Google Voice ported to Cydia
We told you this morning how Apple rejected Google's Google Voice app.
Apple's reason was that the Google App mimicked features already present on the iPhone. Well, this has not prevented it from existing.
It has been ported and out up on Cydia for download. That is right; once again the jailbreak crowd has found a way around Apple's iron fist.
Rumors say Asus and Acer delaying Netbooks
I have been reading an interesting rumor about the Netbook market. It says that Asus and Acer are delaying netbook launches until 2010. The netbooks in question are Acer's upcoming Dual boot (XP and Android) offering and Asus' Android based model.
One of the reasons, the rumor goes on to say, is that Intel delayed Pinetrail until next year. The Acer delay is also being linked to supposed research showing a dual boot netbook is not something that will not work in the market just yet (I could have told you that). I would have thought that lesson would have been learned after the initial Linux based launches.
I wanted to know if there was any credit to the rumor so I contacted someone I know at Asus and asked directly. The response was interesting but not truly conclusive.

AMD launches their Fastest Pro GPU yet
AMD/ATi has been having a pretty good year. In addition to beating nVidia to 40nm and actually getting a 40nm part in the market first (although supply is still an issue) they have shown DX11 parts while nVidia has been lagging behind.
So it comes as no surprise to hear that AMD has launched a new 3D Workstation part. This new part is an addition to their "Fire" line of cards. Called the FirePro V8750 it is the fastest that AMD has made to date.
AMD put the FirePro V8750 up against the nVidia Quadro FX4800 and found that it was able to keep up and in many spots outperform the Quadro.

Apple rejects Google Voice
I often find the strangest things funny. For example I actually find it funny that Google is being stifled by Apple. I cannot really explain why; it is just funny.
Maybe it is because when using the iPhone I am stuck with Google Maps (unless I want to pay for another service). Or, that my only option for search is Google. Perhaps it is that Google and Apple have a shared director.
Still it is somewhat comical to see applications like Google Latitude and Google Voice get rejected by Apple. Apple's reasons for doing this? Well for Latitude Apple felt that people would confuse it with the current Map application. For Google voice it is that it duplicates existing iPhone functions.
GT300 still on track for Q4 2009
With AMD's recent announcement that they will be launching a complete line of DX11 parts in time for the Windows 7 launch we have to wonder what nVidia has up their sleeve.
Many are saying that nVidia has nothing or at least nothing new. In fact several of the better known anti-nVidia gang are claiming that nVidia will only be launching refreshed parts or little more than a Die-Shrink.
They claim that what is to become the GT300 will not hit the market until mid to late 2010.

Windows 7 actually brings better performance
As Windows 7 approaches retail release there have been more questions about what it is bringing to the table besides a re-worked UI. Well if you look beyond the new clothing that MS has wrapped the Vista Kernel in you will find a pretty impressive feature set.
In Windows Vista one of the problems was its heavy foot print. This was further exacerbated by Vista's dislike of releasing memory once an application was finished with it. But beyond having better memory usage Windows 7 brings DX11 to the table. DX11 is bringing a host of new features to gaming. These will be the inclusion of a Physics API, adding a tesselator, and a host of other improvements and added features.
But DX11 is not just for gaming; for the first time applications will be able to selectively choose the processor they run on. I am not just talking about the CPU cores, but being able to choose between GPU and GPU on the fly.

More Rumors of an Apple Tablet Popup
Yeah, more Apple rumors! We have been hearing rumors and denials about Apple's plans to make a tablet for about two years now. Ever since the netbook came out people have been speculating that Apple will have to release their own version to compete in the small, low-power and inexpensive market.
However, when anyone has asked Apple they have always replied that they cannot make an inexpensive device that is not junk. (Which is actually funny when you really look at the cost of the parts though.)
All that aside, there has been some rumblings again about a possible new Apple tablet. First is was Apple buying small 10-inch multi-touch screens, then is was a large flash memory purchase, after that it was a carrier saying they would subsidize one if it were made. Now we have a financial paper claiming that Apple might release one in September.

Runcore Easy 3 Step Upgrade for SSDs demo in China
During the launch of the new Runcore Pro IV SSDs here in Hangzhou today, we also got a look at the newly launched Runcore Easy Three Step upgrade process for its full range of SSDs.
Runcore bundled some software on all its new SSDs, which allow for easily upgrading your HDD to an SSD. It allows you to entirely move over all files and the actual file system (MBR) and OS from your old drive to your new SSD. Software is included to support both Windows and Mac systems, depending on which SSD you buy, the appropriate software will be included.
The process is rather simple, as you'll see in the video below. Matt from Runcore shows us just how it is done. Runcore has really gone out of its way to make the upgrade process as simple as possible and will probably end up selling more drives as a result.

Exclusive hands-on with Runcore Pro IV 1.8" SSD
We are here in Hangzhou, China in the technology and development area (or HEDA as it's known officially) at the moment visiting the Runcore office to get a hands-on look at its range of Pro IV SSD drives that will launch later today and go on sale very soon.
We spent some time exclusively testing the new Runcore Pro IV, specifically the 1.8-inch Micro SATA 128GB. We compared the performance of this new SSD against a standard notebook HDD in two identical Lenovo X301 laptops. We confirmed that no funny business was going on and that both systems were identical in terms of setup, clock speeds and so on.
Take a look at the video below. We have an unboxing, look at the tiny SSD, performance numbers, boot up and shut down time comparisons and more.

AMD Could have Fusion ready by 2012
AMD's fusion has been an ongoing project for some time now (actually going back to just after the AM2) but as with many AMD projects and products nothing has been seen on this future advancement.
Of course now that Intel has shown off silicon that features a dual die setup (CPU and IGP) we are starting to hear more from AMD about this.
The latest news is that the Fusion will be ready by 2012 and should hit the stores as a 22nm CPU. This is great news, but I cannot help but wonder if we will see a similar launch like the Barcelona.

Rage to be designed for the console
Well it looks like Rage from id Software will be primarily aimed at the console market. This is in line with what John Carmack said back in 2008.
This is an interesting departure from id's normal work. Usually id titles hit the PC and then are later ported to the console if there is a big demand for it (like Doom). So why the shift to the console? Well if I were a betting man I would say that is the popularity of the newer consoles combined with online access they all now have. I would also add that porting from console to PC is usually easier than PC to console.
id has said that there will be a PC version with a little better graphics but that it will be split onto two DVDs for the install. However, since it is being designed for the console first it will be like many console ports and have controls that will feel awkward and clumsy on the PC unless you use a console style controller.

And another netbook hits the market
Good grief, it seems that everyone has a netbook or a "net" system now. Phone companies are giving them away, stores are marking them and now even monitor manufacturer Viewsonic has one. The funny thing is that they are all about the same in terms of hardware so one is just about as good as another.
The Viewsonic offering is called the VNB101 and has the typical Intel Atom N280, 1GB DDR2 RAM, and the standard 160GB HDD. Nothing new to see here; except perhaps the space for a 3G SIM and a Lithium-Polymer Battery. It does look a little like an Asus with some added color but then again most netbooks look alike anyway.
But here is the rub, as with anything inexpensive to build and sell, there is a saturation point that kills the market. I think we have just about hit that point. Furthermore the marketing for the netbook/nettop is terrible. They are being marketed as inexpensive laptops. That is something they are not; just ask anyone that has tried to use to replace a standard one and you will see.

iPhone 3G S encryption hacked in 2 minutes
Apple might have gone a little overboard in their description of how secure their iPhone 3G S is. I know this will come as a shock to no one (except a few very hardcore Apple Fans). After all Apple continuously claims that OSX is not vulnerable to crashes, viruses, hacking etc.
The rub is that on Apple's website they state

Xbox with Natal could be out in H2 2010
If you are into the Xbox 360 then there is some potentially good news for you.
The blunder made by Steve Balmer in announcing that Natal would come to the Xbox in 2010 could be correct and not a mistake.
The evidence that points towards this is Aptina being hit up for a few 1.3 MegaPixel cameras (of the type that would be used by Natal). This could put the "Natal Xbox" in the stores in time for the holiday shopping season in 2010.

WebOS 1.1 fixes iTunes 8.2.1 blockade
With Jailbreaking and Unlocking there is a strange game of cat and mouse played between the jeailbreakers and Apple. It would appear that this game has also extended to the new Palm Pre.
Palm has released its new Web OS 1.1 and it fixes the issue that Apple just patched with the latest version of iTunes. So that means that you can still sync your Palm Pre with iTunes if you have the newest version of the Web OS.
Other improvements are emoticons and full exchange support, but between you and me the best part is Palm's back hand to Apple and their iron grip on iTunes.

AMD Ships 500 millionth x86 CPU
Ok this is pretty cool and bears some coverage. AMD has shipped it 500 Millionth x86 CPU. That is a pretty big number if you ask me. It comes in combination with AMD's 40th year in business. To celebrate AMD is giving away four HP Pavilion Dv2Z notebooks.
The contest is part of AMD's recent plunge into social networking and will be a twitter based contest. The way this works is that you have to follow @AMD_Unprocessed on twitter. Every other Monday starting on the 27th of July @AMD_Unprocessed will tweet an AMD related question. You should answer Via Direct Message these correct answers will be put into a drawing for one of the four Dv2s. This cycle will repeat for the next two months.
Not too terribly hard to enter, or course you never know what question they will ask, but I am sure that whatever it is can be found quickly by checking out AMD's website unless I am completely missing the mark.

49 Port USB 2.0 Hub hits the market
So what do you get the Geek who has everything? Normally I would say a date with a real girl but barring that I would say that a 49 port USB hub would about cover it.
Yes, you read right. There actually is a USB hub with a full 49 ports on it. The device is being made by Cambrionix and is selling under the inspired name of "49 Port Professional USB Hub." And can be picked up for around $650 US dollars.
It is actually being marketed as a development and testing hub (which makes sense really) and appears to be a useful tool for mass testing of USB flash drives.

Fujifilm shows off compact 3D Camera
There is nothing like a new cool gadget and Fujifilm has one. This is a 3D Digital camera for the masses. The new camera is a small compact device that is capable of capturing 3D Images that are viewable without the need to special glasses.
The concept behind the capture is surprisingly simple; through the use of two lenses (similar to the old stereoscopic viewers) the camera is able to combine different fields of view (depth) into an image or movie that is fully 3 dimensional.
Fujifilm will also offer a special printing process for these images. The new FinePix REAL 3D W1 should hit the stores in Japan early next month followed by a general release late next month.

Mushkin prepares an Ultimate HD 4850
It was not that long ago that Mushkin announced its UltimateFX line of add-in video cards. The announcement showed that Mushkin was ready to enter the world of graphics (just like OSZ did) and they had some nVidian offerings in the works.
Today we hear that Mushkin is now working on an UltimateFX version of the Radeon HD4850. The new Radeon HD 4850 will feature a completely custom build. The cooling system looks a lot like the one found on the Sapphire HD4670 offering though. Specs are; 800 stream processors, 256-Bit memory interface, 625MHz/1986MHz CPU/Memory stock clock and 700/2020 for the OCd version. There will be three ports for output (DVI, D-Sub and HDMI).
All this will come in a handy wooden box. There is no indication on when you can get these nor how much they will cost you once ready.

Intel reduces prices on SSDs
Intel has just announced their release of a 34nm NAND flash cell in an SSD. But while this is pretty cool news all on its own; the real news is that this will reduce the price of the existing 50nm versions.
According to Intel the move will help reduce the prices of the 50nm MLC SSDs by up to 60%... but that is 60% off of the original prices not current market prices.
The new pricing for the X-25-M 80GB will be $225; this is indeed 60% of the original $595. The problem is that you can get the X25-M 80GB for $324 from NewEgg this makes the new reduced price about 30% off the current market. The 160GB flavor of the X25-M will be $440, you can get the X25-M 160GB for $629 right now.
