CD Projekt Red says no downgrade in graphics for Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Roshan Ashraf Shaikh | Gaming | Oct 8, 2014 10:22 AM CDT

A week ago, CD Projekt Red released few screenshots of its upcoming game 'Witcher 3: Wild Hunt' which created sheer disappointment within many of its fanbase. As a result, CD Projekt Red had to respond to assure gamers that the graphics shown in demo videos which was showcased at E3 2013 and a week-old screenshots are not a final version. An anonymous member on the NeoGAF forums also claimed that the CD Projekt Red and its PR are creating an overblown vision of a game that doesn't exist.

It was also assumed that the preview was going to be as good as the final version. It was also speculated that the game's graphics showed in a NVIDIA PhysX Middleware demo would be the same result in console variants. The demo was displayed to display HairWorks, specifically relating to rendering of hair and fur with PhysX enabled.

CD Projekt Red's Community Manager Marcin Momot said: "Please keep in mind that the game is still in production phase. Certain things are still being worked on. The final version of the game will look better than what can be seen in the latest screenshots - no matter the platform. As you probably know, when publishing screenshots, some of them can be subjectively less appealing than others (depending on one's opinion), that's perfectly normal. The most important thing here is that the game will come out looking gorgeous when we are done working on it. There will be no downgrade."

Inventors for blue LED lights gets a Nobel Prize in physics

The researchers of blue light-emitting diode (LED) are the recipients of the 2014 Nobel Prize in physics. The winners are Isamu Akasi, a professor at Meijo University and Nagoya University, Hiroshi Amano, also a professor at Nagoya University and Shuji Nakamura who is a professor at the University of California. Along with the Nobel Prize, the scientists will also be splitting $1.1 million award money.

The three scientists were the ones who found a way to produce blue light beams in the early 1990s, but the red and the green light diodes were produced by others. According to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in its prize citation that white light couldn't have been invented if it wasn't for the blue LED invention. The invention of blue LED is 20 years old, but has been used in multiple electronic appliances, devices, day-to-day electronic equipment, traffic signals, headlights and even PCs.

The main advantage of LEDs is that it significantly reduces the consumption of electricity in comparison with incandescent and fluorescent lights. The widespread adoption of the practical invention, and the versatility in other fields is what makes them deserve this award. LEDs are used in smart bulbs that are made by few companies like GE and Phillips.

Myst is being turned into a 'transmedia franchise' will reach TV

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Oct 8, 2014 2:33 AM CDT

Myst developer Cyan has inked a deal with Legendary Entertainment to bring Myst to TV, with Variety claiming that the two creators behind the island-based adventure game, Rand and Robyn Miller, to be directly involved with the creative direction of the TV series.

We shouldn't just expect a "compelling TV drama" but it will expand Myst into a "true transmedia franchise" that could involve tablet support, as well as a tie-in video game. What we don't know, is where it will debut. Could we sit it hit Netflix? Traditional cable or free-to-air TV? Are you excited to see this materialize? I know I am.

NVIDIA delivers desktop-class performance to notebooks with Maxwell

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Oct 8, 2014 12:25 AM CDT

NVIDIA Editor's Day 2014 - Last month I was in Monterey Bay for NVIDIA's unveiling of their Maxwell architecture, where we saw the GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 unveiled. I was blown away at what Maxwell was able to do with the GTX 980, but even more impressed with what NVIDIA is now doing to notebooks with the mobile version of the Maxwell GPU, in the GTX 970M and GTX 980M.

Notebook gamers have been asking for "desktop class performance" from NVIDIA, and now they have it. This is where the new second-generation Maxwell architecture steps in.

NVIDIA's Fermi architecture was introduced in 2010, with the GeForce GTX 480M providing around 40% of the performance that the desktop version, the GTX 480, provided. Moving onto the Kepler architecture, where the GTX 680M provided around 60% of the performance of the full-blown GTX 680 on desktop, but now the Maxwell-powered GTX 980M is delivering around 80% of the performance of the insanely-efficient GTX 980 GPU on the desktop.

Samsung is preparing for a 60% drop in profits for Q3 2014

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Oct 7, 2014 11:38 PM CDT

Samsung is anticipating a massive drop in its profits for Q3 2014, with the company forecasting an operating profit of $3.8 billion for Q3 2014, which represents a massive 59.7% decline compared to the same three-month period from 2013. Total sales for the quarter are expected to be at around $43.9 billion, which is a 20% drop from the same quarter of 2013.

Analysts had expected much better results from the company, which just launched its Galaxy Note 4, and has had an extremely good run with its Galaxy S5 smartphone. But, these declines are going to represent the biggest the company has experienced in five years. Analysts were expecting the South Korean electronics giant to have operating profits drop by 42% to $5.52 billion, while sales were pegged at dropping 14% to $47.6 billion.

Right now, according to Sanford Bernstein analyst Mark Newman, Samsung's only strong spot on its upcoming earnings report is its memory department.

Sponsored Video - Think twice about buying that slower PC, says Intel

TweakTown Team | Computer Systems | Oct 7, 2014 9:47 AM CDT

We all know that upgrading your PC can be hard, but one of the key decisions of upgrading any PC is the processor. Most people will go Intel, and rightly so, the company has the best performing CPUs on the market.

The advertisement shows a frustrated user who is sitting at his brand new PC, and it crashes. Time slows down, and then goes in reverse, where he regrets his decision of buying the competition, walking back to his PC store and changing his mind. Intel puts this down to 6 simple steps when buying a new PC.

This includes the Processor Speed, RAM, HDD, Graphics Card, Software and Extras. Intel processors run faster, use less power, and if you have the money to spend, can scale up to incredible speeds that make your desktop PC closer to a supercomputer from just a decade or so ago with up to 16 threads on the latest Core i7-5960X.

Assassin's Creed Unity rendered at 900p at 30FPS on both Xbox One, PS4

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Oct 6, 2014 9:39 PM CDT

Assassin's Creed: Unity has been confirmed to be running at 900p at 30FPS on both the Xbox One and PS4, according to Senior Producer Vincent Pontbriand in an interview with VideoGamer.

Pontbriand said: "We decided to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff". Weirdly, the new Assassin's Creed title is not held back by the GPU side of the AMD-powered APU found inside of both of the consoles, but the CPU side of the silicon. Pontbriand explained: "Technically we're CPU-bound. The GPUs are really powerful, obviously the graphics look pretty good, but it's the CPU [that] has to process the AI, the number of NPCs we have on screen, all these systems running in parallel".

"We were quickly bottlenecked by that and it was a bit frustrating, because we thought that this was going to be a tenfold improvement over everything AI-wise, and we realised it was going to be pretty hard", he continued. "It's not the number of polygons that affect the framerate. We could be running at 100fps if it was just graphics, but because of AI, we're still limited to 30 frames per second".

Bitcoin value drops to just $290 over the weekend, as investors cringe

Michael Hatamoto | Business, Financial & Legal | Oct 6, 2014 1:10 PM CDT

The lack of central-backing of bitcoin, among other long-term concerns, has left investors worried about bitcoin - and the value of the most popular cryptocurrency dropped to just $290.83 over the weekend. The sudden decrease was a shocking 18 percent drop in less than 24 hours, though have increased at the start of the week back up to $330.

"It's actually a lot harder to get bitcoins than it is to spend them and there have been some suggestions that that's caused a supply/demand imbalance... PayPal integration would also improve that onboarding process," said Hugh Madden, bitcoin exchange ANX co-founder.

It's true that a growing number of companies are accepting bitcoin payments from customers, but the cryptocurrency's volatility, related to speculative trading, will remain a problem that won't go away anytime soon.

Bill Gates says that Bitcoin is 'better than currency'

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Oct 6, 2014 1:41 AM CDT

During the Sibos 2014 financial services industry in Boston, Bill Gates weighed in on the Bitcoin discussion, where he was asked about the digital currency and its potential to ease the cost of payment transactions for moving money from one place to another.

Gates was in favor of Bitcoin, where he said: "Bitcoin is exciting because it shows how cheap it can be. Bitcoin is better than currency in that you don't have to be physically in the same place and, of course, for large transactions, currency can get pretty inconvenient". Gates said that there will be a time in the near future where financial transactions will "be digital, universal and almost free".

Although Gates had positive things to say about Bitcoin, it wasn't all good news, as he is worried over the anonymity of the digital currency. He added: "The customers we're talking about aren't trying to be anonymous. They're willing to be known, so Bitcoin technology is key and you can add to it or you could build a similar technology where there's enough attribution where people feel comfortable that this is nothing to do with terrorism or any type of money laundering". After the mammoth year Gates had this year, I'm interested why he's not investing heavily into Bitcoin, yet?

HP rumored to split into two companies, consumer and enterprise

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Oct 6, 2014 12:45 AM CDT

According to The Wall Street Journal's sources, HP could be splitting itself into two separate companies, under the same roof. One side of the new HP would deal with its PC and printer operations, while the other would do software and services to its corporate and enterprise customers.

We should hear about the deal sometime today, according to The Journal's sources, with the separation to take place sometime in 2015. This could all be part of Meg Whitman's plans, as the fresh CEO of HP, joining back in 2011, promising a five-year restructuring project. This restructuring project included a major overhaul of the printer and PC business in 2012, and layoffs totaling 45,000 staff, which saves the company some $4.5 billion per year.

Microsoft rakes in more money from Samsung than it does from Xbox

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Oct 5, 2014 11:12 PM CDT

Microsoft might not make much money from its Windows Phone division, but that doesn't matter: it makes up for it in droves with the royalty fees from Android handset owners such as Samsung and HTC. It was recently revealed that Samsung has handed over $1 billion per year to Microsoft for the use of these royalties, making Microsoft bundles of cash for doing, well, not much at all.

Considering the Entertainment and Devices Division, where the Xbox brand, Kinect and Xbox Live sit, oh and not to mention Skype, and Windows Phone, only made $848 million last year - the $1 billion Microsoft raked in from Samsung means the company made more from its loyalty fees to just one company - Samsung - than it did for all of those massive brands and divisions, combined.

Remember, this is just the money Samsung pays Microsoft, and doesn't represent all of the other Android handset manufacturers on the market. Microsoft has quite the stranglehold on Android it seems, with the Chinese Ministry of Commerce approving Microsoft's purchase of Nokia having Microsoft said the authorities: "concluded after its investigation that Microsoft holds approximately 200 patent families that are necessary to build an Android smartphone".

iPhone 6 prototype hits eBay with a current bid of $58,660

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Oct 5, 2014 8:26 PM CDT

Someone has been sent an iPhone 6 prototype 'accidentally', with the person throwing it up to eBay straight away with a starting bid of $999. The Beverly Hills, California based iPhone 6 owner has offered free shipping if the price exceeds $4,000 - but at the time of writing, the current bid was a massive $58,660.

The iPhone 6 prototype does not feature FCC markets on the rear of the device, or a model number, and its Lightning port is red - proving that it is indeed a prototype. iOS 8 isn't on the device, with the iPhone 6 sitting in Developer Mode. 'kimberlyk1018' has said on the eBay page: "This device is being sold as is. I cannot guarantee that it will make calls or that the camera will work. However I can guarantee you that the device is a 64gb iPhone 6 which was sent to me from Verizon. The device comes with the box, charger, headphones and wall charger as well as all the paperwork. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. This is a once in a life time opportunity for you to take a part of".

But, $58,660 for the iPhone 6 prototype? How many of the recent bids would you say are Apple's bids to get their prototype back?

Google could revolutionize the TV market with modular display tech

Anthony Garreffa | Displays | Oct 5, 2014 7:40 PM CDT

The TV space hasn't had anything exciting happen to it since we shrunk down from CRTs to LCDs, but Google could be involved with the next big thing: modular, snap-on or snap-off displays. Google's secret Google X lab is working on the exciting technology.

The Wall Street Journal is behind the report, giving it some weight, teasing that the Mountain View-based search giant is working on a new display that will be made up of smaller screens that are interconnected to form a seamless image. This provides huge potential, as consumers and users alike could just snap on as many screens as they wanted to have a super-sized TV, or disconnect a few and use it as a smaller display for their monitor or gaming machine.

The biggest roadblock for Google right now is designing a seamless display that doesn't have borders, but this technical hurdle is "as large as the planned screens". The WSJ's sources have said that Google is bringing in the big guns to help them, with former MIT professor Mary Lou Jepsen leading the project. She founded three separate startups that focused on display technology, where she ended up as the head of the display division of Google X. Jepsen's team already includes ex Qualcomm and Samsung staff, among others from some of the biggest names in the industry.

The NVIDIA Tegra K1-powered HTC Nexus 9 slides through the FCC

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Oct 5, 2014 9:33 AM CDT

We've been hearing many more teases about the Nexus 9 than we have about the Nexus 6, with HTC reportedly behind the construction of Google's upcoming, and hopefully Android L-powered slate.

The Nexus 9 has now hit the FCC, leaving behind some details on what we can expect. The tablet appears as the 0P82100, but the filing doesn't offer too much that we don't already know. The filing itself is what we needed, to know that it is indeed, real. We can expect NVIDIA to be powering the Nexus 9 with its Tegra K1 processor, 2GB of RAM, Wi-Fi and cellular options, built into a beautiful aluminium frame.

We will hear it all on October 8, at HTC's Double Exposure event, where we should also hear about the Desire Eye smartphone, which features 13-megapixel front-facing camera, and HTC's upcoming action camera, that will fight directly against GoPro's newly announced Hero4.
