Gaming to make record-breaking $197 billion in 2025, PC revenue almost ties console

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 19, 2025 1:31 PM CST

The worldwide video games industry is expected to make $197 billion in 2025, a new all-time high that's driven in part by recent software and hardware price increases.

Gaming to make record-breaking $197 billion in 2025, PC revenue almost ties console

The global video games market will generate $197 billion throughout this year, analyst firm Newzoo predicts. 2025's revenue figures represent a significant 7.5% year-over-year increase, which can be attributed to a number of factors, including higher prices, wider content availability, and other things like accounting and revenue recognition practices.

The platform breakdown also underlines why Microsoft is pushing so hard into the PC space. According to Newzoo's estimates, mobile will lead the charge this year with a megaton $108 billion in revenue, representing more than half of the total--55%. What's interesting is just how close PC and console are to each other; console is to make $45 billion revenue, up 4.2% and representing 23%, where PC is close behind with $43 billion, making up 22% of the total.

Another beefy NVIDIA TITAN Ada prototype GPU appears: 48GB GDDR6X, quad-slot, 900W power ready

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Dec 19, 2025 3:34 AM CST

This week we've got a new NVIDIA TITAN Ada prototype GPU reveal, after a new model appeared in China, in a cleaner condition than the recent teardown treatment overclocker "der8auer" performed. Check it out

Another beefy NVIDIA TITAN Ada prototype GPU appears: 48GB GDDR6X, quad-slot, 900W power ready

The sample that der8auer had in his hands wasn't a one-off GPU, as there is now another NVIDIA TITAN Ada prototype GPU in the wild, with the two retail-style boards and coolers in the wild. Both of them look more like finished graphics cards rather than prototype lab-bound hardware.

The GPUs have been praised for their mechanical details and regular driver behavior, which is something you don't normally see from engineering samples that have exposed test boards and debug switches, but in a parallel universe I'm sure these 900W GPU beasts exist, and I want one.

AMD's future-gen Zen 8 'Penelope' and Zen 9 'Nemesis' CPU leaks, both on new AM6 socket

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Dec 19, 2025 2:22 AM CST

AMD will be launching its next-gen Zen 6 CPUs next year, but after that -- and after Zen 7 -- we've got the new Zen 8 and Zen 9 processors that some juicy new leaks have just provided us with purported codenames of AMD's future-gen Zen chips.

AMD's future-gen Zen 8 'Penelope' and Zen 9 'Nemesis' CPU leaks, both on new AM6 socket

In a new video from leaker Moore's Law is Dead, we're hearing that Zen 8 is codenamed "Penelope" and Zen 9 is codenamed "Nemesis" and that both new CPU architectures will be on AMD's next-gen AM6 socket. AMD's upcoming Zen 6 processors will debut on AM5 extending the lifespan of current motherboards, while Zen 7 is also expected to debut on AM5 before AMD moves onto the newer AM6 socket for Zen 8 and Zen 9.

We should expect to see Zen 8 and Zen 9 processors launching sometime 2029-2030 and 2032-2033, respectively, both on the new AM6 socket and we should also see PCIe Gen6 and DDR6 memory support, but hopefully the DRAM shortage has worked its way out of the system by then.

Sony v Tencent copyright lawsuit settled, offending Light of Motiram game pulled from stores

Sony's copyright lawsuit against Tencent has ended, and both parties have agreed to settle for an undisclosed sum.

Sony v Tencent copyright lawsuit settled, offending Light of Motiram game pulled from stores

Back in July, Sony sued Tencent in a copyright lawsuit, alleging that the Chinese games-maker created a product that was too close to Sony's Horizon franchise to be a coincidence. Tencent's so-called 'Horizon clone' had been titled Light of Motiram, and Sony's original 48-page legal complaint laid out side-by-side comparisons that showed stark similarities between the two games.

Now it's been revealed that the case has been dismissed. Sony and Tencent have reached a "confidential settlement," the court filing says, and the Light of Motiram game is no longer available on Steam or the Epic Games Store.

Report: Starfield coming to Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 in first half of 2026

New reports from Windows Central reiterate Microsoft's plans to release Starfield on non-Xbox platforms.

Report: Starfield coming to Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 in first half of 2026

Months ago, there were rumblings that Bethesda is preparing to launch Starfield on Switch 2 and PS5. Now we have a possible release window for the RPG: sources tell Windows Central that the new Starfield port could launch sometime in the first six months of 2026.

That's a pretty wide timeline, but it's also worth mentioning that next year will be one of the biggest moments in Microsoft history: Xbox turns 25, and Bethesda also celebrates its 40th anniversary. The studio will want to capitalize on this momentous occasion, so a cross-platform release of Starfield in 2026 makes sense, and this also leaves the game plenty of clearance from the sales crater that GTA 6 will cause.

Kojima won't use AI to create art, thinks it could be useful for responsive enemy design

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 18, 2025 12:29 PM CST

Legendary creative Hideo Kojima has an unsurprising take on AI: The dev doesn't want to use it to create any kind of visual art, and thinks the technology could be used for things like enemy responsivity in games.

Kojima won't use AI to create art, thinks it could be useful for responsive enemy design

Following record spending highs during COVID-19, the games industry has now simultaneously contracted while raising prices. Every publisher and developer is feeling the financial pressures, with many shedding workers en masse in an effort to improve margins and assuage shareholder fears. Everyone is looking for ways to save money and reduce labor costs; enter generative AI, new tech that could potentially even replace game developers.

AI has proven to be significantly controversial, and rightly so, because video games are a full conjunction of all creative arts--static art, animation & motion capture, audio. The industry's workforce is one of creativity and developers are pushing back against AI, however teams have embraced the tech in a bid not to be left behind. This kind of motivation seems to be the main driver of AI's global adoption; no one wants to miss out on the Next Big Thing.

NVIDIA launches new NVIDIA RTX PRO 5000 72GB Blackwell GPU

Kosta Andreadis | Graphics Cards | Dec 18, 2025 10:02 AM CST

The new NVIDIA RTX PRO 5000 72GB Blackwell GPU, which the company says is now available, offers a memory-focused configuration that will sit alongside the existing NVIDIA RTX PRO 5000 Blackwell GPU with 48GB of VRAM. The new variant is targeted at AI developers, scientists, and creatives who require hardware for "modern, memory-hungry workflows."

NVIDIA launches new NVIDIA RTX PRO 5000 72GB Blackwell GPU

With generative AI and the rise of complex, multimodal agentic AI, NVIDIA notes that today's large language models (LLMs) and AI agents are growing in both complexity and size - necessitating the release of a beefier NVIDIA Blackwell GPU. With 72GB of ultrafast GDDR7 memory, 50% more than the current 48GB model, and a memory bandwidth of 1,344 GB/s, you're looking at 2,142 TOPS of AI performance.

Naturally, having access to 72GB of GDDR7 memory on a 512-bit interface will allow AI developers to train, run, and tweak models locally. This adds an extra layer of privacy and reduces latency compared to a cloud-based solution.

Elder Scrolls 6 coming 2028 at the earliest, possible delay to 2029

Jak Connor | Gaming | Dec 18, 2025 12:31 AM CST

There are only a few games that gamers cannot wait to get their hands on. The first is Grand Theft Auto 6, which might be the most anticipated game of all time, and the one that follows closely behind that is Elder Scrolls 6, the sequel to Skyrim.

Elder Scrolls 6 coming 2028 at the earliest, possible delay to 2029

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released in 2011, and since then, we have only received a brief teaser trailer for the sequel to the acclaimed title, which was released in 2018. Following that teaser, we have only heard brief mentions of Elder Scrolls 6 from Bethesda's Todd Howard, who has said the title is the studio's focus and that it will take as long as it needs to meet fan expectations.

However, Kiwi Talkz, an interviewer known particularly for Bethesda and Valve interviews with developers and industry members, recently wrote on X that he expects we won't see Elder Scrolls 6 until at least 2028, with the more likely release window being sometime in 2029. According to Kiwi Talkz, Bethesda isn't giving a rough date as it will "do more harm than good," especially after the studio announced the game "too early".

Game development is now affected by the RAM crisis

Kosta Andreadis | Gaming | Dec 18, 2025 12:07 AM CST

If you've been tracking PC hardware prices, you've probably noticed that high-capacity DDR5 memory kits now cost more than a PlayStation 5. And with the DRAM crisis affecting any piece of hardware with memory, alongside rising storage costs, several analysts and companies are predicting that the situation will only get worse throughout 2026, potentially leading to historic consumer shortages.

Game development is now affected by the RAM crisis

Yes, even though the insatiable demand from data centers and AI is leading memory makers to focus on expensive, cutting-edge HBM with high margins, they're still unable to keep up. Micron, which recently shuttered its consumer-facing Crucial brand to focus on high-bandwidth memory for AI, recently noted in its latest earnings report that supply will remain "substantially short of the demand" for the "foreseeable future."

What does this mean for gaming, specifically high-profile AAA-style experiences with a focus on immersive and detailed visuals? Well, a fundamental shift in how game developers will approach making games for the "foreseeable future." And with that, game developers will be forced to optimize performance for systems with limited RAM and VRAM.
