Buying a 1TB M4 iPad Pro will get your double the RAM and an extra CPU core thrown in

Oliver Haslam | May 8, 2024 12:30 PM CDT

Apple announced the brand-new M4 iPad Pro yesterday alongside the new M2 iPad Air and the Apple Pencil Pro, not to mention the revamped Apple Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro. There was plenty announced during the event, but it's the M4 iPad Pro that's particularly notable. It's a hugely powerful tablet and one that comes with plenty of RAM and storage. But it turns out that if you pick two particular storage options you'll also get some other things thrown in for good measure, too.

Buying a 1TB M4 iPad Pro will get your double the RAM and an extra CPU core thrown in

Apple didn't make a big deal out of the news when it announced the M4 iPad Pro, but it's since been discovered that anyone who spends the extra $600 to upgrade from 256GB of storage to the 1TB model (or higher) will also get an additional CPU core and twice as much RAM.

Apple has historically not chosen to give details about what cores the iPad has and how much RAM is offered, but in the case of the M4 it turns out that the base model with 256GB of storage comes with an M4 chip that has a 9-core CPU. But if you then choose to buy a 1TB or 2TB storage option you'll actually get an M4 chip that has a 10-core CPU instead. You'll still get the same number of GPU cores so there is nothing of note there, but it's interesting that Apple is putting two versions of the same M4 chip into the same tablet here.

Google chose the worst possible time to announce the Pixel 8a budget Android phone

Oliver Haslam | May 8, 2024 12:15 PM CDT

It's impossible to miss the fact that Apple announced the new M4 iPad and M2 iPad Air yesterday alongside a new Apple Pencil Pro and a refreshed Magic Keyboard, but did you know that Google also announced a new product? You probably didn't, because it chose to announce it on the same day that Apple sucked all the air out of the room. Which is a shame, because the phone is actually pretty good.

Google chose the worst possible time to announce the Pixel 8a budget Android phone

The Pixel 8a was a phone that we'd seen leaked here and there in recent weeks, a phone that offers people the chance to get their hands on a new phone with high-end features at a price that doesn't cost high-end figures. The Pixel 8a is sure to be a popular device, as well as it should because it has a ton of features that make for a great experience. And at $499, it's going to be hard to beat.

Google's Pixel 8a features a new Actua display that measures 6.1 inches. It has a high-speed 120Hz refresh rate and is 40% brighter than the display that was already a solid option in last year's Pixel 7a. The good news doesn't end there, either, with a new 256GB storage option available for those who want it.

Apple's new iPad Pros feature dual OLED displays and are the company's thinnest devices ever

Kosta Andreadis | May 7, 2024 8:22 PM CDT

Apple has unveiled the new iPad Pro line-up, powered by the company's new 3-nanometer M4 chip. Available in two sizes, 13-inch and 11-inch, both feature the company's new 6K resolution Ultra Retina XDR display built with OLED technology.

Apple's new iPad Pros feature dual OLED displays and are the company's thinnest devices ever

Each iPad Pro uses two OLED panels to combine the light to "phenomenal full-screen brightness." We're talking 1000 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR content and 1600 nits of peak brightness for HDR.

"Tandem OLED technology enables sub-millisecond control over the color and luminance of each pixel, taking XDR precision further than ever," Apple writes. "Specular highlights in photos and video appear even brighter, and there's more detail in shadows and low light than ever before on iPad - all while delivering even more responsiveness to content in motion."

Buying a maxed-out M4 iPad Pro? You'll need to spend almost Apple Vision Pro money to do it

Oliver Haslam | May 7, 2024 1:45 PM CDT

Apple's brand-new M4 iPad Pro has officially been announced at today's 'Let Loose' event and, as expected, it's quite the beast. It comes with the new M4 chip, making this the first time that particular silicon has found its way into a device that we can buy. And it comes with a very impressive new OLED display, too. The M4 iPad Pro is every bit the flagship tablet. So it's perhaps no surprise to anyone who is paying attention that maxing one out is going to get very expensive, very quickly.

Buying a maxed-out M4 iPad Pro? You'll need to spend almost Apple Vision Pro money to do it

How expensive? The 13-inch iPad Pro starts at $1,299 so it's where we'll start as well. That's already more than enough for most people to start looking further down the lineup. But if you really do need everything the iPad Pro has to offer and have money to spend, it turns out Apple will very happily take $3,077 from you. To put that into perspective, the Apple Vision Pro costs $3,499 for the 256GB model.

How did we get that far? Well, that $1,299 asking price is just the base 256GB model so the most obvious way to spend more is to add extra storage. The 2TB option costs an extra $1,000 right out the gate, and then we get to the display. Such a gorgeous 13-inch display deserves the best, so let's add the nano-texture glass as well. It preserves the fidelity of the display while reducing glare and reflections, so why not?

Buying a new M4 iPad Pro or M2 iPad Air? You'll need new accessories and maybe a new SIM

Oliver Haslam | May 7, 2024 1:30 PM CDT

Apple today announced the new M4 iPad Pro and an updated M2 iPad Air, with both tablets now available for preorder. They'll both go on sale next week alongside the first Apple Pencil Pro and a refreshed Apple Magic Keyboard. And all of those things could make for an expensive upgrade.

Buying a new M4 iPad Pro or M2 iPad Air? You'll need new accessories and maybe a new SIM

Apple announced all of the new devices and accessories at the same time which should give you an idea of how intertwined they all are. And it turns out that buying a new iPad Pro or iPad Air could soon get expensive when you factor in that you could well need two new accessories. And then there's the matter of the SIM card you use in your old cellular iPad, too.

Starting with the accessories, new M4 iPad Pro buyers need to know that they won't be able to use their old Magic Keyboard or Apple Pencil with their new tablet. Apple says that the older magnetic Apple Pencils won't work because of the change in charging and attachment mechanism required for the Apple Pencil Pro, so that's an extra $129 that buyers will have to fork out. The USB-C Apple Pencil will work, but you'll lose out on all those cool features of the Apple Pencil 2nd-gen let alone what the new Apple Pencil Pro has to offer. Considering many new M4 iPad Pro buyers will upgrade from older models with the Apple Pencil 2nd-gen, a new stylus will be in order.

Apple slashed the price of its entry-level 10th-gen iPad and killed off the 9th-gen model

Oliver Haslam | May 7, 2024 1:00 PM CDT

Following Apple's Let Loose iPad event the company has confirmed that the 10th-generation entry-level iPad is no longer selling for the previous $449 asking price but has instead been reduced by $100. The new $349 price is much more befitting of a tablet at the lower-end of the iPad lineup, while Apple has had to cancel an older model to make space.

Apple slashed the price of its entry-level 10th-gen iPad and killed off the 9th-gen model

The previous-generation 9th-generation iPad was still being sold for $329 as a way to offer a cheaper option for iPad buyers. However, the price reduction of the 10th-generation model means that Apple has now discontinued the 9th-generation model, making way for the better tablet in the process.

The 10th-generation iPad comes with an A14 chip and has an all-screen design with Apple removing the Home button from the entry-level iPad for the first time. That move gave the model a new, more modern look when compared to the previous generation tablets and better matched that of the iPad Air and iPad Pro.

Apple just announced a new iPad Magic Keyboard and it might fix the old one's biggest problem

Oliver Haslam | May 7, 2024 12:30 PM CDT

Apple's big Let Loose iPad event has now come to an end and as expected, the company announced a number of new iPads as well as new accessories that will work with them. One of those accessories is the heavily rumored new Apple Pencil Pro, while the other is a revamped version of the Apple Magic Keyboard, and this new model is better than any of those that came before it - if only because the more rigid construction should stop it from flopping around so much.

Apple just announced a new iPad Magic Keyboard and it might fix the old one's biggest problem

Apple announced the keyboard by saying that it's a thinner and lighter option than those that came before it. The press release notes that it opens to a floating design that has already proven popular with customers while a new function row has been added to the top of the keyboard. That row adds support for things like display brightness adjustment keys as well as keys for adjusting the volume, among other things.

Other improvements include a new aluminum construction that should make the palm rest more rigid and less likely to bend, while the keyboard itself comes in both white and black color variants. Buyers will need to choose a different keyboard depending on the size of their tablet as has always been the case, with the 11-inch version selling for $299. Those who own a 13-inch iPad will have to pay a little extra, with Apple charging $349 for that version.

Apple announces the Apple Pencil Pro, its best stylus ever with a new gesture and more

Oliver Haslam | May 7, 2024 12:15 PM CDT

Apple has today announced a slew of new iPads as well as a couple of accessories to go with them and one of those accessories is an all-new stylus. Dubbed the Apple Pencil Pro, the new stylus is essentially a replacement for the Apple Pencil 2nd-generation but is exclusively compatible with the new M4 iPad Pro and revamped M2 iPad Air. That means that anyone who wants to be able to use one of these new Appel Pencil Pros will have to buy a new iPad to do it.

Apple announces the Apple Pencil Pro, its best stylus ever with a new gesture and more

The updated Apple Pencil was heavily rumored before today's Let Loose event, but it was expected that it would be called the Apple Pencil 3 initially. Then, a leak on the Japanese Apple website appeared to suggest that the stylus could carry the Apple Pencil Pro name and that's now been confirmed. As for whether the new features that it offers justify the name, that's another matter entirely.

That isn't to say that the new features aren't notable, because they are. The rumored squeeze gesture is present and correct and Apple says that it will allow people to quickly access the tool palette to switch tools, adjust line weights, and pick a new color without having to stop what they are doing. To go with the new squeeze gesture Apple says that it has also included a new haptic engine to allow the Apple Pencil to tap the user to provide confirmation when a squeeze has been registered.

Apple's new M2 iPad Air is here in an all-new 13-inch size, refreshed 11-inch model

Oliver Haslam | May 7, 2024 12:00 PM CDT

Apple's big Let Loose iPad event has now come to a close and the company announced everything that we expected it to. In fact, surprises were very few and far between which means that we saw Apple unveil the new iPad Air, the best and most powerful tablet ever to carry that moniker. The new tablet is available for preorder today with prices starting from $599, and it'll ship to those who preorder next week.

Apple's new M2 iPad Air is here in an all-new 13-inch size, refreshed 11-inch model

The updated tablet doesn't feature a big industrial design change although there are new colors for buyers to choose from. Apple says that the tablet can be had in charcoal gray, light violet, denim, and age while all of those colors are options whether or not you choose the smaller 11-inch version of the larger 13-inch tablet.

Yes, you read that right, and the rumors were true - Apple today added an all-new 13-inch model to the popular iPad Air lineup. The existing 11-inch version is still present and has been updated accordingly, but it's the addition of a new 13-inch version of the iPad Air that will likely capture many people's attention. It's the same size as the new OLED M4 iPad Pro, for example, but costs considerably less. The 13-inch iPad Air starts at $799 while the iPad Pro starts at an eyewatering $1,299. It's important to note that the iPad Air comes with 128GB of storage and the iPad Pro comes with 256GB, but for those who just want a bigger screen, the iPad Air is a great option at this price.

Global smartphone brand exposed to dangerous security vulnerabilities

Jak Connor | May 7, 2024 2:01 AM CDT

A group of cybersecurity researchers has discovered multiple security vulnerabilities within a wide range of software running on devices.

Global smartphone brand exposed to dangerous security vulnerabilities

According to reports, the global smartphone brand is Xiaomi, and its security flaws are present within its own implementation of Google's Android operating system, which is a different system to the one present on Android devices in the US. Security researcher and founder of mobile security startup Oversecured, Sergey Toshin, said his team found twenty vulnerabilities throughout the Xiaomi devices, ranging from holes in the settings application to the Bluetooth software.

Toshin said the most egregious of these security vulnerabilities would have enabled hackers to gain "system privileges," which may have led to user passwords being stolen and access to social media accounts.

Apple's first foldable might debut in next year, but it won't be an iPhone

Oliver Haslam | May 6, 2024 2:00 PM CDT

While there are plenty of foldable phones on the market right now Apple does not make any of them. The foldable iPhone is something that many have assumed that Apple has plans for but so far, there has been little to suggest that a launch is imminent. Now, a new report suggests that Apple is readying a foldable device for next year - but it won't be an iPhone,

Apple's first foldable might debut in next year, but it won't be an iPhone

That's according to Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu in a research note seen by 9to5Mac. According to Pu Apple will begin mass production of a 20.3-inch foldable device in 2025 followed by a foldable iPhone that is set to be ready for late 2026. There have long been rumors of Apple working on a foldable device of some sort with a display of around 20 inches, and it would seem that's the device that Pu is talking about here.

Previous claims have come from the well-connected supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo although he had said that the foldable MacBook would be ready for launch in 2027. Display supply chain analyst Ross Young had suggested a 2026 or 2027 launch was possible, but the suggestion that a 2025 launch could be in the cards is the most optimistic report we've seen to date.

Apple again hints at new Apple Pencil launch with revamped May 7 event teaser

Oliver Haslam | May 6, 2024 12:45 PM CDT

Apple has already confirmed that it intends to hold an online event tomorrow, May 7 and while the company hasn't yet confirmed what it will entail, there are strong rumors that it will unveil new iPads and accessories. Now, a new update to the company's website has given us another indication of what we can expect - and it strongly hints that there will be a new Apple Pencil as part of the big event.

Apple again hints at new Apple Pencil launch with revamped May 7 event teaser

Rumors have already suggested that an Apple Pencil 3 is set to be announced, while a more recent report suggests that we can expect that accessory to be called the Apple Pencil Pro. That came after a reference to an Apple Pencil Pro was found in the code of the Japanese Apple website, and now a change to the US website has again hinted at a new Apple Pencil announcement.

The change, reported by 9to5Mac, comes as Apple updated the teaser on its website that cycles between different illustrations of the Apple logo. However, those on an iPhone can use their finger to erase the currently displayed illustration while those on a Mac can use the mouse instead. When the logo has been fully erased a new animation replaces it.

Mystery iPhone 17 Slim again tipped for an all-new 6.55-inch display

Oliver Haslam | May 6, 2024 12:30 PM CDT

While Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models this year, the rumor mill never stops and attention is already starting to turn to the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro. Apple normally sticks to a tried and tested lineup and it was expected that the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max would be replaced by the iPhone 17, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. But recently some things have thrown that into doubt.

Mystery iPhone 17 Slim again tipped for an all-new 6.55-inch display

We recenetly told you about analyst Jeff Pu's belief that Apple will ditch the iPhone 17 Plus in favor of an iPhone 17 Slim, and now that appears to have been given more credence after the well-respectied supply chain analyst Ross Young shared news of an all-new display being in the works.

Pu had suggested that the iPhone 17 Slim would come with a smaller display of around 6.6 inches, and now Ross Young has shared that a mystery 5.55-inch display is in the works for a future iPhone.

Rumored iPhone under-display Face ID tech might miss iPhone 17 launch and debut with iPhone 18

Oliver Haslam | May 6, 2024 12:00 PM CDT

There have been rumors of a big change coming to the iPhone 17 Pro for some time, with display analyst Ross Young believing that the best phones of 2025 would feature an under-display Face ID setup for the first time. The move would mean that there would be no display cutouts for the Face ID technology, reducing the size of the Dynamic Island. However, the analyst says that things might have changed.

Rumored iPhone under-display Face ID tech might miss iPhone 17 launch and debut with iPhone 18

In a post on the X social network, Young noted that the under-display technology may have been delayed until the iPhone 18 Pro. This post came back in March but has only just come to the fore after it was spotted by AppleInsider.

However, more recently analyst Jeff Pu suggested that Apple intends to be able to shrink the Face ID technology for the iPhone 17 Pro Max specifically, suggesting that the iPhone 17 Pro will not have the same technology. Pu appeared to suggest that the smaller components will allow the Dynamic Island to be made smaller, but there was no mention of placing the camera under the display.

Analyst tips iPhone 17 Slim launch for 2025 alongside other big lineup changes

Oliver Haslam | May 6, 2024 11:29 AM CDT

Apple has only been selling the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro lineups for a few months and we're still a long way from the company announcing the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. But that hasn't stopped some people from turning their attention to the next iteration of the wildly popular smartphone and if we're looking into 2025, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro will be the nig news of the year. Now, a new report suggest that Apple intends to make some big changes to that lineup compared to the ones that came before it.

Analyst tips iPhone 17 Slim launch for 2025 alongside other big lineup changes

A Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu research note, reported on by 9to5Mac, suggests that Apple intends to ditch the iPhone 16 Plus in September 2025 and replace it with not another Plus, but a Slim. If the report is accurate, the 2025 lineup will include the iPHone 17, iPhone 17 Slim, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

That change brings with it more tweaks, including display size. Pu believes that the iPhone 17 Slim will have a 6.6-inch display which is smaller than the iPhone 16 Plus' expected 6.7-inch display. It's also thought that it will be thin, hence the name, too.

Apple confirms iOS 17.5 is 'coming soon' and it could be around May 22, here's why

Oliver Haslam | May 6, 2024 11:16 AM CDT

Apple's been working on new software updates for the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and more for a few weeks now and there has been a beta for all of those running as well. The company has never said exactly when those software updates would be released to the public, but we might have just had our best indication yet.

Apple confirms iOS 17.5 is 'coming soon' and it could be around May 22, here's why

Apple today announced its 2024 Pride Collection which includes a new watch band, watch face, and some iPhone and iPad wallpapers. New software updates will bring the watch face and wallpapers to the masses, and Apple says that they'll arrive "soon." However, we think that May 22 seems a likely timeframe.

Apple hasn't confirmed the May 22 date for new software, but it did say that's when the new Apple Watch Pride Edition Braided Solo Loop will go on sale. Priced at $99 it's a stunning band, but it seems most likely that Apple will make the new software available at the same time to allow buyers to use the new watch face with it. We can also expect that the new iPhone and iPad software will debut at the same time.

Mystery Apple Pencil Pro appears in Japanese website code as May 7 iPad event nears

Oliver Haslam | May 6, 2024 11:00 AM CDT

With Apple set to hold what many assume to be an iPad event on May 7, the company is also tipped to launch new accessories as well. A revamped, more sturdy Apple Magic Keyboard is thought to be likely to join the new iPads, as is what we've been told to expect will be the Apple Pencil 3. However, a new report suggests that it might not have that name after all.

Mystery Apple Pencil Pro appears in Japanese website code as May 7 iPad event nears

If the report is accurate Apple is about to announce its first Apple Pencil Pro. That's according to code found on the Japanese Apple website, at least. The Homepage banner on that website describes its header image as a creator holding an Apple Pencil Pro, a product that does not yet exist.

Apple currently sells the Apple Pencil (1st-generation), Apple Pencil (2nd-generation), and Apple Pencil (USB-C) and it was expected that any new model would simply increment the generation number. But now it seems likely that Apple is going to go a step beyond, adding an Apple Pencil Pro to the lineup for the first time.

Oliver Haslam | May 6, 2024 10:47 AM CDT

Apple has confirmed that it intends to hold an online event on May 7 and while it hasn't said what it intends to show off, we're relatively sure that there will be new iPads and accessories. The event, carrying the tagline "Let Loose," is going to offer the first new iPads in more than a year and expectations are high. And you can watch along a home for free.

Apple will hold the "Let Loose" event on Tuesday, May 7 at 7:00 a.m. Pacific Time or 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time. That means that there will be an early start for some, but the odd timing would suggest that there is a global aspect to things - Apple is expected to announce a global launch of the Apple Vision Pro during the event.

Apple's entry-level iPad could get a new, cheaper refresh in 2024

Oliver Haslam | May 4, 2024 5:30 AM CDT

With Apple set to hold a new iPad event on May 7 the expectation is that a refreshed iPad Pro will be joined by a revamped iPad Air lineup, but those hoping for the entry-level iPad to get some love will be disappointed. They won't be that way for long though, and Apple is expected to update that model later this year as well. And it might even get cheaper, too.

Apple's entry-level iPad could get a new, cheaper refresh in 2024

The current 10th-gen iPad is the best ever, and it ditched the Home button to make it appear more modern and match the other iPads in the lineup. But that meant an increase in price from the previous $329 to the $449 price that Apple asks for today. However, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman now believes that Apple is not only going to update the iPad but also potentially seek to reduce its price, too.

Writing in a larger explainer about the upcoming May 7 event, Gurman said that Apple is working on a cost-reduced version of its 10th-gen iPad. If this does happen Apple will phase the older 9th-gen model out but no firm details have yet been shared.

Apple's May 7 iPad event - here's what we expect to be announced

Oliver Haslam | May 4, 2024 5:15 AM CDT

Apple is set to hold an event on May 7, and while it will be streamed rather than an in-person event like the pre-COVID days, don't let that make you think that there won't be any big announcements. Apple is yet to confirm what those announcements will be, but the rumor mill has been in overdrive for weeks now and we have a pretty solid idea of what we can expect CEO Tim Cook and his band of merry executives to announce in its streamed video.

Apple's May 7 iPad event - here's what we expect to be announced

There have been rumors of new iPad announcements for months now, and with Apple having skipped the entire 2023 year in terms of refreshing its tablets, 2024 is set to bring plenty of updated models. The iPad Pro and iPad Air will be the star of the show come Tuesday's event, and there's plenty to get excited about.

If everything goes as expected, Apple will announce an update to its high-powered iPad Pro lineup. Both the 11- and 12.9-inch tablets are expected to be updated including new OLED displays for the first time. The same 120Hz ProMotion variable refresh rate is expected, but improved contrast and colors, not to mention a higher brightness ceiling, should make this the best iPad display ever.
