ARM teams up with LG on DTV

Sylvie Barak | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Jun 22, 2009 1:37 PM CDT

British chip shop ARM has announced it will be teaming up with LG Electronics, to combine ARM's tech with an up and coming LG line of digital televisions (DTV).

The press bumf claims the ARMed DTVs should give consumers a crisp 1080p video experience from their very own living room telly, not to mention Internet connectivity, Web 2.0 features, next generation 3D graphics and all that entails. This is down to the firm's Mali-200 and Mali-400 MP graphics processors.

ARM's Mike Inglis, EVP and GM of the firm's Processor Division, said punters had been pushing for this kind of home tech for a while now, in order to enjoy sharing their digital media from the comfort of their, ehem, ARMchair.

Apple sells one million 3G S iPhones in 3 Days

Sean Kalinich | Mobile Devices | Jun 22, 2009 10:35 AM CDT

It is time for an iPhone 3G S update; after all it is the Monday after the big release. Here is how it all stands

For sheer numbers Apple managed to push over one million of these out the door. The 3G S remains un-jailbroken and cannot be unlocked just yet (although 2G and 3G phones can be jailbroke and the 2G can be unlocked with redsn0w).

The iPhone 3G S has received mix reviews that range from perfection to claims of it not being worth it. With all that Apple still managed to get a ton of these out to the public, which means that Apple still has it where the iPhone marketing it concerned.

72 x 160 Foot screen used for Gears of War

Sean Kalinich | | Jun 22, 2009 9:45 AM CDT

This is just plain cool; can you imagine playing Gears of War on a 72x160-foot screen? Well the Steve Fatone could and actually did just that are the new Dallas Cowboys stadium in Texas.

He connected an Xbox 360 to the giant screen and went at it. Everything went well except that the remote controller would lose connection when anyone got too far from the box.

Check out the video courtesy of Engadget.

US FTC wants to clamp down on Bloggers

Sean Kalinich | | Jun 22, 2009 9:04 AM CDT

There is a rule in government that says, ignore something for a long time and then go overboard when you finally decide to act.

This has been shown time and time again with such items as piracy, privacy, pornography, and now with bloggers and product reviews. This new one comes in the form of the US Federal Trade Commission looking into products sent to bloggers for review by companies as well as payments (ads) and affiliate links.

They want to force bloggers (without defining that term at all) to disclose any product or payments received from a company related to any reviews done. While on the surface this seems a good thing, it can get pretty muddled as most sites survive by ads samples sent are free advertising for the company sending as well as the site posting the review (even a bad review is good press).

Apple Gives iTunes Credit For 3GS Activation Issue

Zac O'Vadka | | Jun 22, 2009 2:45 AM CDT

Apple is trying to make amends for their iPhone 3GS activation issues that forced some to wait as long as 48 hrs to activate their new toys.

For those unaware, AT&T customers that attempted to activate their new iPhone were suffering severe delays due to high volume and "system issues." It seems that Apple thinks your two days of pure frustration should be covered with a $30 iTunes gift card.

Istanbul Opterons Finally Available

Zac O'Vadka | Processors | Jun 22, 2009 2:15 AM CDT

Many have been waiting for quite some time to upgrade their Socket F systems with AMD's Istanbul six-core Opterons and it looks like they are finally available.

For those in Japan, it looks like AKIBA PC Hotline has spotted a few in the wild on retail shelves. If you're not lucky enough to find one on the shelves near you, they are available online as well. Newegg has a few of them, but sadly they don't seem to have 2.6GHz Opteron 2435 available.

Intel buys more shares in Imagination

Sylvie Barak | | Jun 19, 2009 5:58 PM CDT

Intel has snapped up more shares in British firm, Imagination Technologies, a designer of video chips, buying 25 million more shares in the firm and taking Chipzilla to 13.99 per cent ownership.

"Intel Corporation has already licensed several generations of Imagination Technologies Group plc's graphics and video IP cores for deployment in Intel's PC, mobile computing and consumer architectures," said a company press release, announcing it now held 32 million shares in the designer of video chips for digital radios, media players, mobile phones and navigation devices. That's rather a lot of Imagination.

Intel shows off new tech at R&D day

Sylvie Barak | | Jun 19, 2009 2:56 PM CDT

Intel's Chief Technology Officer, Justin Rattner used R&D day in Santa Clara to announce his firm would be bunging platform power management (PPM) tech into upcoming Moorestown processors, claiming this would reduce power guzzlage by a whopping 50x compared to today's Atomic offerings.

Apparently PPM is achieved through actual changes to the silicon itself, allowing the Moorestown hardware to communicate with the Operating System and lower power quicker through an innovative approach discussed briefly at Computex, HUGI (Hurry Up Get Idle). The way this supposedly works is with a system automatically sending idle apps to sleep, powering them up instantly on user demand.

The chip firm also demoed a beefed up version of Quake Wars: Ray Traced", based on the game "Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars" from id Software and Splash Damage, showing off wonders like souped up support for dynamic objects and polygonal water simulation on a 2x Intel Xeon W5580, Nehalem EP, running at 3.2 GHz.

Activision considering Dropping Sony

Sean Kalinich | | Jun 19, 2009 9:54 AM CDT

Ok this one is pretty darn big; it looks like Activision might drop Sony if they do not drop prices on the PS3 and PSP. According to TimesOnline Activision CEO Bobby Kotick is not happy with the royalty fees, the hardware pricing and the failing sales of the PS3.

According to the article Activision paid $500 million to Sony in royalties and other goods last year alone. This is a large amount to be paying into a company that lost money (Sony Games Division).

He wants Sony to drop prices to something more reasonable or he might consider dropping the platform.

Modern Warfare 2 could be best seller for 09

Sean Kalinich | | Jun 19, 2009 8:37 AM CDT

Modern Warfare 2 is generating some substantial interest. This is not surprising as the first Modern Warfare is probably one of the best combat simulation games ever made. The inclusion of the Specter Gunship was pure genius, most people I know that own that game still go back and play that part over and over in arcade mode (I know I do).

So it is no surprise to hear that analysts are saying that Modern Warfare 2 will be the largest game launch of 2009. Activision is putting some serious marketing money behind the game to make it happen.

Some might say that removing the Call of Duty from the title will hurt Modern Warfare 2 but in reality most who follow the game will know what it is. I do not see the new branding hurting the game at all.

Iranians bypass Internet Censors with Yauba

Sylvie Barak | | Jun 18, 2009 7:05 PM CDT

As the disturbing events unfold in Iran, with reports of Internet censorship and government crackdowns on communications as the political unrest continues, a search engine developed in India is providing a ray of hope for those trying to tunnel under the radar.

Indian developed Yauba.com is touted as the world's first privacy safe, real-time search engine, offering Iranian protesters anonymous access to information from outside the country which would otherwise have been blocked by Iranian censors.

AMD to put SATA3 in SB800 South Bridge series

Sylvie Barak | Storage | Jun 18, 2009 4:04 PM CDT

AMD may be getting its Mojo back and gearing up to give Intel a bit of a bloody nose, with industry sources telling us the firm is planning to include SATA3 in their SB800 South Bridge series due out in the first quarter of next year.

If this is indeed the case, it would mean littler chipper (AMD) could even leapfrog Intel in Southbridge technology, something which we are currently taking with a pile of believe-it-when-we-see-it salt, as AMD have something of a track record of being a generation behind Chipzilla on SB tech.

Another industry source told us AMD would definitely have SATA 3 native on SB800 but that USB3 would likely not be and would require a third party chip.

iPhone 3G S sales will be half what the 3G was

Sean Kalinich | Mobile Devices | Jun 18, 2009 12:53 PM CDT

Analysts are saying that this weekend Apple could sell half a million iPhone 3G S handsets. This is a rather large number and is significantly less than either the 3G bought in with its launches.

Although some are saying it is due to the limit on the number of countries that are getting the 3G S, after all 21 countries had the 3G at its launch while the 3G S will only be released in 8.

The low number could also be due to the relatively minor improvements made to the new 3G S; including a complete lack of any outside improvements to the appearance of the phone.

ATi Stream not ready for Prime Time yet

Sean Kalinich | Mobile Devices | Jun 18, 2009 11:13 AM CDT

In the race for OpenCL/Cuda performance it looks like ATi is not doing so hot. In a good read over at Anandtech we are told that ATi's stream processor is just not there in terms of GP-GPU computing.

To test this Anandtech used ATi's new CyberLink's Espresso and ran it on an ATi GPU, an Nvidia GPU and a CPU.

The results were interesting. The ATi card was not only slower than the nVidia GPU (and in a couple of cases slower than CPU only) it also produced very poor quality video compared to the CPU and nVidia GPU.

Intel to skip over Havendale 45nm?

Sean Kalinich | | Jun 18, 2009 10:21 AM CDT

There has been a lot of talk about GlobalFoundries and their move to 32nm HKMG (High-K Metal Gate. Now while the semantics of the announcement are correct, they will indeed be the first "foundry" to have 32nm HKMG but will they really be the first?

In an interesting read Digitimes is saying that Intel will be the first company to get to 32nm HKMG not directly but in a manner of speaking. If their story is true Intel is going to skip the Tock portion of the Havendale CPU at 45nm and dive straight into Clarkdale at 32nm.

iPhone OS 3.0 includes 45 fixes and Patches

Sean Kalinich | Mobile Devices | Jun 18, 2009 9:34 AM CDT

The new iPhone OS has made its way to many a happy iPhone user. This is a good thing as it means that iPhone users can now finally join the ranks of other smart phone owners with such exciting features as Copy and Paste, Tethering and Voice control.

But with these come some interesting extras. Aparrently hidden in the new update are 45 patches that cover vulnerabilities in the old iPhone OS. This would seem to fly in the face of Apple's normal stance of "our hardware and software is completely secure".

Do not get me wrong, I think the inclusion of fixes and security patches is great and Apple is doing the right thing by making sure they get out to iPhone owners. I just wish they would knock off the BS that OSX and iPhone OS are more secure than other operating systems out.

Intel's new branding is a confusing mess

Sylvie Barak | | Jun 17, 2009 5:58 PM CDT

It would appear that Intel has gone a bit bonkers, with the firm revealing a new branding strategy which may as well have been written by Nvidia "experts." The 'enlightened' plan is to entirely scrap Core 2 branding in favour of Core i3, i5 and i7 along with Atom, Celeron and Pentium.

Intel's Bill Cader writes in a blog post that the firm has taken "a hard look" at its brand structure, and has decided it's all too much for us numbskulls to understand, forcing the firm to come up with a "more rational and easier" system.

ASRock launches dual core Atom Netbook

Sean Kalinich | Laptops | Jun 17, 2009 10:18 AM CDT

ASRock has a new netbook out that features not only ION but a Dual Core Atom 330. The new G22 is a 12.1 inch device, putting it right on the edge between a netbook and a thin and light. The big difference being the Atom CPU.

The G22 will not have a DVD-drive, but will support multi-touch, b,g, and n wireless, gigabit Ethernet and a few other very nice features.

There is no word on pricing or availability yet but this one bears watching if you are looking for an above average netbook to tote around.
