As far as military-themed shooters and action games go, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon series of games from Ubisoft used to be a mainstay. From the very first Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon game in 2001 through to the open-world Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint in 2019, the release cadence meant we got a new Ghost Recon game every year or so. However, since 2019, the series has been dormant. Until now.

According to sources, a Ghost Recon Wildlands Definitive Edition with a new mission and 4K visuals is on the way.
According to sources, a Ghost Recon Wildlands Definitive Edition with a new mission and 4K visuals is on the way.

And that's because, like a sleeper agent waiting for their next mission, it's finally looking like Ubisoft is ready to dust off Ghost Recon for another military-themed set of missions. "It's been a while Ghosts!," a new announcement on the official Ghost Recon account on social media platform X begins.

Adding, "We know some of you saw some updates, we'll have more to say on the 6th of August when we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Ghost Recon. Intel coming soon." Setting aside the ongoing troubles at Ubisoft when it comes to releasing games and achieving sales targets, it's definitely a promising sign of a potential game reveal or some form of announcement that Ubisoft is planning to bring back the series with a remaster or collection of remasters for some of the more classic entries.

Or it could be related to a Definitive Edition for the 2017 hit Ghost Recon Wildlands, which one Xbox user saw on their dashboard before it was removed. According to reports, this new version of the game will support 4K 60 FPS gameplay on the modern Xbox and PlayStation consoles, in addition to delivering a new mission.

Now, after seven years, a new mission for an almost decade-old Ghost Recon game isn't exactly a triumphant return, but it's better than nothing. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands is one of the most played titles in the series thanks to its open-world co-op sandbox gameplay, which makes it the sort of game that should get a remaster or Definitive Edition. Also, it's worth noting that Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon games fall under a different category to Splinter Cell, which is another missing-in-action Ubisoft series that the company is reportedly bringing back at some point in the future.
