Boeing 787 Dreamliner glitch can make it lose power, FAA reports

Chris Smith | Software & Apps | May 1, 2015 9:41 PM CDT

In a bid to make skies safer, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned that a software fault could result in loss of power mid-flight on the gigantic Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Discovered by Boeing themselves in private testing circumstances (not real flight), this issue can occur if the aircraft is not powered down between trips, resulting in the generator systems on board switching to fail-safe mode and seeing all AC power cut - mid air or not.

This issue is said to take 248 days of usage for the fault to occur, rendering it as an unlikely thing to happen in real-world circumstances. However, this model of aircraft has reportedly experienced some other issues resulting in extended boot up times.

We have just seen reports of AMD once again trying to better NVIDIA, reportedly trying to take would-be GTX 960 owners under their wing.

The method they've decided to take is cone again that of a price cut, seeing their R9 285 video card see a drop to 180 Euro ($201 US) when compared to the pricing of a GTX 960 at 192 Euro ($215 USD).

AMD's option does have the issue of slightly higher power consumption and noise ratings, so is the saving of $14 US enough to entice you away from the big green?

Robots in UCSF hospital utilize 'virtual railroad' to get the job done

The 'Eve' robot is being utilized at the University of California, San Francisco, Medical Center at Mission Bay, a new facility that opened in February. The robots can help humans, make test sample deliveries, and ensure each room has supplies as needed.

UCSF purchased 25 robots from Aethon for $3.5 million, and then invested an additional $2.5 million to prepare the robots and hospital. The hospital expects to break even within two years on its robotic investment, while also freeing up staff to conduct other tasks.

"The hospital is set up almost as a virtual railroad... if they encounter an obstacle along the way, that's when they use their various sensors, laser, sonar and infrared to navigate around those items and continue on their path," said Brian Herriot, director of Mission Bay operations planning for the UCSF Medical Center, in a statement published by NBC News.

Techland delays Dead Island 2 to 2016, needs more time for perfection

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | May 1, 2015 2:36 AM CDT

Techland has announced that it has delayed Dead Island 2 into 2016, saying that they need more time to make the game perfect. Dead Island 2 was meant to be one of the first games to make great use of Epic Games' impressive Unreal Engine 4, but we won't see it until next year.

The developer has released a statement, where they've said: "We have always set ourselves a big goal for Dead Island 2: to create the sequel that takes Dead Island to the next level. A game that takes what our fans tell us they love about Dead Island - multiple different characters to play with, co-op, and turning a paradise setting into a zombie slaughter melee - and a game that adds a ton more content and combat options on top of that".

"And we wanted to have all of that that done for release in Spring 2015", they continued. "We have been looking at the game long and hard, and we have decided we didn't reach that goal we set out to achieve quite yet. This is why we have decided to delay Dead Island 2 to 2016. Right now we are focusing purely on development, and we will have more info to share at a later stage. We know that our fans will be disappointed by this news, but by giving Dead Island 2 more time we are confident that everyone will get a better game to play as a result".

Furious 7 becomes one of the most successful films in history

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | May 1, 2015 1:43 AM CDT

With Furious 7 being in cinemas across the world for around a month now, it has grossed over $1.3 billion making it one of the most successful movies of all time. It was only 12 days ago that we reported it had crossed the $1 billion mark, too.

Furious 7 has become the fourth most successful movie of all time, pushing Frozen and Iron Man 3 out of its way, as well as the last Harry Potter film to get its place in history. Entertainment Weekly's Jonathan Dornbush reports: "These totals are, of course, unadjusted for inflation. When that's taken into account, Deathly Hallows: Part 2 would still sit above Furious 7 for the time being-but the global ticket sales for the action film represents the incredible forward momentum Furious 7 has carried in the month since its release". He continued: "Furious 7 became the biggest film at China's box office, and will likely rank among the highest earners in the U.S. for 2015 when the year comes to a close".

One of the more interesting facts on Furious 7 and its $1.3 billion haul, is that most of it has come from international ticket sales. Furious 7 has only made $323 million in the US, compared to The Avengers which pulled in $623 million domestically, Furious 7 is a much bigger hit outside of the US.

Tesla unveils Powerwall, an Internet-connected battery for your house

After quite a while of teasing, Tesla has unveiled its home battery: Powerwall. Tesla's new Powerwall home battery system allows people to disconnect from the power grid for a few hours, which isn't perfect, but it will have significant power savings for countless people around the world.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the new Powerwall is a "whole integrated system that just works and is connected to the Internet". Powerwall is packed with lithium-ion cells and a liquid thermal-control system, with Powerwall being tested with specific customers for the past year. The home battery connects to the Internet so that it can track power usage and share the information with utilities.

How much will Tesla's Powerwall set you back? Right now, the 10kWh system is offered to installers for $3500, while the 7kWh will cost people $3000. These two systems do not include the cost of a DC-to-AC inverter, but if you've already got solar panels, you won't need that additional DC-to-AC inverter. Distributors can lease the Powerwall to consumers, with the Tesla-made device including a 10-year guaranteed life with warranty, and will begin shipping in late summer.

HBO's CEO doesn't want to directly cater to binge watchers

Michael Hatamoto | Internet & Websites | Apr 30, 2015 11:33 PM CDT

HBO CEO Richard Plepler isn't a "reflexive proponent of binge-watching," so don't expect Game of Thrones or True Detective to be dumped onto HBO Go or HBO Now. However, subscribers are able to watch entire seasons of older content on HBO, but newer shows will not be available for binge watching.

"I don't think it would have been a great thing for HBO or our brand if that had been gobbled up in the first week," Plepler recently said during a Washington Post event. "I think it was very exciting for the viewer to have that mystery held out for an extended period of time."

Plepler explained to journalist Cecelia Kang the importance of making viewers wait for new episodes:

Microsoft release age detection tech demo

Ben Gourlay | Internet & Websites | Apr 30, 2015 11:15 PM CDT

If you've been seeing some hate leveled at Microsoft on social media today, odds are it's due to a new online tool released by the company which attempts to gauge your age from an uploaded photo.

According to the Machine Learning Blog, The 'How Old Do I look?' website is based on the "APIs available in the Azure Machine Learning Gallery. The gallery contains many finished intelligent services such as Face, Speech, and Vision which are part of a new suite called Project Oxford from Bing and Microsoft Research." and took only a day to put together.

For the record, the site guesstimated that I was 36. I'm 29. But they were nice enough to apologise in advance with "Sorry if we didn't quite get the age and gender right - we are still improving this feature."
