TL;DR: NVIDIA's DLSS 4.5 update introduces Dynamic Multi Frame Generation for GeForce RTX 50 Series, enhancing performance on high-refresh-rate 4K and 1440p displays by adapting frame generation in real-time up to 6X. It improves smoothness, efficiency, and image quality in many popular games.

When NVIDIA debuted DLSS 4.5 earlier this year, it released only the first half of the update: the new DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution, which introduced a powerful transformer-based upscaling model that delivered a notable improvement in image quality. The upgraded DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution offers its biggest benefit when playing games at 1440p or 4K using the Performance preset, delivering native-like results with a significant performance boost.

Today, the second half of the DLSS 4.5 update arrives for GeForce RTX 50 Series owners, featuring DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation with up to 6X Multi Frame Generation. Now, even though the latter might look like NVIDIA simply adding more AI-generated frames to boost smoothness and perceived performance, it's the DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation that's the most interesting.

Multi Frame Generation was built for the GeForce RTX 50 Series to take advantage of modern high-refresh-rate displays, with 4K 240 Hz and 1440p 360 Hz monitors becoming increasingly popular options. DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is the natural evolution of Frame Generation technology, as it allows users to set a target frame rate that represents the maximum refresh rate and resolution of their display, and then let Dynamic Multi Frame Generation do the rest.

And with that, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation will only generate the frame needed on a moment-to-moment basis, whether that's 2X, 3X, 4X, or the new 6X. It's a technology that also plays into modern cinematic single-player games, where different scenes, locations, and actions can see performance fluctuate depending on what's happening on screen.

"By continuously monitoring the gap between your GPU's performance and your display's maximum refresh rate, the system adapts in real-time," NVIDIA explains. "In graphically intense scenarios, it 'upshifts' and increases frame generation to bridge performance dips, ensuring your high-refresh display remains buttery smooth. Conversely, as the workload lightens, it seamlessly shifts the multiplier down to only compute what's needed."

DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is now available to enable in hundreds of DLSS 4-compatible titles via the NVIDIA App's Graphics tab. The DLSS Override feature can be enabled on a per-game basis or globally, with options to set a target FPS and a maximum Frame Generation multiplier. That last bit is great to see, as some might find the 6X multiplier a little too aggressive. That said, DLSS 4.5 also improves Frame Generation with better frame pacing, efficiency, and image quality, including static objects like UI elements. Although Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation are exclusive to the GeForce RTX 50 Series, GeForce RTX 40 Series owners will also benefit from the new and improved Frame Generation.

Some of the titles that you can experience Frame Generation smoother performance with improved image quality include, Battlefield 6, Borderlands 4, Cyberpunk 2077, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, EA SPORTS F1 25, God of War Ragnarok, Hogwarts Legacy, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, Star Wars Outlaws, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and The Outer Worlds 2.
