Apple iPad software glitch causes flight delays for American Airlines

Michael Hatamoto | Software & Apps | Apr 29, 2015 1:05 PM CDT

American Airlines was forced to delay "more than a couple dozen" flights following problems with an app installed on Apple iPad tablets used by pilots. Some pilots had to return their aircraft to the gate, while others said they fixed the third-party app problem during passenger boarding.

"Some flights are experiencing an issue with a software application on pilot iPads," according to a statement released by American Airlines. "In some cases, the flight has had to return to the gate to access a Wi-Fi connection to fix the issue."

The airline became the first company to convert pilots fully to electronics for navigation and flight plans, so any data changes can be made quickly and efficiently. American Airlines claims it saves over 400,000 gallons of fuel each year, and millions of pages of paper documents were replaced with just 8,000 iPads.

CD Projekt Red says 'there's no loading times' for The Witcher 3

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Apr 29, 2015 4:44 AM CDT

We already know that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a gigantic game, but with a game of that size, one lingering question remains: how much time will we spend in loading screens? Well, none. Zero. Zilch.

Senior Environment Artist on The Witcher 3, Jonas Mattsson, said during an interview with Gamespot that there are "no loading times". This is a big deal, where he continued: "No, there's no loading times. Only when you actually start the game, when die and load the game, or when you fast travel. That fast travel loading time depends on how far you have to travel of course. If you just fast travel a little bit, it's a really short loading time".

Mattsson continues: "One of the goals we had, was to keep the experience as fluid as possible. When you play, you don't want to have the loading screen because it takes you out of the game a bit. We wanted to make sure that it was as smooth as possible, one big experience. For us, that was really important. I think we achieved that because, as you said, just going in and out of a building, there's no loading time. Nothing. It's just creates this really nice experience".

Surface Pro 4 should be powered by fanless Broadwell chip, Windows 10

With Windows 10 getting closer and closer, news of the Surface Pro 4 is starting to hit. Microsoft's upcoming Surface Pro 3 successor is rumored to have quite the spec sheet, including Intel's fifth-generation Core processor.

The rumored specifications have the Surface Pro 4 featuring a Broadwell processor from Intel with a fanless design "but with tiny holes for heat radiation", and "no noise" because of the fanless logic board according to Windows Central. The 12-inch display will remain, with its 2160x1440 resolution, and of course, Windows 10.

Microsoft's use of the U-series Broadwell CPU will still generate heat, but the little holes in the Surface Pro 4 should let out most of that heat, allowing for cooler operation. We should expect Microsoft to unveil the Surface Pro 4 as part of its launch during Windows 10, which flies out the window sometime in July, according to AMD.

Oculus secures 'one of the top display innovators' from Google

We still don't know if Oculus VR will be releasing the Oculus Rift this year, but the Facebook owned VR giant has just announced it has secured two very important people to join its growing team.

Mary Lou Jepsen, who is "one of the top display innovators in the world" has joined the Oculus team along with Anna Sweet from Valve. Jepsen has been honored as "one of the 100 most influential people in the world in Time Magazine, is the Pixel Qi founder, as well as as co-founder and former chief technology officer of non-profit One Laptop Per Child" reports Polygon. Before she joined the Oculus team, she was the heads of the display division of Google X, one of the most secretive parts of Google.

Under her new position at Oculus, Jepsen will be "developing displays that will make it possible to push the boundaries of virtual reality technology". In a statement, Jepsen said: "Virtual reality has been seen as a niche product for the wealthy. Like One Laptop Per Child's vision of computers for the poorest children, we imagine VR as an enabling technology, a platform for mass adoption, for women and men, adults and children, rich and poor, everywhere".

Hacker discusses his role in helping 'king of revenge porn'

Michael Hatamoto | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Apr 28, 2015 5:30 PM CDT

Hunter Moore, the "king of revenge porn," hired Charlie Evens when he was 23-years-old to hack into women's social media and email accounts. Evens sold images and videos for Moore's website, IsAnybodyUp.com, making between $500 and $1,000+ a week for his services.

It wasn't anything personal against the women that made their way to IsAnyoneUp, as Evens was fresh out of rehab and needed money to fund partying: "It was enough. I mean, not that anything is enough, but it's just scary how quickly I would drop my morals for so little. How much those women were worth, it was like $500 a week, $1,000 a week. It was just pay. I mean it was really just my habit. Like I needed to drink... I know nobody wants to hear that, but it was a really shitty time for me," Evens told CNN.

Evens also discussed how hacking victims was "a little maneuvering and manipulating... lying and using people" to breach their email or social media. His crimes led him to be indicted by the FBI for conspiracy, unauthorized access to a protected computer, and aggravated identity theft. The former hacker says he still battles with how he can apologize to the countless people whose private information was posted online without their permission.
