicize text, and over the years, it slowly gained more features while still keeping its stripped-down initial design intention. One of the most requested features for Notepad is spellcheck, and while that may seem like a feature that should have already been added many years ago, it was once, and appears to be still, a big selling point for Microsoft Word.
However, 41 years later, Microsoft has decided to add spell check to Notepad, as the new feature has seemingly been rolled to Windows 11 Notepad versions 11.2405.13.0 and later. The feature was first tested back in March and works as every other spell checker works. If the spell checker believes a word has been spelled incorrectly, it will highlight that word with a red line underneath it. Users can right-click on that word and navigate to the "Spelling" option, where they will be presented with a list of possible correctly spelled words.
Copilot+ PC warning issued by Samsung while companies hot potato problems
Copilot+ PCs have started hitting the market, and buyers are concerned that picking up one of these new AI-powered devices will mean some of their favorite software won't work, or at least won't work as well as it would on a traditional system.
Unfortunately, that appears to be the case, as the new Copilot_ PCs are based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon X SoCs that use Arm architecture, which is different from the traditional x86 architecture that has been present in PCs for decades. Developers have spent with the x86 architecture, meaning software has been finely tuned and optimized to run on compatible hardware. Unfortunately, this means Arm-based SoC-powered devices will need to port or emulate software to make it compatible.
Copilot+ PCs suffer from this fate, and to combat this, Microsoft decided to create an emulator called "Prism,," which the company claims is capable of running x86 software at speeds comparable to native x86-developed software. However, those claims haven't convinced Samsung as the company issued a warning to its Korean customers regarding its GalaxyBook Edge 4 Copilot+ PCs not being able to run some common software such as antivirus apps and games.

A University of Michigan astronomer used NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to discover an exoplanet with a promising temperature, an indication of possible liquid water present.
The discovery of this exoplanet is part of the wider effort to discover another habitable planet, which, if it has the same or close enough ingredients to Earth, may harbor life. The discovery of a planet that has a reasonable temperature - a temperature that is both cool enough to host water but warm enough for it to be liquid - means researchers have a found a planet that may already be hosting life.
LHS 1140 b is one of those exoplanets, and according to Charles Cadieux, the lead author of the recently published paper on the exoplanet, "Of all currently known temperate exoplanets, LHS 1140 b could well be our best bet to one day indirectly confirm liquid water on the surface of an alien world."
Kotaku, Gizmodo, Lifehacker announces game over for Australia gaming news
The gaming journalism industry in Australia just took a massive hit after some of the biggest publications announced it was game over.
Vice, Gizmodo, Refiner29, Kotaku, and Lifehacker won't publish content in Australia following a jobs cut from its parent company, Pedestrian Group, which is owned by Nine. The Pedestrian Group announced its layoffs to its staff via an email from the CEO of the Pedestrian Group, Matt Rowley, who claimed license partners are facing financial troubles ahead, along with corporate instability, have been what caused the closures.
Rowley also stated he would depart from his position as company CEO and that Pedestrian is now focussing on its "wholly owned Pedestrian brands where we control the strategy, the content, the product, the sales, and the outcome - the entire business." Writers for the publications have since taken to X, formerly Twitter, to express their thoughts at this time, with some saying it's sad that their time at the publication has come to an end this way and others saying how much they loved their position.

Privacy is becoming more and more paramount in today's market of devices and software, with consumers looking now more than ever for privacy-focused products, or at least features in existing products.
A recently published Microsoft patent may have given us a look into the future of privacy when it comes to documents, or even just pages of text for that matter. The new patent describes a new type of encryption technology that makes it impossible for anyone to read the text that is on a device's screen that isn't the user of the device. The technology takes the text on the screen and encodes it, modifying letters and then combining it with the original body of text.
Next, the system uses eye-tracking technology to display only the encoded version of the document in the peripheral view of the reader while also making the focus point clear for reading. From the perspective of someone trying to read the text on a device, they would see a page full of jumbled letters and words that wouldn't make any sense. From the perspective of the reader, wherever they are looking in the body of text they would see clear writing.
Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer mod coming, GTA Online meets Night City
CD Projekt RED's Cyberpunk 2077 has changed a lot in recent years, and it's now in a great place - but the single-player cinematic action RPG got off to a rocky start. So much so that the developer's big plans to launch a multiplayer GTA Online-style spin-off or expansion got scrapped as it spent all of its efforts on fixing the core experience and putting together the game's only bit of paid DLC - the excellent Phantom Liberty expansion.
The multiplayer Cyberpunk 2077 dream is alive and well, thanks to the CyberMP multiplayer mod currently in development. The single developer behind the project invited some people to check out an early version - including YouTube creator JuiceHead - and it's impressive stuff.
The mod supports up to 20 players, and based on the work carried out so far, the net code or lag is minimal. Cyberpunk 2077 deathmatches and racing in Night City are proving to be a lot of fun with snappy and responsive action.

Wells Fargo predicts AI power demand to skyrocket by 8050% by 2030
Wells Fargo is projecting that AI power demand will surge by an incredible 8050% by 2030, from 8TWh in 2024 up to an incredible 652TWh in 2030.
The world of AI is exploding in more ways than one, with the power consumption of today's high-end AI GPUs like the NVIDIA H100 AI GPU where the H100 in SXM form factor using 700W of power alone. Moving over to NVIDIA's next-generation B200 AI GPU, which will use up to 1200W of power per AI GPU, we can see how these AI power demands are going to get out of control.
AMD's previous-gen Instinct MI250 AI accelerators draw a peak of 560W of power, while the new MI300X AI accelerator from the company consumes 750W at peak, a 50% increase gen-over-gen. Intel doesn't get out of this either, with its new Gaudi 2 AI accelerator using 600W, its new Gaudi 3 AI accelerator uses 900W of power at peak (another 50% increase).

TCL releases a new AI-generated sci-fi short film called 'Message in a Bot'
TCL is known for its consumer electronics, which includes an extensive range of impressive and affordable TVs. As part of its home entertainment products, the company offers its own streaming platform called TCLtv+ - an ad-supported platform offering a variety of entertainment, sports, music, and lifestyle programming.
With that, TCLtv+ Studios is the production arm creating original content for the platform, some of which are built using generative AI tools. The company's first AI sci-fi film short, "Message in a Bot," is now available on YouTube and X, with its TCLtv+ debut coming later in the month. This is TCL's second AI-generated piece of content, following the release of Next Stop Paris, its AI-generated romantic comedy, which we covered a few months ago.
And, well, you're probably wondering if it - you know - works as a film. The short answer is yes, even though much of it looks like a collection of AI-generated GIFs stitched together to form a somewhat cohesive plot. The story, as it were, involves a UFO crash landing Earth and humanity using the recovered technology to send a dog through a wormhole to an alien planet filled with E.T.-like creatures. More or less.
SK hynix looking for semiconductor engineers: 48 positions in HBM, FinFET transistor experts
SK hynix is looking for semiconductor engineers to help fill 48 positions related to HBM chips, including manufacturing process engineers to help increase yields and improve testing, FinFET transistor experts, and former Samsung staffers.
In a new report from The Korea Economic Daily, dominance in the AI and HBM space is heating up between South Korean rivals Samsung SK hynix, particularly in the HBM4 memory chip business. SK hynix designs and produces most of its semiconductors in-house, including HBM memory, but for HBM4, the company is outsourcing manufacturing to a foundry or contract chipmaker, with all signs pointing to TSMC.
On top of that, SK hynix is "aggressively" looking for the top talent in the industry -- mostly in South Korea, where Samsung and SK hynix are battling it out -- to advance its HBM technology and oversee tech outsourcing. SK hynix is aiming for the throat, looking at hiring as many Samsung engineers as it can.

South Korean giants Samsung Electronics and SK Group are "speeding up efforts" to secure future dominance in glass substrates, which would be a "game-changer" for the semiconductor and AI industries.
In a new report from the Korea Herald, Samsung and SK Group are reportedly speeding up the development of glass substrate semiconductor research, which could "drastically boost the data capacity and speed of semiconductors in the era of artificial intelligence."
Samsung and SK Group leaders have visited their respective business sites that are producing glass substrates, renewing their commitment to the game-changing semiconductor technology. Glass substrates will overcome the limits of conventional plastic substrates, heavily boosting the performance and power efficiency of future-gen semiconductors.

AMD Ryzen 9 9900X breaks single-core benchmark record in Geekbench and it's not the top SKU
AMD's next-gen Ryzen CPUs are around the corner, and today, we've got some pretty tasty leaks courtesy of Benchleaks showing impressive performance for the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X CPU. The Geekbench 6 Single-Core Score of 3401, uploaded on July 8, puts it at the top of the charts. And this is the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X, not the flagship Ryzen 9 9950X.
This score (according to Tom's Hardware) is double-digits higher than the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D while also being roughly 10% faster than the existing record holder, the Intel Core i9-13900KS. This result is even more impressive because the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X is a 120W CPU, while the 13900KS is pushed to around 250W in turbo mode.
Naturally, as a 24-thread CPU, the Multi-Core Score of 19,756 isn't as impressive - it isn't bad - but it does sit behind comparative Intel products like the Core i9-13900KS and Intel Core i9-14900K.

Apple is gearing up to use TSMC's latest SoIC advanced packaging technologies for its next-generation M5 chips as part of a two-pronged strategy for the company to power its future Macs and AI servers.
In a report from DigiTimes, we're learning that Apple would adopt TSMC's new SoIC (System on Integrated Chip) advanced packaging technology that allows for 3D stacking of chips, providing improved electrical performance and thermal management versus traditional 2D chip designs.
The Economic Daily reported that Apple has expanded its cooperation with TSMC on its next-generation hybrid SoIC packaging designs that combine thermoplastic carbon fiber composite molding technology, which is reportedly in a small trial production phase. Apple hopes to have TSMC mass producing its next-gen M5 processors in 2025 and 2026 for future-gen Mac system and AI servers.
AMD's flagship Radeon RDNA 4 GPU to debut in early 2025, here's everything we know so far
AMD hasn't officially revealed any information about its next-generation Radeon graphics cards for PC gaming and desktop computers. However, we've heard rumors and rumblings about what to expect for over a year. The most recent gives us a time frame for when to expect the first Radeon RX 8000 Series product to debut - CES 2025 in January, where AMD will formally lift the lid on the flagship Navi 48 GPU.
Navi 48 is the codename for the upcoming flagship RDNA 4 GPU, much like how the Navi 31 GPU was the flagship RDNA 3 chip found inside the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT. Based on how discrete GPUs are created, Navi 48 will power at least one or two different products - the upcoming Radeon RX 8800 XT and Radeon RX 8700 XT (product naming hasn't been confirmed or leaked).
Yes, this means there won't be a flagship Radeon RX 8900 XT or 8900 XTX equivalent this time - with AMD skipping a high-end enthusiast flagship model for its next-gen Radeon line-up. Apple expected to use TSMC's 2nm process, SoIC-X packaging tech in 2H 2025
Apple is expected to use TSMC's new 2nm process and SoIC-X (System on Integrated Chip) advanced packaging technology in the second half of 2025, according to new reports.
AMD was the first to adopt SoIC advanced packaging for its Instinct MI300 AI accelerators and high-end gaming GPUs, with SoIC-X yields hitting up to 90% up from 50% previously, according to UDN. SoIC advanced packaging the most complex of TSMC's top advanced packaging technologies, including CoWoS (Chip on Wafer on Substrate).
According to sources of UDN, TSMC's competitiveness is "better than that of its peers" and its advanced processes have a high market share. TSMC proposed SoIC advanced packaging back in 2018, with mass production starting in 2022, and at the beginning, yields were just at 50%, but now the yield rate of SoIC-X used in AMD products has "now reached more" than 90%, according to UDN.
