AMD ships over 25,000 Radeon RX Vega graphics cards

Anthony Garreffa | Video Cards & GPUs | Aug 26, 2017 9:47 PM CDT

You can't knock AMD for getting Radeon RX Vega onto the market, and while it might have been late and not received as well as some thought, the cards are here - and there are tens of thousands of them so far.

AMD ships over 25,000 Radeon RX Vega graphics cards

I spoke to an industry source who didn't want to be named today, who said that AMD have shipped over 25,000 cards in the last two and a half weeks since Radeon RX Vega hit the market. Remember that AMD has only launched Radeon RX Vega 64, and not the Radeon RX Vega 56, which will be the more popular card of the two.

AMD will be launching Radeon RX Vega 56 very soon, and as we get closer to it, I will be doing much deeper testing into the real-world gaming performance of it. We'll be doing tests with DOOM, Quake Champions, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, and more at 1080p, 1440p, and 3440x1440.

Palmer Luckey: should I buy Vive?

Oculus founder and VR pioneer Palmer Luckey may make an offer to buy HTC's virtual reality division.

Palmer Luckey: should I buy Vive?

Due to consecutive losses from its smartphone division, Taiwanese tech giant HTC may sell off its Vive VR subsidiary in an attempt to stabilize, sources say. Palmer Luckey, who sold Oculus to Facebook for $2 billion, has expressed interest in making an offer for the Vive VR branch--if HTC ends up selling, of course. "What do you guys think, should I buy Vive?" Mr. Luckey asked the official Oculus subreddit, to which most users responded in the affirmative.

While demand and hype for enthusiast-grade PC-powered VR has cooled down in terms of sales, key OEMs and HMD-makers are ramping up for the next generation of VR headsets. This new generation is expected to include major benefits over the initial wave including wireless HMDs with self-contained hardware, use of more advanced and efficient chips and technologies, and some will even blend Augmented Reality (AR), which projects simulated images over the real-world, in an attempt to tap the Mixed Reality market.

WD's 20TB My Book Duo: 20TB external storage made easy

Anthony Garreffa | Storage | Aug 25, 2017 11:35 PM CDT

Western Digital has always been one of the leading charges of storage, but now they've just unvieled their huge 20TB My Book Duo, their highest-capacity external storage system ever.

WD's 20TB My Book Duo: 20TB external storage made easy

WD's new 20TB My Book Duo rocks RAID-optimized WD RED HDDs, which work in RAID 0/1 and JBOD. When the drives are in RAID 0, they're capable of 360MB/sec, which isn't too bad at all. WD includes USB 3.1 Type-C connectivity alongside USB 3.0 Type-A ports that let you connect USB flash drives and other USB accessories into your PC.

Price wise, WD has the 4TB model at $280, while the 20TB model shifts up to $800 - not bad considering there's 20 freaking terabytes of storage available.

Anthony Garreffa | Displays & Projectors | Aug 25, 2017 10:10 PM CDT

Samsung unveiled its huge super-wide 32:9 aspect ratio display earlier this year, but now the company has shown it off to gamers at Gamescom 2017 in Cologne, Germany.

Samsung teases its massive 49-inch 32:9 gaming display

Samsung's new CHG90 QLED Gaming Monitor rocks a massive 49-inch panel with a never-before-seen 32:9 aspect ratio, twice as wide as a 16:9 panel, and even wider than the current crop of 21:9 aspect ratio UltraWide displays. Samsung's new CHG90 rocks a 3840x1080 resolution, providing the horizontal pixels of a 4K display, but the vertical pixels of a 1080p panel.

Inside, we have the hardcore gaming worthy 144Hz refresh rate,. but Samsung also lets you knock it down to 60/120Hz if 144Hz isn't your thing. We also have FreeSync/Active Sync support, with a 1ms response time and Game Mode options that gamers can play with on the Samsung CHG90.

Xbox One X is fastest-selling pre-order in Xbox history

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 25, 2017 6:33 PM CDT

Microsoft's new $499 Xbox One X console sold out special edition pre-orders in just a day's time, and the company's marketing division is positively jubilant. But there's more that meets the eye here.

Xbox One X is fastest-selling pre-order in Xbox history

The Xbox One X's limited Project Scorpio edition is the "fastest-selling pre-order in Xbox history," Microsoft touts proudly on a new Xbox Wire blog post. But what does that actually mean? Without solid pre-order numbers for the Project Scorpio edition or even a hint of hardware allocation, this milestone may actually not be that impressive.

Xbox's marketing division is quite creative at cleverly obfuscating information and technicality-filled PR-speak. Just look at how the company re-defined the world "exclusive" at E3 2017, misleading gamers with terms like "console launch exclusive", as well as saying that games are "Xbox exclusive", a term that loses its merit now that Xbox is a service that includes Windows PCs and Xbox One consoles. Xbox executive Aaron Greenberg recently said that

AMD Radeon RX Vega shortage until October

Anthony Garreffa | Video Cards & GPUs | Aug 25, 2017 6:05 PM CDT

Earlier this year my exclusive story about AMD only having around 16,000 units of its Radeon RX Vega graphics cards for the most proceeding the launch, and here we are now - with news that AMD will experience stock shortages until October.

AMD Radeon RX Vega shortage until October

According to DigiTimes' sources, AMD won't have Radeon RX Vega in larger numbers until October. Other sources claim that AMD are having issues with their Advanced Semiconductor Engineering packaging technology, but you know what? It doesn't matter what problems AMD are having, from their perspective - the Vega launch is nothing but a gigantic success.

But then you read the comments from people all over the internet calling the Vega launch the "worst GPU launch ever" and that it's "worse than the Fermi/GTX 480 launch"... and all I can do is agree. This isn't good, and we're not getting the full truth from AMD. The other thing that sucks is that AMD had such a great year from Ryzen and Threadripper, but Vega wasn't just mediocre, it has bombed.

Xbox One X sold out in a day, expected to last a week

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 25, 2017 4:31 PM CDT

The demand for Microsoft's new high-end 4K-ready Xbox One X console has surprised the Redmond-based company, with pre-orders of the machine selling out in less than a day's time.

Xbox One X sold out in a day, expected to last a week

Despite Microsoft's original assertion that the mid-range Xbox One S would be the most popular system this holiday, gamers are apparently very hyped about the new native 4K-capable Xbox One X system. The first batch of pre-orders for the Project Scorpio special edition of the Xbox One X sold out much quicker than Xbox execs planned--in fact company executive Aaron Greenberg said that Xbox One X pre-orders sold out in less than a day.

"We sold out at Amazon in less than 25 minutes. We expected our inventory to last for about a week, and we sold out in less than a day," General Manager of Xbox Games Publishing Aaron Greenberg said in a recent interview with Rocket Beans TV.
