Apple sets new launch weekend record with 3M iPad sales

Daniel Perez | Mobile Devices, Tablets & Phones | Nov 5, 2012 10:08 AM CST

Regardless if the majority of people were less than impressed with the new iPad mini and 4th generation iPad, the rule of thumb has always been if there's an Apple logo on it, it'll sell millions. That's exactly what happened this weekend as Apple has announced it has sold 3 million iPads this past weekend.

Friday was the official release date of both the iPad mini and 4th generation iPad around the world and marks the first time Apple has launched two new products on the same day, not counting new releases made available through the Apple Store.

As of now, Apple has yet to release sales data for individual sales of the iPad mini and 4th Generation iPad which we're sure to hear about in an upcoming Apple Event with nothing but praise coming from the company.

Skyrim DLC 'Dragonborn' includes rideable dragons, original Dragonborn for 1600 MS Points on Dec. 4th

Daniel Perez | Gaming | Nov 5, 2012 9:27 AM CST

The next piece of DLC for Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been announced today by way of the unveiling of its official trailer. Are you ready to meet the first ever Dragonborn?

"Dragonborn" will tell the tale of the first Dragonborn ever to make his way through the Elder Scrolls world who is only known now as the Dragon Priest. The Dragon Priest will be attempting to come back and rule over the land as he did in the past, and we're assuming it'll be your job as the current Dragonborn to snuff him out.

Judging by the debut trailer released today, it looks as though new weapons, armor and enemies will be made available in the Dragonborn DLC, as well as a feature many Skyrim fans have been begging for even before the game was released: rideable dragons.

Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 leaked onto torrent websites

Daniel Perez | Gaming | Nov 5, 2012 8:51 AM CST

One of 2012's most highly anticipated first-person shooters that isn't Halo 4 will soon be released next Tuesday, but seeing as gamers absolutely cannot wait for actual release dates, a pirated version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has been leaked through various torrent websites.

According to a number of reports, user "BAD 2 THE B0N3" published the leaked version of Black Ops 2 for Xbox 360 onto 360iso. BAD 2 THE B0N3 was also responsible for last month's Halo 4 leak.

A flood of gameplay footage has already started making their way through YouTube that cover much of the game including the game's campaign, multiplayer and zombies mode. If you're the type of person who would prefer not to run into spoilers of a game before its release, it's HIGHLY recommended you don't go looking through YouTube for the next week as Black Ops 2 can easily be ruined thanks to these videos.

Sony has been approved to launch the PlayStation 3 in China, finally

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Nov 4, 2012 11:32 PM CST

In China, game consoles are technically illegal, which has stopped Sony's PlayStation 3 from launching in the country, until now. The company have been approved to launch their now ageing console in China.

Authorities granted the PlayStation 3 a "China Compulsory Certificate" in July, but the PS3 has yet to have launched yet. Considering the PS3 launched in Japan close to six years ago, it is definitely behind the times in China. China pushed in a console ban in 2000 to protect the nation's youth, in turn, creating a booming grey-market for game consoles, and games themselves, pushing piracy numbers up considerably.

Consoles can be sold if they're labelled as home entertainment consoles, and thanks to Sony baking in a Blu-ray player into the console along with its many online capabilities, the PS3 is considered a home entertainment system anyway. Microsoft never released the Xbox 360 in China, and Nintendo didn't bother with the Wii, either.

More than 10% of all web browsing comes from smartphones, tablets

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Nov 4, 2012 10:41 PM CST

We all know smartphones and tablets rule our lives now, but just how much do we use them to surf the Internet? Well, according to the latest data from NetMarketShare, it looks like it's a lot.

Their data points out that smartphones and tablets accounted for 10.3% of all web browsing in October, which is the first time it has broken through the 10% barrier.

More interesting is that mobile browsing was at just 7.2% of all browsing in March, meaning that we're seen an explosion of web browsing on mobile phones in the last few months alone. iOS-based smartphones and tablets like the iPhone and iPad account for around 60% of all web browsing in october 2012. Android devices scooped up a little over 27% of mobile web browsing.

RumorTT: Google working on new entry-level Nexus tablet

We already have a super cheap $199 slate from Google, the amazing Nexus 7 tablet, but it looks like they're about to set that price bar a fair bit lower, again.

DigiTimes is reporting that the Mountain View-based company is working on an "entry-level Nexus tablet that has not yet been announced". Nothing more from this is known, but that is quite the tease.

What could we see? A $99 tablet? $149 maybe? What could Google do to reduce the pricing? We're already getting a quad-core tablet with a 7-inch 1280x800-pixel display running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for just $199. They could knock it down to 5-inch, a dual-core processor and keep Jelly Bean, while knocking $50-$100 off the price. That would surely shake the market up, a lot.

Ace of Spades, an 8-bit, Minecraft-like team-based FPS

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Nov 4, 2012 2:27 AM CST

There's a new team-based first-person shooter on the block called Ace of Spades, and most of you (including myself) have probably not even heard of it.

Well, the game is being made specifically with the gameplay found in Team Fortress in mind, wrapped in the 8-bit blocky Minecraft-like look, which also gives players in the game the freedom to build themselves a custom battlefield, on-the-go. Yes, while you're defending, shooting, and running away from bullets, you'll be making your own battlefield.

Ace of Spades supports up to 32 simultaneous players in a world that is completely destructible, and just like Minecraft, players are only limited by their own creativity in building their surroundings. Ace of Spades is a PC-exclusive (yay!) and has been in development since April 2011, with the beta sporting around 2.5 million players.

32GB Nexus 7 teased 'with Android 4.2' in the UK

Android 4.2 has, until now, only been talked about for the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 devices that were announced last week - but in the UK, it seems that the 32GB Nexus 7 variant will come "with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean".

UK retailer HMV, has been advertising in newspaper ads of the tablet sporting the latest Android OS, but with Android 4.2 not yet finalized or open-sourced, it shouldn't be baked into any tablets sitting on store shelves just yet.

With the Nexus 7 being a Nexus device, Google should get Android 4.2 out to it as quick as possible, but I'm guessing we'll see the release of the latest iteration of Android closer to the release of the new Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 tablets next week on November 13.

Microsoft working on new smartphone, comes as a surprise to no one

Trace Hagan | Mobile Devices, Tablets & Phones | Nov 2, 2012 6:32 PM CDT

Word on the street is that Microsoft is working with component suppliers in Asia to test their very own smartphone design, at least if the Wall Street Journal's sources are to be believed. There has been a rumor circulating that this was the case ever since Microsoft unveiled their new Surface tablets.

Of course, Microsoft has refused to comment on the rumor, neither confirming nor denying the smartphone's existence. Microsoft's parts suppliers say that there is a current device being tested, though its not clear that the device will go into mass production or not. The screen is reportedly between 4 and 5 inches, slotting in between the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S III.

"We're quite happy this holiday [season] going to market hard with Nokia, Samsung and HTC," said Mr. Ballmer. "Whether we had a plan to do something different or we didn't have a plan I wouldn't comment in any dimension."

Facebook looking to offer free Wi-Fi to users who check-in at businesses

Trace Hagan | Internet & Websites | Nov 2, 2012 5:29 PM CDT

You read the title right, Facebook would like to offer users free internet access at some public places, but you'll have to check-in at the business in order to get access. Facebook has given some special routers to a few businesses that will provide internet once a user checks in to that location. The user is then forwarded to the business's Facebook page.

"When you access Facebook Wi-Fi by checking in, you are directed to your local business's Facebook Page. Some stores may also offer deals or specials when you check in," a Facebook spokesperson said.

Of course, not all users, including myself, will want to do this. Some like their privacy and some just avoid checking-in like the plague. Facebook has offered an alternative, if this is the case for you. Users can ask the business for a password, which will then allow them access to the internet.
