Google plans to make search even more AI-driven in 2025

Ille Smolanko | Artificial Intelligence | Feb 10, 2025 3:19 AM CST

In a recent earnings call, Google CEO Sundar Pichai expressed the company's plans to incorporate AI more deeply into its online search functionality.

Google plans to make search even more AI-driven in 2025

Since the release of ChatGPT, Google has gradually shifted towards a more AI-driven search model, first introducing 'AI overviews' in May of 2024. The feature was released to mixed reception, with many users reporting inaccurate information and strange hallucinations. Such as recommending to add glue to pizza, or to stare at the sun for 'health benefits'. There are also concerns regarding how Google's AI overviews affect brand visibility, with many businesses reliant on search results to drive customer acquisition.

NASA captures a 'boom' in space from 600 million light years away

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Feb 10, 2025 2:32 AM CST

NASA has shared an image of a celestial "boom" that was captured by the iconic Hubble Space Telescope, which peered at the event from 600 million light years away.

NASA captures a 'boom' in space from 600 million light years away

Located in the constellation Gemini, Hubble captured the above image, showcasing a supernova taking place. The "boom" or supernova is the blue dot at the center of the image, and according to NASA's recent statement, the supernova is called SN 2022aajn and has never been the subject of published research. However, SN 2022aajn is classified as a Type Ia supernova, which results from the explosion of the core of a dead star.

These types of supernovae assist astronomers in determining the distance between Earth and distant galaxies, as these types of supernovae have the same "intrinsic luminosity - no matter how bright they seem from Earth." Astronomers can then compare the observed brightness to the known intrinsic brightness, enabling a calculation to be done on the distance to the supernova and to it's host galaxy. There is one small problem that throws a wrench into this method of calculating distance. Cosmic dust.

NASA footage shows enchanting dance of auroras over a country from space

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Feb 10, 2025 1:31 AM CST

The International Space Station (ISS) provides an incredible vantage point to capture some of Earth's most magical phenomena, such as auroras.

NASA footage shows enchanting dance of auroras over a country from space

NASA has taken to the official International Space Station X account to share some footage captured on January 4. The post states the ISS soared into an aurora "dancing" over Canada, with the video showcasing city lights in the landscape below. Following the footage, the floating laboratory orbited into a sunrise 259 miles above the Atlantic Ocean.

For those that don't know, an aurora is caused by the interaction between solar wind and Earth's magnetic field. Here's how it works. The solar wind contains a stream of charged particles ejected from the Sun, and when these charged particles collide with Earth's magnetic field, they are directed toward our planet's poles. The charged particles collide with the gasses in Earth's upper atmosphere, such as oxygen and nitrogen, resulting in the gases becoming excited and releasing energy in the form of light.

Top 5 best indie games showcased and played at SAGE 2025

Jak Connor | Gaming | Feb 10, 2025 12:30 AM CST

Independent video game developers gathered at the South Australian Game Exhibition over the weekend to showcase a collection of games currently in development, and these were the best games I saw at the show.

Top 5 best indie games showcased and played at SAGE 2025

In a world where there are so many games and not enough time to enjoy them, it's sometimes worth seeing where they come from, meeting the people behind the titles, and giving those people feedback on your experience with the game. The South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) recently held a showcase of South Australia's video game development sector, which featured a bunch of independent developers displaying the games they have been hard at work.

In an effort to shine a light on South Australian game development and indie game development as a whole, I have selected my personal favorite titles from the showcase and linked to each of their Steam listing. Sometimes us gamers forget that great games can be made by just a small team of passionate gamers.

ZOTAC is selling GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs direct to its Discord community

Kosta Andreadis | Graphics Cards | Feb 9, 2025 7:57 PM CST

The recent launch of the GeForce RTX 5080 and GeForce RTX 5090 has been heavily criticized by the PC gaming community. Most complaints stem from there being very little stock available on day one, with scalpers and bots snapping up most GPUs. For many trying to secure a GeForce RTX 5090 on day one, it felt so futile that the consensus quickly transitioned from excitement to NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 50 Series arrival being more of a "paper launch" than a proper release.

ZOTAC is selling GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs direct to its Discord community

And with scalpers charging exorbitant prices and even retailers and partners raising prices by up to 70% over the MSRP, there's a sense that it has all gone a little out of hand. NVIDIA did note that there would be stock run-outs ahead of the launch, but it has yet to provide a statement on launch numbers or when GeForce RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 GPUs will be readily available for purchase.

It's bleak stuff, but there is good news if you're a part of NVIDIA partner ZOTAC GAMING's Discord community. The company engages with its fans and members on the platform to offer eligible users the chance to purchase a GeForce RTX 5090 or GeForce RTX 5080 at a fair price - the now mythical MSRP of $1999 and $999.

AMD launches new RDNA 3 GPU in China, the Radeon RX 7650 GRE

Kosta Andreadis | Graphics Cards | Feb 9, 2025 7:26 PM CST

AMD's first official brand-new Radeon GPU launch for 2025 isn't the long-awaited arrival of RDNA and the new Radeon RX 9070 XT - but a new RDNA 3 card for China. The Radeon RX 7650 GRE or Golden Rabbit Edition is a new mainstream option with 8GB of VRAM that sits between the Radeon RX 7600 8GB and the Radeon RX 7600 XT 16GB.

AMD launches new RDNA 3 GPU in China, the Radeon RX 7650 GRE

However, not all that much is surprising or exciting about the Radeon RX 7650 GRE. Spec-wise, it's a Radeon RX 7600 with a slight overclock and power rating increase. As the full Navi 33 GPU or chip can be found in all Radeon RX 7600 models (the non-Xt, the XT, and the new GRE), you're looking at the same 32 Compute Units (CUs) and 2048 Stream Processors.

The new Radeon RX 7650 GRE features a boost clock speed of up to 2695 MHz (or 2755 MHz in OC models), compared to the Radeon RX 7600's boost clock speed of 2655 MHz. This sees its power rating increase from 165W to 170W. With the same 8GB of GDDR6 memory on a 128-bit interface, performance for the new GRE variant should be on par with the Radeon RX 7600.

Sony offers PlayStation gamers compensation for 24-hour PSN outage

Kosta Andreadis | Gaming | Feb 9, 2025 6:58 PM CST

Sony's PlayStation Network went offline for a considerable period this past weekend, with players unable to access their games and other online services for almost 24 hours. It's the second-longest PSN outage to date, falling behind the monumental 2011 outage that lasted weeks - sparking many to wonder if it was due to a breach or attack.

With Sony's PlayStation Network and PSN services restored, the company announced on social media that it had "fully recovered from an operational issue." This vague explanation has done little to satisfy fans wanting a detailed explanation or reasoning for the outage, which occurred right as the weekend began. On the plus side, Sony is compensating players with a free reward.

Sony's social media post reads, "We apologize for the inconvenience and thank the community for their patience. All PlayStation Plus members will automatically receive an additional 5 days of service."

In his new PowerOn newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman explains that Apple is still hard at work on a new pair of AR glasses, with Apple's Vision Products Group boss, John Ternus, not wanting another (expensive) flop on his hands in a post-Vision Pro world.

Gurman explained: "As I reported last month, Apple recently scrapped plans for augmented reality glasses that would tether to a Mac. This device wasn't the dream AR glasses that everyone is waiting for, but it might have served as a nice stopgap product".

NVIDIA officially responds to RTX 50-series black screen and crashing reports

There is a growing number of reports from RTX 50-series owners and some RTX 40-series owners of black screens presenting themselves along with crashes.

NVIDIA officially responds to RTX 50-series black screen and crashing reports

At the moment, this issue is still very new and developing, but given the increasing frequency of reports from users, particularly RTX 50-series owners, it appears there are significant problems that need to be addressed. It's always hard at the beginning of a new hardware launch to determine if there's a real problem or if these "reports" are simply anecdotal, falsified to generate clicks, or a genuine issue that needs to be addressed by the hardware manufacturer. As for the RTX 50-series launch, it appears the latter is the case, as numerous reports of black screens and crashing have now resulted in NVIDIA stepping in with a statement to PCGamer.

NVIDIA was asked about the crashing and black screen reports from RTX 50-series owners and some RTX 40-series owners, and according to the publication, NVIDIA is aware of the problems and is currently "investigating the reported issues with the RTX 50-series." Users experiencing these problems are reporting their occurrence in a variety of different scenarios, such as changing the resolution/refresh rate of a display, alt-tabbing a full-screen application, using multi-monitor setups, or even just when the system is under a heavy load.

Scientists prove how to cook eggs perfectly every time

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Feb 8, 2025 6:02 AM CST

Many chefs consider the cooking of an egg art as it can be pretty tricky to cook eggs consistently in their various end forms, especially when considering how to obtain their most nutritional value. But what if you had science to help?

Scientists prove how to cook eggs perfectly every time

Researchers have looked at the science of cooking an egg and penned a new study now published in the journal Communications Engineering that combines both perfect cooking time and nutritional value. The study looked at the different temperatures of cooked eggs and compared their nutritional value. Firstly, the yolk of an egg begins to harden at 149 degrees Fahrenheit (65 C), while the white of the egg starts hardening at 185 degrees Fahrenheit (85 C).

Researchers explain that cooking an egg in 212F (100C) water for 12 minutes will result in both the yolk and the egg white being hard. Cooking egg sous vide, or the process of sealing food in a bag and cooking it in a water bath at a precise temperature, which is typically between 60 and 70C (140F and 158F) when it comes to eggs, the egg yolk is at a temperature of approximately 65C (149F). While the yolk temperature is ideal in this method the researchers found this temperature is still too low for the proteins within the egg white to fully develop, meaning it's not as nutritionally dense.
