Xbox One upgrade later this year will enable reserved 7th CPU core

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 13, 2015 10:31 PM CDT

With Sony winning the current-gen console race in terms of both performance and sales of the PlayStation 4, Microsoft reportedly has a trick up its sleeve to boost performance on the Xbox One later this year, according to the developer behind The Technomancer, Spiders.

Spiders' CEO, Jehanne Rousseau, a French game studio, said that Microsoft will soon be boosting the CPU performance on the Xbox One, something that will help developers meet their targeted performance goals. When GamingBolt talked to Spiders' CEO recently, Rousseau explained how the studio will squeeze additional performance out of the Xbox One for their upcoming Mars-based, post-apocalyptic RPG, The Technomancer.

Rousseau said: "We are not using it yet but this is only a matter of time! This is very interesting for us to have access to this processor. We will use it to do a part of our computations to smooth the frame rate. In fact we designed our new engine to be very flexible about the number of processors. With mainly in mind the numerous PC designs, but this will also be useful for this 7th processor".

Acer revenues slide 30% in Q2, but Windows 10's release should help

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Jul 13, 2015 9:41 PM CDT

Acer has revealed that its revenue for Q2 have dropped by a huge 30%, but the company is hoping that these numbers won't stay low for long, especially with the release of Windows 10 right around the corner on July 29.

The company is hoping that the sales of its upcoming 2-in-1s, Chromebooks, and gaming notebooks will help those numbers in Q3. Windows 10-based laptops, desktops, and other products will also spur sales, too. But with Acer kicking some serious ass with its NVIDIA G-Sync powered XB270HU monitor, I don't see why the company isn't pushing into the gaming sector more.

The 27-inch 1440p IPS-based panel has a 144Hz refresh rate, but is mostly in the dark when it comes to marketing. The ASUS ROG Swift gets all of the gaming love, but if Acer can push its upcoming 34-inch 3440x1440 ultrawide monitor with G-Sync technology right, things could really swing in Acer's favor later this year.

New 'Mission Impossible' video reveals Tom Cruise risking life & limb

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Jul 13, 2015 8:33 PM CDT

With the launch of the upcoming fifth entry in the long running 'Mission Impossible' franchise later in the month, and Paramount has been working hard to convince fans and casuals to get out and see the film. One thing we don't need to be convinced of is Tom Cruise's commitment to authenticity, which sees the veteran perform many of his own stunts. But one upcoming stunt in 'Rogue Nation' raises the stakes even further, which is explored in a new featurette released today by the studio.

Helmed by Christopher McQuarrie (who previously directed Cruise in 2013's 'Jack Reacher'), the film reprises Jeremy Renner as Agent Brandt, Simon Pegg as Benji and Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell. New to the film are Alec Baldwin, Simon McBurney and Rebecca Ferguson.

'Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation' hits cinemas worldwide from July 30.

Warner Bros releases the Suicide Squad trailer from Comic-Con

Anthony Garreffa | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Jul 13, 2015 5:52 PM CDT

The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer shown at Comic-Con this year was truly awesome, but now it's time for the bad guys to get into the spotlight, with the official Comic-Con trailer of Suicide Squad released by Warner Bros.

Warner Bros releases the Suicide Squad trailer from Comic-Con

As you can see in the trailer, it looks damn good. Director David Ayer has nailed the look and style of the Suicide Squad, with Will Smith as Deadshot, Margie Robbie as Harley Quinn, and we get a quick tease of Jared Leto as The Joker. Surprisingly, it looks like the official Comic-Con trailer was released because Warner Bros couldn't contain the smartphone-quality leaks of the Suicide Squad trailer.

In a statement, Warner Bros Pictures' President of Worldwide Marketing an International Distribution, Sue Kroll, said: "Warner Bros. Pictures and our anti-piracy team have worked tirelessly over the last 48 hours to contain the Suicide Squad footage that was pirated from Hall H on Saturday". She continued: "We have been unable to achieve that goal. Today we will release the same footage that has been illegally circulating on the web, in the form it was created and high quality with which it was intended to be enjoyed. We regret this decision as it was our intention to keep the footage as a unique experience for the Comic Con crowd, but we cannot continue to allow the film to be represented by the poor quality of the pirated footage stolen from our presentation".

AMD has 'priority access' to HBM2, an advantage over NVIDIA

Anthony Garreffa | Video Cards & GPUs | Jul 13, 2015 4:16 PM CDT

One of the main benefits of AMD's Radeon R9 Fury and R9 Fury X cards is their use of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), and thanks to AMD's relationship with SK Hynix, AMD has 'priority access' to HBM2, according to WCCFTech.

HBM2 is going to be limited in supply at first, the same problems associated with HBM1 right now, and with NVIDIA set to use HBM2 on their upcoming 16nm-based Pascal architecture, AMD will have the one-up on its competitor. AMD should be able to secure most of the HBM2 produced at the time, which is exactly the position AMD wants to be in, come 2016.

If this is true, it is going to force NVIDIA into a corner. NVIDIA needs to jump to HBM2 with its shift to 16nm, and its first GPU based on the Pascal architecture. But, if NVIDIA finds it hard to secure HBM2 because AMD has 'priority access' to the first batches of the super-fast VRAM, this could cause a big issue for NVIDIA's next-gen cards. HBM2 is expected to drive memory bandwidth to 1TB/sec, up from the 512GB/sec possible on the Fury X, and 334GB/sec on the GTX 980 Ti.

Microsoft finds a way to increase battery life of wearables

Anthony Garreffa | Wearable Computing & Fashion | Jul 13, 2015 3:14 AM CDT

One thing that unites all wearables would have to be their lackluster battery life, but it looks like researchers over at Microsoft's WearDrive project might have solved this.

The researchers are using a RAM-based system that doesn't rely on a battery, something that would save battery life in wearables. The way this works is by pairing the wearable with a smartphone through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, with the more energy consuming apps processed on the smartphone, instead of on the wearable where it consumes the important battery life.

Microsoft's WearDrive energy saving system was tested on an Android-powered smartphone, with the researchers noting that there was a "negligible" impact on smartphone battery life, while there was a 300% improvement on battery conversation on the werable. The we arable was also 800% faster than normal application runtimes, which is a huge achievement. The WearDrive also deactivates when it's out of range of a paired smartphone.

Unreal Engine 4 demo sees an appearance from Mario, looks glorious

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 13, 2015 1:34 AM CDT

We've seen Mario in all of his glory on Unreal Engine 4 not too long ago, but now the infamous plumber who never seems to be a plumber, he's now appearing in Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4-powered tech demo 'A Boy And His Kite'.

Unreal Engine 4 demo sees an appearance from Mario, looks glorious

The tech demo runs beautifully well, and while Mario seems to be running at a very weird speed, this is just a tech demo with a bit of modding applied. Still, the beauty of Unreal Engine 4 is shown off incredibly well in this demo, but I now just want to play an Unreal Engine 4-powered version of Mario, dammit.

You won't be able to use any guns in Mirror's Edge Catalyst

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 13, 2015 12:39 AM CDT

Now that Mirror's Edge Catalyst has been unveiled, we're finding out more information on the free-running first-person non-shooter. During an interview with Polygon, Senior Producer on Mirror's Edge Catalyst, Sara Jansson, said: "In Mirror's Edge Catalyst, you won't be using any guns at all".

Jansson continued: "We've completely removed that aspect of the game. You can't even pick them up". EA and DICE have reportedly developed an all-new combat system that emphasizes melee combat, where Jansson explained it in detail with Polygon: "Faith will fight, but she doesn't kill. Now the fighting is more of an extension of the movement. It builds on the flow. It fits a lot better with the game mechanics. When Faith is in flow, when she stitches together move after move without failing and keeps her momentum going, she's actually invulnerable to bullets. That can keep her out of harm's way. It's only when she stops that she can get hurt".

If you've got a spare $200, you could look at grabbing the Mirror's Edge Catalyst Collector's Edition version of the game, too. As for the release date on the game, we're looking at a February 23, 2016 release for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
