ASUS unveils ROG Areion, a 10GbE Ethernet PCIe adapter

Anthony Garreffa | Networking | Apr 3, 2017 11:36 PM CDT

The networking world is going through some changes, after the 1GbE standard becoming a household name on motherboards, with 10GbE being too expensive to shift over.

ASUS unveils ROG Areion, a 10GbE Ethernet PCIe adapter

ASUS is a company that makes high-end components and products, so it made sense that during their recent 'Outshine the Competition' event in Berlin, ASUS teased a new PCIe-based 10GbE adapter. The new ASUS ROG Areion is a 10GbE Ethernet adapter that has a huge heat sink, and plugs into a PCIe 3.0 x4 port.

The ROG Areion is also backwards compatible with slower networking standards, with 5GbE, 2.5GbE, 1GbE, and 100Mbps - but 10GbE is why we're all here... over 1GB/sec on your network is a huge deal for some people, especially content creators.

Intel's Kaby Lake-G: super-fast discrete GPU + HBM2 tech

Anthony Garreffa | CPU, APU & Chipsets | Apr 3, 2017 7:21 PM CDT

Intel's next-gen Kaby Lake-G processors might be something to get excited about for Chipzilla, with the latest rumors pointing towards Intel's upcoming Kaby Lake-G architecture featuring a massive integrated GPU, with HBM2 technology.

Intel's Kaby Lake-G: super-fast discrete GPU + HBM2 tech

The leaked slides tease that Kaby Lake-G will feature a massive iGPU, all built on the 14nm process, and a dedicated PCIe link to a separate discrete GPU with HBM2 tech. The news was revealed during Intel's recent Technology and Manufacturing Day, with two SKUs teased on the BGA design: one for embedded systems, and the other for next-gen laptops.

Intel's next-gen Kaby Lake-G processors will reportedly come in 4C/8T with a 65W and 100W model, and since there's no on-package cache, the 65/100W TDPs are weird - but, it makes sense if they rock powerful integrated GPU + HBM2 tech. The separate GPU will be connected to the CPU through a dedicated PCIe 3.0 x8 interface, while the HBM2 memory will be the main on-board VRAM for the iGPU.

Future 'Spider-Man' sequels to stay in the MCU for now

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Apr 3, 2017 6:54 PM CDT

While Spider-Man made a brief cameo appearance in last year's 'Captain America: Civil War', his solo outing in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming will have the character fully integrated in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sandbox, alongside established characters such as Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Hulk. But how long can the Disney/ Sony Pictures team up last? Well, it could go on a while.

Future 'Spider-Man' sequels to stay in the MCU for now

Speaking to Collider, 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' producer Eric Carroll speaks of the reverence that having the character back under Marvel control. "It's like your Dad handing you the keys to the Lamborghini. This was the one unspoken rule when you came to work at Marvel, 'Hey, Spider-Man is the crown jewel, but we'll never get him back. We're never getting Spider-Man back, but look at all these other cool characters we have?!' All of a sudden when there's this opportunity to play with Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that's all it was." But as to long it can go on, veteran Sony Pictures producer and ex-CEO Amy Pascal seems bullish. "I think we found the right formula and I think everybody is going to want the right thing to continue. And I think that there's a surprisingly generous and cooperative thing and if it works, then it's going to work for everybody."

'Spider-Man: Homecoming' will sling its way to 2D, 3D and IMAX cinemas worldwide from July 6.
