TL;DR: Amazon now has permission to deliver electronics with lithium-ion batteries, including smartphones, via drones to Prime customers in Texas and Arizona. Using the newly introduced MK30 drone, orders under 5 pounds arrive within 60 minutes with precise ETAs. Express deliveries via a superfast drone aren't free, though.

Amazon has expanded the range of products it can deliver via drone in the US to include products with lithium-ion batteries, such as smartphones.

Neowin spotted a post on X from Amazon announcing the move, and that the retail giant now has permission from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to deliver electronics carrying these batteries.

To begin with, only Amazon Prime customers in Texas and Arizona can order delivery in this way. Amazon promises it can drop a phone on your doorstep in 60 minutes, or less, thanks to its speedier MK30 drone that was introduced at the end of 2024.

Amazon boasts that it now offers more than 60,000 items for drone delivery, including electronics such as phones, Apple AirTags or AirPods, and Ring doorbells.

You just need to select drone delivery if available at checkout - the item that you're buying can't weigh more than 5 pounds - and your purchase should be with your in under an hour from clicking the button to place your order.

Amazon asks you to specific a preferred delivery location with your first order, but it'll then use that location in the future (unless you say otherwise). That can be on your drive, or back yard, and there's no need to place a QR code in that physical location with the new MK30 drone, it'll find the correct spot itself.

You'll also get a precise ETA for delivery which should be accurate to within five minutes, Amazon assures us.

The one snag to note is that if you want these express deliveries, you'll have to pay for them - they don't come for free.
