Rumor: AMD has RX 9060 XT 16GB and 8GB, but latter GPU may be mainly sidelined to prebuilt PCs

Darren Allan | Graphics Cards | May 1, 2025 10:08 AM CDT

Fresh rumors are swirling about the RX 9060 XT, which is expected to be revealed later this month, and we're now again hearing that there will be both 8GB and 16GB flavors of this GPU.

Rumor: AMD has RX 9060 XT 16GB and 8GB, but latter GPU may be mainly sidelined to prebuilt PCs

However, AMD is apparently set to mostly focus on the 16GB model, so the RX 9060 XT graphics card that has 8GB of RAM will be more of a sideshow - in much the same vein as NVIDIA's RTX 5060 Ti, where the 8GB incarnation is difficult to find. There simply aren't many of those GPUs out there (not that many gamers are really looking, anyway).

If you've been following this thread of speculation regarding AMD's next plans for RDNA 4, you'll recall that we were originally told that there'd be 8GB and 16GB variants of this lower-mid-range GPU - then further rumors insisted that AMD had cancelled the RX 9060 XT 8GB version.

Acer's unveils a gaming monitor designed for a specific type of gamer

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 1, 2025 9:32 AM CDT

Gaming monitors come in all different sizes and speeds, with some designed for a more general gamer, and others, such as Acer's recently announced Nitro XV240 F6, being designed for a specific type of gamer.

Acer's unveils a gaming monitor designed for a specific type of gamer

The Nitro XV240 F6 is a gaming monitor designed for speed, with its trade-off being in resolution. Acer explains the new gaming monitor is a 1920 x 1080p "UltraSpeed" display that features an insanely fast 600Hz refresh rate, which is 10 times the typical rate of a monitor (60Hz), and a little less than three times the 240Hz QD-OLED gaming monitor I'm using to write this post. As for other specifications, the Nitro XV240 F6 is a 24-inch TN LCD panel that sports a 250-nit brightness, HDR400 certification, a pair of 2-watt speakers, and zero USB ports.

The Nitro XV240 F6 is rocking a 0.1ms (GtG) response time, a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 100x100 VESA wall mounting support, and DCI-P3 90% color gamut. As for connectivity, the Nitro XV250 F6 features 1x HDMI and 1x DisplayPort. Notably, the HDMI port is limited to 240Hz at 1080p, while the DisplayPort enables the full 600Hz refresh rate. Given its specifications and Acer's press release, the Nitro XV250 F6 is aimed directly at competitive gamers who aren't too fussed with image clarity and just want the highest framerate they possibly can.

Sweeney posted on X, saying: "We will return Fortnite to the US iOS App Store next week. Epic puts forth a peace proposal: If Apple extends the court's friction-free, Apple-tax-free framework worldwide, we'll return Fortnite to the App Store worldwide and drop current and future litigation on the topic".

This comment was in a reply to a post on X a couple of hours ago, where Sweeney said: "NO FEES on web transactions. Game over for the Apple Tax. Apple's 15-30% junk fees are now just as dead here in the United States of America as they are in Europe under the Digital Markets Act. Unlawful here, unlawful there. 4 years 4 months 17 days".

Oldest living NASA astronaut reveals surprising effect of living in space

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | May 1, 2025 2:03 AM CDT

The oldest living full-time NASA astronaut, Don Pettit, has sat down for an interview following his recent 220-day stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS), where he revealed an interesting effect of prolonged space residency.

Oldest living NASA astronaut reveals surprising effect of living in space

Pettit spoke to reporters a week after touching back down on Earth on April 20, his 70th birthday, which is probably one of the most unique birthday presents a human can receive - plummeting back down to the surface of your home planet. Pettit has now racked up 590 days aboard the ISS, and reporters asked him about the impact space has on the body at the age of 70.

Pettit said that after prolonged exposure to the weightlessness of space, coming back down to Earth's gravity has always posed a "significant challenge," with the veteran NASA astronaut acknowledging he didn't look great in the photos/videos of him being carried away from the Soyuz spacecraft on April 20.

AMD is preparing to formally unveil and launch its mainstream RDNA 4 line-up, which includes the Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB and Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB. Like the recent GeForce RTX 5060 Ti launch from NVIDIA, the difference between the two models is in VRAM capacity. Previously, we reported on a rumor that AMD was planning to lift the lid on the Radeon RX 9060 XT at Computex 2025, and now, with this latest report, we can pencil it in.

AMD will unveil the Radeon RX 9060 XT on May 21 at Computex 2025

A new report at Benchlife (via Videocardz) indicates that the Radeon RX 9060 XT will be unveiled on May 21 as part of AMD's press conference. It also notes that "product availability" will be sometime in June, which aligns with previous rumors about a release in the first week of June.

This also aligns with AMD's official word, indicating that the Radeon RX 9060 XT will be released sometime in Q2 2025. With the baseline GeForce RTX 5060 (with an MSRP of $299) expected to launch on May 19, it'll be interesting to see if this is enough time for AMD to provide benchmark comparisons as these two GPUs, specifically the Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB, are expected to go head-to-head.

XPG's new MARS 980 STORM Gen5 SSD features hybrid liquid and air cooling

Kosta Andreadis | Storage | Apr 30, 2025 11:57 PM CDT

XPG, ADATA's enthusiast and gamer brand, has just launched its new MARS 980 Gen5 SSD Series - high-performance PCIe Gen5 SSDs with read speeds of up to 14,000 MB/s and an 'advanced 6nm process controller.' The flagship MARS 980 STORM looks like a tiny cryo or deep sleep chamber from a sci-fi film because it includes a hybrid liquid and active fan cooling system.

XPG's new MARS 980 STORM Gen5 SSD features hybrid liquid and air cooling

With a sequential read/write speed of 14,000/13,000MB per second, the MARS 980 STORM's performance is up there. XPG notes that its blend of liquid cooling and symmetrical dual-fan setup with copper heat pipes reduces temperatures by around 20% compared to a traditional fanless heatsink. The patented design is powered via the M.2 slot, so there's no need for additional cables, and is available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities.

The MARS 980 STORM is an SSD built for a high-performance gaming PC, whereas the MARS 980 BLADE is designed for laptops and compact mini-PCs looking to take advantage of the faster speeds PCIe Gen5 SSDs offer. Like the STORM, the BLADE also offers a sequential read/write speed of 14,000/13,000MB per second, using a "highly efficient 6nm controller" for low power consumption and thermal efficiency. Like the STORM, it's also available in capacities of up to 4TB.

Kosta Andreadis | Gaming | Apr 30, 2025 11:32 PM CDT

The MSI Claw 8 AI+ and MSI Claw 7 AI+ PC gaming handhelds stand out as they are powered by Intel Core Ultra 200V chips with integrated Arc Battlemage graphics, aka Lunar Lake. As part of recent driver updates (Intel graphics driver 32.0.101.6734 and newer), now available for MSI Claw handhelds, owners can expect a free 10% boost to gaming performance with significantly better 1% low performance.

Intel showcases 10% boost to gaming performance on Lunar Lake devices running new drivers

This is important because a high 1% low figure indicates that you're getting smooth and consistent performance. Intel has provided a benchmark chart showcasing 1080p Medium performance on MSI Claw handhelds in 17W mode across a wide range of games, and the results are impressive.

"In testing this update across 9 games on the MSI Claw 8 AI+ in the Manual 17W profile, players can expect higher average GPU frequency and improved frame pacing, which translates to significant uplifts in not only average FPS but also in 1% low FPS, also called the 99th percentile," Intel writes. "What this all means is we're improving not only performance but also smoothness for a great gaming experience."

SilverStone's new power supply can power up to three GeForce RTX 5090s, or four RTX 5080s

Kosta Andreadis | Cases, Cooling & PSU | Apr 30, 2025 10:34 PM CDT

SilverStone has a new power supply, an ultra-high-capacity 2500W PSU. The SilverStone HELA 2500Rz Cybenetics Platinum 2500W ATX 3.1 & PCIe 5 Fully Modular ATX Power Supply includes four, yes four, native 12V-2x6 connectors. This is enough juice to power four GeForce RTX 5080 or three GeForce RTX 5090 GPUs, and it is so beefy that it demands a 200-240 volt outlet to unlock its full power.

SilverStone's new power supply can power up to three GeForce RTX 5090s, or four RTX 5080s

It also ships with five standard 8-pin power connectors (two dual 6+2-pin and three single 6+2-pin cables), so there's also the option to connect a few Radeon RX 9000 Series or GeForce RTX 5060 Series GPUs. This is a beast of a PSU, and not something you'd get for PC gaming; this would be more for a workstation running GPU-intensive tasks like AI.

Per the product title, the SilverStone HELA 2500Rz is Cybenetics Platinum certified to ensure that it runs efficiently and minimizes heat. SilverStone notes that thanks to the 135mm dual ball bearing fan, you can expect silent performance, and the HELA 2500Rz has an operating temperature of 50 degrees Celsius after 24/7 continuous power output.

Xbox hardware revenues continue to dwindle, down 6% to $329 million through Q3

Microsoft's Q3 FY25 results are up, and Xbox delivered a new all-time high of $5.721 billion revenue during the quarter. While total earnings were up +5%, Xbox hardware earnings are down once again, this time decreasing by -6% year-over-year. Xbox made an estimated $329 million from hardware in the quarter, which includes Xbox consoles and accessories. With these results, Q3'25 represents the fifth straight quarter in a row of Xbox hardware revenue declines on a year-over-year comparable basis.

It's also the lowest hardware revenue of the Xbox Series X/S generation of consoles (Q3'24 had previously been the lowest at $347 million), and at just $329 million out of $5,721 million, hardware made up 6% of total quarterly revenues.

Microsoft's Q3'FY25 earnings show an uptick in Xbox revenues, with the games division raking in $5.721 billion in the period. This is a new all-time third quarter record for Xbox that pushes cumulative 9-month revenues to nearly $18 billion.

But what about profitability? That's information that we don't get. Microsoft only reports profits of its individual segments, and since Xbox is part of Microsoft's More Personal Computing segment, we don't get actual profit margins for the Xbox division. We can still analyze the full extent in what Microsoft says about gaming, though.

Intel details 14A node: 2nd Gen RibbonFET, 15-20% perf-per-watt increase, uses High-NA EUV

Intel's freshly-minted CEO Lip-Bu Tan took the stage to reveal an updated Intel Foundry roadmap, adding new Intel 18A derivatives, and announcing the enablement of its high-end Intel 14A process node. The company says that it's already working with partners and 14A, and that it's sharing early versions of the Product Design Kit (PDK), and that so far, customers are reportedly happy with the implementation of Intel's new 14A process node.

The new Intel 14A process node will feature the company's second-generation PowerVia implementation dubbed PowerDirect, a more power-efficient method that focuses directly on supplying and draining transistor power through specialized contacts. This means that with Intel 14A, the company is effectively two entire generations ahead of semiconductor leader TSMC when it comes to employing backside power delivery (BSPD).
