Nintendo Switch may use Display Port over USB Type-C

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 22, 2016 3:13 PM CST

We've long known that Nintendo's new Switch transforming handheld hybrid would have a USB Type-C port in its dock, and now it looks like the system may leverage Display Port over USB 3.1 for all sorts of benefits including the ability to transmit data, video and power in the same port.

Nintendo Switch may use Display Port over USB Type-C

According to The Wall Street Journal's Takashi Mochizuki, who cites reports from Ace Research Institute analyst Hideki Yasuda, the Nintendo Switch will leverage Display Port Alternate Mode over USB Type-C for a host of additional functionality.

Display Port Alternate Mode over USB Type-C can enable 4K 60Hz with 24-bit color, 5K (5120 x 2880) display support without compression, HDR, HDCP 2.2, high-end multi-channel audio--but we're not saying that the Switch will do 4K 60FPS or even 5K for that matter, just the general benefits that this particular mode can offer, depending on the bandwidth and graphics horsepower.

Project Scorpio won't be $399, and here's why

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 22, 2016 2:04 PM CST

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter recently predicted that Microsoft's new "monster" Project Scorpio 4K console would cost $399, and ship in 2018 instead of Holiday 2017. But don't expect to pay only $400 for the hardware; Pachter's wrong, and here's all the reasons why.

Project Scorpio won't be $399, and here's why

"The Xbox Scorpio is priced at $399. This might not be low enough, particularly if PS4 Pro drops before holiday 2017, but Microsoft has to price competitively or fall farther behind," Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter predicted in a recent article on Games Industry Biz.

We think Pachter is quite wrong about that price, and here's why.

Nintendo Switch hits High 1080p Unreal Engine 4 preset

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 22, 2016 7:38 AM CST

Yesterday we reported on the Nintendo Switch's uncovered Unreal Engine 4 display profiles, asserting that the console-and-handheld hybrid would use medium 1080p settings. But it appears we might've been wrong: the Switch could use high 1080p settings within Unreal Engine 4, effectively going toe-to-toe with the PS4 and Xbox One's base in-engine GFX settings.

Nintendo Switch hits High 1080p Unreal Engine 4 preset

Based on the Unreal Engine 4 Scalability Reference Guide given to us by one of our readers, we can see that our original scale that assumed 1=low, 2=medium and 3=high settings was off the mark. Instead, Unreal Engine's scale goes like this: 0=low, 1=medium, 2=high and 3=Epic (ultra).

This effectively means that the Nintendo Switch's UE4 display profiles score in the high and medium settings category, respective to the docked console and handheld form factors.

Analyst: Twitter is 'toast', stock isn't even worth $10

Anthony Garreffa | Internet & Websites | Dec 22, 2016 5:14 AM CST

Twitter is circling the drain right now, with Global Equities Research's Managing Director Trip Chowdhry saying that Twitter is "toast" and "not even a $10 stock". Harsh words, but with the departure of another top level executive this week, he could be right.

Josh McFarland, VP of Product at Twitter said he was leaving the company on the same day that Twitter's Chief Technology Officer Adam Messinger tweeting that he is leaving the social networking company to "take some time off". They added onto the pile with Adam Bain, Chief Operating Officer of Twitter, who was replaced by Chief Financial Officer Anthony Noto, for now.

Chowdhry continued: "Many investors were foolishly building (an) investment thesis based on complete stupidity". Twitter shares closed at $17.92 on Tuesday, so if Chowdhry is right and Twitter stock drops to $10, it would be a 44% drop from where it sits today. Chowdhry added that Twitter data quality is "horrible", and that many pollsters used Twitter data to predict Hillary Clinton's win - but with Donald Trump winning, it shows that Twitter's data isn't very valuable at all.

Apple rumored to buy a Hollywood studio in 2017

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Dec 22, 2016 2:14 AM CST

Apple is making strategic movies to get into the TV and movie industries, with Mega founder Kim Dotcom - yeah, Kim Dotcom, predicting that Apple will purchase a massive Hollywood studio in 2017.

Dotcom tweeted: "Watch Apple buy a Hollywood Studio in 2017. #InsiderIntel". It would make sense, considering how massive some of these TV shows are getting these days on Netflix, HBO, etc. Apple has had interest in the film industry for a while, with the company having a "strong but secretive" presence at the Sundance Film Festival.

Apple reportedly met with "triple A-list" talent to talk about making a lineup of original TV shows, and even more of a tease - Apple is working with Hollywood studios to bring movies to iTunes, "even while they're still in theaters" reports 9to5Mac.

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Dec 21, 2016 11:28 PM CST

Change your passwords guys - Marvel and Netflix are the latest high profile targets for hacking group OurMine, which had many of their Twitter accounts hacked today.

Hacking Group OurMine, whose previous targets include Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Mark Zuckerberg successfully exploited multiple Marvel accounts including those associated with feature films hits such as 'Guardians of the Galaxy', 'Doctor Strange', 'The Avengers', 'Captain America' and 'Ant-Man', leaving behind their trademark message. Netflix also found themselves under the gun, with the streaming platform struggling to regain control of their account over the span of a few hours. All accounts have now been cleaned of the unwanted tweets, but Netflix did leave behind a little acknowledgment memento.

Analyst: Nintendo Switch to be sold out until September

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Dec 21, 2016 10:34 PM CST

Nintendo is slowly building the hype for its next-gen Switch console, but according to a 'What To Expect In The Games Business' article on GamesIndustry.biz with analysts and people involved in the gaming industry - Nintendo is going to have a massive year in 2017.

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Patcher talked about Nintendo and their Switch sales in 2017, where he said: "The Switch is sold out through September. The console looks fun, the price appears to be right, and I expect demand to be high. If there is a lot of third-party support (games, not merely labels), I think demand remains high".

I would have to agree, Nintendo is going to be selling Switch consoles like hotcakes. As Patcher points out, if there are a lot of third-party games and support from game publishers, Nintendo's new Switch console could be a huge deal in 2017.

Xbox Scorpio to be priced at $399, could slip into 2018

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Dec 21, 2016 9:06 PM CST

We don't know much about Microsoft's next-gen Xbox Scorpio console, apart from the fact that it'll be a 4K gaming console that handles VR and has 6 TFLOPs of performance - but what about price?

I've been expecting Microsoft to nail $699 since it'll be a premium console, but Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter has said that Xbox Scorpio "is priced at $399", where he adds: "This might not be low enough, particularly if PS4 Pro drops before holiday 2017, but Microsoft has to price competitively or fall farther behind".

I think we'll see Xbox Scorpio coming out at $599 or so, and ushered in as a premium console with "Made for 4K" games as Dan Pearson of GamesIndustry.biz puts it. I want to see 1080p 60FPS as the minimum option, while 4K 30FPS (ugh) will be offered because the 4K buzzword marketing hype machine will demand it.

AMD's next-gen Vega 10 GPU granted RRA certification

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Dec 21, 2016 7:16 PM CST

We all know that AMD's next-gen Vega 10 GPU is getting closer and closer to becoming a reality, but now both Vega 10 and the upcoming Polaris 12 chip have received RRA certification.

First off: what's this RRA certification? South Korea's National Radio Research Agency is a regulatory body that approves any silicon-based electronic product before it can be pushed out into the consumer market. AMD's upcoming Vega 10 and Polaris 12 GPUs have received RRA certification, which means they're getting much closer to being physical products and not just pre-production boards like we were teased with during the AMD Tech Summit 2016 running DOOM at 4K 60FPS+ on Ultra settings on Vega 10.

So now the game becomes a question of what graphics cards we'll see from Vega 10 and Polaris 12. First off, let's tackle Polaris 12 - which should arrive as a highly tuned Radeon RX 460 which we've been teased about over the last couple of months. AMD stated there would not be a faster GPU under the Polaris family, so don't expect a Radeon RX 490 which blows the hinges off the doors of performance.

Next-gen NVIDIA Shield TV spotted, may rock Pascal Tegra

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 21, 2016 5:17 PM CST

We've heard rumblings that NVIDIA will unveil a new Shield TV Android set-top box powered by its new Pascal architecture at CES 2017, and now some leaked images have popped up to show what the next-gen micro-console may look like.

Next-gen NVIDIA Shield TV spotted, may rock Pascal Tegra

NVIDIA may not launch one, but two new Shield TV consoles in the near future--a standard model with an accompanying controller and remote, and a smaller set-top box that could have some features shaved off to reduce price. It's possible that the new Shield TV duo may be based on NVIDIA's next-gen Parker Tegra X2 SoC, which uses a Pascal GPU and is based on the 16nm FinFET process.

As for a new NVIDIA Shield tablet, we might not see one this time around, which could be the reasoning behind the cheaper, smaller Shield TV variant. Although FCC filings hinted that the device was in the works, but NVIDIA has apparently scrapped the tablet so it didn't interfere with the new Nintendo Switch, which is powered by an NVIDIA Tegra processor and uses a hybrid tablet that transforms into a console when docked.

Apple might launch iPhone 7s and iPhone 8 next year

Lana Jelic | Mobile Devices | Dec 21, 2016 4:38 PM CST

September 2017 is far away, but there are already many rumors about the next iPhone. The new rumor, posted on Chinese tech blog cnBeta, suggests that Apple is developing three iPhone models for next year.

According to the report, Apple will launch two upgraded iPhone 7 models, likely branded iPhone 7s and iPhone 7 Plus. The third phone, codenamed Ferrari, is the real star of the leak cause it will supposedly rock a borderless OLED display, wireless charging, and more.

The new iPhone will reportedly feature the same Touch ID home button, but it would integrate into the display itself, eliminating the bottom bezel 'chin.'

ASRock Fatal1ty and Extreme4 Z270 motherboards detailed

Derek Strickland | Motherboards | Dec 21, 2016 3:18 PM CST

Specs and details ASRock's new Fatal1ty and Extreme4 Z270 motherboards have surfaced, giving us a good look at the boards ahead of their CES 2017 showcase.

ASRock Fatal1ty and Extreme4 Z270 motherboards detailed

With Intel's seventh-gen Kaby Lake CPUs on their way, hardware-makers are busy readying their fleets of new 200-series motherboards, giving consumers lots of possible upgrade mobo paths to Z270 chipset adoption. ASRock's new Fatal1ty Gaming K6 and Extreme4 mobos use the LGA1151 socket and support both 7th-gen Kaby Lake and 6th-gen Skylake processors, and also have native support for Intel's new high-end Optane 3DXpoint 3D NAND SSD storage lineup.

Let's start with ASRock's Extreme4 Z270 motherboard. This is a standard ATX motherboard that features HDMI, DVI-D, and D-Sub display slots (no DisplayPort), three PCIe 3.0 x16 lanes (two of which are outfitted with steel bracing) that support up to three AMD GPUs in CrossFireX or two NVIDIA GPUs in SLI.

Overwatch's Bastion reborn as epic 3D printed PC build

Derek Strickland | Cases, Cooling & PSU | Dec 21, 2016 2:17 PM CST

Armed with a 3D printer, a lot of gumption, and technical prowess, PC case modder Jan Erik Vangen has built a custom PC inside of Overwatch's favorite chirpy robot.

Overwatch's Bastion reborn as epic 3D printed PC build

Bastion was crafted piece-by-3D-printed-piece using a MakerBot Replicator, and was then assembled like a basic Gundam model and hand-painted by Vangen (yes, he even chirps!). The result is a stunning rendition that will have any Bastion fan in total admiration mode.

Since form factor is an issue, the mech-turned-chassis doesn't have a fully-fledged gaming PC with a dedicated desktop GPU inside, but it still is fully capable of playing Overwatch. Instead of a fully-fledged PC, Vangen fastened an ASRock Beebox-S mini-PC inside of Bastion's chest.
