Lexar unveils 128GB and 64GB SDXC cards

Shane McGlaun | Storage | Jan 3, 2011 12:06 PM CST

Lexar has been making storage cards for cameras and other devices for a long time now. The company has announced a new storage card for SDXC compatible cameras and camcorders that has the highest amount of storage in the industry. The new card is the industry's first 128GB offering. The card also comes in a 64GB SDXC version as well.

Both the 128GB and the 64GB versions of the memory card are speed Class 10 offerings with 133x performance. That means that the cards offer a minimum of 20MB/s data speed. That should make them fast enough for HD video recording and for fast burst shooting. The pro-level cards are aimed at the professional photographer.

As you can imagine, cards with this capacity are far from cheap. When these cards land in Q1 2011 they will be priced at nearly $700 for the 128GB unit and nearly $400 for the 64GB offering. Both will come with software to help you recover deleted images.

ICY Dock MB973SP-B slips into your gaming case for more storage

Shane McGlaun | Storage | Jan 3, 2011 11:02 AM CST

CES 2011, Las Vegas - Each time I build myself a new computer I end up with one 5.25-inch drive in the thing for my software discs and having to lay some of my HDDs around inside the case when I run out of 3.5-incn bays. I don't use all of those drives all the time, but I like to have them in case I need any of my old data. If you have a bunch of 5.25-inch bays vacant and you want more storage space the new Icy Dock MB973SP-B may be just what you need.

The device is a three bay dock that uses any 3.5-inch SATA HDDs and allows you to slip them in and out to use all those extra drives. The dock has a power switch of its own so you can power it down when not needed to save power for your machine. The HDDs just slide into the enclosure and need no trays. The device keeps the drives cool with an 80mm fan that uses smart cooling tech.

The enclosure has a fan controller to sense the temp of the drives and turn the fan on when needed. Other features include an eSATA port and USB 2.0 port on the front. The device can be connected to your mainboard RAID controller for RAID 5 and will support RAID 1 for two drives and a third drive for other needs.

AMD to have fisticuffs with Intel, bringing sexy back in the form of AMD FX!

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Dec 31, 2010 9:04 PM CST

It seems like so long ago that AMD had the popular high end FX range. But, it was put to the side with the Phenom and Phenom II series processors as it just couldn't compete in higher end market segments, also because AMD did not want to dilute the FX identifier.

Enter "Black Edition" which was the model with the unlocked BClk multipliers. But now AMD are bringing FX back with the new Bulldozer architecture, which gives the processor a much higher degree of inter-core integration, sharing of common components, higher instructions per clock-cycle and Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX).

AMD's Bulldozer "Zambezi" desktop chips are supposedly going to come in form of two ultra high-end SKUs: the 8-core AMD Vision Black FX and performance segment AMD Vision Ultimate FX.

Grace Digital Audio internet radios with color screens to debut at CES

Shane McGlaun | Audio | Dec 31, 2010 2:02 PM CST

I don't listen to the radio much in my home because there aren't that many stations in my area and the ones we have tend to play music I don't like. In the car, I listen to CDs and digital tracks mostly. If you have the same issue and you don't want to move your CDs in and out of the car one of the internet radio devices from Grace Digital Audio would be perfect. The company will be unveiling three new devices at CES next week that all have color screens.

One of the devices is the Solo Touch that is a compact tuner with a big 4.3-inch touchscreen color display. The device also ships with a remote control and has an Ethernet connection in addition to the WiFi connectivity built-in. It also has headphone port and RCA outputs with a MSRP of $249.99. The Bravado X is a WiFi enabled tablet top radio with a 2.7-inch color screen.

It packs stereo speakers, RCA inputs and outputs, USB port, and a headphone port. It will sell for $179.99. The final new device is called the Mondo with a 3.5-inch screen and full alarm clock functionality. The device has snooze and a remote control. It sports WiFi, Ethernet port, RCA outputs, and a USB connection. The MSRP is $169.99. Exactly when the three new products will be available to purchase is unknown.

Barnes & Noble says Nook line are its best selling items ever

Shane McGlaun | Mobile Devices | Dec 31, 2010 1:04 PM CST

eReaders have been around for a long time now, but they really only caught the attention of a lot of people after the Amazon Kindle debuted a few years ago. The Kindle went on to great success and is the best selling item ever for Amazon, which is saying a lot. Barnes & Noble was one of the booksellers that decided to follow Amazon into the eReader market with its line of Nook readers.

Barnes & Nobel has now announced that the Nook line of eReaders are the best selling items it has ever had in its store or online. That best selling title spans the entire 40-year history of the company. Barnes & Noble offers up no specifics on just how many Nooks have sold overall. However, it did note that on Christmas Day alone almost a million NookBooks sold.

"NOOKcolor became the gift of choice over the holidays for people who love to read everything - books, magazines, newspapers, children's books and more - in rich, beautiful color," said William Lynch, CEO of Barnes & Noble. "The success of NOOKcolor, along with our unique ability to market NOOK devices to readers in our stores and through our strong channel partnerships with Best Buy, Walmart and Books-a-Million, resulted in the continued explosive growth of our Digital Content business and our NOOK line, our most successful products ever. We have a large online book business at BN.com, that's been recently growing. And the fact that eBook unit sales now exceed physical book sales through BN.com, illustrates how quickly we've grown this exciting new business at Barnes & Noble."

Clear discontinues iSpot 4G device

Shane McGlaun | Mobile Devices | Dec 31, 2010 11:00 AM CST

If you are an early adopter of the iPad, you have a device that came with no 3G service and many of these folks are looking for devices that will get them online using a mobile network. If you are a user that happens to be in one of the 4G service areas that Clear operates that fast WiMax network might have looked really good combined with the company's iPhone/iPad/touch specific iSpot hotspot device.

A few weeks back you could get the thing for only $20 as a holiday special. That special apparently helped Clear to clear out their stock of the iSpot devices. A Clear rep on the official Clear forums has told users that the device has been discontinued. Apparently, you can still find the iSpot in some retail stores, but after that stock is gone, there will be no more offered.

Clear has apparently held some of them back to serve as warranty replacement in the event a user has issues with one under warranty. The iSpot would only work with iOS devices and some users had issues getting it to work period. This may be one of the big reason the item is no more. If you already own an iSpot device, the Clear rep said the service would continue to be supported.

Samsung NX11 interchangeable lens digital camera debuts

Shane McGlaun | Cameras, Printers & Scanners | Dec 30, 2010 12:06 PM CST

I have been shooting photos for years now using a DSLR camera. I bought the DSLR just for the faster shutter speeds so I could catch my kids actually in the frame instead of just an elbow or ear. I found out after using the thing for a while that the manual modes a DSLR offers and the ability to change a lens to your needs and situation makes for much better photos. The big downsides to a DSLR camera is that the things are big and bulky, plus they cost a lot.

Over the last year or so there have been a growing number of smaller digital cameras coming to the market that lack the mirror box of a DSLR making them smaller and keep the image quality and interchangeable lenses. They aren't any cheaper than a DSLR typically, but they are easier for some to take with them. The latest of these interchangeable lens cameras to land is the Samsung NX11. This is not a micro four-thirds camera; it has a larger APS-C sensor than the micro four-thirds offerings have.

The camera works with the Samsung i-Function lenses that allow all settings to be adjusted from the lens. The rear LCD is a 3-inch AMOLED unit and the camera can record HD resolution video as well. It will be offered with a 20-50mm zoom lens and other lenses will be optional. The sensor in the camera is a 14.6MP unit and the video recording resolution is 720p. Samsung will ship the camera in February for $649.

Shane McGlaun | Cameras, Printers & Scanners | Dec 30, 2010 11:00 AM CST

Samsung has been making all sorts of electronic products for a very long time and is one of the largest electronics makers in the world. The company has a wide range of products with computers, TV, audio gear, and digital cameras. The latest new product to surface from the company is a new digital camera called the WB700 that promises some really impressive zoom levels in a slim device.

The camera has a total of 24x zoom. That includes the 18x optical zoom and the 1.3x smart zoom, which is a digital zoom function. The camera uses a 16MP CCD sensor and it has full manual controls to give the user all the control over their photos they desire. The camera can also record video in 720p resolution. The camera has dual optical image stabilization and digital image stabilization, which is important at these zoom levels.

The camera also has a movie recording button, supports RAW format images, and has a HDMI output for watching those videos on your TV. It comes with all the automatic functions and features you expect to find on a higher end digital camera. Samsung will ship the camera in April for $299.99 and it will be shown off at CES next month.

Hex watch band turns your iPod nano into a wristwatch

Shane McGlaun | Mobile Devices | Dec 29, 2010 2:00 PM CST

If you are the owner of a new sixth gen iPod nano, you have undoubtedly seen all of those watch bands that have been making their rounds to turn the iPod into a wrist watch of geeky greatness. If you have been holding out until a watchband that looked really cool was available that would also protect your device the Hex Watch Band may be exactly what you have been waiting for. The band is made totally of soft silicone material that will help prevent damage and won't scratch the nano.

The Hex comes in nine different colors and the nano is easy to get in and out of the band with a design that is dubbed "Pop-in, Pop-out" that lets you get the iPod in and out quickly with no tools. The watch band also holds the nano in a good position to run headphone cords up the arm or sleeve of a jacket for listening on the go.

The band can be ordered right now for a bit under $30. I like the hex design on the strap; it gives the band a nice finish that looks better than plain smooth silicone would. You can see a video of the watch band below.

Moshi Reflection Clock is a Brookstone exclusive

Shane McGlaun | Peripherals | Dec 29, 2010 11:10 AM CST

I really hate having to set my alarm clock. The thing is a huge pain to set with tiny buttons that are hard to see and push. I hate it even more if I look away for a second and pass the hour I need and have to go all the way back around to set the thing. Changing for DST really sucks too. If you have the same hatred for programming normal alarm clocks, you might like the latest offering from Moshi.

Moshi has tech inside its cool alarm clocks that is perfect for those that can't see that well and for those that just hate programming their normal clock. The tech allows you to press one button and then tell the Moshi clock what time it is to set it. You can program alarms and just about all of the other features of the clock using your voice. You can even set snooze with your voice.

The latest clock is the Reflection and it is a Brookstone exclusive item selling for about $56. It offers dual alarms, indoor and outdoor temperatures, and a six-color night light. The sensor for outside temperature is wireless and included in the price. Power comes from three AA batteries. You can buy the clock right now.

Colorful unveils cool limited edition iGame460 video card

Shane McGlaun | Graphics Cards | Dec 29, 2010 10:14 AM CST

I think that all gamers and computer enthusiasts can agree that for the most part the only difference between video cards from different vendors is the name on the sticker and the bundle that comes with the card. One stock clocked GTX460 is the same as another when you get down to it. If you are in the market for a new video card, a company called Colorful has a new offering that has a really cool bundle and is very limited edition.

The card is called the iGame460 Commemorative Edition and only 50 of them will be offered in the entire world. That exclusivity gets you an NVIDIA GTX 460 video card with a really cool heat sink and fan. The card has dual fans and the shroud over the fans has lots of angles for good looks. It has an interesting customizable cooling solution. That spike and heat sink you see on the bottom of the picture above is actually a heat pipe that you can add onto the card if you want to.

The card and its accessories come packaged in a metal look suitcase with foam cutouts on the inside. The customizable heat sink is known as the Air-Kit aero. The card also includes something called a network snake power cord. I have no idea exactly what that is. Pricing and availability are unknown. The card has 2GB of RAM and the clock speeds are 890MHz on the core and 4000MHz on the RAM.

MSI teases the GPU world with R6970 and N580GTX Lightning graphics cards!

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Dec 28, 2010 11:54 PM CST

MSI did not only work up the netbook market with their U270 announcement, but they're planning to punch GPU makers in the face with their new HD6970 and GTX580 Lightning based cards.

Both cards feature the new cooling solution called Twin Frozr III. We can't see if there's any changes on the GPU itself, but we can see that the cooler looks boss - the N580GTX Lightning is powered by dual 8-pin PCI-e connectors which should give users some serious overclocking potential and world records will most likely be smashed with some of these puppies.

The R6970 includes dual DVI-I, HDMI and two mini DisplayPort connectors. Interestingly, the N580GTX also includes more outputs for video - now including a pair of DVI-I connectors, HDMI and (drum roll...) DisplayPort! Although, you're still limited to just two outputs at the same time, but it does increase it's use and upgrade ability with screens in the future.

Amazon says latest Kindle is its best selling product ever

Shane McGlaun | Mobile Devices | Dec 28, 2010 12:06 PM CST

We can credit Amazon with helping to revive the eReader market with its Kindle. Readers had been around for a long time before Amazon entered the market, but the Kindle and its feature set really got users to pay attention and kicked the market off in earnest. Today the Kindle is still one of the most popular devices on the market.

Amazon has announced that its latest Kindle is now the best selling device in the history of the company. The previous best selling product was the book "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." Amazon didn't get specific on the number of Kindles it sold in all. However, it did state that on its busiest day, November 29, customers ordered over 13.7 million items globally amounting to 158 items ordered per second. Amazon also noted that more Kindles were turned on for the first time on Christmas day than any other day in history.

The best selling products on Amazon this holiday season were the WiFi Kindle and the Kindle 3G. The most purchased Kindle book was "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and that book was also the most gifted book in the store. I would like to know specifically how many Kindles were sold.

Trojan Condoms to show off adult tech at CES 2011

Shane McGlaun | Trade Shows | Dec 28, 2010 11:04 AM CST

I would bet that most of you out there are familiar with the Trojan Condoms brand. It's hard to get away from the commercials on the radio and TV on shows where they think adults might be watching or listening. The company has announced that it will be at CES 2011 marking its first time to be at the show.

Why would a condom maker be at a tech convention? Apparently, Trojan is unveiling a new ultra thin condom at the show along with some "adult" electronic devices like the Trojan Vibrations. My favorite part of the Trojan press release is where the chief scientist and condom developer likens Trojan products to SSDs (not to be confused with STDs) and other tech.

Dr. Michael Harrison said, "Innovation in this category is critical. At the show, you'll see ultra thin TV's, tiny solid state hard drives and thousands of other innovations designed to improve the consumer experience. It's a show dedicated to inventiveness, and that's exactly why we're here. We'll be announcing a collection of new products in early January that we believe are every bit as innovative as some of the bigger consumer electronics announcements, and certainly as important."

Google's next-gen Android Music app leaks out - hints at the 3.0 UI

Anthony Garreffa | Software & Apps | Dec 27, 2010 8:30 PM CST

Want a sneak peak at the new Android Music app from the upcoming 3.0 update? Take a peek below for a nice little video showing off the various features of the player.

Google boasted at Google I/O that their plans for the next-gen Music app is for it to be able to push your web-purchased songs to the device, and allows a user to browse their PC's music library directly from the phone - as if the songs were on the Android device itself. Nifty, eh?

What this video shows is the difference in aesthetics - blurred backrounds and nice frosty glass widgets. There's a menu button on the app (in the top right). Could this mean Google is getting rid of their hardware buttons eventually? We don't know yet - let's hope not!

Geek builds camera rig to see himself in third person

Shane McGlaun | Cameras, Printers & Scanners | Dec 27, 2010 1:00 PM CST

This is a really kooky project that a guy has cobbled together DIY style. I am not sure why you would want to be able to see yourself in third person other than because it would allow you to see if your butt looks fat in your favorite jeans. I am not a third person fan in shooters; much less in real life but this strange project is sort of cool.

A guy gong by BigRedRocket on Instructables has used a backpack, a cheap digital camera, video goggles of some sort, and some PVC pipe to build a wearable camera that shows the user and what the user sees for above and a bit behind them as they move. The builder says that you can use any digital camera that will send live video out including some camcorders.

The finished product looks really weird and I think that some folks might thing you are up to no good if you build one and then try it out. It looks like something a mad bomber would use in a movie to torment a victim. I think I would just go with one of the action cameras on the market made for filming people on hikes or biking rather than wearing this. Check out the video of the system in use below.

Nikon Patent app details lens with both manual and automatic zoom

Shane McGlaun | Software & Apps | Dec 27, 2010 12:04 PM CST

Over the last few years, the ability to record HD video on a DSLR has gone from non-existent to a very common feature. The video quality DSLR cameras are capable of mean that a lot of video pros are using the cameras to record video. Many of those people are finding that it's hard to make smooth zoom transitions using the manual zoom lenses on most DSLR cameras.

Nikon filed a patent applicant back on June 3 2009 that surfaced last week that outlines a cool new lens that videographers and still shooters will really like for their DSLR cameras. The lens has a method to allow for manual focus and to allow for automatic focus on one lens. The automatic zoom would be used for smoothly zooming in on the subject when making video.

The manual focus option could be used when taking still photos where speed is more important than zooming smoothly. The lens would be controlled manually by twisting the lens like any DSLR user is familiar with and by hitting a button on the back of the camera body for automatic zoom. At this time, there is no word on when the lens will surface for people to purchase.

LG set to launch 72-inch full LED backlit 3D TV at CES

Shane McGlaun | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Dec 27, 2010 11:06 AM CST

Next week marks the start of that wondrous time of year known as CES where all things geeky and electronic take the forefront online. The number of new gadgets and offerings that will be unveiled at the show is overwhelming and we are only days from the start so some of the gear is already being talked about by the manufacturers. One of the products that LG will be showing off at CES is a new 3D TV.

This is no normal 3D TV though, LG claims that the set is the world's largest full LED backlit 3D TV. The screen is a whopping 72-inches and it supports 3D content and HD resolutions as well as 2D TV. The set is called the LZ9700 and LG hasn't offer up all the specs at this time. What we do know is that the TV has a 400Hz TruMotion panel for smooth images.

It also has Smart TV functionality with support for TV apps and streaming of content from online providers. The TV also ships with the LG Magic Motion Remote control. The full details of the set should be made official at CES next week. LG offers no pricing information and no indication of whether the set uses passive or active 3D glasses.

BenQ R100 tablet PC to launch in early 2011

Shane McGlaun | Laptops | Dec 24, 2010 1:02 PM CST

I don't think of computers at all when I hear the BenQ name. I think more of the displays and projectors that I have seen from the company. BenQ along with everyone else and their dog is set to toss an Android tablet onto the market early in 2011 with its offering called the R100. A few pics of the device have surfaced and it looks to be pretty cool.

The R100 has a 10.1-inch screen that offers 1024 x 600 resolution and it runs the Android OS. The processor is an ARM unit made by Samsung running at 833MHz. The tablet naturally hopes to compete directly with the iPad, which will be a big task. Android tablets are expected to grab a lot of the tablet market over the next few years though.

Other features of the R100 include 8GB of internal storage, an SD card slot for expansion, mini-USB and HDMI ports, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The device also has Bluetooth and WiFi. The dimensions of the tablet are 15mm thick and it measures 119mm x 244mm and weighs 720g. Pricing for the device is unknown and exactly what version of Android will be used isn't mentioned.
