Black Myth: Wukong was so successful it actually saved businesses

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 4, 2025 12:35 PM CDT

The gaming industry is steadily pushing toward a digital-only landscape, and while that reality is still many years away, it's undeniable that's where it's heading. However, until that day comes when we can't go out and buy physical copies of our beloved games, there will be massive physical sale success stories, and one of the most recent ones was Black Myth: Wukong.

Black Myth: Wukong was so successful it actually saved businesses

Black Myth: Wukong was a massive success when it launched digitally before getting a physical release. By that time, it was already a massive commercial success, and now, according to its physical publisher, PM Studios, the release of the game physically has not only proven successful for the creators of the game but also the businesses selling it.

PM Studios CEO Mike Yum spoke with The Gamer and said that even now, the physical sales of the game are "healthy," with Yum adding that he received many calls during Christmas and after New Year's thanking the publisher as the physical release of Black Myth: Wukong "saved their business."

MSI unveils a new drool-worthy 4K 240Hz QD-OLED gaming monitor

Jak Connor | Displays | May 4, 2025 12:04 PM CDT

MSI has unveiled another QD-OLED gaming monitor it can add to its seemingly never-ending line-up of QD-OLED offerings, and while it's similar to a gaming monitor that has been on the market for some time, it's got two key differences.

MSI unveils a new drool-worthy 4K 240Hz QD-OLED gaming monitor

MSI is one of the leading brands when it comes to gaming monitors, particularly in the QD-OLED pixel technology department, and now the company has unveiled what will be its latest edition to its growing line-up. Introducing the MAG 272UP X24, a 27-inch 4K 240Hz QD-OLED gaming monitor that is incredibly similar to the MAG 272URX QD-OLED, which I have reviewed and praised highly for its impeccable image clarity.

The specifications for the MAG 272UP X24 are extremely similar to the MAG 272URX, with there only being two big differences: USB-C charging port, and DisplayPort. The MAG 272UP X24 comes with a 3840 x 2160 (4K) resolution panel capable of hitting 240Hz refresh rate, which has been beautifully paired with a 0.03ms (GtG) response time. The display has a typical 250 nits of brightness in SDR mode and can reach up to 450 nits in HDR mode.

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney: Fortnite back on mobile represents 'massive growth opportunities'

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 4, 2025 11:32 AM CDT

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney thinks that Fortnite's re-introduction onto mobile will lead to a "big shift" in its business as the game reaches many millions more people.

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney: Fortnite back on mobile represents 'massive growth opportunities'

US courts recently levied scathing punishment on Apple for its non-compliance in the Epic v Apple trial. After courts found that the iOS App Store's fee structure was anticompetitive, Apple had been ordered via injunction to allow apps to link to third-party payment systems from iOS (instead of buying in-app, you'd buy from Epic via a web browser). Apple responded by throwing up multi-screen roadblocks in an attempt to deter users, even charging developers extra 27% fees in the process.

Now that the courts have intervened, finding that Apple willfully went against the court order, Sweeney says that Fortnite is coming back to iOS sometime next week. In a recent interview with CNBC, Sweeney says that he's confident that Fortnite will be able to capture part of the $92.5 billion mobile market to the extent that Epic's business will see "shift a lot."

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | May 4, 2025 10:45 AM CDT

NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 5080 SUPER with 24GB and RTX 5070 SUPER with 18GB have been rumored for a while, with the new SUPER variants prepped many months ago, and will increase the heat against RDNA 4 later this year.

RTX 5080 SUPER with 24GB, RTX 5070 SUPER with 18GB rumored: RDNA 4 has NVIDIA 'spooked'

In a new video from leaker Moore's Law is Dead, we're hearing from AIBs that they've had RTX 5080 SUPER 24GB and RTX 5070 SUPER 18GB graphics cards ready in labs since 2024. MLID's source explains: "We've (AIB) had 24GB 5080 and 18GB 5070 configurations in labs since 2024. In fact, those leaked 5080 boxes from a few months ago with "24GB" on them were connected to those projects. Basically, NVIDIA's been telling us to "put those variants on hold" while they wait for high capacity GDDR7 to become cheap enough to be worth it for gamers".

"However, this week we were told that the SUPER series is likely happening in 2025, and that we should be prepared to finalize highly overclocked variants of GB203 and GB205 as the 5080 SUPER 24GB and 5070 SUPER 18GB".

Man who self-injected snake venom for 18 years creates unprecedented antivenom

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | May 4, 2025 8:35 AM CDT

A man who was bitten more than 200 times by dangerous venomous snakes has helped produce the most potent anti-venom ever made.

Man who self-injected snake venom for 18 years creates unprecedented antivenom

Tim Friede, a Wisconsin man, has been injecting himself with snake venom for 18 years, racking up hundreds of injections and snake bites in his personal quest to attempt to become immune to the poisonous snakes he was keeping as pets.

Unfortunately for Friede, the human body's immunity to venomous pathogens is quite short-lived, with the developed antibodies that protect the body from harmful pathogens depleting after just a few short weeks. Due to this fact, Friede had to keep injecting himself with snake venom to maintain a healthy dose of immunity-driving antibodies.

DOOM: The Dark Ages reviews drop May 9, signaling early confidence from Bethesda

Ille Smolanko | Gaming | May 4, 2025 4:32 AM CDT

In a standout year for new releases, another contender is ready to enter the fray with DOOM: The Dark Ages, releasing May 15. Bethesda has demonstrated early confidence in the title, setting an embargo lift for May 9 - six full days before the game's standard release.

DOOM: The Dark Ages reviews drop May 9, signaling early confidence from Bethesda

The embargo date has been revealed to content creators and the press, with publications gathering early thoughts on the title as we speak. The game, which has been in development since 2021, promises a notable departure from the previous games' playstyle, emphasizing brutal, medieval combat over its predecessors' traversal-based, run & gun gameplay.

It's common convention for AAA studios to lift embargos 1-2 days before launch, in alignment with standard media cycles. However, opening reviews six (four with the Premium Edition) days before launch signals high confidence from Bethesda, who likely anticipate strong critical reception and positive buzz ahead of the game's release.

EA confirms layoffs at Codemasters, rally game development now paused

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 3, 2025 12:18 PM CDT

It was announced earlier in the week that Electronic Arts (EA) was laying off as many as 300 to 400 people in an effort to reduce running costs due to the current economic climate. Now, EA-owned developer Codemasters has confirmed it has been hit with layoffs and that development on future rally titles has been paused.

EA confirms layoffs at Codemasters, rally game development now paused

Earlier this week, EA announced it was ending its partnership with the World Rally Championship (WRC) and has now confirmed in a new statement to VideoGamesChronicle that it has "reduced some roles" at Codemasters, the rally games developer. EA didn't state how many people were let go from the developer, but did say that some roles are going to be redeployed as many as possible, "against our strategic priorities," which appears to be different areas of EA Sports.

It was only a day before this announcement that EA confirmed it reduced running costs affecting as many as 400 employees, including 100 employees at Respawn, the developers of Apex Legends and Titanfall. As for Codemasters, the exit of the developer in creating rally games marks the end of a more than 20-year-long run, which began all the way back in 1998. EA initially purchased Codemasters for $1.2 billion in early 2021, earning the publisher the rights to F1 and FIA World Rally Championship licenses, along with owned IP such as Grid, Dirt, and Project Cars.

Next Assassin's Creed game to be set in China, codename is Jade

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 3, 2025 11:51 AM CDT

The roadmap for the Assassin's Creed franchise has been leaked online, showcasing what Ubisoft has in-store for fans of the franchise over the next six years.

Next Assassin's Creed game to be set in China, codename is Jade

In an exclusive report from Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson, it's detailed that the next mainline Assassin's Creed game will be set in China and is codenamed Jade. The reporter states that Ubisoft is expected to release as many as nine new Assassin's Creed games over the next six years, with 2 RPGs, 3 Remakes, 1 "smaller experience," 2 multiplayer games, and 1 mobile title being in the works.

As for Jade, Henderson writes that Ubisoft is intending to release a new mainline Assassin's Creed RPG game every 2-3 years, with remakes and "smaller experiences" sprinkled in between the mainline releases. If this timeline stays true, we could see the Assassin's Creed Jade at the earliest, in 2027. Additionally, Henderson adds that the release timeline was shaken up by the delay of Assassin's Creed Shadows. Following the next mainline Assassin's Creed game, Ubisoft is slated to release a title codenamed "Invictus," which is an Assassin's Creed game inspired by Fall Guys.

Elden Ring: Nightreign fully explained by FromSoftware in new 10-minute trailer

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 3, 2025 8:51 AM CDT

Bandai Namco has officially lifted the veil on Elden Ring: Nightreign, only a few weeks out from its release, with the publisher dropping a 10-minute-long overview trailer showcasing an in-depth look at what players can expect.

Elden Ring: Nightreign fully explained by FromSoftware in new 10-minute trailer

The trailer kicks off by explaining players will have three in-game days to prepare for a coming boss battle, and during that time, players will have to decide what route they want to take to gear up for the big battle. The trailer says players will need to decide whether to split up and explore by themselves or as a group.

Pre-planning will be challenging as each run of Nightreign, which takes players to a place called Limveld, will be different from the last, as players will encounter random bosses, fluctuations in boss placement, environmental damage such as meteor strikes, and loot being consistently different from run to run.

TikTok hit with half a billion fine for sharing user data with China

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 3, 2025 2:32 AM CDT

TikTok has been fined more than half a billion dollars over allegations of illegal data practices, including funneling user data back to China.

TikTok hit with half a billion fine for sharing user data with China

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has put TikTok in its iron sights as the prominent video platform has been slapped with a 530 million euro, approximately $600 million, fine, as the regulatory body claims TikTok cannot guarantee user data is being stored per the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) guidelines. Moreover, the DPC states that TikTok admitted to storing limited European data in China, which the social video platform has denied in the past. TikTok has since informed the DPC it has deleted that data.

The fines against TikTok from the Irish data protection authority could certainly be damaging to the company, which is still fighting to stay within the United States. For those who don't know, TikTok was banned in the US for being a potential national security risk. US authorities were concerned that TikTok could be used as a surveillance app for China to spy on Americans, considering TikTok's owner, ByteDance, is a Chinese government-affiliated company.

PlayStation's best collectors edition yet and doesn't come with the physical game

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 3, 2025 12:04 AM CDT

In late April, PlayStation unveiled the Collector's Edition for the upcoming sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei, where it described the edition as the "best Collector's Edition we've ever produced."

PlayStation's best collectors edition yet and doesn't come with the physical game

For $250, buyers of the Collector's Edition will get all of the pre-order bonuses, including all in-game items from the digital deluxe edition, along with a digital copy of the game. That last point is a particular point of contention among collectors, as PlayStation is shipping this collector's edition with a digital copy rather than a physical copy, which many buyers of collector's editions aren't very fond of in general.

This means if a video game collector wanted everything from the Ghost of Yōtei, and most importantly, add another physical game to their wall of collected games, they will have to spend $250 on the Collector's Edition, and then buy the physical edition of the game separately. Unfortunately for collectors, this seems to be the common practice for new first-party Sony titles, as the same approach was taken with Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and will be the case for the upcoming Death Stranding 2.

NVIDIA says Huawei AI GPU demand will skyrocket if US export restrictions continue to tighten

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang remains concerned over Chinese tech giant Huawei, warning that we could see a future where Huawei AI chips would fight in the global market against NVIDIA AI chips.

NVIDIA says Huawei AI GPU demand will skyrocket if US export restrictions continue to tighten

Jensen has urged US lawmakers to "ease off" pressure on NVIDIA AI GPU exports, saying that the US and China are in an "AI war" where there's a rather fast race for AI models and cutting-edge hardware capabilities. The US government has been tightening restrictions on AI GPUs, but Huawei has been working around this and capitalizing on it by ramping up AI chips and even AI clusters in China.

These issues were raised during a closed-door meeting between NVIDIA executives and the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday, where a senior staff source said: "If DeepSeek R1 had been trained on (Huawei chips) or a future open-source Chinese model had been trained to be highly optimized to Huawei chips, that would risk creating a global market demand for Huawei chips".
